I Increased My Productivity 10x - By Turning My Life Into a Game

  • When I was younger I used to play a lot of video games.
But as I grew older, they started taking too much time from my other activities.
For this reason, I started to gradually reduce the time I spent playing them, until I eventually quit.
But recently, I decided to incorporate some more down time into my schedule. And I gave video games another shot.
This is when I remembered just how fun video games can be.
It wasn't long before I was looking forward to the end of the day, just so I could hop on the computer and play. But this also got me wondering.
What exactly made those games so compelling?
And could I somehow apply those game elements to other areas of my own life to make them more desirable?
    This is what I've learned.

@Repent word of God is the vibration that makes the creation possible. It means the creation always changes in everlasting cycle of life and death but the vibration is going to be forever allowing everything to exist. The lack of vibration is the nothingness, the real and only stillness that gives infinite possibilities to create through word of God, speak things into reality or bless and curse. I guess its too deep and hard to comprehend for religious fanatics.

    5 elements of a videogame-like life
    1) Have a clear objective you are working towards and break it down into manageable achievements
    2) Make your progress visible, you need to be constantly aware that you're consistently getting closer to completing something: Track your achievements / daily activities.
    3) Reward yourself for your effort with something that rewards you back into continuing progress. Find a reward that rewards you back, or at least make sure it doesn't sabotage your progress like it usually does
    4) Incorporate something new into your playthrough.
    5) Challenge yourself by gradually increasing the difficulty. If something is too easy try to set a time limit or increase the challenge in some other way
Your quest is to incorporate all 5 elements into your playthrough.

I finally opened up Unity and started making games. We'll see where this goes, but if you want to be a game developer, you already have what you need. The internet has all the resources. This is an incredibly insightful video! I love the bit about "setting the difficulty" to what you can manage such as breaking down a big task into smaller parts, but the opposite is also very important! Imposing challenges on yourself to make mundane tasks more engaging is so smart and I love how you mention setting a timer for yourself or similar. As a recent personal example, I had some really tedious tasks to do for work and its very easy to get distracted while doing them, but I set a deadline for myself because I wanted to break for lunch at the end of the hour and had already been putzing around on the tasks for a while. I set a 30 minute timer and honestly didn't think I would get them all done but I finished with 15 minutes to spare. It's amazing what you can do when you challenge yourself and just focus.

I like to make easy tasks challenging by putting a time limit. This is especially helpful for cleaning up the room. Picking things up and organizing can feel so mundane as to feel pointless but if you give yourself a timer for 10 minutes and see how much you can get done in that limit, it feels so good to see how much better things look after such a short time.

apply it by verbalizing you goals and then understanding the steps you need to take to get there. try to improve on things you were never good at or don t give much attention to throughout your day, leveling up, like being better at presentations or talking to girls. make sure to get use out of your environment by talking to your peers and waging whether they can help you grow or not. start by taking small steps to your goals and be honest with what is getting in your way, Internet, video game or drug addictions.

Whats funny is that ive always consciously done this on the low. im 35, i was a child when pokemon first came out, and like most boys i was hooked on the games and the cards. So growing up i looked at everything i did in life as either adding to my xp or taking away my hitpoints. the more xp i get, the better my life will be and the more achievements i will attain, the more hitpoints that get taken away, the worst things will be, so everyday, I got out there and find new ways to increase my xp (studying, watching videos, investing, speaking with wise and experienced people, building relationships, etc)... Pokemon changed my life..

In games there is no cost for failure. You use quick load, or start a new match. IRL is like playing on super hardcore difficulty and every failure has a cost. You either lose time, money, job, reputation, health or sanity. If every death in a videogame cost $100 you wouldn't find them very fun.

@@Gaze73 it depends on the game, some penalize their players for wrong decisions (FromSoftware games such as Dark Souls series and Elden Ring are prime examples, Darkest Dungeon is another example) and, interestingly enough, it actually feels even better when you (player) overcome your "quest" or objective. That's because it creates a bigger challenge when the stakes are higher, thus rewarding more dopamine.
This happens in real life too, when you finally accomplish whatever you set off to do and you struggled with a task. The problem lays in our ability to identify our level versus the task's level. We either think we're a level 100 when we're actually level 30 or vice-versa. We also need to learn to drop tasks that are too difficult and come back later once we've learned more.
I realize now that i've been able to do and excel at pretty much every job i've had because i look at things more objectively and see it more like a Dark Souls game where i need to make the best of a bad situation and accept failure, rather than for my personal interests and life.

Well come back and watch it again.
I'll do so tomorrow cuz I'm sleepy now and I dozed off for seconds every other minute so I absorbed almost nothing 🤪

I ways thought about my life as a videogame, but usually tried to get this habit away as it seems to be strange and not enough "adultly". Knowing that others think like me and that this can be helpful somehow opened my mind. Gonna adapt this in my life again, in a hope to get back my productivity and get away from depression a bit

Funny thing is that the "boring grind" is standard RPG activity that helps the players progress.
Just like life one has to power through the "boring parts" in order to "level up".
      Being consistent and efficient helps.

I always did this in School. Ppl thought I was weird for making things more complicated than they are and flashing out mundane tasks or inventing some nonexistent progress bar.
Well I graduated best of my school because of it and it felt extremely easy and natural.
I can only say that this Method really does work. And other methods work too! If you suffer yourself through your daily life every day without finding any meaning or progress it's on you and you can change that.
It's all about habits. If you make a habit out of making everything engaging and interesting your life will be a cakewalk.

@@apurvachaudhari4943 Newbie at what? School or life? I feel like I just gave my best advice for both.
If you just know that Psychology and most psychological methods really do work you can ace School and life.
There are people in this world living in the shittiest situations imaginable and yet happy as it gets.
There are people in this world having no trouble working 12 hours a day with every hour more productive than a normal persons entire day while still feeling no pressure at all.
Mentality is completely overpowered and somehow nobody seems to take it seriously.

There's another positive thing in RPGs that I can think of: recognition. There might be competition between players, but when you're successful at a quest, you get recognition and thanks from the various NPCs.
I think it's important to get recognition in life to get us going. It's a form of encouragement that can be more effective than a reward. That's a difficult thing to trigger irl but the best advice I heard for that is: acknowledge the work of the people around you, sooner or later it will come back at you.
