Reasons Why Good Employees QUIT

- Reasons why good employees quit tend to be closely related to bad managers and a poor company culture. In this video I discuss 5 reasons why good employees leave, quitting their employers and companies. Good employees leave bad managers, a poor company culture and work environment. But there is more to why employees are quitting.
Whether companies like hearing this or not, but good employees tend to be much more inclined to leave rather than poor performers. Because those would typically stay and won’t bother going through the effort of leaving. 75% of 10.000 workers questioned, which voluntarily left their jobs, left because of their bosses and not because of the position itself. Employees don’t leave companies, they leave bad managers and I’ve repeated this consistently in my videos, because this is a number one motivator that gets people to look for other opportunities.
It’s a well proven fact that the happiness of the employee directly impacts on employee’s productivity. What are common reasons making good employees unhappy? Unhappy to the point of leaving the company. After years of experience in corporate HR, there would be frequent reasons why good employees quit and find out what companies must do to make their good employees stay.

Have you ever quit your job? Let me know what has been your experience in quitting managers, jobs and companies.
It is awful that you had to go through all that, at the same time it has made you grow a lot and redirect your energy into something positive and good. Thank you for sharing your story!
Yes it was a sinking ship & the owner treated us like garbage. Everyone especially key people were leaving one by one.
Today is my last day at my current job. One of the big reasons I’m leaving is the lack of positive feedback in the workplace.
@@ReceptiveKing93 When multiple people are leaving that's never a good sign.
@@janpettigrewwilde3462 Recognition is so important to feel good about your work, you've done the right thing. Let me know how is the new job, good luck!
Toxic managers think they know whats best for the employees, but whats really best is to stay as far away from them as possible and surround yourself with a company that cares and appreciates you and your efforts.
Hard fact any company's dont care about you
At least your managers think mine is incompetent 😂
Bad managers and their minions are the big reason I retired.
so true, glad you dont have to deal with that anymore
INDEED! I left a toxic work environment. The manager/owner had his minions, and minions are suck-asses and are credit stealers. Taking credit for work they had nothing to do with. They are the ones making more than the rest by stealing credit for good work done, and bad mouthing other employees. According to last evaluation, it was sub-par, because I didn't pull my weight or helped out. I quit, I went to work for another company who I didn't know at the time was looking for me. Needless to say, I am happy working with this other company who appreciated my work and contributions. Last I heard the last company I left has an employee retention problems, and heard through the grape vine I am doing excellent.
@@emmsummer7811 I truly don't....retiring was the best decision. I don't miss work at all. There is more to life than just a paycheck.
My last managers drove me to suicidal ideation. And were promoted for doing so.
I walked out the door and they didn’t even ask “why are you leaving?”
That shows how much they cared.
that's horrible
I am at the point that if I don’t scream at my boss he will not provide me with what I need to do my job. I am tired of going into work everyday to argue. I’ve got interviews set up this week.
@@lakecountynaturalist7617 I’m happy you’re getting out of your toxic environment; hope all goes well for you.
Same,i understand you.
I never had su!cid@l thoughts since the last summer breakdown, but after having applied to the job position of my dreams and after a lot of months of patience towards my extremely toxic bosses then they bringed in my mind those thoughts again
It's mainly because where I'm at,there aren't a lot of work positions that accept workers so i have either to stay at my toxic job or d!e of hungriness (NEITHER OF MY PARENTS WORK)so I can't leave my toxic job,who is gonna provide living then?
I just handed mine in... No backup plan..😂
Also drove me to suicidal ideation, so if they ask, I'm gonna say I'm after part time work, and I know this organisation doesn't offer it, only under certain circumstances.
Im so tired of shit managers im now working for myself. I will never have a boss again.
Good employees don't leave their jobs, they leave managers and leaders who don't appreciate them( Management and leaders make and build culture)
that's the truth, bad leadership takes over all the positive aspects very quickly
That’s right.
The most bad manager is who creates and promotes stress amongst the team members for his/her sake.
Yep, overworked, underpaid, underappreciated. I've decided I'm gonna look elsewhere.
Over worked and underpaid is a perspective thing. As a employer I have heard this many times with no justification
@@montanausa329 I bet you have employee retention problems.
Another thing I hate is when bosses give vague instructions then blame you if anything goes wrong. I wonder if they do that on purpose so they can use you as a scapegoat.
Yes and when you do ask questions they act as though “you should already know the answers” and make a face like this: 🙄. Bad leaders
@@smoothiecutie2277 And they expect you to be 10 steps ahead of them by saying "You should have thought of that already".
@@Uksoapfan You’re right And if you DARE ask a question they have the 🙄 expression on their face as if to say “you should already KNOW the answer”
The only worse thing than a bad manager is Cronies who try to turn the manager against you...,
Precisely.
Agreed
Just endured both. I'm more angry about the croney than the bully. At least the bully had a spine.
True, the are called "Suck-asses"
this was a good video!
I agree about the workload, I left a job because it the hours were insane and overwhelming. As you well described "suffocating"
That is a shortcut to a burnout, not sustainable for your health. Thanks for your feedback!
Work is a day-to-day contract. Don't take it seriously. Take the better offer when it arrives.
This video is incredibly well timed! I'm currently working with HR to address a employee satisfaction problem at my company and this is highly informative.
It is great that you are working on it. Have you done any anonymous surveys?Sometimes the reasons are not going to be very openly exposed, but you will see a pattern.
@@myemmotion Got some confidential interviews and the patterns are there across all units of the office. Micromanaging, lack of recognition, a climate of fear and also, lack of a clear mission and understanding of how all the units come together to fulfill a grander purpose. Now it makes sense why the turn over is so high. I'll be viewing more of your videos for sure.
@@nelsonartemio4218 Those points mentioned are not good news at all. Part of the action plan could be a fully anonymous workplace climate surveys to monitor an improvement. Because even during confidential interviews a big percentage of people don't open up and share their feedback in a transparent manner, especially when the culture of fear is installed. Good luck and keep me posted!
@@myemmotion Really appreciate it, Marat. I agree with the surveys; we will follow up with those. I'll let you know how it turns out. By the way, do you happen to know if any good books on organizational communication and climate/cultural repair?

I'm so glad you are back! Your videos were what encouraged me to switch departments in my current organization!!!
And is everything going well in the new department? I am so happy to read you, thanks for the warm welcome!
@@myemmotion Everything is wonderful in my new department. I am valued, respected and I enjoy my work. I should have left my old job a long time ago. I spent 2 years in a toxic work environment. Now I am in a positive work environment and I am thriving. Sometimes I see my old toxic boss and she treats me totally different now since she is not my boss anymore . Now when she sees me she treats me with respect and acts like nothing ever happened . When I see her my anxiety and discomfort come back. But I don't see her often, or for very long, so I can handle seeing her from time to time. I am so happy now that I am even thinking of trying to advance my career in the organization because my self esteem is back.

@@myemmotion I will keep you posted. Please keep making these videos. It's amazing how when your self confidence comes back that you want to grow and go further career wise.
You are so in-tune. I'm experiencing all that first hand now. Won't move me up or pay me more, but come to me to fix everything. Crazy thing is i recommended somebody less accomplished for a higher position in their area and they were promoted, but my company sees fit to pigeonhold me.
My exact experience.
With bad managers, I knew I would outlast them, and a new one would come along eventually.
Worse than that would be a new policy or rule that would show that the management (as you stated-lack of trust) wants you to show how every minute is being used. You can work your ass off and they still think you must be trying to screw off.
Aside from being a huge issue, it’s also extremely time consuming. An employee’s expertise needs to be trusted to get things done.
@@myemmotion Some managers needing to be in every small thing is so damn annoying, as you state just let people work OK?
We have a workforce management system at our company that dictates what you should be doing at all times of the day. It tells you when you should be on the phones, when you should be checking the ticket queue, when you should be working on existing tickets that require some research. Yes, the all-knowing management team knows that you will only need 30 minutes today to work on your backlog of tickets and if you need more time, you need to submit an internal ticket to account for the extra time you needed. Many people end up submitting half a dozen internal tickets a day because, of course, trying to predict your day is impossible. They say it's not micromanagement because it's not like they are looking over your shoulder, which is true, but it doesn't mean this still isn't micromanagement. There is no flexibility in this system and it's exhausting to deal with.
Thank you so much for making this video Marat! I can relate to this so much, people at my job never respect me or my performance at work, even when I'm the most hard-working employee they've got, thats why I quit. Keep up the great work!
respect is a basic I also left a disrespectful environment a while ago, couldn't be happier

Having been both a worker AND a manager myself, even becoming an Accredited Trainer for the CIPD and a Lecturer in HR Management, I have direct insight into Toxic and Abusive, Exploitative Business Settings.
One of my pet peeves is Bosses, Owners, Directors who berate and criticise Workers for prioritising their remuneration whilst they themselves are driven solely by Profit. They think only THEY are entitled to benefit from the labour of their employees and that the serfs should be grateful for the bowls of gruel they receive!
amen for raises and promotions when adding workload
You hit it right on the head! Thanks!
You are so welcome!
1. Pay
2. Micromanaging
3. Toxic Work Environment
4. Nothing a raise or little raise
5. Get passed up on promotion even though you deserve it. People getting promotions due to nepotism and work politics.
The place I used to work for had the boss and his disciples, the "Suck Asses" they are the ones benefiting in positions and raises.
You can say all this stuff but it doesn’t matter the bottom line is a company is worried about its profits and themselves. You are a number to get there. No matter where you work. They really don’t see the fact you selling your time and skills!
Thank you Marat for sharing your experience. I quit my job where I had worked for 7 years because of a conflict with a new manager and after being again rejected a raise I had been promised. And then got a job with x2 pay which I even increased more later.
That is such a wonderful success story, so pleased to read that. Thank you Anna for stopping by and for sharing!
Just quit my job today - main issue was a lack of management empathy, toxic micromanagement and eroding trust and basic communication. Frustrating.
Funny part is the actual work was great, very productive, and decent exercise - the workers all generally did a great job, but MY GOD, the seeping negative judgmental undercurrent tone and micromanagement from management would wreck all that positivity and wreck the day. Just a wrench into the flow and productivity, what in the world. Needless to say there was a high turnover rate and I'll be honest, those who quit are still damn good workers and incredibly social to keep up with.
Keeping employees in line with patronizing attitude doesn't work. Being unaware of it is no excuse, the mirror has to reveal something eventually after a serious pattern of the same complaints and reasoning from turnover.
Sigh, nice to get it off my chest. Hope this helps and best of luck to everyone finding a fit that's not psychologically disruptive to your life.
Your first paragraph is the reason that I quit. Most people want to do their job effectively but cannot because of the unscrupulous shenanigans of leadership. EVERYTHING that you wrote is highly relatable and definitely resonates. People who haven’t gone through it will NEVER understand. Best wishes to you.
Toxic manager is worse than bad managers! It’s destructive if you don’t leave on time.
I just quit a toxic boss. Promoted a thief (who was caught red-handed) and couldn't see my loyalty. Saw other people get screamed at and doors slammed. I mentally checked out that exact moment.
I don't have a backup plan, I trust in God as he is the actual and only provider.
If you fall, you'll only land on your feet.
Respect and honesty are vital. If it's not there, then leave.
Yes, i could have sat down, had a conversation, put my case across and explained things and come to an agreement, but is there any point if it only falls on deaf ears?
It's just how someone's programmed, that's how they roll.
It's not about the money. It's about being respected.
Your mental stability is the most important. If it's taken away from you, you'll be controlled and manipulated and then kicked to the curb one day.
Great to see you again!!!🤣🤣🤣🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💐💐💐
Thank you!
@@myemmotionI love you lol 🥰
Amen to raises promotions and title changes and upgrades. Your best workers are also generally pretty ambitious, and many companies arent willing to recognize that there are MAJOR productivity disparities between workers (especially in IT/finance, the only branches I can speak from personal experience in).
Managing headcount expense by shooting down a manager who wants to give their employee a 15 or 25% pay bump to "keep Opex down" usually leads to having to hire 3x new workers to replace the talented worker, assuming your team's productivity is vital to the company's bottom line.
I agree. It's an issue for companies to admit the productivity differences, but the reality is out there and if nothing is done, it ends up costing the business a lot more once it's too late.
My manager was great but the management above my manager was always micromanaging and overwhelming with their demands on our time. I got a letter from management that I wasn’t doing part of my job yet I had let them know that I still had not gotten access to the program that I needed to do that part of my job.
😮. Same scenario happened at my FORMER employer with the managers above my managers.

I just walk out of my previous company not because it was not a successful law firm but because of uneducated bosses re no human feelings towards other and a narsictic senior that have no respect towards women or support workers. After 3 years with my new company it was a good brilliant decision
You are brilliant!! Have a nice day 6.20.24
I hung on, out of displaced loyalty and inertia. Then one day the newby boss, an incompetent, functionally illiterate, micromanaging, favoritism type yelled at me one - last - time for something HIS buddy/crony was doing. I stopped all work immediately, filled out my retirement papers immediately, and screwed off while the papers were being processed.
Managers are responsible for being able to manage processes/tasks and lead people. When they don’t do that or just manage people, problems happen and the workplace become unfulfilling, unenjoyable, tiresome, and toxic. Good employees with good character will not continue being in such an environment and will seek better employment options elsewhere. Lastly, if employees don’t like each other, then that’s their choice. But, it’s their responsibility to not make that obvious nor act out in the workplace.
You are right. "Managing people" isn't enough, inspiring leadership is what people look up to. And yes, no matter what, it is a business after all and everyone should remain professional.
@@myemmotion Hi Marat! :) I enjoy your videos because they’re realistic and insightful about people in the workplace. Keep up the great work!
Sadly, some employers are so toxic that they cant see (or dont even care to see) how this negatively affects their bottom line. Its undusguised arrogance of the worst kind.
You’re back 🎉
My boss and her boss for months bullied me off the job I stayed for a year and a half than I quietly went into their offices gave my last hour registration and handed back the key to the building after they harassed me,over worked me ,docked my hours and spoke about me to other workers in a negative light. How goes one report boss bullying it’s hard to prove emotional abuse.Left and never returned in return they wrote two letters to other companies how insufficient I was.Started my home base business now I’m my own boss working from home.
Lack of trust means constantly being on your a$$, so so annoying
If you have a Manager called Karen / Caron or any other variant of it run. Run run run and don't even stop to look back, lol :) tellin' ya !
Ah! Welcome back! 🤗
Thank you! :)
All of them, spot on 💯
Don’t always blame the employer sometimes it can be the employee who changes ie divorce, age, bored and other things. Also sometimes some employees will never be happy
Under paid and under respected. No real chance for advancement. More hours and responsibility with a title but no pay to compensate. Very poor job security. They will lie and make up a reason of their own for letting you go when you quit which will affect your future prospects as well as your ability to collect the insurance you may have paid into while employed.. So using them for a reference is not recommended. You face disrespect from both your boss and the employees and it just isn't worth the hassle that comes along with the responsibility.
The phenomenon of "quiet hiring" is an issue.
What
"Quiet hiring" has always been there, but it is being flagged out much more nowadays. It used to be seen more as a sign of "trust" or "being given a chance".
@@myemmotionOMG, I just found out my mom is a victim of quiet hiring in which she's got assign a new staff's work without a pay raise and she has been there for 40 years.
I also think that AGE DISCRIMINATION is the biggest problem in the workforce and workplace right now, much bigger than sexism and racism.
Great I really appreciate your work
Thank you so much!
Following since 2018,your videos has helped me a lot,juz a request Mr.Marat,if possible kindly upload a video on employment gaps and how to get jobs if had gaps for more than 2 years
I think there is already a video about employment gaps
Alibaba founder Jack Ma once said: "There are only 2 reasons why an employee quit - 1) Not paid properly; 2) Feelings hurt."
It’s been so long we worked for,,, but we have worked with!!!!it’s a big difference!!!!I haven’t worked anyone in over twenty years
I find these days Managers try harder to prove themselves vs improving themselves. They just manage upwards and do little for the people doing the work of which is making them look good. Companies seem to think people managers are more important than those doing the work.
The number one reason I have quit is disrespect. I have had 3 jobs in nearly 28 years, and the most recent one I gave them 8 hours notice because I already had a new job.
😢Thanks, this was very informative.😊
You are so welcome!
I'm In that position now and now about to accept this new offer another job has offered
I quit today because they kept giving me less hours and more work. Simple.
right decision
Good!!!!
Exactly in my case it's not the position itself but toxic boss, colleagues
In my experience, it’s usually about the money.
I'm very familiar with all your points. What I'd really like to see from studies is why the managers and corporations, who must know all this too, continue to not follow these rules and lose great people. It seems that these 5 reasons are known by everyone and for many decades, but still companies don't seem to care and continue as they have in the past. I do not believe it's because of lack of training or insight. I think it's proven that companies often do in house training for many employees and talk about these issues, yet they don't seem to make a difference.
😅you are back!
Correct. I left because of boss not the position.
I am really trying to reflect on all the things that went wrong at my job. Being a manager myself I know I am not perfect, I have a major flaw, I hate confronting people and conflict. So I put more pressure on myself to do more work. I realized management just isn't for me. It is mostly just a title though, wasn't trained at all, just given a shirt and more responsibility. Instead of trying to fix the issues, all my manager would do is say what isn't getting done. I tried my best in the position I was given, but a shirt doesn't make you a good manager or leader. It is a skill that needs to be learned. I hate being responsible for others work, I refuse to be brought down by the slackers anymore. I will find a job where I am responsible for my work alone. That is why I quit.
❤❤❤ agree with you
Thanks!
“He won’t quit if we reject the promotion he earned four years ago again this year”
Famous last words
I just left my job by not showing up yesterday😂 they called one time and asked if i was coming in. I ignored it and omw to my second job to ask for more hours😂 employees need to have 2-3 incomes from different jobs to keep their power! I dont even talk to my managers and i blantanly ignore them and their calls about work. Dont bother me after i clock out! I love having this power😂😂
Thank goodness, I was wondering where you've been all this time!😅😆

I have toxic problems with my current job I'm only going to hang on until the end of this contract and move on
Nearly every big company gives the employees numbers.
H.R. lifeforms arrange job descriptions into little boxes. Each box is allocated a pay scale. The numbers are slotted into the boxes.
This has the advantage that H.R. hardly ever has to think.
If a number does exceptionally well, the number in its manager box is very limited in what it can do to reward the exceptional performer.
So the exceptional performer leaves.
In the end all the boxes are filled with mediocre performers who wonder why the company fails.
Yup its managers, especially micromanagers and ones that give too many adhoc tasks, giving more workload.
The last real job I had (UPS) I lost. But I can tell you after being in the workforce since delivering the Long Island Newsday in 1978 at the age of 12 is this. Companies don't give a fuck about retaining quality employees. They WANT that revolving door. For them it's about constantly rotating the workforce out with fresh fish to do the same job you were doing for $3.00 less on the hour than what you were doing it for. Not to mention retirement and other bennies. To them you are a worthless piece of meat. An expendable piece of garbage that they will toss like a Christmas fruitcake at the first opportunity. I was the best employee in that department, bar none. But they tossed me over people that abused FMLA, disability, etc that should have been tossed years before I was ever employed. It's 2023 people. The more useless you are the MORE likely you are to keep your job. My advice to EVERYONE in corporate America is this. Bring two masks with you to work. The one you wear in front of management and the one you wear when they're not around. Never....let me repeat that... NEVER EVER do more work than you absolutely have to to get by. Don't help anyone unless it's unavoidable be the last one there and the first one to leave whenever possible. In this age of literal corporate communism the good are always punished and the worthless are always rewarded. Trust me kids, if you don't take this very sage advice from someone like me who has learned the hard way on multiple occasions you will wish you had eventually. Your company does not give a RATS ASS about you. Show them the same respect in kind. You'll probably last a solid 30 years.

Great points here. Employees leave leaders and toxic cultures. When it comes to leaders, years of experience is not alone enough to make a solid leader.
Or a false "can do" attitude (🎶anything you can do I can do better, I can do anything better than you... 🎶)
