  • Right on the box Dave Smith Instruments spells out that Mopho Synth is short for "Monophonic Synthesizer," but did you know that the remaining letters in the long phrase can be arranged to spell "No Nicer Size?" Hear this portable box in action in this, our first Mopho demo.

    fast forward 8 years to 2017 and I still think this product holds up well against new competition, a direct shoot out with the Pioneer Toraiz AS-1 and Roland Boutique SE-02 would make a nice video

    That was the pitch control of the oscillators, he grabbed the pitch knob, not the filter cutoff. On my analog Yamaha cs5 when I switch the pitch it maybe just a set switch 2,4,8,16,32,64...etc. In other words the pitch maybe just steps in the sense they also appear as on this mopho synth as well.

    @SomeRandomCat Tetra is 4 notes polyphone which you can split over 4 different channels. also another difference is that the Tetra has a feedback option without the need of physical routing the output to an input.

    I bought one of these a couple years ago, and its awesome. I wish it could do more 303 type stuff, but that's just the at itis . also, the real point I'm trying to make is how much the title made me laugh. What's really insane is the topical 90s humor. It makes very obvious the extent to which some things change and how some things never do, if that means anything.

    I just picked up a Microbrute as my first synth and love it. Would it be worth it to have this along side it for an extra layer? Or would I be better getting something like Volca bass? I am a drummer first, and the beats I will be playing myself and over-dubbing, so I do not need a beat/drum machine.

    • @yourmalm
      @yourmalm 9 років тому +2

      I'd recommend Komplete or a Maschine. the maschine comes with enough synth software to keep you happy. It's interface is really easy and as a drummer you'll geek out hard. It's kind of like a drum machine, but really it's so much more. It's like an mpc on crack with a daw built in. However, eventually you'll have to suck it up and buy Komplete for all the sounds.

    The Tetra is polyphonic, meaning you can play up to four notes at once, but with this you can only play one. There are more voices, which means not only can you play more than one note at once but you can also combine different voices to play at once.

    This has nothing to do with the filter itself, it's the patch that makes that sound. It's FM modulation, which modulates the filter cutoff with an oscillator in audio range. That why it "beats" when turning the cutoff knob. The filter is 100% analog.

    Its a great bargain for the price. Its monophonic, but you can get along this limitation by sampling the sound and playing chords...multitimbrality is easily excused if multi-tracked one track by one...you can great tight grooves, searing leads, shaking basses, etc.
    I still prefer the Prophet 08 rack due to its great interface and 8 voices poly / 2 multi-timbral.

    That's to be expected really. It's real analouge. There is no keybed.., and the MoPho has no where near the real-time control as you find on the SH-201. Both units are great synths too. The MoPho's a great little box unit.., and the 201 is a nice VA unit with a lot of controllers, keybed, and a VERY simple user interface without all the menus.

    @TheRealCritique Maelstrom is a granular synthesizer, there's no way it could sound like an analogue synth. The Mopho is closer in design to Reaon Subtractor. If you compared the DSI to a Virtual Analogue Subtractive Synth it would be much more believable.

    @gxddxmnxt I dont think they are comparable as one is alot more complicated than the other. The range of sounds you could get out of a monophonic analogue compared to a va with wavetables and sampling is limited.
    This does what it does very well, it gets those old pro one monophonic prophet sounds at a really amazing price. Its huge bargain and a great entry level analogue synth especially if you are considering the keyboard version.

    @gxddxmnxt there is no point in comparing them mate they are completely different mopho is analogue and the blofeld is digital blofeld is for more complex sounds and has more voices mopho is not , it is mono and fat is for bass lines and that kind of stuff mostly while blofeld is a full synth very close to what use to be the micro q line of waldorf. mopho is great to add some analogue bass sounds to a digital synth track cheers

      @TooSlowTube 7 років тому

      The basic requirement is one standard MIDI cable (5 pin DIN plugs on each end) to connect a MIDI controller, e.g. a keyboard, or a MIDI wind instrument.
      The output is a 1/4" jack, which you can plug headphones into or connect to an amp with a guitar lead.
      To edit patches on a computer, you need two MIDI cables and a USB MIDI converter, or an M-Audio Uno (or similar) which combines the two. Don't cheap out on the converter. The good ones are not all that expensive - e.g. ones made by M-Audio or Roland.
      The free patch editor for Windows works just fine - I'm using it on Windows 7. There is at least one paid version with more features, but mostly for organising your saved patches, and not essential.

    Modulars are expensive. For the price of a Mopho you'll only get a power supply, case, and maybe an oscillator. The Blofeld isn't modular, it's just a "Virtual Analog" synth, which basically means it's a digital synth that tries to sound analog.

    Actually, Arturia HAS a software copy of the CS-80! Pretty amazing, eh?
    The reason you have yet to hear a VST that sounds truly like an analog synth isn't because your ear is that discerning -- it's because you already know that what you are hearing is a VST, so it is never given a fair chance because you will not open your mind to the fact that modern softsynths outperform old analog technology.

      +Zachariah Moreno I'd put it this way: the sound synthesis consists of analog circuits, so yeah, analog. DSI's website states: "100% analog signal path" - that's what you're looking for. The term 'modeling' most of the time refers to digital means of creating sounds. Some makers try to persuade you into thinking their gear is analog by using those terms like 'analog style' or 'virtual analog' (the last one is rather accurate, but has to be understood as 'digital modeling of analog style synthesis'). The editor is only used to program the synth, as I recall. This means sending (digital) controls to the synth that get converted to analog control signals. That being said, many analog synths have digital parts implemented, such as digital oscillators or patch storage. Sorry for my long answer, but there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding going on about this matter in general.. Hope I could clear this up a bit and sorry for any weird English :-]

    • @sixxdb
      @sixxdb 7 років тому +3

      This is an analog synth that uses digital control, i.e. The sound is made from electronic components, but controlled using computer chips. The sound you are hearing is 100% analog.

    This is a highly subjective matter. However the broad spectrum of opinion will qualify you as incorrect. Various listening tests have been conducted publicly on the internet for years. And the consensus has always been that Virtual Analogue synths sound distinct from Analogue synths. None is better than the other. They are just different.

  • @solarsystemboots
    @solarsystemboots 14 років тому +1

    It's INSANE, this guy's taint.

  • @v1o
    @v1o 14 років тому

    That is incorrect. I have yet to hear a VST that can sound like a CS80. Arturia's plugin doesn't sound close. Same with the Moog. Have yet to even hear a VST that can sound like an Access Virus. The Virus is one of the more analog sounding VAs, there's a reason why. General purpose CPUs DO NOT house enough power to handle more advanced modeling algorithms. Corners will always be cut in the quality department. Units like the Virus use dedicated hardware specifically designed for the task.

  • @v1o
    @v1o 14 років тому

    Even Hardware VA's with their dedicated DSP processors like the Nord Modular, Virus TI2 or Roland V-Piano currently sound better or phatter than most Soft synths.

  • @WithExtremePrejudice
    @WithExtremePrejudice 14 років тому

    Not true. Softsynths, particularly analogue modeling softsynths, have perfectly captured the sound of analogue synthesizers through engineering those inconsistencies -- because such algorithms are programmed in a stable digital environment, the environment itself has no effect on the sound. Softsynths that don't sound good just aren't engineered well.

    somebody hand this to WC Olo Garb or JayBee, quick sharp!

  • @WithExtremePrejudice
    @WithExtremePrejudice 14 років тому

    Actually, this is not true at all. The VAST majority of double-blind tests conducted show that over 99.5% of listeners cannot reliably tell the difference between a properly engineered softsynth and an analog synth.
    The real issue here, and the reason there is such a market for analog synths still, is because there are so many luddites who cannot accept that audio engineering has finally captured all of the nuances of analog.
