A gun is only a deterrent if the person using it is: 1) aware of an imminent threat 2) has experience making quick decisions in a high tension situation; and 3) is willing and able to use the gun to defend themselves. A gun isn't going to help you if a guy you didn't know was there clangs you on the back of the head and then rapes your unconscious body. It also isn't going to help if you can't even remember you have it because you're too stressed by the situation, and it certainly isn't going to help you if you are unwilling to use it.

@@Martcapt You realize that even in America more people are bludgeoned to death each year by fists and feet than are shot by guns? When you take gun suicides out of the equation its even less - by a large margin, because for some asinine reason, gun suicides are counted in the exact same statistic as gang related gun violence, muggings, etc. when being presented to the public. @@tarael86 That chance wouldn't be 50%, even if they were all armed, that's what I'm saying. Having a gun isn't the same as being able or willing to USE the gun in a high stakes situation. It's only a deterrent if people think it will actually be used. If that wasn't the case, this would make untrained women targets for felons who would go "Ooh, free gun that is registered to someone else".
@@tarael86 Except that's exactly what he said, he made no mention of them receiving training prior to or upon receiving the gun, he just said "Give every woman a gun". Maybe the training was implied, but I've learned not to give people the benefit of the doubt. A friend of mine had a gun in her purse. Her purse was snatch away from her. A week later, her gun was used in an armed robbery where a convenience clerk was shot (non-fatally). The daughter of another friend committed suicide with the gun her father gave her for protection. If we are going to use anecdotes to argue why women (or anyone) should have guns. we should have anecdotes that demonstrate why they shouldn't. Personally, I'm not a big fan of anecdotal evidence. I know they can be emotionally convincing, but cold hard statistics are much more reliable. Statistics show that people who own firearms are less safe than those who do not. Statistic also suggest that I am personally, not likely to be shot (again), so I will not try too hard to convince you that you don't need your guns. The process of Natural Selection sez, "Howdy!"
@@finaoo1167 Being the cynic that I am, I'm going to assume your request is disingenuous. But that's ok, I deal with disingenuous people all day, so I will humor you a bit... To understand the statistics I mentioned, one has to look into multiple studies. However, I will give one instance, just to demonstrate that I'm not saying things without any foundation. Here is one study that holds a singular position in the mosaic that is my understanding of the subject: [Webster DW, Vernick JS, Zeoli AM, Manganello JA (August 2004). "Association between youth-focused firearm laws and youth suicides". JAMA. 292 (5): 594-601. doi:10.1001/jama.292.5.594. PMID 15292085.] This study looks at the implementation of CAP laws in a dozen or so states. Limiting child access to guns in the household, resulted in a 23% reduction in gun deaths to children under the age of 15 [95% confidence interval]. Other states that have not implemented CAP laws did not see similar declines in the same period. The study has been well peer reviewed and considered by experts to be reliable. So, this is but one example of how a specific group of people are less safe with guns. I could give you more examples to demonstrate in a more general sense, but as I said, I don't think you are actually interested... and frankly, I don't have the patience... and I'm not trying to convince the unconvincable. We live in a culture where a majority of people think their right to own guns takes priority over the rights of others not to be victims of gun violence. I can't even change the culture within my small organization at work. What chance would I have with the gun culture?
@@quinnmendel449 - Actually, I was quite sincere. I am always open to review data on both sides of an issue. @@sunbeames nah mate, I learned how to defend myself plenty. Sticking guns in people’s faces or threatening them with their lives if they even dare step on my grass just doesn’t seem that appealing to me. Did you know that people have markets in Japan where they trust you enough to put down a money box besides their products and then leaving it unattended? There is so much trust and faith in one another they don’t even need security cameras in there. I’m sorry I’d rather walk around with friends, not worrying about pickpockets, thieves, drunk perverts or whatever than have a gun in my purse and keeping an eye on everything and everyone whenever. Like, sure y’all Americans need guns, but we don’t.
@@Delilah_Anne understood for the most part. Im unfamiliar with japanese society and only heard rumors from non japanese, so it's difficult for me to say much without learning more. I also agree that sticking guns in people's faces and giving threats if they dare to step on my grass is a terrible idea. That doesn't happen often though, considering the majority don't own guns (only one third). That said there's something I'm curious about. I've also heard (as in a rumor that I'm more willing to believe you on, even if I'm not fully convinced) that the legal system has a very "guilty because accused" kind of attitude where trials are more about lessoning sentences, not actually determining if the accused is guilty or not. How accurate is that stereotype (I'm guessing it's not 100% accurate, though if it's accurate enough that might explain why no one would ever want to try breaking the law).
@@Delilah_Anne If I'm understanding correctly (and admittedly I do have autism so some things I misunderstand the first time around) things are typically settled out of court first and foremost, and if that can't happen then the law officials (such as police, prosecutors and judges) are typically more vocal on their attitude about those that break the law moreso than the person on trial themselves. Would that be a more accurate representation?
@@sunbeames Close, but no. Japan is a very polite country, people wouldn’t go out of their way to point out someone’s flaws/an immoral act unless they are concerned about one’s wellbeing. Things are not ‘settled out of court’ like they would be in western cultures. Often people don’t even want to press charges, often when the goods have already been returned (I’m taking theft as an example here) people just don’t press charges at all and around 80% of the time the case is dropped immediately. As I said before, the crime rate is very low so whenever someone does have to show up for court they are treated harsher for lesser crimes than in western countries. I’m not an expert on this, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed something, but this is the concept of it all if I’m not mistaken.
I don't think this is a particularly good solution. I feel as though you would just be arming 50% of the rapists in the country, and unless every woman at any given point in time had their hand on the gun ready to quick-draw against anything that moved in a dark alley you wouldn't be giving them much of an advantage over any potential rapist.
As someone who has been mugged while armed, I can tell you it doesn't work out that way. Even if I were armed with a laser blaster that melts steel and has the weight of a derringer, and I was the best shot in the galaxy with a quick-draw faster than the lone ranger, I would still lose to someone sneaking up behind me in an alley with a glock.
So this is what I'm hearing from you. Because a gun might not always work and because it might be taken from you, it's better to never have the chance to defend yourself because being raped by a guy without any chance of resisting him is a million times better than being raped by the same guy if you didn't get your gun out in time or he took it from you.
Greg, are you saying ALL WOMEN are rapists? Because you just said you would be arming 50% of all rapists. You do realize Penn said to arm WOMEN...not men...right? It also isn't going to help if you can't even remember you have it because you're too stressed by the situation, and it certainly isn't going to help you if you are unwilling to use it.

I'm definitely for women arming themselves, but don't think that a gun is just an auto-win cheat code.
Yeah but that's not what Penn is saying. He's talking about guns as deterrent. What he says is true, if felons had a 50% chance of risking getting shot, a LOT less crime against women would be commited.
@@ethanmcmaster2994 No one would ever give guns to untrained people. That's stupid.

Come on! Meddling in other people's business is what the human do.
Can you direct me to the studies for the statistics you mentioned?
PMID 15292085.]
This study looks at the implementation of CAP laws in a dozen or so states.
@@sunbeames
Close, but no.

Dear Gregthegamer perhaps you should think about the idea my friend's would feel better even the cry baby ones.
While we’re at it...you ARE saying that ALL MEN are rapists, since half of them would be armed.
So which is it? Either ALL men or ALL women are rapists?
@@isaiahmarquez9717 It's neither, half of all rapist means a 50/50 male/female spilt in rapists. You wouldn't have all male or female as rapists, because that would mean everyone is a rapists.
