- I speak to my friend and comrade Ilan Pappé again today, following his interrogation and detention when trying to enter the USA in Detroit 10 days ago. What happened and what is the broader meaning of US actions when it comes to Israel?
Ilan and I also speak about US still unconditional support for Israel, in light of Israel being more and more isolated on the international scene. Ilan also gives his views on israeli society and the what next in Gaza.

It is very hard to have compassion for Israeli people. They seem to have no capacity for self reflection or self accountability. It's both disturbing and fascinating. What happens in a society to cause such a disconnect from objective reality. The arrogance and self-rightiousness are stunning, really. Very sad.
And yes. What is wrong with the US. It's not that we are rightious. We have many sins. But this impunity against the world isn't even self-preservation

Re Israel -
I think the conditioning from birth of Jews as the Ultimate Victims of the past 2000 (+)
Years of history is a key .
Any defender of Israel you engage with can recite the same version of history - Pogroms , WW2 , etc.
Other groups have experienced unjust tragedy but I know of none who incorporate it so essentially in their identity .
Regarding WW2 - there is not the same memory of the 5m non - Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps .
There were 19m Russian civilians killed by Germany , 30million Chinese civilians killed by the Japanese … all tragedies - but how many museums and movies and special words do we have for one certain group’s misfortune ?
I think the sense of victimhood leads to justification for aggression ; impunity , a sense of being owed special treatment .
As for the US - I hope this is an alarm clock wake up .
Maybe I am too optimistic .
But young people can see it more clearly .
The US government is acting in ways that benefit their finances rather than their constituents on many issues .
A political analyst I listened to a month or so ago said that if the U.S. and Israel were both about to fall, Biden would save Israel.

A note on the phone: when I heard Ilan talk to Amy about this, I assumed that y'all being experienced activists he wasn't travelling to the US with his actual personal phone. But what he's saying here kinda sounds like he may have.
If so, he should get another one ASAP - they'll most likely have installed very sophisticated spyware, really hard to detect, on the phone they got their hands on. I know that you have to assume they're always looking over your shoulder anyways, and is something like that worth the bother, but afaik this is one of those things that are still worth it.
In a nutshell, never travel to the US with your actual phone these days - they brought in a law a few years ago which gives them draconian powers to invade people's phones. Bring an old Nokia or something like that, which only contains what you'll need to leave the airport. Or no phone at all, if that's an option.
Then rent or borrow a smartphone for your stay, i.e. use a phone while there which you leave behind - on factory settings - when you leave.
There are step-by-step instructions out there in activist circles about how to deal with this, things like how to use cloud back-ups of your real phone to access all your information once you're out of the airport and have your temporary phone in your hands.
These precautions are not just for yourself, but for everyone in your network with whom you have had/will have contact via your phone.
I hope Ilan wasn't actually talking about his real phone, but if he was, this does seem to be something to take seriously. Not sure if there are ways of detecting any spyware they may have installed if you're not a state actor on their tech level.
