In the Uk we call this method of stitching over knitted items Swiss Embroidery :) its the preferred method to adding patterns and characters to a sweater your knitting rather than knitting into it.
I actually got into knitting too by trying to knit my own Weasley sweater as my first project... it didn't turn out so well!! Adding duplicate stitch to an existing sweater is a really clever alternative!!
curvy letter problems... my name starts with an S so that makes it harder but I will finish it before xmas day so I can wear it as my christmas jumper. so excited!
and I drew my pattern by drawing squares a similar size to the Vs and shading them in to form an S but the squares weren't the same size at all so I ended up not following it and just making it up as I go along
did you ever finish it?? I'm an S too and I want a Weasley jumper to wear for Christmas soooo bad. If you did finish it do you have an insta I can see it on??
You are the best. Only reason I didn't want to click on this was because the thought of knitting and entire jumper was intimidating, but this is awesome! By far, one of the best fandom-based DIY channels out there.
Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad that you clicked anyway - knitting the whole thing was super intimidating for me too, which is why I was so excited to find this shortcut!
I found the marking as you go technique you used for the pattern also can be applied for complex embroidery patterns. Makes everything so much easier and saves time.
I just finished a final fantasy pattern for My boyfriend's valentines gift. This technique helped, as the pattern had quite a few different colours, and also I spread the project out over a few days. So it helped not to loose track of where I was.
I had to do X's rather than V's though, since my sweater was a different kind of knit, so you can tell it's embroidered(kinda sloppily) but isn't it supposed to look handmade, after all?
Hey Lauren this is simply amazing! I'm a begginer in knitting, I have only knitted two scarves but your tutorial is so well explained that it gave me inspiration! I was scared of doing something like that, because it felt complicated but now I'm feeling more secure! Thank you!
Thinking I might do this for my kids, but I crochet instead of knit. I'm thinking of making an applique using the letters of their names and then just stitching it onto the sweater. Although, I really love how your version is incorporated into the actual stitches. It really was a BRILLIANT idea! :)
+URSTANDINGONMYTOES That sounds awesome! I'm glad that you liked the video. Thanks so much for the nice comment and good luck making these for your kids!
This is amazing and doesn't look too complicated for a beginner knitter like me! I'm way more comfortable with crocheting, but this seems like a fun project while catching up on podcasts. I love your DIYs!
Hi Lauren!! By some odd coincidence, I actually did this exact craft a couple of months ago!! I decided on an R like Ron's and rather than making a letter template, I used chalk to temporarily draw where I wanted the letter to go on the jumper and from there, I did the duplicate stitch across all of the chalk covered stitches on the jumper. My jumper had a kind of ribbing in too, but I didn't think to do an extra stitch at the side (that's a great idea!!). My version ended up with a narrow line between the columns of stitches. I made another version for my sister for Christmas with her initials on it too (It's blue with an F like Fred's from the book). Awesome video by the way!! =)
Very cool! I just got home from the Wizarding World last week and sweaters there are so expensive. I saw some people with their own homemade Weasley sweaters that were so cute! I totally wanted to make one :) This video comes at a perfect time.
0justBETHANY I had the same experience last summer! Also, their sweaters had Harry and Ron's initials on them and I wanted my own. This way, you can choose the colors and the letter! I'm glad that you liked this video. Thanks for the nice comment! :)
This is a great idea. I have always wanted one of my own in Ravenclaw colors because, well, I imagine that if any of her children had been sorted into Ravenclaw, Molly wouldn't have hesitated to adapt her pattern. I love it! Can't wait finally to have one of my own!
***** I thought I'd remembered that they were all different colors so I went back and checked. Ron's was always maroon, but everyone else had varying colors every year.
Right. I can only ever clearly remember Ron's very clearly and since his is red and gold, I guess my brain just supplied a connection that wasn't there!
I am going to make this for my best friend and I and wear it at the Fantastic Beasts Premiere AND give it to him as an early Christmas present, thanks so much for this Lauren!
I love duplicate stitch!! I would love to find a version of sweater I could use to make my own Weasley sweater. I knit, but haven't done a sweater yet!
If I had any knitting or sewing skills, I'd make one myself. Gryffindor red with a big gold C on the front. But, it looks like I'll just have to find one custom online.
so when I saw this in February, when it was uploaded, I decided that I wanted to make one that was grey with a red letter on it. I didn't get round to looking for a jumper for ages and one day when I was in a charity shop in a city I found a really nice skirt which is irrelevant but anyway the next time I was in that same city I walked past the shop and so I decided to go in because I thought I might find something else that I liked. Amazingly, I found a grey stocking stitch jumper in my size for only £1 so I was so happy.
Knitting a simple raglan sweater isn't terrible. Find a top-down, one piece design ($5 in Paris, which is free on Ravelry, is a good option and can be done with easy to find yarn. It's done in the round, so you don't have to change directions or anything). For the pieces that would be going a different direction, I just slip those stitches on to my working needle, wrap the yarns around each other so they're connected and knit those stitches backwards. It comes out looking like it was meant to be there the whole time and there's very little weaving in to do at the end. Not difficult at all. If you want to use this technique, just knit up the sweater and then use the same yarn in a different color to duplicate stitch the letter.
My mum knitted me my own weasley jumper and I love it soooooo much!! But if I ever grow out of it i'll try using your method, or I might make one for a friend :D
I'm sooo addicted to making weasley sweaters!!!! I just love them. I already made one for my ravenclaw on one for my slytherin friend in the house colours with there first letter on it. I just think its so hard to find a sweater with a good pattern AND the fitting floss in tge right colours!! But it's just soo cool!!!!!
ugh your videos are always so inspiring and flawless, I want to do all the diys which you do Id just never be able to do them as well as you and mine would look terrible. I just love your channel so much and your content is so original as it's difficult to find high quality good Harry Potter style diys on UA-cam! I just want to say that I love your channel and your videos so much and don't stop making them. xx
My boyfriend really wants a Weasley sweater but my skills are not up to it, and I can't afford the ones I've found on Etsy. I'm going to try this. Thanks so much!
This is really adorable and you did such a great job explaining this! 😊 I'm making these for my boyfriend and sister just because I've finally got them to be a fan of the series with me.
@@LaurenFairwx I didn't even think about the scarves until you said something. I want to make one for some of my family members. Is there a pattern for it that you recommend? I found two but they were hard and made very little sense to me.
It’s been 17 years since I looked up house scarf patterns so I don’t remember where I found them or if they still exist. My favorite way to do them is with a small circular needle, knit stitches all the way around, because I don’t have to remember to switch to purl and all of the yarn ends from changing colors end up inside the tube, then I flatten the whole thing and stitch the ends shut before adding fringe.
OH FROGS THIS IS GREAT!!!! My sister Zoe has Weasley hair and she REALLY wants a sweater. Christmas coming soon....... need yarn.......a-a-and and more yarn..............
I LOVE this idea! I'm a little late to the Harry Potter fandom. Just starting reading the books (currently almost done book 4) and I'm in my mid 20s oops lol. Better late than never I guess! I have to remember to do this next winter! Its such a brilliant idea!
This is an awesome idea! I have wanted to learn to knit for ages, this gives me a reason to! I love your videos Lauren, they deserve way more views and subscribers!
I really want to try this! I've always been too intimidated by this kind of thing, but you make it look achievable :) Ideally, I'd like to make one for every member of my family!
***** I like knitting, but I prefer easier items and preferably ones that only take a few hours to finish. Though, this tutorial doesn't require any (actual) knitting! :D
OH MY ROWLING I MUST DO THIS
***** You totally should!! It would be great. If you do, definitely send me a picture when it's finished! :D :D
Laura Your video is freezing up! :O
***** Oh no! I'm not sure why that's happening for you. It's playing fine for me. Sometimes my older laptop has trouble playing UA-cam videos though.

Omg! Finally a method that isn't too complicated!!!
THIS IS AMAZING.

Yo también!!!!!
I love that Molly Weasly made everyone these sweaters at Christmas. It was one of the many reasons I wanted/want to be a Weasly!
Your enthusiasm for the sweater was lovely :).
+Anie Loev I get pretty excited about things. :) Glad you enjoyed it!
watching her stitch is oddly satisfying.
I actually got into knitting too by trying to knit my own Weasley sweater as my first project... it didn't turn out so well!! Adding duplicate stitch to an existing sweater is a really clever alternative!!
Newt Scamander scarf!!! There isn't a tutorial out yet and I think people would love it if you did it first!
Cooper Graves Isn't it just his Hufflepuff scarf?

Glad we're on the same page! :)
What a great idea! Essentially you're kind of cross stitching over the existing stitches of the sweater. Love it!
I liked before I finished watching because I just loved her personality
Aww, thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial! I've never thought about doing this. Time to hunt down a muggle sweater and put my knitting skills to work.
I found the marking as you go technique you used for the pattern also can be applied for complex embroidery patterns. Makes everything so much easier and saves time.
Jessica Jones That's a great tip! I tend to freehand my embroidery like I'm drawing, but I've been meaning to try out a complex pattern.
I just finished a final fantasy pattern for My boyfriend's valentines gift. This technique helped, as the pattern had quite a few different colours, and also I spread the project out over a few days. So it helped not to loose track of where I was.
I made a Slytherin one for my boyfriend... But completely knitted, it took ages to figure the pattern out but he loved it!! *_*
seven years later, I plan to do this exact thing for my Slytherin boyfriend! haha
This is fantastic and oh so adorable!
PuddingFishCakes Thanks, Helga! :D
I did this today! I used a dark turquoise sweater and dark purple embroidery thread rather than yarn. It turned out very well!
I had to do X's rather than V's though, since my sweater was a different kind of knit, so you can tell it's embroidered(kinda sloppily) but isn't it supposed to look handmade, after all?

I found your page because of this video. Since watching this, I think I've watched at least five more. Great stuff here. I'm LOVING it!!!!

I'm going to turn my muggles sweater in draco ' s quidditch sweater. (not like I don't have enough of draco malfoy/slytherin clothes enough)..
I will put it in my knitted beanies! Great job.
I knitted my son a Weasley sweater...and then put his initial on with duplicate stitch. Because it's easier than intarsia (for me anyway).
this is really cool, i can't knit at all so I'm going to try this method.
Your embroidery hoop wall decorations are so adorable! Obsessed!!!
