It's funny that you bring up the "this is okay in a dungeons and dragons game but not in a cartoon" because another reviewer I've seen who tore into HGS said "This whole useless section (The montage of traveling and in the city) feels like a DnD campaign where the GM is DESPERATELY throwing out plot hooks in an attempt to get the players to stop faffing about and get to an actual story."

This could have been an emotional scene, because the picture of the cheesecake IS of her and her mother eating it.
It could have been a character moment of Rosemary trying to avoid talking about her missing mother by placing emphasis on the unimportant part, but eventually reveal the emotional ties. She could even have moments where she refuses to eat cheesecake because that was the last thing she ate with her mother and it brings her painful memories, for example.
There is just SO MUCH that can be done with what they have set up, the problem is that the creator and writhers have no idea what they're doing.

Stuff like the cheesecake and necklace lines sound like they wanted to throw something "funny" in every two seconds instead of wanting to actually write dialogue that made sense.

Someone else mentioned this but _never put portals/teleportation into your magic system without giving them limitations_ because portals _immediately_ ruin any reason for characters to use any form of transportation, or even stairs. Like Harry Potter has Apparition, and the reason they don’t use it all the time is because you could potentially tear off your limbs.

    • @NobodyC13
      @NobodyC13 7 місяців тому +55

Yeah, I once came across a stupid comment that claimed Harry Potter had bad worldbuilding because students ride the train to Hogearts when Apparation exists. I deconstructed that comment quickly in pointing out all forms of transportation in Harry Potter has its pros and cons. Apparation is quick and convenient to get to destinations, however, it's also incredibly uncomfortable, has the potential to go seriously wrong like splinching, and children require an adult just to get anywhere (and most don't have the constitution to tolerate it until they're 16, which raises the metaphor that it's the equivalent of Wizarding Driver's Ed). Plus Hogwarts has the anti-apparation field on the grounds as a security measure. Broom are like the equivalent to bicycles in that they could be used to travel short distances and cannot be interfered by the Ministry, however, flying in muggle spaces runs the risk of exposure and unless you know how to do the Undetectable Extension Charm, you're out of luck in carrying your luggage and cargo. The Floo Network works similarly to a phone network and Metro/Subway system, however, like Apparation, it has the potential to go wrong as Harry demonstrated in the 2nd book when he got lost and wound up in Knockturn Alley because he didn't speak his destination clearly (and the destination must be on the network and runs the risk of being interfered and monitored by the Ministry). The Knight Bus is used by stranded witches and wizards (either they're in the middle of nowhere, no broom, no Floo network, and can't apparate) but the ride is wild and intense. Portkeys are linear and require knowing what it is. Even Hogwarts Legacy opened with the New Student riding a flying carriage only to be intercepted by a dragon, and if they weren't being chaperoned by a Professor who could apparate, the game would've ended where it began with them as a red splatter from falling out of the sky.
With the Hogwarts Express train, it's accessible to students of all ages and backgrounds (magic or muggle-born). Students can acclimate comfortably on the way to school while their parents know exactly where they are safely. And the train can carry students' luggage and cargo.

This episode would have been A LOT better if, instead of a travel montage, it was about Rosemary and Sage struggling to get to the school. Maybe they struggle with reading maps since they never needed to learn before, so that's why they're taking public transportation since they don't know how to get to the school on their own, but something happens along the way that drags out their trip in a comedic fashion. Maybe Rosemary loses her locket to an animal, and she spends the whole trip trying to get it back . Along the way, the girls meet Parsley and Thyme, and they all band together to get the locket back.
At the very least, it would provide a simple conflict so that there is SOMETHING interesting going on that also allows the writers to show off their main characters and how they handle a situation while bonding along the way. It would have some character chemistry.

Here's how (in my view) the first episode could have been better:
    - We start at Peeble with an younger Rose (around 6 or 7 years old) and her simple life, showing her relationships with her father, brother, Sage, the city folks and her mother. We will have the "Ordinary World" in the "Hero's Journey" Method and we get to know the importance of certain characters in Rose's life, we are also presented to Peeble in a better way.
    - Since this show wants to draw attention to Rose's mom, we could see how her mom treats with Rose and how the whole guardian things work (maybe they can play a special board game that Rose's mother keeps over-exagerating the game to give it more emotion for her child, using her own adventures to add detail to the story [of course, she doesn't fully tell those stories due to a heavy presence of death and unless you want to have a little bloolust kid or someone without any empathy, you shouldn't tell a child gorey stuff])
-- We are presented in the show (by details given by Rose's mom) that Guardians are specialized soldiers that either work as knights for the villages or go on hunts to collect items for studies of medicine, monstorlogy ( monsters and their weakness), etc. - To resume it: Royal Knights/bounty hunters.
    - We are shown the events that will scar Rose and motivate her, maybe it could be that when she was a kid, during a fair with her family, an invasion of monsters happens and she sees carnage and chaos happening around her and so, she gets lost in Peeble, running for her life, only to find her mother fighting part of the monster hoard. The two would have the mission to get Rose back to safety so she doesn't have to see more carnage, but it is hard as it is almost impossible finding a street without a monster. They ended up cornored and so, in a nearby tarvern, Lavander (i think that's Rose's mom's name) manages to find a safe spot in there and asks her child noit to leave it at any cost. with fear running in her veins, Rose obeys her and so, we are taken to her perspective, as we only hear loud screams of agony from random citizens , monsters roar and an almost unhearable sword slashing flesh. After everything calms down, Rose's dad finds her, as he hugs her, believing she was gone like most citizens from Peeble. We see the huge parts of the village destroyed, covered in human and monster blood. Rose finds Sage who was out of Peeble with her mother to buy some herbs for her mother's tea company, calming Rose down as she sees her best friend alive and well...only then to her to find a sword....Lavander's sword... Rose grabs it and she screams for her mother, only to get no response from her. Rose cries out her fear on the blade of the sword, while Sage tries to calm her friend, even if she doesn't know the full story. It is left clear nobody knows what happened to Lavander, if she has died or not.... (Her mystery would be treated in the same way like Milton's mystery from "What Remains of Edith Finch", where sure, it is important, but it isn't the main focus of the story, but it is necessary to explore this event when needed)
    - In the more modern times, we see a 14 year old Rose putting flowers on her mother's old training room alongside a picture of Lavander hugging her daughter. We see Rose prepared for something and so, she is called by someone in the living room. It is Sage who is awaiting her friend to get ready so they can go to the "The Royal Services Academy" (sorry, couldn't think of a better name). Both want to go there different reasons - Sage wants to follow her own path, wanting to do more than serve tea alongside her mom, wanting to be a mage of epic proportions and also to become a sidekick for Rose, meanwhile Rose is motivated by her mother, wanting to become a protector of those who can't fight and only give that up when she dies.
    - We would see the girls being like...how can i say.... Cuphead and Mugman - Rose would be an immature kid who thinks she knows what she is doing and ends up creating more problems or worsing them up, altought she has a good heart and would go out of her ways to protect the ones who she loves, while Sage would be the cowardly yet smart gal, the one who seems like the opposite to Rose, altough she also wants to protect the ones she loves. I think Cuphead and Mugman managed to master the idea of a duo that are different from each other in "The Cuphead Show" due to their personalities and how one bounces one of each other. In the case of Rose and Sage, they can have different views and different ways they react to other people (Maybe Sage could be more cunning and Rose doesn't really like to manipulate people or how Rose is whilling to sacrifice everything to the extreme just to avoid people from falling into the same fate her mother did)
    - In my view, i think the best constrast is how their friendship, altough good, harms each other, but not really being toxic - Due to losing her mother, we would see Rose trying to avoid seeing herself as weak, but they will eventually will slip up from her control and Sage is trying to control her - the problem is that it creates on Sage a sense of opposite dependence, where she thinks she needs to always help Rose, but in reality, it makes Rose get no true freedom from Sage, there for, it causes a bigger problem, as Rose thinks it is Sage who needs help and so, she acts even more ruthless and cause more of her loss of her mother to apper, almost creating a never ending cycle.
When it comes to the plot, i think the episode should be the girls interacting with their new interactions, as the episode would focus more on that than they reaching the town itself. They could see how new magic is used (like using energy inside a piece of coal itself to create fire to cook a steak), what are they going to experience and even the dangers of the town (such as robbers).
sorry for the long text people... i just wanted to share my view on this episode

I think that Raye and the rest of the staff wanted to make a fantasy show inspired in part by the anime that Raye used to watch when he was young, like Magic Knight Rayearth, people say that the HGS copied most of its ideas from Little Witch Academia, but in Raye's defense he pitched HGS to some networks back in 2013 when LWA just premiered its first OVA, so the similarities are just coincidental, besides, the concept of a magic academy is pretty old
The main issue is that the show's staff didn't make a good job at creating an interesting premise, with likeable characters, it feels like the series just tries to checks boxes of the most popular clichés from popular cartoon and anime, making direct references to popular series and imitating superficial aspects from better written shows like Steven Universe

I'm going to give Raye Rodríguez and his team some slack, I don't think HGS is a LWA rip-off, since technically Raye pitched the idea of HGS to some networks in 2013, the same year the first LWA OVA premiered. Though Rosemary's earlier designs looked very similar to Madoka Kaname
In some interviews Raye said he used to watch anime like Magic Knight Rayearth when he was younger, I think I can see some similarities between Rosemary and Hikaru. Still, the show fails very horribly at trying to imitate anime shows, that's something that I think very few Western animators can't seem to get right

Interesting point too on that worldbuilding point about accessibility; one of my favourite parts of Zootopia was actually the attention to this. They built a society with a ton of vastly different species all held to a roughly equal social status (with rhe inequality intentionally highlighted as a plot point) by taking on things like these size differences headfirst. Multiple public transport options are seen, doorways tend to be very big to accomodate just about everyone, entire biomes ideal to certain species are built around their comfort. Times where for example, Judy is too short for something, is intentional to communicate a societal issue of stereotyping, like all the police training desks being built for the assumedly big and strong species and nearly unusable by her as a rabbit. And one thing I hope to see more with fictional societies with bigger physical differences in their members, is more acknowledgment of disabikity and drawing from exactly what various disabled communities have said is a needed accomodation to allow them equality. The real world literally has people who need different infrastructure to what we see commonly irl to access public areas better, draw from it! Even little acknowledgements of differences I see irl like signs warning tall people to mind their heads would be a welcome addition in a building built for a fantasy dwarf, or visible step stools available for shorter people in spaces designed for giants, even imperfect accomodations like this make for better worldbuilding. It helps a world feel as real as remembering to design an animated house to have windows because real houses have windows.
And not to go on too long, but im personally really interested in seeing what fantasy worlds define their idea of disability as too! An example of media I've consumed that seems to establish this in universe (but unfortunately doesn't explore it much) is My Hero Academia. The lead character is a regular kid, but by his universe's 80% superpowered society, has a disability that about 1 in 5 people have, that does impact his quality of life, especially for his career prospects. Idk I just want to see more of it.

    • @ag2023en

That is an interesting example of world-building.
Cars 1 has a similar idea, although much more fictional, obviously.
Since the characters are, well, cars, the world is built to be usable by cars. Buttons to activate things are placed on the ground, tools are gripped onto the cars, whell lockers are used as a stand-in for handcuffs, the characters drink OIL which is fitting because most vehicles in the real world use oil (outside of electric ones, obviously).
Another fictional example would be My Little Pony, which also has to have it's world be adapted to be usable by 4 legged animals who obviously lack hands.

Both the lines about the cheesecake and the locket being a cheap necklace could have been solved with characterization.
If Rosemary was doing everything she could to hide vulnerability or sadness, even to the point of her best friend not knowing the extent, those lines could have retroactively worked.
Oh, it's not because it's a picture of my family, it's because I just love cheesecake. It's just a cheap necklace because it's the picture that matters. I say weird things because I'm both naturally upbeat but also hiding something more beneath the surface.
Cliches don't necessarily mean bad writing, it's the implementation that matters. Being a happy person doesn't have to be a front. It could be natural, but even happy people have baggage, and might be inclined to suppress it for the benefit of others and to the detriment of themselves, the degree of which is determined by their personality. It's a believable and relatable struggle. Beyond that, she might not be wise enough to even realize that part of herself, allowing for character growth.
Full disclosure, I haven't watched the show, myself, so maybe they do attempt that kind of thing later, but even if they do, I don't have high hopes for the execution.

I think it would have been cute if since the girls were poor their parents initially try to get them tickets for the train which would have taken them directly to the academy without any stops & is the main mode of transportation for most of the students. Aside from Snapdragon and Amyelia's who could have a carriage they arrive in instead due to being upper-class & the carriages would cost more to ride. It could be rosemary's suggestion that Sage and Her use sage's broom to fly to the school. Sage being the more cautious one would be hesitant to agree with her idea due to 1. not being a very skilled flyer & the 2. the broom being older and belonging to both her mother & grandmother previously. Rosemary could then ask Sage how they should get to school, if they can't board the train & they can't use her broom. Then you could have a short montage ( about a minute maybe less ) of the girls sneaking onto different modes of transportation to get to the school. Then you could have a small joke about the girls looking messy by the time they arrive at the school.

Would have been a LOT funnier if this show had the audience ASSUME the locket had something important, and one BRIEF chase scene later, she got the locket back and THEN revealed it contains a picture of cake. HA! And then, later, she reveals the locket ACTUALLY contained a photograph of someone important to her she doesn't want the world to know is important to her, like a Dark Lord Of Evil who used to be her mother/aunt/whatever and hadn't gone bad yet.
"This episode tells us nothing"? It tells us this show is going to be bad.

This show has a lot of elements for the sake of having them.
"The outside world is big" is a classic trope, which is why it's in the show, but that's it. The writers pasted it in without any set up. Same with the fantastic traveling vehicles. Pasted in because other franchise did it.
Here is a game for you all.
Make a check list of all tropes and elements you recognized from shows/books/movies and think about how much nothing it doesn't in High Guardian, how it's just a pasted in trope.
This show is just tropes without any substance

The thing is that a big fantasy world is easy to make work. Especially in the anime style. Take Kuma Kuma Kuma bear, the big world is implied but not stated until needed. And it's an isekai, so this is how it's used. The main character who is isekaid into this world, from our world. They expect everything to be like a western fantasy since that's what they were introduced to. Then they travel, realizing how big this world is. They travel outside of the kingdom they're in, because they are from Japan, and want to be around a more Japanese leaning culture, from homesickness. Not only do they learn this exists in this world, but they also proceed to travel there, and spend time there. It makes sense.

I have mentally re-written this episode (and many others) in my head under the new title of "The Tales of Culinarie" (like in culinary arts aka cooking).
*The premise is that in the Kingdom of Culinarie, a black plague substance known as "The Rot" has been spreading all across the land & seas.
Rotting, corrupting, & killing everything in its path cause many to get sick, starve, or even die for the lack of fresh food.
So the survivors quickly form a boot camp campaign to train people into becoming cheknights (chefs+knights) that use cooking utensils & fresh ingredients to fight of The Rot before it spreads any further or get worse.
The four main characters are Paprika/Rika (replacement for Rosemary), Mint (replacement for Sage), Cinnamon (replacement for Parsley), and Ginger (replacement for Thyme).
Rika is an optimistic good-getter sousercess (sous chef + sorceress) who joins the Cheknights to protect her family's bakery from having to going out of business (and from having to use AI aka artificial ingredients) & find her lost brother, Fennel, who disappeared years ago trying to fight The Rot. Her weapon of choice a magic spoon wand.
Mint is Rika's long-time friend & neighbor, who becomes a cleeviteer (cleever knife + muskateer), despite being all mousey & uncertain of herself, she's actually very handy with her weapons of choice: Knife swords.
Cinnamon is the only boy of the main four, but he treats his female friends with respect & is willing to fight beside them. He's also a wild hobbit hybrid with keen senses of smell & sound, making him a great tracker & navigator. His weapons of choice are skewer javelins.
Ginger is an elf with a bipolar image. By that I mean that she may look all skinny & weak, but she's actually the physically strongest of the lead characters, yet still have a sweet demeanor. Her weapon of choice is a meat tenderizering war hammer.

The actual spice related names and the more food related themes in the revision as opposed to the generic medieval fantasy setting made this a lot more bearable.

    • @keshiaanders6452
      @keshiaanders6452 7 місяців тому +1

      @@GravityFaiz Thank you.
I also changed the school setting to a more boot/military camp with a mix of cooking lessons. Kind of like the Fry Cook Games from "Spongebob Squarepants" or any of the food themed martial arts from "Ranma 1/2."
And instead of naming the characters after herbs & flowers (that quite frankly don't suit any of the characters' designs) each set of characters follows a theme.
*The core characters are named after spices.
*The military authorities (replacing the teachers/professors/principal/headmaster) are named after teas. Like Earl Gray, Boba, Chai, Ginseng, and Herbal.
*Any wild life and/or plants the characters come across are named after the animals/plants combined with foods they are mixed with (kind of like the Foodimals from "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" ).
Lastly, instead of the mother character that has gone missing & later turns out to be a traitor working for the enemy; it's main character's brother that was said to have disappeared years ago, and he actually helps his sister & friends in the shadows along the journey/mission to destroy The Rot.

If the scripts and plot went through a few revisions and the voice actors had better direction, I don't think it'd be a masterpiece, but I do think it would ultimately be a servicable show starring cute witches named after herbs. As it stands, we have a show where even the most minor of problems with the writing snowball into something bigger thanks to the literal first draft-tier writing.
