After western, north and south Serbia, you should visit Central Serbia. Central Serbia is called Sumadija, it could be translated like Woodland, the name was given for many forests in that part of country. Kragujevac is the first capital of modern Serbia, than Belgrade become that, and is located in the center of country. Also Topola ( serbian Toskana) is in central Serbia, very close to Kragujevac.

The "Šajkača" has a history of it's own, it's something like a traditional Serbian hat, originating from what was then Austro-Hungary - or today's Vojvodina, it literally represents the war cap throughout our history, it got it's name by the little boats(called "Šajka") used for war or transportations in the rivers of Vojvodina, because it's Serbian crew, peasants mostly, wore exactly that cap! The interesting thing is that centuries have passed and it's design remains identical to it's origin.

@@Travelwithchris shame man, Serbian Christmas is very special, traditional, authentic, nothing similar to Christmas of 25th December. and guess what, the place Kovilj is located in small region from where šajkača hat originates. At times Serbs lived there were soldiers defenders against Ottomans, and they had these šajkača hats. Monarchy of 19 century Serbia (which occupy only area from Belgrade to south) imported these hats because they looked so good on Serbs working as soldiers defenders living up north. They wanted to adopt new look and awake national identity amongst Serbs to liberate from Ottomans in South. Today šajkača is main symbol of central and south Serbs :)

People of Užice have a huge reason to be proud as the surrounding region was part of the short-lived Užice republic, the first liberated region in the Nazi-occupied Europe! The main part of partisan forces was forced to leave the liberated area after the Nazis assembled forces to re-take the region, but the heroic workers battalion sacrificed their lives, to the last one in order to secure the retreat of main partisan forces, I think the place in the video is called Kadinjača (where the monument is).

    Origins of Shakshuka:
    1. North African Roots: The dish is commonly believed to have originated in North Africa, particularly in the Maghreb region, which includes countries like Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Libya. In these regions, variations of shakshuka have been eaten for centuries. The word “shakshuka” itself is thought to come from the Berber or Arabic word meaning “a mixture” or “all mixed up,” which reflects the dish’s nature.
    2. Arab Influence: Shakshuka is indeed part of Arab cuisine, and its spread to other regions is closely tied to Arab culture. It was a common dish in the Ottoman Empire, which controlled much of the Middle East and North Africa, further influencing its spread.
    3. Jewish Influence: The dish became popular in Israel due to Jewish immigrants from North Africa, particularly Tunisia and Libya, who brought the recipe with them. In Israel, it became a staple of both the Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) and Sephardic (Iberian Peninsula) Jewish communities.
    4. Palestinian Cuisine: Shakshuka is also known in Palestinian cuisine, and it is part of the broader Levantine culinary tradition. The dish’s ingredients-tomatoes, peppers, onions, and eggs-are staples in Palestinian cooking as well.
    Debate Over Cultural Ownership:
    • Cultural Appropriation vs. Shared Heritage: The debate over whether shakshuka was “stolen” from Arab or Palestinian culture is part of a broader conversation about cultural appropriation and shared culinary heritage. Many dishes in the Middle East and North Africa share common origins due to the intertwined histories and cultures of these regions. It’s difficult to pinpoint a single origin for shakshuka because, like many traditional dishes, it has evolved and been adapted by various cultures over time.
    • Shared Culinary Traditions: The culinary traditions of the Middle East and North Africa are deeply interconnected, and many dishes, including shakshuka, are enjoyed across multiple cultures with slight variations. While shakshuka has become particularly associated with Israeli cuisine in recent years, its roots are undeniably tied to the broader Arab and North African culinary traditions.
    Conclusion:
Shakshuka is a dish with North African and Arab origins that has been embraced and adapted by many cultures, including Palestinian and Israeli communities. While it is a part of Arab culinary heritage, it is also a shared dish with variations and significance across different regions. The dish’s popularity today reflects the blending of cultural influences in a region with a long, intertwined history.

Detinjci (pronounced as Deteengntsee) Children's day sort of like a Family day holiday. Dete is child and is cognate with English word daughter.

Užice was the first free republic in Nazi occupied Europe, free territory was established in the uprising in Serbia in 1941. Partizans and Četniks worked together, then the civil war broke out and Četniks with help from Germans forced Partizans out of western Serbia and workers battalion stayed back to protect the retreat and everyone in the battalion died.
