    Teflon tape should be applied in the same direction as the fitting goes on, that way it won’t unwind as you put the fitting on. (Not a criticism, genuinely just trying to be helpful) keep up the good work, love the whole series

      @pjaf1 Місяць тому +4

      +1, and if the barb fitting has a rubber gasket, the tape isn't even needed at all.

    • @Bratfalken
      @Bratfalken Місяць тому +2

      But you mean't the opposit way, so that the trailing edge of the teflon is TRAILING? But seeing his application, I understand what you mean, he applied it the wrong way!

      @@pjaf1yes, as it already has a gasket, the only risk putting teflon tape on the treads of plastic fittings is cracking the outer nut!

      If you are pressure filling the tank be really careful with the ball valves on the breathers. My caravan has this setup and I accidentally connected a pressure hose to the fill point without opening the vent valve. The pressure from a normal domestic tap was enough to push the tank out of shape and break the heads off about half of the tank mounting bolts and bending the steel RHS tube the tank was mounted to. I had to fit a new steel mount and replace all the bolts.
      I’ve spoken to other people who had the van floor bulge up and break the internal furniture.
      An easy way to put a wire screen in the water fill and the breathers is to use the 20mm rubber washers with the stainless dome shaped screens that are available for washing machine and dish washer inlet pipes. Just put them between a male and female 20mm screw together fitting at the end of the hose.

Being a coconut chocolate fan and after Chris praised the Whittaker's coconut chocolate, I bought a block from Coles (at $8 for a 250g block which I think is on par per 100g with Cadbury) as I had to try it. I had a similar system in my caravan. I did modify the system to include a 40Amp Enerdrive MPPT Controller. Therefore I could charge my batteries from my alternator and Solar cells at the same time. The input on the DC/DC controller I used for portable solar blankets. It has made a big difference.

    • @TheOutFit
      @TheOutFit  Місяць тому

      We have got the MPPT too in the Mog and love it, we got up to 75 amp while driving but we have 900w of solar. With the Volvo we will "only" have 500w and we don't think the European sun will be as "effective" so that's why we are sticking with only the DC/DC at this stage. We can increase the DC/DC to get 50 amp when we drive. Thanks for watching :)

    Putting curtains around the cab and across the windscreen has the advantage that the cab can be kept cool from solar gain when parked during the day. there is always the potential that sunlight can heat up the cab without protection to very high temperatures. the alternative to that would be to use a sun shade screen like everyone else does.

I also got birch sheets from Jem&Fix but they're only 1/3 size and 12mm thick, and looks nowhere near as good as the stuff you've got.
    Also - nice progress on the wiring, I just made 40+ connections with 50mm2 cable and lugs and it was definitely not easy and that pre-wired board would've saved me a lot of headaches! 😅

    I’m in middle of 6x6 Defender build. Not started interior fitout yet. Watched both your builds… Which do you prefer, extruded alu or plyboard build for interior? Guessing the smaller interior of Volvo wood gives you better use of space? Any other thoughts?

      Nice one, it's going to be a sick build! It's a really good question that we should address in an episode but in a nutshell for a smaller vehicle like the Volvo where weight matters a lot more than the Mog, the ply is a lot lighter. It's also quite a bit cheaper, easier to work with/no need for special fasteners and better for all the weird shapes/angles. Thanks a lot for following along :)

      @@TheOutFit Not quite as extreme as yours for off road but should be pretty capable on 33’s, full lockers and currently finalising parts for rear axles to run on dunlop +2” airbags which has advantages for off road suspension movement between the rear axles by sharing air on each side giving a sort of load sharing arrangement like your volvo has. Similar size to the volvo love the raised roof idea that was brave but looks to be a great way have convertible space which as you know is important in these smaller builds. Be interested to see how you get on with it. I guess you can insulate the fabric section if camping in the mountains?

    We really are enjoying the progress you are making on the rebuild.
    HINT. When you use the hole saw ( the white ones) throu the wood push out the cut cycle left in it with a small screwdriver. Once i used my fingers on the teeth side to pull it out and rip cut my fingers.the teeth ARE sharp. NOT FUNNY

    I would never have a fill in a wheel well, even in a on road car. Cleanliness is critical for keeping good water, and even if you pressure wash the couplings and have good lids on them you cant get them clean enough. Having the breathers there is also not a good idea. Pull them behind the wooden panel and through the side so its like 2 meters up from the ground

      We'll have much bigger issues if water get to the top of the wheel arches than those small holes.

    What is the reason you put your water refill inside the wheelhouse? Won't there be a lot of crap there where you might want to keep it clean? Why not put it on the side you normally have it on?

    • @TheOutFit

      Good question we haven't explained why. We simply don't want to cut any holes on the side of the truck and have the filling point visible. There will be a cap on the filling point preventing crap to enter. Thanks for watching :)

    You gave me some great additional ideas. I could not get myself to cut the top and went with 2 rooftop tents and 3 awning side rooms instead. I did have the engine and transmission upgraded as well to allow for a comfortable 110-120km/h travel on the freeway. We have used ours in Croatia three times and are now ready to ship it to the US. Look us up when you are in the US. Love to meet up. Again awesome job and keep those videos coming. Your technical expertise far exceeds mine, so I love any opportunity to learn from you and become more self sufficient on the road by fixing potential issues that arise. Thank you!!
    Cheers,
