    I've been running complete M5100 1x11 drivetrain for over a year now with no problems. Very happy for the price. I am so happy with this setup that I purchased another M5100 drivetrain for another build. Didn't realize 620g is heavy for full suspension.

    I had a 1X 28T Chainring with an 11-36 cassette. I planned to upgrade to 11-speed when it broke or wore out, but that never happened before I sold the bike. Now with the newer Shimano 12-speed here in the midwest, it is a bit of overkill with our lack of severe elevation, but the range is impressive.

    The 5100 is my favorite reasonably priced MTB groupset.
    Can be easily fitted to most bikes and allows the use of old style casette mounting options....
    I like the all steel cassette and the front derailleur with the two chainring crank option....
    The rapidfire + shifters are also excellent as is the clutch derailleur that can be fitted with shimano XTR bearing jockey wheels.....😀

    Really like the detail you go into-its been very helpful with my builds. I have a FS with the 12 speed hyperglide + and I just recently built up my old hardtail with the 5100 drivetrain and 10-51 cassette. Took a bit of setting up the 11s derailleur but only difference I notice compared to 12s is the gear ratios being slightly different and the gear shifting on 12s being smoother especially down gears.

    I take the M5100 and saw the 51t off.
    This gives me a 450g 10 speed cassette with 11 speed spacing and I can use my old XT 11 speed shifter and rear derailleur and it’s 1/2 the price. And since it’s all steel last longer as I use this on an ebike.
    Just adjust the limit screw to not over shift.

    The largest cogs on the spider on the m5100 are hg+, you can use a 12s hg+ chain and have spectacular shifting on your 11sp setup.

    Hi, nice review again. When it comes to compatibility between older 11s RDs and this cassette, I can tell that this cassette is absolutely compatible with XT RD M8000 SGS. I have 1x11 setup on my old genius with XT M8000 SGS and M5100 11-51 cassette and it works great without any additional derelleur hanger like goat link etc. I also have 1x12 setup on my new bike and I did not notice any diffrence when it comes to shifting performance. I pieced together a m5100 drivetrain second hand with near new takeoff parts. It was very cheap and I love the increased range compared to my hardtails Deore 10 speed.
    The cassette is very heavy though, so I’m considering a Garbaruk 11 speed cassette which is half the weight.

      I've been running the microspline 12s 10-52 Garbaruk cassette on the rest of my XT/XTR drivetrains. Lighter and more durable than XTR. Also I bought mine for less than $230. XT cassettes are not much cheaper. It shifts about 90% as well as a full HG+ drivetrain and as well as a full eagle drivetrain. I cannot complain.

I know from experience that the M6100 can be used on 11 and 10 spd wide range casettes with a corresponding shifter, but never tested whether the m5100 actually works with a 12 spd. Use to run OneUp 50T conversion with the older 11-46 T cassette, with the older 11 sp derailleur and shifter and it worked fine. The same was true for a Sunrace 11 -50 11sp cassette, thus it would likely work ok with the the Shimano 11- 51 T 11sp as well, but the industry is driving consumerism. It would be a worth while test to see if it work if you have older derailleur lying about and if so how it differs with shifting quality from the new offering.

    Hay boss you might want to update the info where you say the cassette is not compatible with older generations 11s shimano derailleurs. They're absolutely compatible with the longer cage SGS. • @alexdi1367
      @alexdi1367 2 роки тому

      Fine is relative. 47T capacity on that derailleur (plenty, even for FS bikes with chain growth), but the geometry assumes a 46T max sprocket. You need more B-screw to clear 51T, which degrades shifting in the lower gears.

  • @alexdi1367
    @alexdi1367 2 роки тому

    There's a Sunrace 11-51 that's about $15 less than M5100. Doesn't have the new shift ramps on the largest sprockets, but in use, it feels the same. M5100 and shifter are $60 on AE. SRAM 1110 chain is $15. Sunrace cassette is $60. Nice 1X Shimano HT2-compatible cranks with SRAM GXP chainring are about $50 on AE. So you could do an entire 1X wide-range conversion for under $200.

    I precisely did that a while ago: I had a 1x11 SLX drivetrain, changed the cassette and the derailleur (I did put an SLX just for the matching and because I want to move on to 1x12 SLX eventually) and everything else works, so smoothly it seems like it's made for it. Because it's 11 speed, parts are cheaper (which allows me to save to eventually move to 1x12), the bigger range at the big cog allowed me to put a bigger chainring and that also allowed me to gain better top speed while pedaling without losing range for the steep climbs, it's all good for a few more grams, which also makes it more durable in the long run.

      What is the reason (other than the ability to use a 10t cog) Shimano changed their 12sp MTB freehubs, then?
      BTW

      @@LoveMTB I do not know the hard-core MTB specifics, however, as a gravel rider for the last few years (and just a bike rider for more than thirty years before the nameplate was "invented" ;) I, more than anything, appreciate that my cassettes start with the 11-12-13-(14/15)-(16/17)-... cogs, and - for my needs - the range requirements are still better served by the 2x setup.
      However, the 12sp cassette with one tooth jumps as above and 44t on the largest cog should, in the future, work pretty well too.

I got the 5100 cassette, right chain with the right length, 5100 derailleur, but slx 7000 series crank and shifter and I had perfect shifting with no chainslap. Very nice video as always informative, I could use some help here, I swapped my drive train 11 speed to 12 speed , ordered all parts online and received them except the cassette, I didn't want to change my hub so I ordered garbaruk cassette from Germany and thought it would come soon and sold my old drive train and kept the cassette on the bike, now I am desperate of riding 1 speed only 😅 so I searched and found out that sprocket spacer for 12 speed shimano cassette is 0.95 mm , my question is can I cut my 11 speed cassette spacers to 0.95 mm and have 4 sprockets spacing same as 12 speed cassette ? Thanks again keep it up 👍
