Introducing her earlier would've made more sense, but telling her to spy on everyone during a costume party is smart. What in trying to say is that we needed to know about her earlier so this whole thing doesn't feel rushed (more than it already is) but having her execute her plan where she can disguise herself well is smart of her and the writers (for once)
I suddenly want to have 2 villainies groups that are unrelated have similar sounding names and the heroes don't realize they are fighting 2 different evil groups. The 2 groups knowing about each is optional.

Very good point about the costumes. The potential to play around with the unlimited limitations of the shows own rules and the writers don't capitalize on it. Do something wild and make Rosemary an actual dragon. Not only would this be pretty play into her reckless nature but also set up a very important future moment where Rosemary actually kills a dragon. Imagine nuances magic in general has in the world of High Guardian Spice. Not just old and new magic.
I like to imagine I'm the Wizarding world, it would be illegal to use transformation magic on Halloween. It could be really annoying trying to tell if the troll that wandered into town Square was a real threat or just some teenager

Sage’s outfit in this episode definitely would’ve been better as her main outfit, instead they just decided to make her look like an unimportant background character from Little Witch Academia.
At least the unforms that the witches wore in LWA were very unique, Sage's clothes are the most generic I've seen. Perhaps they were kept that way so it would be easier to draw/animate, but there's nothing that stands out, with the exception of her blue hair perhaps
That's the unfortunate nature of school uniforms. They definitely could've had the best of both worlds and the have the Halloween outfit as the main and the school uniform during class.
Ironically, I believe Olive is a recolour of the manga design of the main character from Tokyo Mew Mew. Think her name is Ichigo? I haven't followed the series since I first read it back in the early 00's, damn, now I feel old. 😅

@@BrightWulph Her design is basically a near ringer for Hime from Tokyo Black Cat Girl, the one-shot that served as the pilot pitch to Nakayoshi that would be vastly reworked, by editorial suggestion, into what Tokyo Mew Mew ended up as (such as an ensemble cast instead of a solo lead). That is to say, it was the progenitor to TMM and Hime was heavily redesigned to become Ichigo. The oneshot was reprinted in the tanks too, so it's not like it's some obscure lost media of the late Mia Ikumi's portfolio
To summarize my past comment on the first upload of this video, Cal shouldn't have been shocked by Snapdragon wearing feminine clothes because him living in a world where magic allows a person to change their physical appearance should habr desensitized him to the concept of a person changing themselves outwardly, let alone simply wearing a dress, a wig, and make-up.
To say nothing of them being high schoolers on Halloween. I remember one of my old high schools had a cross dressing day for seniors. Ironically, it was called "costume day".

You know what I hate, the concept that were living in a man's world which makes no sense when you factor in things like race, age and religion. Having Cal insult SD is just another example to prove men don't always have it easy compared to women.
Perhaps it's due to the fact that Olive is closer to a human? Though I think that one of the dragons from a previous episode was capable of speech, so perhaps many of the monsters that Rosemary slayed were sentient beings. Don't think the show was going to raise some moral questions like that
The two Tris made me think of Sauron and Saruman. The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest works of fiction of all time, but I still know people to this day who get those two characters mixed up because of that name choice.
In the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings adaptation, Bakshi or the producers and executives wanted to pre-emptively avoid what they think would confuse the audiences, so they had Saruman changed into "Aruman" to make him and Sauron more distinct.
At one point in the books the heroes see orcs carrying shields with an "S" on them and try to figure out who they belong to. They eventually decide it's Saruman because Sauron wouldn't use elf runes.
@@NobodyC13 It was probably a later thing they did in movies production since I recall them pronouncing “Saruman” normally in the first half of the movie until later on in the movie where they randomly chop out the S in the beginning of his name.
You don't even have to wait for the Silmarillion. Just look at The Hobbit. How many of the 13 Dwarves have names that start or end with the same syllable? Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur. Granted, several of them were directly related somehow, so it's a LITTLE more excusable, but when these are your MAIN cast, especially in a book without many illuatrations, it can definitely be confusing.
I agree that the chibi designs in one scene look more appealing than the actual style. As one-note as Olive appears, I think she was meant to be a take on the Bakeneko, a Japanese cat demon that can take on a human form (I actually have an interest in youkai). And I'm not really a big fan of the "2 friends falling out" cliché myself, unless either party had a GOOD reason to do this.
@@pablocasas5906 Neko-Musume is a half-yokai like Nezumi-Otoko, the details behind that is never really explored; while not expressly clarified, the way she derogatorily called Nezumi-Otoko a half-breed in the 80's anime would imply she is not one in that adaptation. While Shigeru Mizuki's depictions are what brought a lot of yokai folklore back into cultural relevance, this case was not the traditional depiction of them- bake-neko were previously painted as significantly more cat-like, as in they looked more like cats that did human-like things like walking only on their hind legs. wear clothes, etc. More like sapient cats than humans with vaguely cat-like features like Neko-Musume. That being said, yes, Olive looks like they were a little too 'inspired' by Tokyo Mew Mew and she looks very out place for it; she's almost a ringer for Hime from the prototype one-shot pitch for TMM, Tokyo Black Cat Girl.

It’s only a third into a twelve episode run the protagonists begin interacting with the antagonists directly and even then it’s through a proxy in Olive. Imagine if more time was spent on the overarching plot rather than what the earlier episodes were about.

You know, you bring up a good point about "For all Rosemary knows, she could have just as easily screwed everyone over" by breaking the thing that turned everyone in to stone: that actually would have been a lot more interesting if that DID happen, since it'd allow room for real character growth and further development, the heroes hoping that the antagonist has some way to reverse the damage done even though it's been made clear by the lore that the only way to reverse the damage was destroyed, thus increasing the tension and giving us some real believable conflict and stakes...as in, if they can't find a way to fix the damage, everyone will be stuck as statues forever; plus, it'd play in to the whole Guardian aspect of the show as defined by its own lore, and we can have more adventure in this high fantasy world. I hesitate to say this should have been the first episode, maybe a second or third episode once the characters and world are established, but had we condensed everything down and cut right to the bullshit instead of just being another generic "Everyone go to Magic School to learn how to Magical Girl, plz, k thx bai" type of anime, maybe this series could have been better; I mean, heck, Soul Eater basically did this but better...mostly...
That would be great, have the first part end with them breaking the thing, and now in part two they need to fight the catgirl not just for revenge, but since she cast the spell she's now the only one who can reverse it. It also adds another aspect to the fight scenes as the catgirl just wants to run away but the guardians need to keep her here. But, as has been said plenty of times, that would require actual thinking and writing.

Cal and Alister are just Strawmen. That's the Problem with them. Strawmen make poor villains/antagonists, because there is no depth, it's just a random person hating 'Insert thing here.' so the Writer can have a punching bag for the relevant topic. I don't have much to add with this one your criticisms of the setting and the ideas used summed them up in this one fairly well. Edit: Holy Up, I just had a thought, a truly Psychotic thought. So New Magic is able to do anything right? No Costs whatsoever (Queue Edward Elric Yelling in the distance.)? What's stopping some power hungry mother fucker from Creating like an Entire Massive Floating Continent, Putting Spells in place to prevent it from falling (Or Alternatively, just create this in the Sea and skip this step.) and creating ENTIRELY NEW SAPIENT SPECIES to worship and serve him like a God? Create entirely new Biomes that are impossible without magic (Deserts where Giant Magic Crystals grow, an Ocean that floats in the Air, etc.) and eventually attempt to conquer the world? Like REALLY think about the 'No Limitations or Costs.' Thing, this implies you could create entire Universes or Star Systems and just take over entire planets with this. That Barren Planet over there? Boom, habitable with Atmosphere and is now full of Gargoyles (Like from the Disney Show with Keith David.) and Goblins. Like holy shit, this setting is broken beyond belief, how hasn't there been a bunch of dictators and/or super villains in this setting?
I think Sage was exaggerating when she described New Magic as "limitless" and having "no cost". I mean, one of Redbud's terraspheres runs out of energy, which looks like a cost to me.
There's a graphic novel series called the Lumberjanes. It has similarities with it being fantasy and having somewhat similar characters archetypes with the main cast. But how it goes about telling their stories and handling the characters and tone, I feel like it’s what high guardian spice should've tried to aim for. If you have time check it out, I highly recommend it. There was going to be an animated series based off it picked up by Max but it was announced in 2020 and I wouldn't be surprised if it was quietly canceled during their purge.
Calamity Zaslav might have even written it off, as he is want to do (Which he had to stop doing as much because friggin' US Senators started paying attention and going "Hol' up, that sounds similar to insurance fraud.".).

Has it really been that long since the animated series was announced? It probably was shelved then. Anyways, might as well ask here if anyone knows of another series like Lumberjanes, just chill character driven stories that don't take place in a high school.
Something that bothered me was Rosemary's Halloween costume. I've seen that kind of outfit in anime quite often; and it's always as pajamas (typically little girl pajamas). It really takes me out of the fight scene. It looks too silly for me to take the stakes seriously.
I think Rosemary's Halloween costume is one of those full-body pijamas that have became popular in the last 10 or so years, I've seen them in different stores in recent times, they come in kid and adult size, I supposse they're a sort of a novelty, I've seen some models based on unicorns and even Pokémon like Pikachu and Eevee. But the fact that Rosemary wears one kind of drives me mad for some reason, since it's a piece of modern clothing, but the series has a sort of medieval fantasy setting, or at least it seems to be at times, because in this episode Snapdragon and Amaryllis use Virtual Reality goggles, and then we have Anise and her punk-style look, not to mention she's married to Aloe and nobody seems to mind. It feels like the writers couldn't decide the setting of the show

While I agree with the name thing, I'd argue that Ed, Edd n Eddy managed to be an exception that worked. I mean, "Edd" is Double D, but at least Eddy has an extra syllable. Then again, I still get Ed and Eddy mixed up from time to time, so what do I know?

So, the three evil masterminds behind evil are man, the three managers of the school are woman. It's a shame because if they were smart and the show wasn't canceled they could made such a twist on expectations. They had all the pieces. Imagine if it WAS the academy the ones doing evil, that "New magic" was the thing draining the world, that wasn't without a cost, unlimited. It had limits, they just tried to make it like that to make their students use it more to progress the plan and turn them dependant on it. Just a lie fomented by the highers up at the academy but how this three nice woman could do such wrong? Then the evil ones, know the truth and they are trying to stop this but they are painted like the bad ones on their acts of sabotage. Imagine the cat girl being just impulsive, doing wrong not because she is moraly in the bad side just to redeem and join the heroine party but just because she is desesperate. The heroines helping the bad side thinking it was the good one. I mean... The school sure likes to put it's students in extreme dangers, have sadistic teachers and such a high level of incompetence. What if that wasn't just because the writers are incompetent but because they REALLY are evil. Imagine if that WAS the case how good of a twist it would be. But we know that's just not the case. An agenda was more important to push than good writing.
It could've been a lot better than the actual final product. The thing we're watching seems really disconnected, and kept up by some "agenda" terms and ideologies that hardly have to do with the worldbuilding and themes of HGS.
Glad you said that thing that them being nice to Snap when they're experimenting isn’t the same as being supportive. Like, I think the way the main girls are portrayed come across as writing you'd see with a movie that has a click of trendy mean girls... Like no matter what, Snapdragon is going to have a "before" and "after" where some kind of change happens, doesn't really matter what the specifics entail. But here we see the girls and Snap at the beginning hate each other, or at least the girls hate Snap and Amaryllis. Then they start being friendly with Snap. It's not as if Sage or Rose got the wrong impression and learned more about Snap. It comes across as if the plot was Snap was overweight, and through the series they were losing said weight, and only then the girls start being nice to them. Oh, but only the "after" picture! Meanwhile Amaryllis comes across as liking Snapdragon as a friend and companion no matter what stage of their life they're in. It reminds me of a few odd cases of young mean kid in the fellow queer community that would just be mean and cynical of a person until the moment where they find out they're queer, then they do a face turn and go "this person can do no wrong" and be all nice, no matter if x person still has a bad attitude or not. I was excited to see in this queer world a character can still be a character and just happens to be a bully or rival. Since everyone is queer it obviously isn’t a strawman thing. But very soon it'll be obvious that the writers are stripping Snap’s traits away and forcing them to settle into a character who's just another friend members because...? It feels very gross. Not that Snap and Amaryllis should be bully villainous, but just imagine if they stuck to that level of rivalry that can challenge the main two! Now they'll just go on unrivaled, correct in everything, not allowed to grow or have an opportunity to show their heroic causes by rising up and defending their choices to those who are challenging their ideals. Nope. There's a moment in the rainy day episode where Sage and Rose talk and it basically goes: Sage "Snap’s a friend now" Rose "Okay!" Sage "Hmm... how about Amaryllis?" Rose "Nah, she evil, lol" Sage "Yep!" Like, what? Not to assume a fictional 2nd season scenario, but this makes me worried for Snap on a real level because it seems like these two would totally isolate and force them to break apart their life long relationship with Amaryllis.
Clearly someone on the animation team knew how to make an action sequence... Why didn't they lean into the action more!? Oh yeah, because they wanted to focus on the "story and drama"...

It is so messed up that a man dressing up as a woman is viewed as wrong and yet most woman indirectly crossdress every time they wear high heels because high heels were originally meant for men.
Or wear pants, but women dressing as men hasn't been treated the same as men dressing as women. A woman dressing as a man was 'indecent' but a man dressing as a woman was supposedly 'humiliating' and a man who willingly dresses as a woman with little incentive was perceived as him not being in his right mind. At least 60+ years ago.
Honestly, the only "good" reason to have two characters or companies named so similarly in a story is when mixing them up is the whole point, and even then there are better ways to do that.

You think if they just went with a chibi style for the art, they could have hired better writers? Like I said in the comments in previous videos, the creator blames the show sucking on not being able to hire better writers. I still find that hilarious considering this was the same person who bragged about the writers being "a diverse group of females." Also, does anyone else get the feeling that maybe these episodes were written with the intention to showing up earlier in the series? That would explain a few issues with the writing, and I'd believe it with how horrible this series is.
Sometimes I look at a character and I think: ‘this character’s design wasn’t made to convey who the character is visually, it was made specifically for someone to cosplay as’ which is basically free advertising for the show/game and an ego boost for the character designer/creator. HGS and a lot of animes/shows have made me think this thought

I'm with you on the point about jerk characters, seeing as people are like that irl. Stuff like that makes for more believably human characters (even when they're not...ESPECIALLY when they're not), thus it's easier to hate them when they do a bad, laugh at their expense when they do a dumb, yet all told...harder to hate & dismiss them completely when they do a genuine good; it makes you wanna learn more about them..."How can someone be like this if they're this nice and supportive in this moment in time to this person? What's their story?", ya know? :3
To the last point, yes. You don't want to confuse names. You risk mistakes during production, and the audience can get confused. You want word of mouth to spread, so if people who don't know about your work start having it explained to them, they'll likely lose interest if they keep conflating key information and get frustrated

Well I guess a broke clock is right twice day. As for how I would fix these episodes. For the Halloween party, Rosemary agrees to doing the list Sage had but didn't realize what was on the list. She still does them because (in my version, Rosemary realizes she's in love with) and does the things on the list. But goes to grab a snack and runs into Thyme & Parsley. She tells them the situation and talks about how boring the activities Sage chose are boring. Olive (who in my version would be a part vampire or demon) records this and gives to Sage. Rosemary & Sage have a fight and split up. Sage meets Snapdragon and stands up for him when Cal bullies Snapdragon. Olive tries to steal Rosemary's mom's weapon (which would be a Warhammer). That's when she caused the fight between the two. Later Sage apologizes for not asking what Rosemary wanted and Rosemary admits that she should have just said what she wanted to do. And so, Sage lets Rosemary pick what they should to next and the episode ends with them kissing.
The spark spell scrolls sound like the Spookie cookies Sabrina uses to cast magic for no apparent reason in the Animated Series. It never explains in that show that magic can run out like in most of the franchise and so they could be used to conserve magic, so it never makes sense.
Considering she's a cat, Olive is better suited for scouting and infiltration. I don't think she's cut out for the more active part of sabotage and combat.
Cal was voiced by ProZD. This is easily the worst role he's done. I wonder why he even accepted the role. He must've known this series was going to flop.
- Bigger question regarding Olive: what is she exactly? Are catfolk a natural thing in this world? Or is she a cat enchanted with a humanoid form, or vice-versa? - The sparks - and something in Ep10 - give me an idea for how magic could have worked. Okay, here's what I have in mind: Old Magic is practically limitless in what skills can be used, but it still requires a stamina cost depending on the magnitude of the effect; New Magic uses terraspheres to mitigate the energy cost, but only with spells that have been "coded" into them by their casters, whether by repeated Old Magic usage or by using a ritual to speed up the process; and spark spells allow seemingly no cost at all to the user or their sphere, but they do take an entropic toll on their surroundings. - Really, if Cal is the only person raising such a stink over Snapdragon's mermaid costume, then he looks like the "outcast" here, not Snap. You know, if I were rewriting this series, I'd have Snap try to diffuse the situation and get Cal to calm down, only for Amaryllis to butt in and threaten him (as she does here). Then afterward, Snap can tell her that they had things under control, and she insists that she made Cal drop it faster than Snap's pacifistic method. Considering this episode reminds us about Snap being Ryll's morality pet - something that's pretty much been ignored after Ep3 - something like this would've made that way clearer. But of course, this show LOVES being vague... - ...Actually, here's what muddies Snap's trans "arc" further: the mermaid costume was Amaryllis's idea, and Snap really only leaves to weep when Ryll wanted to watch two friends fight, NOT because of Cal. (Agreed on Sage's reaction, though. This show conflates love and lust a little too often.) - Another rewrite my brain wouldn't stop pondering is one that effectively switches up the roles of Rosemary and Sage in the argument. It feels more like Sage should be the one saying "We don't need to be heroes today. We can just be kids! Do you even REMEMBER what that's like?" So...Sage does stick with Rosemary for activities like the Flaming Axe Challenge, but notices that Rosemary is being way too competitive and forceful with all the activities - like hurling her axe so hard, it flies through the target and keeps going a fair distance. And Rose's answer to the above quote is that she can't afford to be a kid now - that she can't be soft or weak, that her near-death in the Cave of Vinca has been gnawing away at her, and her mom would be ashamed to see her goof off any more than she already has. ...At the very least, this would make a more coherent link to things like Caraway's discussion about her Everything Hours thingy, Aster's foolhardiness, her shock after drawing blood from Olive, and Ep10 Sage talking about how restless Rosemary has been. It would also make Sage look even less like a domineering asshole, of course. - "All magic can be reversed." Oh yes, golden words that make this show's trans drama all the weaker... - ...Also, are we gonna talk about how kids like Slime Boy are apparently aware of Aloe's "special cookies"? I mean, with Raye saying on podcasts that Aloe's job is weed-farming...
ngl i would love olive being the bad guys' cat at some point (or like some random stray cat that got adopted) but they experimented on her with magic so she became their assassin and got a human form. i see them doing that because cats are insane hunters in nature, let alone a very invasive one. also neppy cat would be a messed up version of that spell, showing that sage was new at this magic business.
"We got a real swear for once." I feel like I should point out that there were other various points where swear words were used prior to this episode. Amaryllis called the hedge maze "bastard" in the previous episode, and when asked about Terraspheres, Thyme said "I don't mess with that shıt." It was very quite and you'll miss it if you're not listening, though. Slimeboy is a pretty good bard, though.
The more I watch these reviews, the more I think the creators put the ideological aspect of their thinkings over a coherent worldbuilding story. It's sad, because it could've been at least decent.
I notice none of the characters seem to have belly buttons. I know that is a weird thing to point out but it was bothering me so much & I had to say something.
As a Kid I loved The Adventures of Pete & Pete, never saw Ed, Edd n Eddy and always got Autoboots and Decepticons mixed up. IDK if letters are what matters, Stanly and Stanford, Stanly and Stan Lee, Donald Duck and Daffy Duck, but general concepts do easily get mixed up. Huey, Dewey & Louie , Rob Paulsen and Ron Perlman, Garfield and Heathcliff, Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, Peter Mathews and Peter Mayhew, IDK I was always more easily mixed up over things that didn't sound similar
i think the videogame exsistign in this universe makes sense and most steampunk/dieselpunk based technology in any high fantasy medium, if it was something liek a literal PSVR that looked exactly like a PSVR then there'd be a problem
To repeat from our original comment thread, this show is better and I don’t think we can even compare it to Velma. This show isn’t offensive and there aren’t so many harmful messages and at least the protagonists aren’t trying to purposely have the audience be outraged and annoyed
better. high guardian spice was made by people who had no idea what they were doing while velma was made by people who seemed to actively hate everything about the source material
Velma is worse because it's a retelling of something that already existed and is doing it's hardest to shit all over the original. HGS while incompetent and pure garbage is at least it's own thing and sometimes tries to be decent. Velma never bothered to give a shit or try.

Amarilys is perfectly in character here. There is a reason she is the best character in the show. Rosemary vs Oliver is a good fight if we disregard how Oliver, a mage, is not using magic at any point.
The money people send to CR could have gone to the Japanese animators, but noooooo! It was send to a team of talentless Tumblrinas.. 🙄 Even the short, "Out of sight", did the fantasy thing way better than HGS. It's on youtube if any of you are interested.
Actually, it did. The money used on HGS and Onyx Equinox was supplied by Otter Media and Sumitomo Entertainment. Basically they were funded by other companies to produce the shows and didn't take money from the CR subscribers.

What in trying to say is that we needed to know about her earlier so this whole thing doesn't feel rushed (more than it already is) but having her execute her plan where she can disguise herself well is smart of her and the writers (for once)

I think I remember seeing people say that Snap's dad was technically correct in what he wanted to teach Snap; if someone is bullying you and being mean, don't sit there and take it. Stand up for yourself and fight back.

Sage’s outfit in this episode definitely would’ve been better as her main outfit, instead they just decided to make her look like an unimportant background character from Little Witch Academia.
At least the unforms that the witches wore in LWA were very unique, Sage's clothes are the most generic I've seen. Perhaps they were kept that way so it would be easier to draw/animate, but there's nothing that stands out, with the exception of her blue hair perhaps
That's the unfortunate nature of school uniforms. They definitely could've had the best of both worlds and the have the Halloween outfit as the main and the school uniform during class.

That is to say, it was the progenitor to TMM and Hime was heavily redesigned to become Ichigo. The oneshot was reprinted in the tanks too, so it's not like it's some obscure lost media of the late Mia Ikumi's portfolio

To summarize my past comment on the first upload of this video, Cal shouldn't have been shocked by Snapdragon wearing feminine clothes because him living in a world where magic allows a person to change their physical appearance should habr desensitized him to the concept of a person changing themselves outwardly, let alone simply wearing a dress, a wig, and make-up.
I think he was shocked because he found that out after hitting on Snapdragon, which he wouldn't have otherwise.
To say nothing of them being high schoolers on Halloween. I remember one of my old high schools had a cross dressing day for seniors. Ironically, it was called "costume day".

If media has taught me anything, it's that actually becoming your Halloween costume is usually a bad idea that results in everyone becoming mindless monsters.
In Buffy one Halloween had Oz I think wear simply a name tag saying “Hi, I’m God” to cover the possibility of people becoming their costumes again.

You know what I hate, the concept that were living in a man's world which makes no sense when you factor in things like race, age and religion.
Having Cal insult SD is just another example to prove men don't always have it easy compared to women.
The "fight" between Rosemary & Sage would be great if it was actually built up over time and both were trying to beat each other's a**es.
So one thing that confused me, Rosemary has killed monsters with blood splattering everywhere before, so why was she so shocked when she cut Olive?
Perhaps it's due to the fact that Olive is closer to a human? Though I think that one of the dragons from a previous episode was capable of speech, so perhaps many of the monsters that Rosemary slayed were sentient beings. Don't think the show was going to raise some moral questions like that

The two Tris made me think of Sauron and Saruman. The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest works of fiction of all time, but I still know people to this day who get those two characters mixed up because of that name choice.
In the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings adaptation, Bakshi or the producers and executives wanted to pre-emptively avoid what they think would confuse the audiences, so they had Saruman changed into "Aruman" to make him and Sauron more distinct.
Well, Tolkien is kinda infamous for it. Wait until you read the Silmarillion with all its f-ing elves 😂...
At one point in the books the heroes see orcs carrying shields with an "S" on them and try to figure out who they belong to. They eventually decide it's Saruman because Sauron wouldn't use elf runes.
@@NobodyC13 It was probably a later thing they did in movies production since I recall them pronouncing “Saruman” normally in the first half of the movie until later on in the movie where they randomly chop out the S in the beginning of his name.
You don't even have to wait for the Silmarillion. Just look at The Hobbit. How many of the 13 Dwarves have names that start or end with the same syllable? Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur. Granted, several of them were directly related somehow, so it's a LITTLE more excusable, but when these are your MAIN cast, especially in a book without many illuatrations, it can definitely be confusing.
I agree that the chibi designs in one scene look more appealing than the actual style. As one-note as Olive appears, I think she was meant to be a take on the Bakeneko, a Japanese cat demon that can take on a human form (I actually have an interest in youkai). And I'm not really a big fan of the "2 friends falling out" cliché myself, unless either party had a GOOD reason to do this.
Neko-musume from Gegege no Kitaro is a Bakeneko yōkai? Though to be fair, Olive looks more like a character from Tokyo Mew Mew
@@pablocasas5906 Neko-Musume is a half-yokai like Nezumi-Otoko, the details behind that is never really explored; while not expressly clarified, the way she derogatorily called Nezumi-Otoko a half-breed in the 80's anime would imply she is not one in that adaptation. While Shigeru Mizuki's depictions are what brought a lot of yokai folklore back into cultural relevance, this case was not the traditional depiction of them- bake-neko were previously painted as significantly more cat-like, as in they looked more like cats that did human-like things like walking only on their hind legs. wear clothes, etc. More like sapient cats than humans with vaguely cat-like features like Neko-Musume.
That being said, yes, Olive looks like they were a little too 'inspired' by Tokyo Mew Mew and she looks very out place for it; she's almost a ringer for Hime from the prototype one-shot pitch for TMM, Tokyo Black Cat Girl.
I know Olive has a generic design, but I think she is adorable. Having a basic generic design can work sometimes depending on how it evolves overtime.

The show had little opportunity to develop Olive, or indeed the Triumvirate. It’s only a third into a twelve episode run the protagonists begin interacting with the antagonists directly and even then it’s through a proxy in Olive. Imagine if more time was spent on the overarching plot rather than what the earlier episodes were about.

You know, you bring up a good point about "For all Rosemary knows, she could have just as easily screwed everyone over" by breaking the thing that turned everyone in to stone: that actually would have been a lot more interesting if that DID happen, since it'd allow room for real character growth and further development, the heroes hoping that the antagonist has some way to reverse the damage done even though it's been made clear by the lore that the only way to reverse the damage was destroyed, thus increasing the tension and giving us some real believable conflict and stakes...as in, if they can't find a way to fix the damage, everyone will be stuck as statues forever; plus, it'd play in to the whole Guardian aspect of the show as defined by its own lore, and we can have more adventure in this high fantasy world. I hesitate to say this should have been the first episode, maybe a second or third episode once the characters and world are established, but had we condensed everything down and cut right to the bullshit instead of just being another generic "Everyone go to Magic School to learn how to Magical Girl, plz, k thx bai" type of anime, maybe this series could have been better; I mean, heck, Soul Eater basically did this but better...mostly...

That would be great, have the first part end with them breaking the thing, and now in part two they need to fight the catgirl not just for revenge, but since she cast the spell she's now the only one who can reverse it. It also adds another aspect to the fight scenes as the catgirl just wants to run away but the guardians need to keep her here. But, as has been said plenty of times, that would require actual thinking and writing.

What's stopping some power hungry mother fucker from Creating like an Entire Massive Floating Continent, Putting Spells in place to prevent it from falling (Or Alternatively, just create this in the Sea and skip this step.) and creating ENTIRELY NEW SAPIENT SPECIES to worship and serve him like a God? Create entirely new Biomes that are impossible without magic (Deserts where Giant Magic Crystals grow, an Ocean that floats in the Air, etc.) and eventually attempt to conquer the world?
Like REALLY think about the 'No Limitations or Costs.' Thing, this implies you could create entire Universes or Star Systems and just take over entire planets with this.
That Barren Planet over there? Boom, habitable with Atmosphere and is now full of Gargoyles (Like from the Disney Show with Keith David.) and Goblins.

There's a graphic novel series called the Lumberjanes. It has similarities with it being fantasy and having somewhat similar characters archetypes with the main cast. But how it goes about telling their stories and handling the characters and tone, I feel like it’s what high guardian spice should've tried to aim for. If you have time check it out, I highly recommend it. There was going to be an animated series based off it picked up by Max but it was announced in 2020 and I wouldn't be surprised if it was quietly canceled during their purge.
Calamity Zaslav might have even written it off, as he is want to do (Which he had to stop doing as much because friggin' US Senators started paying attention and going "Hol' up, that sounds similar to insurance fraud.".).
@ShadowWolfRising With Disney Channel shooting themselves in the foot with last year and a half(first owl house and now ghost and Molly mcgee), they should consider picking up this series. The company needs another Renaissance.

Something that bothered me was Rosemary's Halloween costume. I've seen that kind of outfit in anime quite often; and it's always as pajamas (typically little girl pajamas). It really takes me out of the fight scene. It looks too silly for me to take the stakes seriously.
I think Rosemary's Halloween costume is one of those full-body pijamas that have became popular in the last 10 or so years, I've seen them in different stores in recent times, they come in kid and adult size, I supposse they're a sort of a novelty, I've seen some models based on unicorns and even Pokémon like Pikachu and Eevee.
But the fact that Rosemary wears one kind of drives me mad for some reason, since it's a piece of modern clothing, but the series has a sort of medieval fantasy setting, or at least it seems to be at times, because in this episode Snapdragon and Amaryllis use Virtual Reality goggles, and then we have Anise and her punk-style look, not to mention she's married to Aloe and nobody seems to mind. It feels like the writers couldn't decide the setting of the show

While I agree with the name thing, I'd argue that Ed, Edd n Eddy managed to be an exception that worked. I mean, "Edd" is Double D, but at least Eddy has an extra syllable. Then again, I still get Ed and Eddy mixed up from time to time, so what do I know?
What helps me separate Ed from Edd is that "Ed" is occasionally referred to as Big Ed. So we have "Big Ed", "Double D", and "Eddy".

So, the three evil masterminds behind evil are man, the three managers of the school are woman. It's a shame because if they were smart and the show wasn't canceled they could made such a twist on expectations. They had all the pieces.
Imagine if it WAS the academy the ones doing evil, that "New magic" was the thing draining the world, that wasn't without a cost, unlimited. It had limits, they just tried to make it like that to make their students use it more to progress the plan and turn them dependant on it. Just a lie fomented by the highers up at the academy but how this three nice woman could do such wrong? Then the evil ones, know the truth and they are trying to stop this but they are painted like the bad ones on their acts of sabotage.
Imagine the cat girl being just impulsive, doing wrong not because she is moraly in the bad side just to redeem and join the heroine party but just because she is desesperate. The heroines helping the bad side thinking it was the good one.
I mean... The school sure likes to put it's students in extreme dangers, have sadistic teachers and such a high level of incompetence. What if that wasn't just because the writers are incompetent but because they REALLY are evil. Imagine if that WAS the case how good of a twist it would be.
But we know that's just not the case. An agenda was more important to push than good writing.
Eh, everyone knew FROM THE BEGINNING this show was being made by a room full of femnazis (whites ones to boot) with more ego than sense...

The thing we're watching seems really disconnected, and kept up by some "agenda" terms and ideologies that hardly have to do with the worldbuilding and themes of HGS.
Glad you said that thing that them being nice to Snap when they're experimenting isn’t the same as being supportive. Like, I think the way the main girls are portrayed come across as writing you'd see with a movie that has a click of trendy mean girls...
Like no matter what, Snapdragon is going to have a "before" and "after" where some kind of change happens, doesn't really matter what the specifics entail. But here we see the girls and Snap at the beginning hate each other, or at least the girls hate Snap and Amaryllis. Then they start being friendly with Snap. It's not as if Sage or Rose got the wrong impression and learned more about Snap. It comes across as if the plot was Snap was overweight, and through the series they were losing said weight, and only then the girls start being nice to them. Oh, but only the "after" picture! Meanwhile Amaryllis comes across as liking Snapdragon as a friend and companion no matter what stage of their life they're in. It reminds me of a few odd cases of young mean kid in the fellow queer community that would just be mean and cynical of a person until the moment where they find out they're queer, then they do a face turn and go "this person can do no wrong" and be all nice, no matter if x person still has a bad attitude or not. I was excited to see in this queer world a character can still be a character and just happens to be a bully or rival. Since everyone is queer it obviously isn’t a strawman thing. But very soon it'll be obvious that the writers are stripping Snap’s traits away and forcing them to settle into a character who's just another friend members because...?
It feels very gross. Not that Snap and Amaryllis should be bully villainous, but just imagine if they stuck to that level of rivalry that can challenge the main two! Now they'll just go on unrivaled, correct in everything, not allowed to grow or have an opportunity to show their heroic causes by rising up and defending their choices to those who are challenging their ideals.

Like, what? Not to assume a fictional 2nd season scenario, but this makes me worried for Snap on a real level because it seems like these two would totally isolate and force them to break apart their life long relationship with Amaryllis.
Clearly someone on the animation team knew how to make an action sequence... Why didn't they lean into the action more!?

It is so messed up that a man dressing up as a woman is viewed as wrong and yet most woman indirectly crossdress every time they wear high heels because high heels were originally meant for men.

A woman dressing as a man was 'indecent' but a man dressing as a woman was supposedly 'humiliating' and a man who willingly dresses as a woman with little incentive was perceived as him not being in his right mind. At least 60+ years ago.
It's messed up when some people think a man who likes dressing as a woman makes him automatically trans instead of, you know, someone with a quirk.
Honestly, the only "good" reason to have two characters or companies named so similarly in a story is when mixing them up is the whole point, and even then there are better ways to do that.
Knowing how hated this show is, I wouldn't be surprised how overlooked some of the better aspects of it are.

You think if they just went with a chibi style for the art, they could have hired better writers? Like I said in the comments in previous videos, the creator blames the show sucking on not being able to hire better writers. I still find that hilarious considering this was the same person who bragged about the writers being "a diverse group of females."
Also, does anyone else get the feeling that maybe these episodes were written with the intention to showing up earlier in the series? That would explain a few issues with the writing, and I'd believe it with how horrible this series is.

Sometimes I look at a character and I think: ‘this character’s design wasn’t made to convey who the character is visually, it was made specifically for someone to cosplay as’ which is basically free advertising for the show/game and an ego boost for the character designer/creator. HGS and a lot of animes/shows have made me think this thought

I'm with you on the point about jerk characters, seeing as people are like that irl. Stuff like that makes for more believably human characters (even when they're not...ESPECIALLY when they're not), thus it's easier to hate them when they do a bad, laugh at their expense when they do a dumb, yet all told...harder to hate & dismiss them completely when they do a genuine good; it makes you wanna learn more about them..."How can someone be like this if they're this nice and supportive in this moment in time to this person? What's their story?", ya know? :3
To the last point, yes. You don't want to confuse names. You risk mistakes during production, and the audience can get confused. You want word of mouth to spread, so if people who don't know about your work start having it explained to them, they'll likely lose interest if they keep conflating key information and get frustrated

As for how I would fix these episodes. For the Halloween party, Rosemary agrees to doing the list Sage had but didn't realize what was on the list. She still does them because (in my version, Rosemary realizes she's in love with) and does the things on the list. But goes to grab a snack and runs into Thyme & Parsley.
She tells them the situation and talks about how boring the activities Sage chose are boring. Olive (who in my version would be a part vampire or demon) records this and gives to Sage. Rosemary & Sage have a fight and split up. Sage meets Snapdragon and stands up for him when Cal bullies Snapdragon.
Olive tries to steal Rosemary's mom's weapon (which would be a Warhammer). That's when she caused the fight between the two. Later Sage apologizes for not asking what Rosemary wanted and Rosemary admits that she should have just said what she wanted to do. And so, Sage lets Rosemary pick what they should to next and the episode ends with them kissing.
The spark spell scrolls sound like the Spookie cookies Sabrina uses to cast magic for no apparent reason in the Animated Series. It never explains in that show that magic can run out like in most of the franchise and so they could be used to conserve magic, so it never makes sense.

Considering she's a cat, Olive is better suited for scouting and infiltration. I don't think she's cut out for the more active part of sabotage and combat.

Cal was voiced by ProZD. This is easily the worst role he's done. I wonder why he even accepted the role. He must've known this series was going to flop.
A VA takes whatever role he can get. Keep in mind, Mike Pollock was willing to star in a direct-to-video ripoff of Ratatouille.
It's strange that High Guardian Spice and The Owl House have so many in Common but in the End The Owl House is in every Way better.
And LWA is better than both of them combine. I still love the Owl House though

Even a broken show gets something right... sometimes.
- Bigger question regarding Olive: what is she exactly? Are catfolk a natural thing in this world? Or is she a cat enchanted with a humanoid form, or vice-versa?
- The sparks - and something in Ep10 - give me an idea for how magic could have worked. Okay, here's what I have in mind: Old Magic is practically limitless in what skills can be used, but it still requires a stamina cost depending on the magnitude of the effect; New Magic uses terraspheres to mitigate the energy cost, but only with spells that have been "coded" into them by their casters, whether by repeated Old Magic usage or by using a ritual to speed up the process; and spark spells allow seemingly no cost at all to the user or their sphere, but they do take an entropic toll on their surroundings.
- Really, if Cal is the only person raising such a stink over Snapdragon's mermaid costume, then he looks like the "outcast" here, not Snap. You know, if I were rewriting this series, I'd have Snap try to diffuse the situation and get Cal to calm down, only for Amaryllis to butt in and threaten him (as she does here). Then afterward, Snap can tell her that they had things under control, and she insists that she made Cal drop it faster than Snap's pacifistic method. Considering this episode reminds us about Snap being Ryll's morality pet - something that's pretty much been ignored after Ep3 - something like this would've made that way clearer. But of course, this show LOVES being vague...
- ...Actually, here's what muddies Snap's trans "arc" further: the mermaid costume was Amaryllis's idea, and Snap really only leaves to weep when Ryll wanted to watch two friends fight, NOT because of Cal.
(Agreed on Sage's reaction, though. This show conflates love and lust a little too often.)
- Another rewrite my brain wouldn't stop pondering is one that effectively switches up the roles of Rosemary and Sage in the argument. It feels more like Sage should be the one saying "We don't need to be heroes today. We can just be kids! Do you even REMEMBER what that's like?" So...Sage does stick with Rosemary for activities like the Flaming Axe Challenge, but notices that Rosemary is being way too competitive and forceful with all the activities - like hurling her axe so hard, it flies through the target and keeps going a fair distance. And Rose's answer to the above quote is that she can't afford to be a kid now - that she can't be soft or weak, that her near-death in the Cave of Vinca has been gnawing away at her, and her mom would be ashamed to see her goof off any more than she already has.
...At the very least, this would make a more coherent link to things like Caraway's discussion about her Everything Hours thingy, Aster's foolhardiness, her shock after drawing blood from Olive, and Ep10 Sage talking about how restless Rosemary has been. It would also make Sage look even less like a domineering asshole, of course.
- "All magic can be reversed." Oh yes, golden words that make this show's trans drama all the weaker...
- ...Also, are we gonna talk about how kids like Slime Boy are apparently aware of Aloe's "special cookies"? I mean, with Raye saying on podcasts that Aloe's job is weed-farming...
ngl i would love olive being the bad guys' cat at some point (or like some random stray cat that got adopted) but they experimented on her with magic so she became their assassin and got a human form. i see them doing that because cats are insane hunters in nature, let alone a very invasive one.
also neppy cat would be a messed up version of that spell, showing that sage was new at this magic business.

I feel like I should point out that there were other various points where swear words were used prior to this episode. Amaryllis called the hedge maze "bastard" in the previous episode, and when asked about Terraspheres, Thyme said "I don't mess with that shıt." It was very quite and you'll miss it if you're not listening, though.
Slimeboy is a pretty good bard, though.

As a Kid I loved The Adventures of Pete & Pete, never saw Ed, Edd n Eddy and always got Autoboots and Decepticons mixed up.
IDK if letters are what matters, Stanly and Stanford, Stanly and Stan Lee, Donald Duck and Daffy Duck, but general concepts do easily get mixed up. Huey, Dewey & Louie , Rob Paulsen and Ron Perlman, Garfield and Heathcliff, Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, Peter Mathews and Peter Mayhew, IDK I was always more easily mixed up over things that didn't sound similar
i think the videogame exsistign in this universe makes sense and most steampunk/dieselpunk based technology in any high fantasy medium, if it was something liek a literal PSVR that looked exactly like a PSVR then there'd be a problem

To repeat from our original comment thread, this show is better and I don’t think we can even compare it to Velma. This show isn’t offensive and there aren’t so many harmful messages and at least the protagonists aren’t trying to purposely have the audience be outraged and annoyed
better. high guardian spice was made by people who had no idea what they were doing while velma was made by people who seemed to actively hate everything about the source material
Velma is worse because it's a retelling of something that already existed and is doing it's hardest to shit all over the original. HGS while incompetent and pure garbage is at least it's own thing and sometimes tries to be decent. Velma never bothered to give a shit or try.

Actually, it did. The money used on HGS and Onyx Equinox was supplied by Otter Media and Sumitomo Entertainment. Basically they were funded by other companies to produce the shows and didn't take money from the CR subscribers.
