Vocal Fold Cyst: Diagnosis, Care and Treatment for Singers |

  • Many vocal pathologies develop because the singer is using their voice in a less than optimal way, but vocal fold cysts typically eventuate for all manner of reasons not necessarily because of anything the singer did or didn’t do.
    Vocal fold cysts fall into the organic grouping of voice disorders. A vocal fold cyst is a small sac of fluid that can randomly appear. They can be rather deceptive because a mucus retention cyst, for example, will often swell with vocal use and then reduce in size with vocal rest, leaving the voice user believing they’re voice has ‘healed’. But when the voice is placed under load again, the cyst will swell once more.

    Hi Dr Dan. I have been touring for 10 years around the world and this year's tour I finally started to take attention to my voice as i have gotten older, because after a 2 year break I came back to heavy touring and after shows I had hardly any voice, it's been like this on and off for a year, sometimes nothing and other times the same symptoms, recently I was sick with the change of the seasons and since this my voice just gets tired from talking like I have no foundation under it or it's dropping and then slightly fading but not going out, i'm missing that solidness in my talking voice after being sick. All of this and I've now just being a 20 show tour in the United States. I have never been one to really warm up my voice (until now) because it was so powerful and I have recently stop drinking and smoking. I saw my doctor before I left and she saw inflammation and mucus running in the back of my throat, but I couldn't see a specialist before I left, so it will be when I return home. I have tried many things and although I don't feel much sick anymore, my voice gets tired just talking to much. I also over think things A LOT too which I am sure is playing a part in things as always, so I don't know what to do....keep pushing through this month tour and get checked out when I return home (France) or fold. Even if it tires when I talk, I can use my voice on stage, it's just before and after that's the problem. There is no pain like a sore throat, I just feel something when I really focus on the problem. Thanks

    I have vocal scarring/ cyst on my right vocal fold. Currently seeing Dr Broadhurst and have surgery planned for 1st November. Is it still possible to sing with mixed voice well with vocal cyst or its too hard to keep the vocal chord closed. because I get a lot of voice breaks when singing in my mixed like flipping into whistle/flageolet a lot when singing up around B4

    I have a very small pseudocyst on the very edge of my right cord. This has caused my falsetto/head voice to make a certain gritty noise during the resonation of the tone. I work with a speech pathologist. The only way is surgery you’re saying?

      Therapy may help in the short-term, but generally cysts need to be removed surgically for complete care and recovery.

    Hello Dr.Dan, I have a vocal fold cyst, I was diagnosed last Dec 2020 and was prescribed to have it removed through microlaryngeal surgery but I still have no budget for that.Im a teacher and its hard for me to rest my voice. Is it possible that this could wait until I have decided to have it removed? Is it ok to remove it after a year?thank you so much!

    Thank you Dr. Dan for this video. I currently have a vocal cyst and was in limbo on weather or not I should do this surgery. I am also a singer and have been singing professionally for 27 years and this is the first time I’ve experienced this issue. Thank you for this in-depth video it’s much more clear than what my ENT and doctors has given me.

      I’m having surgery in a couple of weeks. I’ve had to cancel months of shows. I’ve lost my voice almost completely. It’s a partial hemorrhage, maybe that’s why I lost my voice. Don’t mess around with it. I’ve lost well over a $100,000 in canceled shows.

    I was diagnosed with a cyst about two months and the only treatment they gave me was vocal rest a week ago I had another appointment and they told me it’s gone. I’m so confused, tired, and stressed because I still feel pain and discomfort when I try to raise my voice and I can’t have a conversation for too long without feeling pain I’m a singer and I’m so frustrated that they told me I’m good to sing again but I feel so weak when speaking. What would you recommend for me to do?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому +1

      If it is a fluid retention cyst, it must be surgically removed. The cyst will swell with vocal use and reduce with rest. You might need a second medical opinion.

    I had a vocal cord cyst removed last august. I have another one. Just got confirmed yesterday. I cant sing. Its been a month. I hate it. I feel like my spirit is caged. My doctor wats to try vocal therapy to make it go away this time because he has already removed one. He wont even consider removing it until january. I cant even. I have to have a video of my vocal cords made next week. I have a nodule on the opposute vocal cord and they think thats what is causing the cyst. They said it is larger than it was last august. I want them to fix me. I hate the waiting game.
