That's actually one of my favorite things about the tmnt series. Writers get to explore the characters and their world in different ways with each iteration. Retaining the main aspects of the original while also adding a fresh new spin on it is what keeps a long-running series alive

I would also point out that in some iterations splinter was the pet of homoto Yoshi and not homoto himself. In the 2003 series Baxter stockman never turned into his fly form at all, also in 2014 movie they were April's pets (the turtles and splinter) but yet it's not "canon"

I HATE when people who aren't into a show or Fandom talk about Cannon. They complained about Superman (with the new series) having electric powers.
You know the power that Superman has had for decades now and is the explanation of why Superman can even fly or be bulletproof.
Top it on the fact that women can't exist in media unless they are sex icon. See the new Fable game release. The main character was a women that isn't "pretty enough", and all these Neckbeard youtubers were quick to call the game "woke" because the customizable character wasn't fuckable enough to them.
They made the same complaint about Aloy from Log Hozion, and Ellie (The Last of Us) being gay made her ugly (according to the same group of folks). But no one whined when GTA made us play a fat, out of shape balding man.
If the woman isn't hot and fuckable, neckbeards lose their ever living minds, even if they've never played or was interested in the Franchise to start with.
Internet and anime brain rot made them forget that women can be ugly, or gay or whatever too and they hate being reminded of that.

What makes April's design "controversy" even more stupid than it would normally be Is that April herself has the most inconsistent design ever.
    - In the OG comics she has black and curly hair
    - In the 80's show, she has short brunette hair
    - In the 2003 version, she has a very red shade of red hair and green eyes
    - In the 2012 version, she's a ginger with blue eyes

Heck, TMNT's og creators were split on whether she's white or mixed race. Eastman, one of the two creators, based April on his former ex who was mixed race. Tho, what ethnicity she was is everyone's guess. After they split, April was drawn more white in the comics later on.

    • @Purplesquigglystripe
      @Purplesquigglystripe 8 місяців тому +14

My theory is that they did this to make the turtles look appealing in comparison to the humans and to visually represent how the mutants aren’t horrible monsters compared to the humans.
And I agree, the ugly art style is so unique. I love that it looks so different to most 3d animated movies, which all have the same style. Also they are definitely trying to appeal to boys (or cater to stereotypical boy interests at least) and bring back some of that ugly 90s cartoon aesthetic.

One of the two original comic creators, Kevin Eastman, always drew April as mixed. NYC has had Black and Irish communities since 1830, and black people have been in Ireland since the 1700s. This should be the least controversial race swap of all time.

@funnydotexe1782 My pleasure, so essentially, the mutants in TMNT are like the citizens of Paradis, they're excluded and prejudiced against into seclusion.
Superfly therefore stands in for Eren, a character who believes his kind will never be safe until their oppressors are entirely eliminated, all in the guise of being a cool badass.
Just like Eren, both their parents were killed by their respective oppressors' attempts to eliminate them (Marley and TCRI), and guide their friends into committing crimes for the sake of repairing their place in the world. Superfly and Eren are both warped by their ideals, turning into huge abominations, as their friends turn against them.
Unlike AOT, while we do sympathize with Superfly, he's clearly presented in the wrong, and everyone immediately turns on him. Eren on the other hand, basically succeeds, and whether he has the right idea or not is made much more vague. Clearly a problem, since he's wiping out everyone.

They made her look REAL. I grew up on TMNT in all it's forms thanks to my older brother, and I love the franchise to this day. Growing up with that older design of her; always made me think she was an adult woman, not a teenager. Huge tits, super skinny. Stunning. This April looks realistic and they get mad. When "hot" women video game characters are given a more realistic design they riot. Seen it alot recently and it sucks. You don't see us getting mad over them changing "hot men" characters, do you? You are absolutely correct, normal average women or less than average if you are comparing them to endless unattainable perfection are more bullied and belittled than those of higher beauty standards. With adjustments to my hair and a pair of glasses I look exactly like the new April and even when I was slim but busty I still got made fun of with one guy in high school calling me ugly even up in adult hood. He once pointed to Nikki Minaj and asked why I don’t look like that, why am I so ugly he asked. I simply said, because most of that, the parts you like, the parts you deem attractive, aren’t real as it was common place knowledge that Miss Minaj had plastic surgery but let’s say it is real, her bottom, bust, and full lips. Why is that the standard for beauty? And if it is the standard for beauty then why am I ugly? I have full lips, I have a large chest always have, and while I don’t have a Kim K butt I have thick thighs assuredly. So what made me ugly to him and not just him but everyone, men and women alike? I’ve since stopped asking and accepted that if those claims were true and not just the vile twisted nature of jealous or confused teens then that is their truth and I have my own. It took a long time but I know I am beautiful but not every woman knows that. Thinking of women I’ve always found beautiful I know I can see it and I hear it even they have their moments of doubt or hide it very well. I mentioned people saying Margot Robbie is mid and that sparking intense fights over how gorgeous she is. Margot herself does not feel attractive. To paraphrase she said “I do not feel sexy. Not when I’m being me.” Seeing her cry, seeing her raw self hidden behind the smiling white veneer covered in powdery pink in the Barbie movie, that’s when she became beautiful to me and that’s how all people are beautiful to me, their personality their souls their very nature their intelligence their passion. I only wish more people, not just women but all genders wouldn’t feel they are ugly because, at least to me, the ugliness doesn’t come from the case but the contents.

The animation, the amazing soundtrack, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, FIRE. You know sometimes CHANGE is good.

@@Lulu_Lime There is no point in arguing with the likes of you people... You get so butthurt instantaneously. Can't you just ever debate a person and see where they're coming from? No! Apparently not... All you guys ever do is put up your defenses instantly and insult or trash a person instead of actually talking. It's kinda silly. And the previous reply to my comment is proof of this. Instead of trying to reason or see where I'm coming from and understand me possibly, you insult me, and say I'm "illiterate". Then you all get that hive mind mentality and gang up on me liking the persons " sick burn" they did on me. Instead of trying to see where I'm coming from. It's crazy... If the internet is rotting anyone's minds... I can tell you right now it surely isn't my mind.
Cause unlike you people I don't instantly insult, and walk away, I try to hear the person out. Then when it proves to be a lost cause I either leave and insult the person on the way out or I leave. You guys forget the first part and go straight to the insults, and dog pile on people like me. Cause I guess it's easier to do that and it requires less brain power to insult someone than to talk to them. So again... Like I said. It's not my brains rotting, it all of you...
Last thing... Even without the internet, it doesn't take a genius to tell that movies are shit now. It's pretty apparent in the writing.
Now for the insult, you ready? I'll do it in another reply as to not let this one get deleted. Cause it has a link... To a UA-cam video, but sometimes you can't even link those. So I'll do it separately. As to not let all my hard work typing go to waste.

Honestly Splinters sexuality and Aprils race are not important to the story, unless they make it so. I know that in one of the more recent versions he even had a wife and child and it plays an important part to his character. Splinter/Hamato Yoshi, has never ever been blatantly stated to be leaning one way or the other so saying “Gay Splinter?! Not my Splinter! That’s not canon!” Is strange. Even in the most obscure things like the live action shows, the musicals, and the anime he was never hinted to have a preference. He was too busy raising his turtle sons and training them to think about getting some booty and in some respects might have even felt it would be difficult seeing as he is a damn rat now! An old Japanese man rat lol As far as April her appearance did startle me at first, as did her previous black appearance in the last animated TMNT outing but I’ve since gotten over it. The turtles have had soooooo many iterations, so many universes and canons, some with even a fifth member (usually female!) There have been characters added and taken away, races and gender swapped, roles swapped, love stories added, character traits redefined but what should always hold true is they are teens they are mutants they are ninjas and they are turtles!

Although my only real gripes with the film are 1. There’s a certain character who gets killed off early in the film(I’m keeping it vague for those who haven’t seen it) and he’s one of my favorite characters in the franchise and felt a bit of a waste. 2. I’m kinda sick of one of the turtles having a crush on April as a plot point. Being realistic I understand teenage boys hormones but doesn’t make me like this any more especially since the 2012 version with Donnie.

"That's how Hollywood is nowadays, you can't be a good character without being gay or having some kind of political identity..."
Maybe that has something to do with the fact that up until now gay people haven't had the *chance* to be good characters. For as long as the film industry has existed, people with "political identities," aka. anything other than the cis, het, white male default, were pretty much relegated to the sidelines. When a movie did feature a gay character, they were usually stuck being the MC's gay friend at best and outright villain at worst. There were very rarely any LGBTQ characters written to be the main focus of the story, and even then, like with 'Brokeback Mountain,' the characters' sexual orientation absolutely *had* to be the driving force behind the film and bear some sort of major significance on the plot, lest the filmmakers be accused of "forced diversity" and having gay characters in their movie just for the sake of it as a way to virtue signal.
But now that LGBTQ characters are *finally* getting just a tiny sliver of the spotlight after being denied it for so long, people like the guy I quoted all have to pretend that it's this scary, awful thing, some sort of cis, het, white male erasure, when all it is, really, is an attempt to balance a set of scales that have been pretty heavily tilted in one direction--theirs--for most of history.
