    What's the difference between the Ultra Classic, and Ultra Limited? I'm assuming the limited has upgraded features?

    • @Locrum

      Watched it again, and got my answer at 27:50.

    • @MattLaidlaw

      Good question man. I should have covered this. The FLHTCU Electra Glide Ultra Classic does not have the twin Cooled engine. That's the main difference. You have to pay $795 bucks if you want the larger infotainment system and $395 if you want the security. The Limited has heated grips and the Ultra Classic does not. The Limited comes standard with these items. The FLHTCU has a dull black inner fairing and no luggage rack. The Limited has the luggage rack and glossy black Inner Fairing.

      about to buy either an ultra classic or a limited. Just need to know what warning is sent to the rider should the electric coolant pump fail? And should it fail does the limited have to be parked and towed to repair?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому +3

      Theheelchick never heard of one failing but if it did then you'd basically just have an air cooled engine which Is what's on the Electra Glide ultra classic (pre-M8). You'd still be able to ride it no problem. You'd just have more heat.

    This is the most comprehensive bike review I have seen. Great job! After owning a 2017 Limited since September (traded in a Dyna), your assessments are fair and accurate. My only nit picks with the bike are: 1) wish the speedo was more readable. Difficult to see tick marks and LED window in all light conditions, 2) I use a SENA to communicate with other bikers. This means I can't benefit using the Infotainment system unless I buy a SENA Freewire. Major shortcoming not to include a Bluetooth headset profile. 3) for the cost of this bike they surely could put painted filler plates between rear fender and saddlebags (unsightly gaps!). This bike has extended my cold weather comfort zone down to mid 30's with the extra wind protection and heated grips. While it's not a sport bike, I was surprised at how well it takes curves given the size and weight. Your comment about parking by backing in is something I learned the hard way. Yup-had to be pushed out once.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому +5

      MuncieBill I'm "pinning" your comment. Thank you. Also, thanks for the other things you mentioned that you wish were different.

    I just rode this at the demo in Panama City Beach at the rally last week. At 5'6, This was such a better fit than the limited low. Had no problems planting both feet for maneuvering at low speeds and liked the feeling of being not as crowded as I did on the limited low. I think I found my replacement for my softail! Great and informational video! Keep them coming!

    i know this is a couple years old, but i was looking for a good used Ultra and while doing research i found your channel. Great videos and fantastic reviews of the bikes you do. Because of your channel i ended up finding a beautiful 2017 Ultra with 8k on it. I watched your reviews of both the limited and Limited low and decided on the Limited. Thanks for your great videos. I learned more from you than i did my local dealer

    Weight is a GOOD THING in bad weather. Eleven years ago I rode X-Country on my Kawasaki ZZR1200 from Northern California. On the return trip I met up with three guys from my hometown in Illinois and we rode together to Sturgis. The three from Illinois were on touring Harleys. Big storm hits us in Northern Iowa/Southern Minnesota and they rode no problem. I was getting pushed from lane to lane, overpasses were really a problem.

    Great review! You mentioned that the Limited Low (FLHTKL) is just a lower version of the Limited (FLHTK), but there are some differences to be aware of. On the FLHTKL;
    1) The passenger foot rest is a peg style and not a floorboard. VERY important for the wife!
    2) The infotainment screen is smaller and not a touch screen
    3) No navigation
    4) No heated grips
    For some, it may just be minor factor but for me it was a major factor.

    • @DodgerDude74

      Must be an upgradeable option on the Boom Box because my 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low has the touch screen and is the bigger version (6.5").

    Matt...Great video!! I used to own a '05 Road King Classic and an '07 Heritage Softtail Classic.....sold both two years ago and thought i was exiting riding. BUT...I got the bug again. Today was first time in a dealership (not in CA) in a couple years. Was sorry to see the both my old bikes no longer available! The '18 Road King does look good, but it feels like HD stripped it down w/few 'standard' features...I like the hard saddle-bags. But once you start adding up non-standard options, the cost goes up, and it made me think about getting the Limited. Your video definitely made a great case for the Limited! I really appreciate your thorough and fairly balanced review of the bike's good/not-good points. I'm 5'10", so your comments about pushing it backwards resonated. I"ll have to test one out on that....it's a big issue that usually comes up in every ride. One question re the tires: I had heard that the Dunlaps on the Road King were awful in wet situations...how does the Limited handle in rain? (and again, thanks for a GREAT video!!!).

    I love my 2010 Ultra Classic Limited. I am sure the 2017 is even nicer. I don't ever remove my tour package. Short ride or a long ride because I have everything that I need with me at all times. If it gets cold or rains or whatever I have that clothing for my wife and I. The bad side of not taking the tour package off is, My friends that only have saddle bags or nothing at all always ask me if I can give them warmer clothing or rain gear or if I can haul their stuff back home that they bought at wherever we go. It's getting harder being nice. lol

    I'm looking at an Ultra Limited 2017 (low) This is very helpful. You have probably done more from a promotional perspective to pique my curiosity and interest than just about anyone. I ride over 30,000 miles a year and am seriously going to make a decision within the week. I currently ride a Victory Vision, great bike but I am disenchanted with Polaris and don't like the Indians and staying within my criteria of only buying American made bikes, the new M8 powered Ultra, may be the ONE!

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому

      Jim Tom Stimpson that's a lot of mileage! These really
      Are comfortable bikes for the long run. The ride comfort is not that of a regular FLHTK. If you're shorter or just can't physically handle the taller FLHTK then definitely get the low. It's still a very comfortable ride. You'll like it. Test ride one.

      I rode a low yesterday, riding a 2017 Ultra (not low or limited) tomorrow that belongs to my friend. I want to ride a tank of gas to see how the wife and I feel over more than demo miles. SHe goes everywhere I do so it's paramount that the passenger comfort is good for distance.

    I don't know where to begin but you hit the nail square on the head with my question about what direction I should go as far as either getting a street glide and buying the removable tour pack or whether I should get the limited that already has the tour pack and already painted to match if I decide to go with something other than black.

    Thanks Matt. I have a question. If I install the tourpack kit, will the tour pack itself still function as if it had never been detached? Meaning, will both the top and bottom rear lights, rear speakers, rear intercom, rear volume control, and the ability to change stations from the passenger seat still work as efficiently as if the tour pack itself had never been detached, or, will I lose some of this continuity? Thanks in advance.

      The wiring are quick disconnects! It's Quick and easy the only thing is you shall move the AM FM antennae wiring down to a bracket near your fender so you still have AM FM capabilities on your Radio. I bought this stylish short (bullet looking .556)antennae so that the long antennae stays out of the way. You may lose your AM FM in certain areas, but nowadays we use Bluetooth on your phone to listen to music. Looks like a Street Glide when you remove that Tour Pak. They also make a Tour Pak garage wall mount that you screw to the wall of your garage so you can quick connect the Tour pak to your wall and out of the way.

    I have ridden the Ultra limited, the Ultra Classic and the Ultra Glide, and they all ride extremely comfortable. To say it is better then the Honda Goldwing is debatable. I own a 2015 GW and rode it to Sturgis and found that the ride was extremely comfortable. The only negative thing I have to say about the HD bikes is the fuel consumption at any speed over 75. Not near as good as the GW.

    • @MattLaidlaw

    I really want one of these bikes but what always makes me wonder is the heated grips. I ride in weather that is usually below 30 degrees and it made me think if those grips would even heat my hands enough to make my fingers feel comfortable and not the pin needle numbness I usually get. And having the fairing would be beneficial to the cold as well. lol.

    How is the heat of the Road King M8 compared to this water head? I know it's hard to quantify, but I was wondering if the lack of bodywork made up for the lack of water cooling. I used to have a nekid Vic Cross Roads and never had an issue with heat.
    Not sure my leg can do that much weight anymore, but I'm rooting for an M8 Dyna.
    FTR, the physics measurement for a body's resistance to a change in its direction is its "inertia." That is its mass*velocity. So at the same speed, a more massive body will have a greater tendency to ignore outside forces trying to change its direction. On a bike, things like rotational mass of the wheels, rake of the steering head, and width of the handlebars are a few others that come to mind. But the bottom line is, if you're on a light bike on a windy day, ride faster ;)

    900 pounds it is not a problem if the weigh is mostly at the bottom. Some bikes which are not the case is hard to bring it strait from the stand because the weight is distributed all around.

    I wonder why Harley didn't put the radiator in between the frame down tubes like Kawasaki does with their Vulcan motorcycles? Its a very clean solution and the radiator is hidden when viewing the bike from the side. The leg fairings hide the radiator, but there big and in your face and I'm sure some people are not going to like not being able to remove them. Thanks to the EPA, water cooling is here to stay, and Harley riders just need to get use to the idea of radiators on Harley motorcycles. Curious what changes Harley will make to the Sportster engine to meet the more stringent EPA requirements.

    The led lights do a great job except in turns. You have that horizon line like a car except when you turn it points at the ground and you can’t see were you are going. If you’re riding where there are no street lights you can’t see squat in a turn

    Hello Matt, nobody talks about the electric pump for the liquid cooler circulation which is positioned in a weak location exposed to overheating and offende breaks with no possibility to repair it but just replacing with a lot exspensive labour. I had an earlier 2013 flhtcu with 103 Air/oil cooled and apart from a bit of more heat in summer no particular issues with the temperature, then switched for a 2015 FLHTK and had the pump broken after only 18K Km of the odometer in the midle of a mid-long range cross-boarder trip with warranty period just runout and over €1000 of repair cost. That was the main reason that made me the decision to sell the bike last fall but I always miss harley again even if firmly convinced this is a real issue the Mo.Co. do not put in the light and needs seriously to be addressed with a proper different solution compared to the quality and the flagship of top-touring bikes.

    Great vid! I do have a question. I noticed what appears to be a green flashing light on the tach while you were riding. I've seen it on other videos of this same bike, can you tell me what it is that's flashing? Thanks!

    you briefly mentioned the Low model, how much comfort difference is there with its slimmer seat?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому

      fourteenfour the Low Model not only had a lower seat but also a lower suspension setup. You definitely sacrifice overall ride comfort for the benefit of a lower seat height.

      I rode a low model in Las Vegas and didn’t like it, just felt small. I bought a 2018 just like what you are demoing here, the heated grips above 50 degrees are way too hot above setting 2. Great bike and changed a few things to suit me better, a lot better than my old Road King except I liked the pipes on my old bike but wife loves the new bike

    I recently purchased a 2017 ultra limited. It only has 1900 miles on it. I’m concerned about sumping especially after I watched the video of your salesman. He’s the one who was doing 110 mph in the desert. His 107 m8 was sumping and locked up.
    Would you recommend getting an upgraded oil pump for my 2017m8 built in April of 2017 ?

    WOW!! 64 DEGREES!! BRRRR...LOL. NYC was upper 30s/low 40s yesterday...still rode! Matt I just bought a wired headset for my 2016 RGS. I'm going to buy the port you added to your SGS but (like you) I would rather not put it on the tank. Do u have any suggestions on where and how to mount it? Thanks.

    When you say twin cooled does that mean it has two different ways of cooling? Such as a combination of liquid antifreeze coolant going through a radiator along with either Air cooling or oil cooler?

    Great video. I am buying a ultra limited soon. Do you know anything about the 2018 colors? I love the black quartz. Also, what kind of play in price do dealers have?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому

      2018 Details won't be released until August 23rd. Every dealer has their autonomy on pricing. I'll just say this - if you're paying over MSRP then you're probably paying too much unless it's a really rare bike or limited production like a CVO or something.

    Any tips on how to turn off the radio, without turning off the audio on the intercom system would be appreciated. I still can't figure out how to turn off the radio on our 2014 Tri- Glide Ultra Classic. Thank You for another great vlog. Safe Travels.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому +1

      That's a good question. I think all you can do is turn the volume down all the way. They have separate volumes for the intercom and the radio. To access the intercom volume make sure you're using it and hit the volume up while using it.

I wanted to thank you for all these Vids., I've been riding Harley's for 23 years, but I'm learning a lot from these vids. I'm hoping next year will bring some really special stuff since it's the 115 Anniversary of Harley. What's your thoughts on the Anniversary ? Thanks. BobClapper

    Hello Matt,
    i just subbed & i watched the ad video completely. i appreciate what you did here in this video. I watched this video completely off another device at home, but wanted to let you know That I Will go to the L.A. Harley Davidson when im ready to get that bike you just rode here. The Electra Ultra Limited ? Its the bike I have had my eye on. And i believe its the same model the police dept rides as well? In some areas in L.A.
    I was working in Hollywood for NetFlix for about 9 months & coming out from Inland empire, that bike sure would of been nice to ride there & back. so can I mention HD of L.A. I am getting that bike because of your channel & video? oh and the difference of classic & limited, from reading a 3 week old post, is it the radiator pump the difference?
    thank you again.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  7 років тому +1

      SemperShock Thanks for watching man. The classic is different than the limited shown in this video. The ultra classic doesn't have the twin cooled engine and a few other features. The police ride an Electra Glide standard. It's outfitted with additional wiring harnesses etc. I don't really understand your question about LA Harley. Obviously you buy the bike wherever you want but if you're in Southern CA I'd love to earn your business on one.

    Matt, I'm an owner of a 2011 Ultra Limited & am interested in the 2017 model. However, the current deals on the 2016 models are pretty enticing. What is your feeling on the differences between the '16 & '17 models? Is it that huge that I should not consider the '16? I know it's subjective but am trying to find out how much more advanced the '17's are over the '16's. Thanks!
