    Me: I have Scoliosis

    Them: no wait let me guess you have problems with your hands?
    Me: No it's when my back curves in a way it shouldn't

    Me: 😐😐 Yeppp sure buddy

    • @HopeUnquenchable
      @HopeUnquenchable 4 роки тому +23

      I find that using body language when explaining scoliosis is more effective than just saying, “It’s when the spine curves in a way it shouldn’t.” I draw an imaginary snakey line down my front to illustrate the direction the spine curves, and rarely does anyone say they think they have it, too ☝️

    • @xanderpatterson4729
      @xanderpatterson4729 4 роки тому +2

      I’m actually worried I have it lmfao. Ik my spine isn’t straight, and never has been, but I’ve also never been actually tested for it lmao

    • @HopeUnquenchable
      @HopeUnquenchable 4 роки тому +16

      Alexander Denver, a very simple preliminary testing can be done at home, if your parents or siblings (or even a friend you don’t mind seeing you with your shirt off) would be willing to assist you. You have to be shirtless, so they can clearly see your back, but they should stand in front of you, facing you as you bend straight forward to touch your toes (keep your feet together, with your knees slightly bent). Ask them to tell you if the top of your rounded back looks level, or if it appears higher/lower on one side. Hope that makes sense.
      If both sides of your back aren’t level with each other when you do this exercise, it’s likely you do have scoliosis and should see a specialist to confirm the condition and advise you on your options to manage/correct it☝️

    • @KristineKade
      @KristineKade 4 роки тому +1

      I have Scoliosis too i got a surgery to straighten it tho. If you're wondering what surgery i got its basically a metal in my spine to keep it straight. (sorry if my english isn't the best)

      I have polymyositis which is a muscle atrophy disease. I love it when people say, “Have you tried working out?”
      No but I do go to physical therapy to help me improve my strength so I can get up from a chair on my own or help me pick things up that weigh more than like 2 lbs, but yeah you’re right. Let me jump on the treadmill or start doing push ups. I’m sure that’s all I needed.

    Idk about you or other blind people. By since I’m legally blind and can fake being sighted pretty well, anytime I tell someone I’m blind they tend to respond with “oh I’m blind too.”
    No. No. No. you have poor vision that gets corrected to average when you put in contacts. That’s different.

    • @sadcat3602
      @sadcat3602 5 років тому +13

      My dad’s legally blind or at least he was when he was a kid and he prefers his contacts to his glasses. My eyesight is only slightly better so I’m not technically legally blind but I’m pretty damb close.

    • @copicgirl8057
      @copicgirl8057 5 років тому +22

      Really, people say that? That is SO rude!!! My partner is legally nearly blind (he has under ten degrees of his field of sight left); he has usher syndrome and so he also is hard of hearing. I know, he can see in the center.
      I have worked as an optician some years ago and the dioptries don't say nothing about being "blind" or not. My sister has 10 dioptries and has a better vision than a lot of other people. Blindness or legally blindness is something you can't correct with glasses. People have to learn this.

    • @jacquelinesmith-jackson2815
      @jacquelinesmith-jackson2815 5 років тому +1

      CopicGirl
      Sadly that statement is not always true.
      In some cases someone being legally blind can be corrected with glasses.
      Try to explain it this way, try looking at something through your elbow or your nose. It just doesn't work. When Molly says that she can't see, it means that she cannot see, and some crazy people out there think she can see colors or faces. But that statement is wrong.
      😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
      So someone with astigmatism can drive a car their entire life, while other people cannot. But science has created self driving cars, I don't really understand that.

      Becky Boncheveaux to be honest, my period is so light that I actually would need to see if I'm on my period. Through birth control, I know when it'll start. But before taking birth control I was surprised by my period pretty often, and since it is light, especially in summer, I thought the wetness came from sweat.. so sometimes I noticed the problem quite late 😅 sorry... too much information :D

    • @ashleymarietv2
      @ashleymarietv2 6 років тому +18

      YES!!!! Thank you! I get asked this ALL THE TIME. Most annoying thing ever. And if I say glasses wouldn’t work for me, they even ask secondary questions like, “well can’t you get like lasik eye surgery or something like that? Because that sucks, you should do something about it.” Ugh. That can also be offensive, because as if I’d choose this for myself if I had the choice, right? It also makes me wonder if people think I’m dumb asking about glasses. I mean, do people generally walk around with bad eyesight not knowing that glasses exist and could help them? It doesn’t even make sense.

      Well I’m not legally blind but I do have poor vision because I’m near sighted so I wear glasses and when people see them they like to take them off my face and try them on and then proceed to sit there and tell me how “blind” i am or how I can’t see.......... it’s literally like 🤦🏾‍♀️ wow thank you so much because I wasn’t aware that MY eyes a on MY face aren’t fully functional or don’t focus like there’re supposed to but now that you’ve pointed it out I’m sure I’m gonna magically get better

      I did a research essay on this and studies have found that it depends on the type of blindness (i.e. spectrum), when they became blind (if they were born blind or if they progressively/suddenly came blind), how they became blind and stuff like that.
      It depends on each blind person, there isn't a specific answer to 'how do blind people dream?'. If I remember correctly, our dreams are based on our reality so if you were born blind you won't 'see' in your dreams like a sighted person, but if you lost your vision throughout your life, what you experienced prior to losing it can be part of your dreams.

      But I have ppl freak out about me testing my blood sugar to write down.
      While yes, my SD does a great job and I about know where my numbers are on his first alert....
      My Drs still want every detail, and since many argue about how reliable an SD is- I have to get the exact readings from the little machine...
      He usually alerts to get my attention, I go down the list of command words I've trained him with...
      And he paws me again once I reach the command he's alerting for.
      Then me and whoever is driving go for food and while waiting I test my blood....
      I walk slow due to a shattered back, literally.
      So by the time I get somewhere hidden, I'm not going to be able to make it back before it gets hard(er) to walk.
      And I just don't like dragging out my medical supplies in a bathroom!
      Just no.
      Luckily the food places in my town know us well and always has a place that hides us from view(mostly) but gives my SD enough space...
      It just ticks me off when someone goes out of their way to stare at what I'm doing and then flips saying I need to do it in the restroom...
      I try not to mouth too badly about how would they like of their Drs drew their blood over a toilet..
      But some days..
      Uhg.
      I've had the same sort of things happen when I use my inhaler or someone thinks I'm going to use my EpiPen...
      (Haven't had to yet thankfully)
      Like just walk away bro, close ur eyes or something.

      It's hard to word things to where I'm able to get the lesson across, while also not being spoken over by a family member trying to smooth things over.
      (Unfortunately due tk uncontrolled occular migraines I can't drive, as my SD only alerts to the migraine and not the symptoms that start piling up before it- like depth perception, brain fog, eyes not seeing far enough out.... Troublesome.)

      I was wondering why this was a question because without fail I can feel when mine is starting I'll literally be laying in bed with my guy and suddenly jump up and be like I'm starting my period and run to the bathroom lol I've never really had an issue with not knowing so interesting to see some people aren't aware.

    One of my eyes was legally blind for most of my childhood, and it’s still a pretty sucky eye. People would ask, (and still do) “what do you see?” Or “is it just black in some places?” And I’m like, I can’t explain what nothing looks like. Like, what if you had no eyes? You don’t see black or white, you literally just don’t see. It’s like a little bit of nothingness has been mixed in with normal vision. That the only way I can explain it.

      You can also try thinking of "how much/what does your hand/elbow/whatever see?" which is again nothing, not blackness, right. But that sometimes confuses people.

So I wanted to ask, when you explain to another person who doesn’t have your kind of disability or any disability at all, do you say normal people or something else?

      Angie Lopez in terms of ASD most people (myself included) would refer to non-autistics as ‘neurotypical’
      I have Aspergers and I would say that I experience the world differently to neurotypicals? I find it very difficult to read facial expressions, tone of voice and body language. Eg I might think someone is angry when actually they’re just tired or concentrating. I can also get easily overloaded with anything sensory such as bright lights, strong smells and too much noise (concerts are hell!) there are a lot of autism stereotypes like rainman and sheldon cooper from Big Bang theory, a lot of these aren’t necessarily true and actually quite irritating. I’m terrible at maths and physics, I’m also very disorganised 😂 I have some social skills and I sometimes understand sarcasm but I just have to work a bit harder and I get more tired out after socialising than a neurotypical. These are just a few things I can thing of off the top of my head and are completely different for each individual. Sorry that was a bit of an essay!

I hated going to school because of the noise and the there’s too many people. Thank you for answering my question.

I’m constantly wanting to eat more then I can because I see it and while my eyes are telling me that looks good and I want to eat it my stomach says no. Have you ever had that problem where you are full and then you smell popcorn or bbq and suddenly you are hungry again? As a blind person, I totally agree with you on all these. I think one of the most annoying things is that people assume that I have an intellectual disability as well. When I mention I can't see, they immediately start talking to me like I'm 2. I use that comparison because I have a cousin who is autistic and that's how his parents and teachers talk to him. Really gentle, extremely encouraging over the little things, stuff like that.

      hmm well I'm 5'2" and thin and nearly 37 and I still get mistaken sometimes for a 12 year old or someone in high school although lately people have been guessing I'm in my 20s. They tell me I'm supposed to be fatter with a bigger bust and wrinkles and grey hairs to be my age...and I'm just like uh some people are just size 0 with a small bust and non-wrinkly skin. Every once a year or so I get one grey hair. Then they're like "Oh I bet you pull it out." I say "no I just leave it there until it falls out on its own, I don't care..." then they're like "aging is bad. being tiny is bad." and I'm like "I find it to have lots of advantages like being able to fit in a tiny airplane bathroom, spelunking, tree climbing, being very aerodynamic when dancing, not having a big body or bust to get in the way when I'm backpacking, being able to sleep on my front if I feel like it...and being the same height as all the locals in Madagascar so they are more likely to accept me as one of them and I can more quickly integrate into their culture to save the environment with them..." so yeah this annoys them to see a woman that is okay with her body. If I'm not okay that's when they feel they can bully me to try to gain power over me or something. So they want us to be not okay. but to maintain our self esteem we should just not hand our power over to them and say we are okay with our small bodies. I like saying "Good things come in small packages." But this isn't the best response because then they start thinking about sex and I have to shut them up because they are being crass.

      You feel it, 100%, haven’t you ever had that moment where you’re out with friends at a cafe or at school and the second you stood up, you felt it? And you knew you had to get to a bathroom ASAP. You just can tell by the feeling of it. I won’t go into too much details because it’s TMI but people like to be dry. And you can tell when you’re not dry all throughout your period and that tells you what’s going on.
      For me, my biggest thing when I first went blind was worrying if I had any spots on my pants. Because even though I could feel my period, I was always so anxious that I didn’t get to a bathroom in time. Most women can see whether they’ve had an issue or not but I couldn’t, because after awhile, it dries. I had to ask my mom a lot to make sure it wasn’t on my pants. Thankfully she never saw anything so I guess I did a pretty good job ;) haha it’s funny because I spent so long agonizing over my period, because my periods are so heavy due to endometriosis. And really I shouldn’t have worried at all because it really is easy to tell what’s going on without seeing it. Hope this helps! Sorry if I did get too TMI in the end lol

    OMG, some of those are sooo stupid! Specially the period one, eating one and wiping :D I have PCOS and always struggled with bad acne all over my body because of that and the most common question is: "And have you tried to wash yourself?" ... No, never. In fact I don't even wipe myself on the toilet and that is why I smell like honey, because I'm surely not using shower gel that smells like that. -.- Really? I think that for people with acne is properly washing themselves the first thing they do to try to get rid of it. Also, on a job interview they asked me if I look like that (acne and scars) all the time as if I could choose days when it's better and those when it's worse. Like, yes, when I go to work, I'm gonna look normal and I will have acne only on weekends, don't worry.

      omg i feel you. ive struggled with acne a lot on my face and it makes me so self-conscious. I don't get rude comments that much because its so natural for some people to have acne, people don't usually care. But that's dumb, like you really think someone with acne is not gonna be hygienic and try and stay clean. No one wants acne but its not something that you can just wash away like greasy hair.

      @@danielleyouie8028 My daughter had severe acne for 4 years. She was getting made fun of by a few girls because of it. We went through 5 dermatologists (Your derm should care more about solving the problem rather than selling you expensive stuff out of their case of "goodies" in the front office.
      The derm we ended up with didn't mention that case at all & was more than happy with her using her Doxy, the 2 different soaps she recommended from Target, one medicated/one gentle, her Sephora exfoliating mitt & her Belif Aqua Bomb Moisturizer that she loves). Now she's had clear skin for 5 months & after a year of having no acne she will start her laser treatments for the scarring, probably 1 during spring break & 1 or 2 treatments next summer depending on the downtime she's looking at.
      My husband had severe acne in high school as well but men's facial skin is different so his scarring wasn't much of an issue for him after age 22. He also didn't ever pick at his when it was bad so the scarring was minimal all things considered.
      Finding a competant dermatologist is key. She just turned 15 a couple weeks ago & is going to be a Sophomore so she will be good for her last 3 years of high school. I hope you guys find what works for you. I understand just how hard it can be & just how damaging it can be emotionally because of nasty people.
      Good luck & have a great day!

      Tazhie Nunurbusinezz My acne isn’t severe enough that dermatologist is needed but severe enough that it’s noticeable and makes me feel no good about myself. I have 2 different face washes, both Neutrogena, and 2-3 moisturizers, and 2 acne treatments that I use daily, yet I still experience bad acne. Do you have any tips?

    I am visually impaired/legally blind due to an enlarged optic nerve and other eye and brain issues. Last winter I was on an immune altering medication and so I was being precatious with holiday germs. When I wore a facemask I got asked more than once by a stranger "what is wrong with you?" ... Why? Just why? (Full story on my UA-cam's lol)
    I also get asked if I am training my service dog ... mmmm no argh de har. That is why we need more folks like you on UA-cam hugs

      Katie Johnson i’m a blindy yeah it’s really really difficult, but sometimes it can be even worse though when the opposite happens, like one time I literally had someone with guiding me and then he literally asked me OK so where are you parked and then it hit him like several seconds later that he’s helping a blind woman and she probably didn’t park her car somewhere in the parking lot LOL

      I have MS which at times you can look like you're perfectly fine because you can be walking normally. I can walk but if it's really hot I get drop foot and fatigue a lot (also tripping over words when I'm talking and cog fog), when it's cold I get extremely stiff and sore, and I get the you're fine...you don't look like you're sick so you don't need a handicap placard or any of that. But I guess that's why some people call MS the "But you look so good" illness lol.

    Questions About My PSD I’m Tired Of Hearing:
    Why do u have a dog/why do u have a service dog?
    What’s wrong with u?
    Are you training that dog?
    So he just provides emotional support?
    If everyone with anxiety had a service dog, everyone would have a service dog.
    Anxiety/panic disorder isn’t a disability.
    Where is the certification/papers for the dog?
    Etc. etc. etc.
    (Sorry I was super annoyed to by a public access issue so I had to vent haha)

    I'm visually impared, I see things floating around my vision which is very distracting and blocks a lot of my vision and I do not have perifual vision. When I tell people this they go stand next to me and say *CAN YOU SEE ME?* (No I can't) or the get obnoxusly close to my face and say *CAN YOU SEE ME NOW* (Yes but get out of my face I can see you when you're are within normal distance from me) It's super weird.

    Not really a question, more like a remark. When I was 16, I got badly depressed and most of the few people I told (including my parents) just said "You don't even know what depression is, you're too young to know how hard life can get."
    After a while, my parents took me to a shrink and the shrink told them I was actually in a severe depression and needed help and space from them. (I'm fine now tho :D)

    "You're dating a guy? So you're straight now?" Nope, still bisexual. "You couldn't have a mental illness, you do (insert thing here)." The best one wasn't even said to me, it was very loudly said near me though. I was called rude for not giving up my seat on public transit to someone older than I was. I had been walking all day on bad feet (birth defect) and was in severe pain; standing the hour to my hometown would have been agony.
