  • Our project IROCdaily overheated! Luckily it happened close to the house, so the car made it home without hurting the engine. Steam was coming from under the hood. When I popped the hood, the coolant in the coolant overflow bottle was bubbling and coming out of the vented cap. I threw a rag over the cap to keep the hot coolant from spraying out more than it had.
I gave a quick inspection of the system and found that the nut that holds the fan to the electric motor had worked its way loose. Later, I discovered the fan frame was cut. With some sleuthing, I later found that someone had jacked the car up from the radiator support, which bent the support. The fan was rubbing on the radiator support, which is most likely how the nut loosened up and fell off. The fan frame was probably cut to allow it to fit on the bent radiator support. Once I bent the radiator support back in proper shape with some wood and a hammer, the replacement fan fit perfectly.
Special thanks to Camaro Parts Garage! Check them out on UA-cam and Instagram! He sells original used parts for 2nd and 3rd-gen F-bodies.
I installed the fan I received from Camaro Parts Garage and the fan motor worked, but it was a little noisy, so I swapped my good VDO replacement fan motor and installed it with the replacement fan and fan frame. That's when I noticed the two different fan mounting surfaces. The concave (non-'86) fan bolted right onto the VDO replacement fan motor. So the '86 and non-'86 fans both work on the VDO replacement fan motor.
The '86 IROC is a single-fan setup. Some other year and model Camaros have a dual-fan setup.
Is your 3rd-gen a single or dual fan setup?

Never saw a third gen that didn’t overheat

Interesting. My old 85 IROC never overheated. My radiator started leaking at the tank, but I caught it early.

I had the stock fan but I have a aftermarket northern radiator and a blueprint crate motor that was getting to hot with the stock fan sitting in traffic. So I bought a electric duel fan and shroud that was for for the radiator and now it cools the car fast. Never had one problem since. It only runs for maybe a minute or two and brings the temp down and shuts off. I live in Florida so it's hot.

Yeah, I imagine you’re in hotter weather than San Jose, Ca. We break 100 about 14 days a year. And have about 78 humidity. Glad you got a good result with dual aftermarket fans. 👍

I've purchases so many Camaro's and the fans seem to always have issues. Sometimes not starting on time and other times just being flimsy or the motor not being enough air for it. Great video!!!

I put in a mishimoto race fan and their fan controller module and that's helped a lot!

Interesting. Is your engine stock? 305 TPI?

Lucky it didn’t damage the radiator. That fan is the exact one my car came with… but I’m not sure the flat vs concave. It did fine with the TPI. You should be all set bud!

Hey I’ve been trying to put together my 88 Camaro 1LE. Do you have Instagram or anyway I can privately message you? I can’t figure out where plug goes. Part of it connects to the fan the other connects to a box near the battery.
