When i was a kid, this movie came on a lot on ABC Family from around 2003 to 2005. That was my first time watching it. I watched it I think every single time it was on. We also watched it in sixth grade study hall one time. I was on the edge of my seat the whole scene of Matilda and Miss Honey in Trunchbull's home and trying to hide from her and escape.
I think if someone ran away screaming after seeing someone use powers like that would be very over the top and cartoonish. I think people would just be shocked or surprised. Just staring, mouths gapes open. Can't believe what is happening. Then after several seconds or minutes have passed, would think it's really cool and most likely wish they had powers.
You should watch the prank they did when they were advertising Carrie in like2013. People actually did scream and run once they thought she was really using powers like that. I think it would be a mixture of those that left screaming and those that stayed behind due to shock
So sad about Mara's mom. I can't imagine going through that with your mom so you, let alone carrying a movie at the same time. I just lost my mom and I am 38. I can barely function. You did give me another reason to love Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman though.
Steven Universe has an episode in season 1 called 'Mirror Gem', and the first few minutes have Steven (12ish) reveal to his best friend that he's never been to school, nor does he know how one functions. This is because he's half human, and his human father is very afraid of his son being taken away to be studied or whatnot. I think it would be interesting to hear an educator's theoretical ideas for having a child like that in school, because there is also no government proof that Steven exists. Every child deserves education, but how would a school include a half-human, half-alien child? Some weird abilities, but he's mostly just a kid.
Mrs. Trunchbull’s house belonged to Mrs. Honey and her family. I haven’t seen the movie in a long time but I believe that after her mother death and then later her father’s (murder) death, Mrs. Trunchbull did some finagling to inherit the house and the inheritance that was meant for Mrs. Honey. She then mistreated her as a child and I think eventually kicked her out of the house. That doll that Matilda took from the house was Mrs. Honey’s childhood doll that she dearly missed.
@@ashleynicolecooke4386 more like ran away from home, at least that is what she tells Matilda on the way to her home, and as they reach Miss Honey's home Matilda connects the dots in disbelief.
Mrs. Trunchbull is Miss Honey’s mother’s stepsister. Both her parents died (her father under mysterious circumstances) and she was raised by Trunchbull. Its interesting because she may or may not have killed her father herself. It’s a shame you skipped that. I know you tend to react to only the scenes at the schools, but I was hoping you’d react to the whole situation at Trunchbull’s house since it did involve school officials at the minimum. I did enjoy your reaction!
My elementary school had chalk boards until 2002. We even used slates to practice writing and then we got dry erase markers and boards. I grew up watching this movie and it’s one of my favorites.
My theory is that Matilda’s powers have something to do with the myth that humans only use 10% of their brains.Because she was at such a young age able to do things like take care of herself, figure out how to get to the library by herself, and read all those books she was able to use more of her brain and do things like move objects with her mind.
From what I remember in the book, because Matilda’s parents didn’t give her the necessary essentials for a growing mind, (why she was learning stuff on her own, eager for knowledge and always reading) her powers were basically the result of her brain lashing out until that educational fulfilment was met.
In elementary school I had a horrible time spelling ‘because’ so the teacher taught me Big Elephants Could Always Use Scrambled Eggs. I’m 27 and still automatically use that to spell it.😅
When I was high school from 2008-2012 we actually still had chalkboards. Some classrooms had chalkboards but not projector screen. And some classrooms had both. I graduated from Delaware Valley in 2012 in Pennsylvania.
This movie is based on a book from 1988. There was definatly chalkboars everywher back then. It's been a long time sine I read it, over 30 years, but I think in the book she lost her powers, because she was in a loving and safe environment where she could study as much as she wanted, so she didn't need them.
Since Roald Dahl was British, the school Headmistress is the usual term for the head of a school in England. It is a fantastic book, and follows along with his other novels, with tales of extraordinary people.
Matilda can only do things when she gets angry (at least at first) strong emotions is often what triggers strange powers...you can't do it if you are calm. me and my family talk a lot like Miss Honey, we don't tell people yes you should believe in something or no you shouldn't...we just just try our best to let people live their own lives and believe what they want...the only thing we do ask is that they don't be disrespectful and force their own views or beliefs onto us. like i was never raised religious for example and neither were many of my family...and that is fine to the rest of my extended family, some of whom are religious...so long as we respect each other.
When she was a little girl, Matilda knew she was destined to do something great. By the climax, she saw her destiny was to take her school back from Trunchbull
sadly when i was in jr high my principal was mean to me and never took my side or even helped stop the bullying by the teacher or the students,i felt worthless and helpless
@@WeirdAIStuff school is work but it can be fun too especially when you’re a child a lot of your life is school related a lot of friendships are formed social activities etc
In my Elementary School my principal had a saying. In the classroom I'm your friend but in my office I'm your enemy. Pretty much meant if you had to go see her it was because you were in big trouble.
I can see how these kids wouldn't be easily scared by usual things. A bunch of magical stuff happening would probably seem like a visit from angels compared to life with Trunchbull! I was 7 when this movie came out & I related to & looked a lot like Matilda. I wanted those powers so much! Another movie I'd recommend is "A Silent Voice", the first 20min features an elementary school bullying situation when the teacher probably could've intervened better. The rest of the story goes into the kids getting older and processing the consequences of what happened.
There are some scenes from the book that didn't make it in the movie. I think there was one part where Trunchbull lifts a boy off the ground by both of his ears, she also tells the class that she was never a child which a student challenges her on and they have a bit of a back and forth.
This movie with such a rude, strict principal again reminds me of a cartoon I once mentioned which is Jacob Two-Two where the principal I. M. Greedyguts, the teacher Ms. Sour Pickle and the janitor P. L. "Perfectly Loathsome" Leo Louse all heavily despise children and literally abuse them. This can already be seen in the first episode where they clearly see themseves as something higher than the students. The behavior of all these authorities is just highly questionable if not even downright illegal. I think a reaction to this cartoon would also be worthwhile.
Middle School: The Worst Years of my Life Kid starts Junior High and the Principal is already making LOTS of ridiculous school rules, so the teens get together and cook up pranks to drive the Principal nuts.
In the show, Even Stevens, in the episode "Snow Job," to get out of a math exam, Louis Stevens (played by a young Shia Labeouf) made fake snow and placed it in front of the principal's house. When he got caught, he was suspended from school for a week.
The way miss trunchable looks like a mad bull the way she breathed then chraged that little girl and when that little boy was flying i thought petter pan vibes
Lean On Me is perfect for subscriber special. It’s based on a real principal, Joe Clark (played by Morgan Freeman) who turns around a declining high school that’s at risk of receivership. Unless the student’s grades improve. But he uses harsh methods to turn it around.
My high school homeroom teacher for grade 12 had three blackboards. One for each grade/class she taught. It was used for how many assignments a child was missing
Then again this is the same teacher who would jokingly threaten to take out our knees if we bothered her enough or couldn't be quiet during lessons (we all knew it was a joke and played along up until the day we graduated and she took maternity leave)
I remember seeing this movie once on TV, the over the top of some scenes really make this feel like we’re seeing it from a child’s exaggerated point of view.
2:48 Clearly I just zoned out when this girl was talking when I watched it as a kid, because I thought the kids were just naming random letters. Same with Arthur spelling "aardvark" on... well, _Arthur._
I love this scene every time when Matilda shows Miss honey her powers and if it was me, I would be very amazed and not get scared at all. I’m very glad she had them too because she was able to stop a very evil principal like Miss. Trunchbull 19:08
Matilda doesn't have "Force Powers" she has telekinesis. The power to move things with her mind. If she actually had "Force Powers" in addition to the telekinesis she would have the ability to hypnotize people with her mind and a hand gesture, super powered reflexes, would need to keep her emotions under perfect control because her powers would be tied into them, and might have visions in her dreams.
Ms Trunchbull is Ms Honey's mom's sister. Also Matilda lost her power in the book after being put at top form and she didn't have the space in her brain after being challenged.
I almost got a college professor that used to work in the fbi as an English professor and she said it herself that she was very strict and didn’t accept failure and only on day one she gave out such a bad vibe that my anxiety went into overdrive and as soon as class was done I dropped the class and chose interpersonal communication instead and to this day I refer to her as Miss.Trunchbull
19:49---It shows how frightening Ms. Trunchbull is. Ms. Honey is so terrified of her that even a levitating water pitcher doesn't scare her at this point. 27:57---I was in elementary school when this movie was made. I saw chalkboards used until I was in high school; then the teachers had the latest high tech gadget: marker boards. Yes, this was in the U.S. I honestly think the most unrealistic part of this movie is the idea that children like school. I always hated it. I got good grades and never got in any trouble, but I hated the constant pressure to live up to the expectations of being a "good student." Basically, my teachers and principals had me convinced that if I ever got sent to the office or had to miss recess time or even a minor punishment like that, it would go on my permanent record, and then I'd never get into college; thus, I would never be successful as an adult, and I'd be penniless in the street. The same would be true if I ever got less than an A in class because B plus was the same grade as F minus. I never understood why other students were happy to get B's and why they didn't seem bothered by getting detention or ISS or anything like that. To the person who reads this comment and says, "It's not so unrealistic that kids like school! I loved it!" I would just say I'm happy you had a better educational journey than I did. The idea is unrealistic to me, but maybe it makes perfect sense to you based on your personal experience, and that's wonderful.
Matilda wanted to attend school because she loved learning and all the students ended up enjoying school once Miss Honey took over because she’s so caring and sweet they no longer had to be afraid.
Also I gotta point out that so many people get good grades college etc and still can have a run of bad luck or bad decisions etc once done with school no job cares what grades you got they see where you went to college
@@oooh19 That is SO true! People with the highest degrees imaginable sometimes end up struggling, whereas some people who don't go to college at all manage to work their way to the top. Going to college can be beneficial and give you a few more opportunities, but it's not always a guarantee. Some employers don't even care where you went to college or if you finished; they just want to see that you tried to gain more education. I've even heard some employers say that they prefer students who had to retake classes or got C's because they're not afraid to work through challenges and try again after failures and setbacks. Ultimately, grades are important, but not as much as the education system tries to make students believe; grades alone will not make or break someone's entire future. If I had known that back in elementary school, my entire academic experience would have been a lot less stressful.
Respectfully sir does ethical issues really matter when she lives with a family of criminal parents? Miss honey is the first person to show Matilda motherly love
23:56 I actually had a teacher do something like that once, the kid was eating a sandwich in class, several times the teacher told him to put it away and he didnt so the teacher snatches it from him, slams it in the trash in front of the whole class. He holds out the trash can, spits in it and tosses the can around like a salad (to mix it). We all thought it was funny at the time. The messed up part was after class the kid went and pulled the sandwich out of the trash and ate it anyway....🤢 27:50 My experience, chalkboards starting disappearing by junior high, we had one student who had a visual impairment: she couldn't see on dark surfaces so they brought in whiteboards to her classes to accomodate her, eventually every class room had a whiteboard instead of a chalkboard.
I should point out, this kid was for lack of a better term a total attention whore. Loved to bait teachers into losing their patience and get yelled at. That wasn't the only teacher he ever successfully baited like that and the universal opinion was usually "well he deserved it..."
A few quick fun facts about this Rhol Dahl the author of the original book Matilda based the Trunchbul on a real person though irl she owned a candy shop and wasn't a school principal. The nute incident was based on a real prank that Dahl and his friends played on her. They where caught and she went to the the principal of there school about it. He called them out on it and punish them for it at an assembly kind of like the cake scene. Except it was a public paddling in front of the school by the lady the Trunchbul was based on. Keep in mind this was back In The 20s or 30s I think. It's a big reason why Dahul didn't like educators much. I read all about it in Dahul's biography
Y'know after I watched Part 1 last week I went straight to Netflix watched the rest of this movie and I was like "I wonder how many more potential firings Brandon's gonna give this sorry excuse of a principal."
17:01 In what you skipped through, Matilda and Miss Honey had to escape the house because Trunchbull came back early, noticed signs other people were there, and hunted through the house for the intruder. Matilda went back that night to use her telekinetic powers to spook Trunchbull and retrieve Miss Honey's doll without going into the house, but she left her hair ribbon behind. 24:58 That's the unfortunate thing about skipping parts of a movie like this- you miss out on relevant context and exposition. There are scenes in and out of the school, but for Matilda, Miss Honey, and Miss Trunchbull, their personal lives affect their school lives, so this reaction would have been better off being for the whole movie, and just editing it down to the school scenes. That way you could see all of the context and story, but still keep to your channel's schtick.
Would love to see you react to 100 things to do before high school(the premiere episode/movie anyways). It's kind of interesting and a different take. It's on Paramount I believe
She was a terrible person to her when she was young even now as a teacher, and I’m glad how Miss Honey stands up to her because at first, I thought Miss honey was going to get hurt 24:34
in the book Matilda looses her powers because she only has them as a sideefect of her brain not being challenged, so when she gets propper stimulation the power goes away at the concusion of the book she has no powers.

I had a teacher in 2nd Grade who called me *"Retarded"* to my face _(more than once)_ and told my parents that I was *"Retarded"* and that I would *"...never learn how to read.".* Some teachers suck.
TOTAL FIRING COUNT: 32 (I added two more firing as you missed the part where Trunchbull called Matilda a "p*ssworm", which would *DEFINITELY* get her fired and the part where she called Matilda and her dad "the most corrupt lowlifes in the history of civilization" wasn't added to the scoreboard)
I had a teacher that was lowkey like Trunbull, she was my 9th and 10th grade Applied English teacher, and also my case manager for my IEP. She was a horrible women, very much a bible thumping christian that was PISSED when I came out as Non-binary and my parents were supportive. There were so many times that women made me had breakdowns and didn’t want to come to school because I was actually terrified of her. She of course never touched me, knew she wouldn't get away with it, but she said absolutely nasty things to me. Thankfully after 3 years of dealing with her as my case manager, I got a new one cause the old hag left. My new case manager was my 11th grade Applied Geometry teacher, she was the nicest lady, she liked my personality and was very accepting of me, she and my new guidance counselor were big supporters of me, helping me make up credits so I could graduate on time. They were very much like Miss Honey. So was my 10th grade English teacher, after being taught English for three years with vocabulary that was YEARS until my learning level, I was finally put in a normal English class, and that women.... she was amazing, like Miss honey too, she clearly had a troubled past but never really brought it up. I felt like I was sort of adopted by those 3 after my own version of Miss Trunbull left. Unfortunately, unlike her, my version TRIED to come back into the system, I got something in the mail almost a year after I graduated premoting to vote for her to become head of the school board, thankfully she didn’t win. Anyways, Sorry for the essay, loved the reaction.
For me we still had Chalkboards all the way into highschool. those and Overhead Projectors. The school finally got the overhead projectors swapped out with those digital projectors and whiteboards instead of chalk.
At least this time she didn’t go inside the house. She did it with her powers to get the doll for Miss honey. But in reality, yes no one should be breaking into someone’s home especially a school principal 16:46

Poor cat. I'm sure it wasn't hurt in real life at least. I know you would dock Miss. Honey for having Matilda over. Especially now days when there are so many teachers doing stuff they shouldn't. It's just not ok. I'm glad the adoption worked out ok though. Miss. Honey is a good one. I don't blame you for skipping the part in Trunchbull's house. She's scary and that scene goes on awhile. XD
Well technically the house rightfully belongs to Miss Honey as well as everything inside that was her parents. So.........can it really be called "breaking and entering" if the house in question is rightfully yours??? 🤔🤔🤔
I also have to say about this movie that I was hoping Ms. Trunchbull would actually learn her lesson and become a good character. But the last time she was seen she was chased away by the students. And also when I was a kid I was always a bit surprised or confused how the students in American cartoons were punished in the schools, most of the time by being given detention. I am actually from Germany and in my school days students were punished most of the time by sending them out of class and having them wait before the room for a couple of minutes until the teacher lets them in again or until class is over. And sometimes punished students didn't actually wait before the door but went somewhere else or they even left school.

But sadly on April 26, 1996, shortly before the premiere. Suzie Shapiro Wilson lost her battle with cancer. She was 53
I believe she did get to see the movie before she passed though.
@ShinyTogeticFTW yes she did Danny snuck a copy of the final film in so she could see her daughters movie like a day or so before her passing
27 Firings sounds like an academy record
Yes 😂
"If you are having fun, you are not learning." Lol hahaha i love that sign. Haha
Miss Honey wasn't kicked out she found a house and decided to move out.
@@ashleynicolecooke4386 more like ran away from home, at least that is what she tells Matilda on the way to her home, and as they reach Miss Honey's home Matilda connects the dots in disbelief.
Daddy Day Care with Eddie Murphy would be another good movie to react to.
Thanks for watching!
My elementary school had chalk boards until 2002. We even used slates to practice writing and then we got dry erase markers and boards. I grew up watching this movie and it’s one of my favorites.
@ Mine had some in about half of the classrooms til about 2008, although those rooms also had regular white boards
My theory is that Matilda’s powers have something to do with the myth that humans only use 10% of their brains.Because she was at such a young age able to do things like take care of herself, figure out how to get to the library by herself, and read all those books she was able to use more of her brain and do things like move objects with her mind.
It was explained in the book. And also explained why she lost them afterwards.
Interesting
This movie is based on a book from 1988. There was definatly chalkboars everywher back then. It's been a long time sine I read it, over 30 years, but I think in the book she lost her powers, because she was in a loving and safe environment where she could study as much as she wanted, so she didn't need them.
Fun fact: the person who plays Matilda’s dad Harry (Danny Devito), is the director of the movie too
I would like to point out that the real name for "The Force" in this movie is Telekinesis.
Yes 👍
The students are just as scared of Trunchbull so much that they can’t even inform their parents about it
Since Roald Dahl was British, the school Headmistress is the usual term for the head of a school in England.
Fun fact - the actress playing Trunchbull played Aunt Marge in Harry Potter
*The Breakfast Club* is another great one, the entire movie would be material for a reaction!!!
When she was a little girl, Matilda knew she was destined to do something great. By the climax, she saw her destiny was to take her school back from Trunchbull
So her friends can be free
sadly when i was in jr high my principal was mean to me and never took my side or even helped stop the bullying by the teacher or the students,i felt worthless and helpless
I’m sorry you had this experience.
Matilda is a Jedi master!
Yes apparently! 😂
Obi wan and Qui gon found the wrong prophet
5:18 when I was in grades 5 and 6 in middle school, our assistant principal had a sign up in her office that said "school is for work, not fun"
Wow 😮
Well the teachers were petrified of Miss Trunchbull as well
There are some scenes from the book that didn't make it in the movie. I think there was one part where Trunchbull lifts a boy off the ground by both of his ears, she also tells the class that she was never a child which a student challenges her on and they have a bit of a back and forth.
I can't believe your a school principal and you've never read Matilda... You're missing out, you should read all the roald Dahl books
Middle School: The Worst Years of my Life
Kid starts Junior High and the Principal is already making LOTS of ridiculous school rules, so the teens get together and cook up pranks to drive the Principal nuts.
Ms. Trunchbull should thank all that is holy this little girl is not a Sith 😂
Mrs. Trunchbull definition of dictator
In the show, Even Stevens, in the episode "Snow Job," to get out of a math exam, Louis Stevens (played by a young Shia Labeouf) made fake snow and placed it in front of the principal's house. When he got caught, he was suspended from school for a week.
Wow!
Thanks!
That scene where Trunchbull pushes the desks into the wall-our teacher threw a baseball at the window. She got fired for that 😅
Wow 😮
Wow 😮
If you enjoyed Miss Trunchbull in this, you should watch the musical movie. The lengths she goes in that movie is insane at the end!
@ I would think bullies would also add stress or conflict with friends or family or a difficult teacher etc
@@oooh19 For sure. I knew better than to bully my fellow students, and thankfully, no one bullied me either, but I do know it happens.
I recommend watching the breakfast club as it is a great movie about school.
Respectfully sir does ethical issues really matter when she lives with a family of criminal parents? Miss honey is the first person to show Matilda motherly love
20:35 I saw this movie way before watching Star Wars, so you making this connection is pretty interesting.
The messed up part was after class the kid went and pulled the sandwich out of the trash and ate it anyway....🤢
27:50 My experience, chalkboards starting disappearing by junior high, we had one student who had a visual impairment: she couldn't see on dark surfaces so they brought in whiteboards to her classes to accomodate her, eventually every class room had a whiteboard instead of a chalkboard.
😮
I should point out, this kid was for lack of a better term a total attention whore. Loved to bait teachers into losing their patience and get yelled at. That wasn't the only teacher he ever successfully baited like that and the universal opinion was usually "well he deserved it..."
38:17 honestly I was glad Matilda was able to get the adoption papers. She miss honey belong together.
A few quick fun facts about this
Rhol Dahl the author of the original book Matilda based the Trunchbul on a real person though irl she owned a candy shop and wasn't a school principal.
😂
A great choice of movie to react to! Ms. Trunchbull is basically the embodiment of every child's worst school nightmare, I think 😆
You think she’s “Full Blown” now… wait until you see what Harry Potter does to Trunchbull when she’s HIS cousin’s aunt! 😂
Mara Wilson's mom Suzie passed away shortly before the film's premiere in '96
Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman arranged a private screening of Matilda for Suzie while she was in the hospital
Thanks for making this, I was super stoked you got to this movie! Such a classic for me and my family! (There is also movie musical one as well)
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! 😎👍
8:35 8:36 That’s basically what “Matilda‘s” dad said to her earlier in the movie.
Another recommendation for an episode of a TV show with a mean teacher would be the As Told By Ginger episode "Driven to Extremes".

@@peperino25 I second School of Rock!
Thanks!
School of Rock is currently on the channel as a members only video 👍
I had a teacher in 2nd Grade who called me *"Retarded"* to my face _(more than once)_ and told my parents that I was *"Retarded"* and that I would *"...never learn how to read.".* Some teachers suck.
Wow that’s terrible. 😮
I’m sure that the actress who is playing the principal is having fun!!!
Oh and does anyone wondering what the outtakes for this movie were like? This movie is already crazy.
For Christmas, a good idea would be to react to Santa claus 2 with Proncipal Carol Newman
Wow 😮
Thanks for watching! 😎👍
For me we still had Chalkboards all the way into highschool. those and Overhead Projectors. The school finally got the overhead projectors swapped out with those digital projectors and whiteboards instead of chalk.
I am pretty sure trunchbull desensitized these kids enough that once they got their opportunity to ocerpower her they did
At least this time she didn’t go inside the house. She did it with her powers to get the doll for Miss honey. But in reality, yes no one should be breaking into someone’s home especially a school principal 16:46
With all those potential firings I guess Miss Trunchbull is not asking to get fired, she’s begging for it
Yes 😂
Even though the movie came out in 1996 it's supposed to be depicting the time of the seventies or eighties
Wasn’t it supposed to represent Roald Dahl’s time at school which was supposedly really horrible
Nope I am around the same age it definitely was 90s 90s children were the last generation to grow up without all the tech they have now as we grew up MySpace and IMing started
36:05 Funnily enough, I just generated a 10.83 Hertz wave on Audacity to get an idea of what a mouse's heartbeat sounds like, and... yeah, "humming" is pretty much accurate.
im so happy u reviewed this movie its my fav or one of them
Cool! 😎👍
35:23 Gordy would say, “I’ll let the night guy do it” 😂
Lol 😂😂😂😂
XD
Even the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge would quake at her.
You can literally feel the anxiety of Miss Honey and Matilda when you watch that scene.
The sad truth is…many teachers do ab*sive things to kids all the time and get away with it…
Well technically the house rightfully belongs to Miss Honey as well as everything inside that was her parents.
