I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

@@juniper617 When i got my first period it was like, a week before my 10th birthday, so i was 9yrs old, and school hadn't gone into the whole period lessons yet, so, i just saw this weird browny-red stuff in my pants and thought i crapped myself so i just showed my mum and asked her if it was period blood. Daughters should never feel shy to show their mums their period blood. I have a 5yr old daughter, and i got a side episiotomy, so stitches, i had to regularly show the stitches to my partner to make sure none burst or whatever, and make sure i was healing okay. After labouring and birthing totally nude because clothes were uncomfortable for me, i lost all shyness when it comes to my naked body. I'm not an exhibitionist at all, my clothes are like high-neck, long-sleeve, trousers, but i'm not shy to just take it all off if i need to and i'm thankful for that, medically-wise.

I was 8 when I got mine. I just had 2 teeth pulled & we were visiting a friend of my mother's in the hospital. I wasn't feeling well, so when we went back to my mother's friend's apartment to pick things up for the hospital, I went to sleep. When I woke up.....blood bath all over, (hope this isn't too graphic). Even at that young age, I was very private, shy. Didn't know what was on the bed, went to the bathroom and screamed. My mother was visiting the couple next door with my sister. Who does my mother send to find out what's wrong? My sister. UGH. I was NOT a dramatic child, so hearing me scream should have sent shivers down my mother's spine, but no. LOL I wouldn't let anyone in the bathroom, (remember, shy & private). My mother had to use a key. I was crying, thinking I was dying....I was in so much pain, everywhere, because even my mouth was hurting & bloody. It was horrible. My cycle never let up; and was very inconsistent in when it would come. When it did, it usually lasted between 7-9 days. I'd miss 3 days of school every month, if it didn't start on the weekend. I'm now 58 and it took 4 years to get rid of it during menopause. My doctor told me that getting it so young I probably would stop getting it when younger. NOPE. The majority of my friends had "normal" cycles, most of them NEVER complaining of cramps or nausea or heavy flows. They also stopped getting it a couple of months after starting menopause. Where's the justice in that? LOL

I had just learned about menstruation, too, in my science class, but luckily I got it at around 7 or 8 PM so I was at home. I only told my mom, and she didn't tell anyone and I was kind of scared so every time I had to go to the bathroom, my mom had to go with me. Now I am 13 and looking back to it, it was kind of funny how I got it the same day we had about it at school, haha.

Thank you for posting this. I'm disabled, mobility, no sight issues. However, your earlier start of puberty, was the first time I have known someone else who started young, I was 9, it happened at night. My dad was at work, & we're close but that was a relief as I absolutely didn't want him knowing. My big sister was on holiday, my mum was on the phone to my Godmother. I went to the toilet, saw blood & thought I was bleeding in the injured way, as I had no idea about puberty or periods...That was frightening. After that first time, I used to be extremely ill, vomiting each month, & jaundice too for about a year. Never any pain though. It's an important subject that no one wants to talk about, so much stress & embarrassment for young girls. But to be blind too? That means it can't be something as secret & private, because you need to know it's started each time.
So hard as this must've been thank you, for sharing. Younger me would've been so relieved to know she wasn't a freak, hitting puberty so early. It was pre-google, so leaflets that stated average age was the limit of info available. Which is why friends, with daughters especially, know I hit puberty young. Tell your daughter so it isn't frightening for then & let them know it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Ok, but like, have you done it without looking?
I’m sure it’s fine for blind women to use tampons or pads if maneuvering a cup is too difficult.
It’s not fair to impose a feeling of guilt on those who already have tougher situations.
This is coming from another cup user. I believe the women who are able to use cups have already made a huge impact on the environment.
If one can use a menstrual cup as a blind person, that is really incredible to me.

The checking with your mom thing? Honestly, it doesn't sound that different from when you're out with friends and you've got white jeans. Suddenly you're terrified you've abruptly gotten your period and it's broken through, so you grab your friend and go, "Am I good?!" and turn around so she can check you.
Your version involves much less panic, so I like it.

  • @MarrisaPlays

I totally agree with you on men needing to know. I remember one month i was on it. My husband was in the shower and i was doing my thing on the potty. We started talking about it and we do have a very open relationship, I am 100% sure most people would be disgusted by our conversations. We got on the topic of my (and women in general) period. I happened to be using a tampon at that moment and asked if he really understood what they did. The answer was no, So what do i do. Obviously, i grab a new one and jump in the shower where there is a liquid source for my instruction. he was totally fascinated by how big it got in the water.
On the note of how you know when you cant see it, well i know personally I can smell a metallic scent from the area the day I am going to start. I dont know if this is normal for everyone but i personally can smell menstrual blood.

In the 90's?? It's even more expensive today. I hate the American healthcare system. And I know all my Canadian and European friends complain about the higher taxes, but the American tax code is so cumbersome and ridiculous that a lot of Americans overpay taxes unless they have the cash to hire tax specialists. I hate all the medical bills that come after I see a doctor, and I just found out because my husband switched jobs and I'm no longer eligible for his new work insurance until he's been there for a year, I'll be paying $580/month on top of my normal medical bills. Just got a bill for $387 from my ultrasound to determine my due date for this new baby. How is this better than paying higher taxes?!? At least if we had higher taxes contributing to a national health Care system, we wouldn't have the highest maternal death rate of all the developed countries, because pregnant women wouldn't put off seeing a doctor until it was too late. I wouldn't get panic attacks every time I have to see a doctor. America is so broken.

I also lost my period during a really hard time in my life. 1-2 years also around 19 years old. Its something that really needs to be talked about more because a lot of women experience it. After coming down from the stress and the depression, my period was always VERY infrequent and unpredictable. during that time, I realized how important mental health is for the physical body. It still happens when big issues crop up in my life but it is so awesome to hear you had a similar experience because it is just not talked about.

It may sound stupid but they have amazing senses and I'm sure that could work somehow. It might not be a viable option but if it is, would give you even more independence if your mum isn't about at the time. As we all know, periods can sneak up on you at very awkward moments. 🙂

It surprises me that so many women are “scared” of tampons, and how many choose to wear pads. I just feel like it feels SO uncomfortable to wear a pad. I used drugstore tampons for so long until I realized how horrible they actually are. Then I started buying 100% cotton ones and it changed how they made me feel so much. Now I’m starting to use the menstrual cup. Ladies...get familiar with your body. Learn about it. Locate your cervix. It’s VERY empowering and makes using things like tampons and cups a lot easier. There’s nothing to be scared of.

Very brave of you to share about this subject! I didn’t think you were too graphic at all. I do use a period tracking app. I’m not blind I should add. I don’t use the app to actually predict ovulation or my periods though because my cycles are so irregular. I have endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, luteal phase defect (don’t make enough progesterone during second half of my cycle so I have to take replacement progesterone). The app I have wouldn’t be able to figure all that out. But it does help me to record symptoms and see patterns so I can get a better idea of what my body is doing. I’ve unfortunately learned way more about cycles than I ever thought I would after losing 3 babies during pregnancy and battling infertility. Anyway, I’m so glad you’re doing better these days! Broke my heart to hear how much you struggled in your younger years. I’ve gone through severe depression and suicidal feelings too. And I’m the same when it comes to stress and eating. Most everyone around me eats more when they’re stressed but I lose my appetite completely. Especially when I’m anxious. I feel nauseous and have to force myself to eat. I’m still working on eating enough calories per day. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us. Love and hugs ❤️
