  • The South Dakota’s Centennial Trail is an approximately 111-mile continuous footpath that runs north to south through the Black Hills, from Bear Butte to Wind Cave National Park. It was completed in 1989 and commemorates South Dakota 100th anniversary of statehood.
Those who hike the trail’s entirety get to experience:
    Bear Butte State Park- gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/bear-...
Fort Meade National Recreation Area- www.blm.gov/visit/fort-meade-...
    Black Hills National Forest- www.fs.usda.gov/blackhills
    Custer State Park- gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/custe...
    Wind Cave National Park- www.nps.gov/wica/index.htm
If you are looking for people to give you a ride from Hot Springs or Wind Cave to Bear Butte or to aid with other transportation or supply needs, email LakotaMade@Gmail.com to discuss terms and logistics. They were a big help to me and made for great, interesting conversation too.
This video is not intended to act as a how-to guide. Always properly plan and prepare before going into the backcountry. Below are some excellent reference points to help with a section or thru hike of the Centennial Trail:

I am far from an expert, but I had a few conversations with local Native Americans about how much deep meaning Bear Butte, Wind Cave and the Black Hills holds with them. Always be respectful to Native beliefs and customs and remember you are traversing land they still hold sacred. Again, not an expert, but this is perhaps a good source to learn some basics:

Loved this! I grew up in SD and our family vacations were always to the Hills . . . I've hiked several of the amazing trails out there over the years, but the Centennial is on my bucket list. Slider playing trombone was a highlight for sure, and WOW that ending at Bear Butte - perfection.

I live in the Black Hills. My first camping experience was at Sheridan Lake, I am told, was in 1955, when I was 6 months old. While I have section hiked almost all of the Centennial Trial over the years, this year as a 67-year-old I am planning a 12+ day solo thru-hike of the Trail & some of the side trails! I just stumbled on this video in my daily UA-cam searches... I have hiked a lot of the Black Elk Peak area (I am from South Dakota) and I go out every year in the early summer to help decompress after school (I am a 53-year old College Senior)
I have thought about doing the entire trail, but it would have to be a 5 or 6-day adventure for me. Seeing this inspires me to do the trek.. Would make a good video for the Vlog/Blog I have just started to keep of my adventures.
    Thanks for sharing!!!

"Seeing this inspires me to do the trek." That's 100% why I record and make videos of my hikes; I want people to see the trail and be inspired to hike it.
If you do the trek and document it in some way, please let me know. And FYI, it's usually a much dryer trail than when I hiked it. Bring enough water carrying capacity.

Absolutely stunning, Ive got a true appreciation for this video after have hiking the trail for myself. The first 8 or so river crossings you had were all dry when i went through, i had a 26 mile stretch with not a drop of water on the trail all the way from Dalton lake to the horse camp outside of Sturgis. The ATV section sure was hell wasn't it? Nemo sure was a sight for sore eyes, i was pretty much out of battery for my camera by that point so i was extremely thrilled to see it (all other camp grounds with electricity were closed for the season) Glad to see i wasn't the only one to walk the road and skip the section of trail when i got to Pactola. All in all an amazing video and amazing hike my man. My most favorite part of the trail was most defiantly the hilly prairie area at 22:00, the sun setting behind those hills was the single most beautiful thing i have seen in my entire life. Its too bad you missed out on the summit of bear butte at the beginning and had to go back to finish it, but its also a good thing cause you wouldn't of met stylo and slider otherwise. Thanks again Mike!

Awesome! You are the first person I have seen that posted the whole trail. I have hiked Bear Butte, All over Black Elk, and Custer but have not done the whole CT. I Love the Blackhills!

    • @2fargonebackpacking132
      @2fargonebackpacking132  3 роки тому +1

I appreciate the kind words. Black Hills are simply amazing.
I'd say 80-90% of the trail was well blazed. The blazes near roads and trailheads were sparse, thanks to some sticky fingers over the years.
I never did find a solid source for water. I'd reach out to some Black Hills Hiking FB groups right before your hike to get a decent gauge. I went during a strange high-water week. It can be a pretty dry trail. I'd bring a 4-liter water capacity during normal summer months.
I carried ALL my food, 10 days worth. Ended up hiking it in 6.5-7 days. Whoops. Rookie-ish mistake. The Pactola Lake marina or visitor center would likely hold on to your food. I'd call make arrangements to be sure. If I ever do the trail again, I'd definitely try to resupply.
If you attempt the whole trail, please let me know!

We grabbed a meal at the marina and got a taxi into Keystone to avoid the storm. The next day we linked up with where we stepped off the trail, which takes you to the base of the dam, essentially. As I recall, the trail follows the dam's runoff stream for a while rather than immediately to the other side of the dam.

@@HeadNorthMikeMcKay, I think it's definitely worth the trip. Stylo and Slider hiked the Appalachian Trail and complimented the Centennial Trail's diversity of terrain, views, etc. That's pretty telling.
Have fun on your hikes! I'll be keeping an eye out for more of your videos!

For sure, I am aiming for the Appalachian 2021 if finances line up. Looking for a trail to thru hike in the meantime to hold me over, this looks perfect! Also thanks for watching my videos, I always appreciate the support!
