  • The term "settler violence" has been in the news a lot recently, with some countries even placing sanctions on some individual Israelis in the West Bank who have been involved in violent incidents. But what counts as "settler violence is itself is a hotly debated topic, and one that has far-reaching ramifications, both in terms of how to understand it and how to address it.
    Special thanks to interviewees Rabbi Yehuda HaKohen (visionmag.org/author/yehuda-h...) of the Vision Movement and criminologist Dr. Michael Wolfowicz.

    How did Jordan take over the West bank? An agreement? Military incursion? A war in its own right? If the latter now can anyone say Israelis can't settle there when in the 6 day war Jordan attacked and lost this land, that it gained by attacking israel? Spoils of war as far as I'm concerned.

    Why did you downplay what the palestinians did at huwara? I thought it was objective. You gave a sentence to palestinians shooting to death a jewish family in their car and them getting not even an inkling of protection or compassion by the israeli government. The only reason that day is dreaded is because on that day jews were butchered and they fought back.

    Israel never annexed the West Bank because she didn't have to. After taking control of Judea and Samaria after the 1948 war, Jordan never annexed it to Jordan. Thus, when Israel took it back after the 1967 war, there was nothing to annex. However, because of the political climate then and now, the West Bank was left to take care of itself (if Israel had annexed Gaza and the WB, it would no longer have been a majority Jewish state). Nevertheless, the region belongs to Israel.
    Moreover, to those who insist that all Israelis leave the WB, why is it that the only people on the planet against whom ethnic cleansing is acceptable are Jews. Nobody insists that any other group leave any other region on the entire planet.

    • @KathyPrendergast-cu5ci
      @KathyPrendergast-cu5ci 6 днів тому

      In 1967 Israel could have both annexed Gaza and the West Bank/East Jerusalem AND expelled most or all the Arabs who lived there, forcing them to re-locate to Egypt and Jordan. That would have been no different from what Jordan did with all the Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1948. Tit for tat. I don't know why they didn't; presumably it was just a combination of pragmatism (not wanting to provoke further conflicts with their hostile neighbours) and morality.
      They been paying for that "good deed" ever since.

      @@oreytan8160 I stand corrected in that I oversimplified. Jordan "annexed" the West Bank and East Jerusalem in that it took control over the area, but Jordan never declared the area to be part of its country or that all of the people there became Jordanian citizens (because they didn't). So, when Israel took the area back in '67, it was not a situation of conquering another country and annexing some of that country's land because the WB was not part of the country of Jordan. This is one of the reasons why the suggestion that Israel return to the '67 "borders" is dumb because there were no borders and the land never belonged to Jordan. Israel, the only country in the world that keeps getting attacked and is expected to give up land for peace (a peace that we all know will never stick because, well, Arabs).

    • @gmh471
      @gmh471 5 днів тому

      @@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci They didn't because if they annex those areas, Israel is no longer a majority Jewish country. The quote i liked the most from this video is your last sentence. The reason is that it just thoroughly proved how foreign you are to this conflict (jew or not) and how little you understand about the actual day to day life of settlers. Alongside the violence there ie coexistence. Settlers put road signs and shop signs in Arabic because in practice, the local arabs mostly come to the settlements not to kill, but to buy, and vice versa. Many settlers would tell you theyre working with arabs. And here you have a man who genuinely understands the issue as hes worked on it for his entire life and hes telling you what is essentially an axiom in israel, and you just scoff.

      @@todayunpacked heres something worth to remember about the west bank, theres no such thing as an opinion without merit. this place is so thoroughly radicalized that the worst opinions can easily be mainstream there, so the last thing id do is ignore opinions that seem extreme to me without even checking how popular they are
      on the other hand, we do have enough content that shows those extremes on youtube.
      what i was dissapointed not to see in your video was the reality in the west bank. of course, we currently have a time of high tensions and extremism, but that wouldnt be fair to just ignore the surprising coexistence jews and arabs can have in occupied territories. its clear that when the (palestinian) authorities intensify their brainwashing terrorism happens, but j&s isnt a constant warzone.
      often in (relative) peace times you can see palestinians taking trips in area c, as well as israelis going on tours in the west bank, and its really unfortunate we collectively ignore that and go for a black and white solution like 2 states or whatever else.

      Although the anti-Israel crowd loves to say the "settlements" are illegal, they are not. Why? Because the West Bank is not a nation-state and it is not part of Jordan or any other country. So, when Jews decide to move to and build in the West Bank, whose laws are being broken? And as I said in another post, although it was part of the new state of Israel in 1948 and then Jordan took control as a result of that war, Jordan never annexed it. So when Jordan lost the war in '67, the land was taken back by Israel. So, although not part of Israel, it's Israeli land.

      Talmud is a collection of Jewish writings, not Jewish law. There is a wide diversity of opinions in it., and also a wide diversity of opinions as to its meaning.
      Eg., does the command not to "make war" also include self-defence against attack? Is it permissible to "set up a state" if it's necessary for self-defence? i.e., defending the right of Jews to live in the land?
      Keep in mind there is no branch of Judaism that says Jews should not live in Eretz Israel. Many of the most extreme religious Jews who are the most opposed to the existence of Israel as a state, actually live in Israel, (ironically) reaping all the benefits - protection by the IDF, infrastructure, social services - of its being a state, while refusing to recognize its legitimacy or serve in its military; all that may be changing in future though.

      There was a brutal m*rder by a 14-year-old Jewish shepherd boy in the West Bank, just a few months ago.
      There was the case of the family being shot in their car, from last year. Shootings like this happen every year; also roadside ambushes and executions and sniper shootings.
      I remember a case in 2011, five members of a Jewish family - including both parents, two boys age 11 and 4, and a 3-month-old-baby girl - were murdered in a home invasion, by two Arab men in the West Bank.

    I'm sorry but you gloss over the "Anti zionist view that it's a colonial project" so I have to ask if you have read the writings of Hertzl or Ben-Gurion, or many other early founders of Political Zionism? They were quite unashamed and open about calling their project a "Colonial Settler Project." These are their words, not our "views," but verifiable facts as stated by the founders of the project itself.
    Furthermore, I think there is an underlying and inherent "violence" that Palestinians must experience almost every moment of their lives.
    We are all subject to the "whims" of those in power, but there is a fundamental difference in waking up every day and spending every moment from birth to death, being surveilled by a highly sophisticated, technological, military presence that supports a constant hostile civilian presence, both of which have proven repeatedly for decades that they are able and willing to kill with almost complete and total impunity.
    In that situation, the settlers don't even have to raise their voices to the Palestinians, their presence alone is a constant reminder of the constant threat of violence without any form of protection for you and virtually every one you've ever known or loved.
    There is a subliminal sense of humiliation and helplessness that for many can and often does push them towards radicalization or self harm in other ways.
    It's sad but this is just another example of the Palestinians situation being so alien to what the majority of humanity can even comprehend psychologically, that even attempts to empathize with them sometimes reflect the lack of humanity most of the western world attributes to them.

      @@shainazion4073 I am not from that region, and I am not aware of the specific situation. I am a Christian who strongly believes in the importance of the principles of the Ten Commandments. I mentioned the seventh commandment, which can be interpreted as the reader perceives it. For example, a completely misguided comment (Get lost) that invites me to stray from the path of righteousness. God forgive them, for they know not what they do.

      What Stolen land? *The land was NEVER Palestinian land. The British Land Survey of 1945 showed the Palestinian farmers only owned 3.3% of the land.* The absentee Arab land holders (living in Damascus, Cairo, Beirut and other cities) owned 16.5% of the land. The Jews owned 8.6% of the land and 70% of the land was State land transferred from the Ottomans, to the British and then to Israel. *Israel was created by almost 80% of non-Arab owned lands.* These are Bare Facts!!

      Bro they’re crying saying this settler violence isn’t violence. Such as setting up tents and words.
      Then… they cry that Americans setting up tents saying words supporting Palestinian survival on Unviversity campus is violence making Jews feel unsafe.
      They are so unbelievable
