STUCK ABOARD for 5 days 💨⚓⛵ GALES in the Bahamas! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 274

  • What do you do stuck onboard for 5 days as your house is beaten by the wind and waves? As sailors we live and die by the weather. Every morning wake up, make some coffee, then check the weather. Sometimes the forecast is nice and we can stay put, but sometimes we gotta move our house to somewhere with better protection. In this episode we decide to move Delos to a new island to seek better protection. We have a fantastic sail set the hook, and begin exploring the amazing uninhabited island of Buena Vista in the remote Ragged Islands of the Bahamas. Soon the wind starts to kick up and we get pinned onboard for 5 days of terrible wind and weather!
Sending much love to everyone out there. XXOO- Brian, Kazza, and The Little Nugget

As a parents of 3 children (6,4 and 1 y/o) who also sail our 38' boat on weekends. My wife and I are amazed at your ability to juggle sailing, filming and parenting. We always find it difficult to juggle sailing and parenting at the same time. If you decide to head into the great lakes, we would love to show you around our part of the world.

Wind blowing through pine needles has got to be one of the best sounds in the world, right up there with gentle waves slapping the hull.

I'm a 70 yo Aussie from Canowindra in NSW, Australia. Had a trailer sailor for a number of years - mainly cruised the inland waterways near Sydney. Also some blue water cruises on bigger yachts in SW Western Australia. I thought my sailing days were over then I discovered Delos. Have loved the videos and all the different crew you've had on board and have particularly enjoyed the two of you and the beautiful little Nugget! Both of you such wonderful parents and Kazza - am amazed at how flat your Mummy tummy is. Brian - love watching you fix stuff and the way you skipper Delos and care for your crew. I'm up to episode 274 - nearly caught up and wish you well with your family on the sea. Keep sailing - love you guys....Namaste

Awww another amaze balls episode mates. Shared your tears Kazza. Cap’n Breeyawn - “Rum and coke, chips, salsa, baby, wife, sunset.” Thank you guys for reminding me that I AM NOT STUCK here on land these past 6 months from a botched foot surgery, that it’s only work and perseverance that stand between me and a return to Living the Dream. All the best, fair winds always ⛵️🤙🏽🍻

I can relate... flying a drone on a windy day over water (and especially landing it) is nerve wracking! Nobody who watches these beauty shots of boats underway knows how hard they are to film successfully until they've tried it. And sometimes there's no beach you can crash it into as a last resort. Incredible work, Brian!

Brian talks with Sierra exactly as I spoke to my two boys, just as if she were already an adult, just without information about the current situation. They are both graduated from college and I can tell you that treating your baby like a tiny adult really pays off. They sort of grow into it.

Those few minutes of video on the beach with the fire...boy did the whole vibe of the timeline of Delos come through. Been watching for about 5 years now, and have seen all of the videos...but those few minutes...they captured everything. Magic. The old party vibe, many of us remember the beach fires of old...and the transition to the new, family of 3, watching the sunset in a beautiful remote anchorage.
I can see why it hit Karen the way it did. It was indeed a moment.

Hey guys, Bahamian from Exuma here. That camp on Buenavista Cay was the home of a Ragged Island man named Edward Lockhart, he rode out Hurricane Irma at the camp alone back in Sept 2017. I'm assuming that he hasn't returned since being rescued off the cay a week after Irma passed. This story did actually get some international attention.

He actually did return, he had dinner with us on board, in 2018 he had a stroke and had to leave the island. He still resides in Nassau. He is related to the Lockharts in Duncantown. He loved Buena Vista and always welcomed cruisers. We loved listening to his stories, have him make us conch salad, and build a fire to share a steak with him!

Too funny cool at 16:27 :-) Here in the Channel Islands area (Santa Barbara California USA) it blows like that every day and easily 40 up to 60 knots at the island channels and even 80 knots every year in our famous Santa Ana winds. We have some of the most consistent heavy weather sailing in the world to test your boat and crew before heading out on a long cruise (or just to live and sail all year like the locals do). Nice to see some whitecaps and that you two are prepared and take everything seriously :-)

I don't fly drones but found this useful info on another site from a viewer that obviously does...
Tips for taking off from a moving object such as a boat...
    1. Never take off in P-MODE... always use A-MODE. A-MODE ignores the GPS and the aircraft will not try to hold it's position in space. It will only try to maintain altitude.
    2. Hold on to the landing gear tight while starting the takeoff sequence and slowly release pressure from your hands once you know the aircraft is stable. Your body is strong enough to overcome all the thrust from the motors if it were to correct for boat movement. This is especially important if you forget to put it in A-MODE.
    3. Set the "Home Point" to be the controller and NOT where you take off (DJI GO APP). This is critical!! If you don't do this, and the boat is underway, you will surely lose your drone because if you lose signal it will start to fly away from you and go back to the home point which is now a mile behind you. You must press the update home point regularly.
    4. When landing, fly the aircraft as close as possible to the person catching it and slightly above their head. Have them reach up and grab the landing gear firmly and stiffen their arms to prevent any corrective actions by the aircraft. Remember, your arms have more power than the aircraft so don't be afraid of it or it WILL bite you!!
    5. If you do lose signal underway try to stop the boat immediately. It is going to fly back to the position of the last time you updated.

Brian, watching back videos in particular "shit storm" have you thought about using "Vicks" in your nose to cancel the smells like the medical examiners do. It's just a thought maybe it will help. Enjoy watching your videos 😊 calming, interesting, fun on & on. I am 75 yrs. old so my travel days are over but you have opened up an entire new world to me. Thank you. Please let everyone involved know how much I enjoy. Tracie😀⛵🧻
