    I am a 24 year old male. I have a small pseudocyst on the very edge at the top of my right cord. And it only effects my head voice/falsetto notes when they are about to resonate which go from C5-C6. It’s a head voice reminiscent of the mezzo soprano because my puberty wasn’t that drastic. But I have a light bright toned tenor chest voice. My question is if voice therapy doesn’t work and I need surgery. Do you think the range, tone, resonance and sustainability would return the same way when I recover?

    I had parathyroidectomy surgery just over two weeks ago, and I still have a very hoarse voice. I was given no direction by my surgeon for voice hoarseness. When I first spoke with him after recovery from surgery my voice was normal, but then it went hoarse. I did have some phone conversations during these 2 weeks, but kept my talking to a bare minimum. I am trying to totally rest my voice as much as possible, but there are times when I have to order food at a fast food drive-thru, and that makes a total voice rest impossible. I am also looking for a house for myself, but refraining from contacting any realtors at this time. Please give me some positive suggestions. I am likely going to visit my local clinic for some direction tomorrow or the next day.

    It sounds like I've spent most of my life on relative voice rest! 😅 I was wondering about the psychology of the recovery process. Maybe I'm looking for different people's stories about needing, undergoing and recovering from voice surgery.

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  2 дні тому

      That’s an interesting perspective! 😊 The psychological aspect of recovering from voice surgery can indeed be significant. Many people find it helpful to hear about others' experiences during their recovery journeys.
      The emotional impact of voice surgery can vary widely. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of anxiety, fear, relief, and hope. Embracing these emotions and understanding that they are part of the process can make the journey smoother.
      Recovery requires a lot of patience and a positive mindset. Setting realistic expectations and celebrating small milestones can make a big difference. Many people find solace in hearing stories from those who have undergone similar experiences. Forums and support groups are great places to find these personal accounts.
      Working closely with voice therapists and medical professionals is crucial. Their guidance and support can be invaluable. Incorporating relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and other holistic practices can also help manage stress and promote overall well-being during recovery.

    Dan,
    I was recently diagnosed with sulcus. The indications were loss of range and stamina. The ent spoke about vocal injections to help with closure. I can’t seem to find anything helpful regarding results for the professional voice. Have you had any students or experience with fold injections? I’m hopeful that this procedure may give me my voice back. Thanks

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  5 років тому

      A sulcus is a tricky one for the professional voice user. It is often treated with injections, but its always difficult to know how successful the injection will be and how long its effects will last. Generally, I suggest that when an ENT has recommended injections, that you give it a try once and see how your voice responds.

    Another question. I had surgery last Thursday. In addition to one week's vocal rest, I was told to (physically) rest for ten days (i.e, not to bend over, go outside if I don't have to, etc.). What is the point of this? How extensitve is it meant to be? It's very difficult as a mom who feels pretty 'normal' physically to rest from all of the zillions of things I usually do each day. I am trying though! THANKS!!!

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  6 років тому

      Rachel, your larynx plays an important and integral role in allowing you to 'lift' and form muscular engagement. Instructing you to restrict your physical movement helps to protect the larynx (vocal folds) while they heal.

      Dr Dan's Voice Essentials
      Hi Dr Dan. I am a 58 yr old singer who has had surgeries 3 years ago on my vocal cords. One was to remove a small nodule on my left vocal cord, and the other was to clean up the right vocal cord from a hemorrhage that had healed. My doctor said that everything went fine and cords look great and sent me to voice therapy for 1 month. My natural voice is stronger than ever but my head voice is practically nonexistent with the exception of when I make an “Oooh or Eeee” sound which is very strong and I can do with ease. When I do try to sing in my upper register, I get a high, very light sound that is not strong at all and hard to control. So I have 2 questions for you Doctor Dan, 1) is that high pitched, light sound that comes out a falsetto? 2) Why would I only be able to sing Ooh’s and Eee’s in my head voice?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому

      I'm not a medical doctor, but I can tell you that recovery from vocal cord surgery can vary greatly from person to person and depends on a variety of factors, including the type and extent of the surgery, individual healing rate, and adherence to postoperative care. However, persistent hoarseness and throat pain two months after surgery could suggest that your voice may be healing slower than expected, or there could be other issues at play. It's important that you communicate these ongoing issues to your healthcare provider or a specialist, such as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) or a speech-language pathologist. They can provide guidance based on your specific situation and potentially adjust your recovery plan to better address these symptoms. Please follow their advice closely, including any recommendations for vocal rest, hydration, and possibly voice therapy.

      I have nodules (as they claim but I haven't seen any of the ct scans) I think they are lying to use me as a guinea pig. I'm going to write to the medical board since they actually expect me to believe them without seeing anything. I had a cancer removed but actually I don't even know what's going on. Surgery was yesterday vans they cut some of my lyrnex all crooked and I know it will never be the same again. My voice is forever ruined and I feel no reason to even live anymore. I'll just cancel all appointments and allow myself to die now. I'll come back in spirit and haunt both first surgeon and second surgeon.

    • @lauraann8005
      @lauraann8005 3 роки тому

      Do it if life matters to you but you must know the surgeon honestly doesn't care how messy they cut you up. They destroyed my singing voice and high pitch and I sound like a strained voice. They refuse to give me anti biotic and tell me take tylenol and ibuprofen and to not talk. They also showed me colored pictures of the lyrnex before, during and after when I woke up and was all groggy and I wanted to keep it but they said it goes in my file so I requested a colored copy of it and they refused. )They probably thought I was just an average stupid person that couldn't think straight after waking up ) I told them to give me my purse. They reached under the bed in the basket and gave it to me, I took my gone and took a video of it and snapped a close-up. When I got home and sedative was completely worn off and the cloud in my head was cleared up I looked at the pictures and saw that he cut my lyrnex in zig zag ways. I will never ever grow that shin back to fill the gap of the lyrnex closing completely. Just a heads up, do not let them get away with not giving you a copy and if they do refuse you need to think clearly and pull your phone out and take pictures!

      I really don't know how to be honest. But according to the voice therapist & the doctor and all the people I spoke to, it could have been from a number of things, singing, speaking, even a short uncontrolled screaming or yelling episode can traumatize. Nodules (correct me if I'm wrong Dan), are generally friction oriented maladies. Also sustained breathy phonating can make the folds vulnerable.

    Hi Dr Dan,
    My mom is not a singer, but she had polyps removed from her vocal cords about 6 days ago. It was not laser surgery.
    She was instructed to rest her voice for 5 days.
    Well, she cant let out more than a whisper and she sounds super hoarse. Like when someone has laryngitis? Just like that. She couldn't talk normal or low if she tried. Is this a common occurrence after surgery? She does have a follow up appointment with him next Wednesday but she's completely down about this and feels like she will never be able to talk again. Is it common to have no voice (only a raspy whisper) after polyp removal surgery of the vocal cords?

      Everyone's recovery is different. I highly recommend for you mom to see a speech and language pathologist who specialises in voice as soon as is reasonably possible.

      @@shabrinthamishullah8061 it was absolute hell and she made my life miserable over her not being able to talk, but she did get her voice back. Everyone’s different but it took her about 3 to 4 months. Just rest your voice and DO NOT whisper as it forces your voice-box too much and can delay healing. You’ll be able to talk again so no worries.

    Its been almost 4 weeks after having a vocal polyp removed from my vocals cords and my voice stills sounds hoarse

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому +1

      Firstly, it's great to hear that you've taken the necessary steps towards vocal health by having your vocal polyp removed. Understandably, you're eager to hear improvement in your voice, and it can be concerning when progress seems slow.
      However, please remember that healing from such a procedure takes time. Your vocal folds are delicate structures that have been through significant trauma. After this type of surgery, a recovery period of several weeks, or even a few months, is not uncommon.
      During this time, following your doctor's advice about voice rest and gentle voice use is crucial. Overusing your voice or attempting to force your voice back to normal too quickly can potentially slow your recovery or cause further damage.
      It's also a good idea to work with a speech-language pathologist or a voice therapist who can guide you through safe and effective vocal exercises to help restore your voice gradually.
      Remember, everyone heals at their own pace, and it's essential to be patient with your body as it heals. Your voice may continue to improve over the coming weeks and months.
      While it's important to listen to your body and seek medical advice if you're concerned about your progress, I encourage you to stay positive and patient. Your voice has been through a lot and deserves the time it needs to recover. Wishing you a smooth and successful recovery
