Since the start of the Syrian civil war, Kurdish people in the North have carved out an autonomous region of their own - Rojava - by fighting the Islamic State. Their militias, which form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have emerged as the most effective fighters against ISIS and won them a close partnership with the US.
The ruling Kurdish Party, the PYD, has set up a democratic federation made of local governments. Their constitution claims to accept people of all ethnicities and religions and treat them as equals. One of its central tenets is equality of men and women. In fact, the all-female Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) militia fights alongside the SDF, and they’re known to be especially good soldiers.
But the more territory the Kurds take from ISIS, the more worried Turkey gets.
Turkey has been at war with another closely linked Kurdish group, the PKK, for decades. In 2018, Turkey invaded the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, putting the country in direct conflict with the Kurds of Rojava.

America shouldent have gotten into syria in the 1st place.
US used the kurds as a means to defeat Isis then stopped supporting them once Isis was gone even though that's when the kurds needed their help the most.
Seems like a US thing to do...
but why would the usa do this?
i understand the usa back then, not aiding france in their wars against britan, even if they did help america win its independence, it was very tiny and was like asking for an alliance.
but the us doing this is just a united states thing to do under the obama and trump administration (both, not biased, fight pointless wars in the middle east just cause. i understand this kurdish one against isis, but afganistan and iraq intervention was UNECESSARY.)

It's a very different kind of democracy in rojava. It is a form of left wing libertarian kind of direct democracy known as democratic confederalism. The Kurdidh are definitely the most moral group in Syria.
It's the closest we have to anarcho-communism right now, I guess
Drop Therapy Anarchy and communism are complete opposites of each other. So it doesn’t make sense to describe these people as anarcho-communism. It’s either one or the other but not both. Anarchy = complete freedom, which means a small government with minimal power over its people. Communism = complete control by the government over its people, which means a large powerful totalitarian government.
Noel Navarro obviously you have no clue what communism is. Communism is stateless, it’s basically communal anarchy, the only difference between those two is that anarchy is based on the individual and communism is based on the community. The state system you are talking about is socialism the phase between the revolution and communism. And (sorry if I crush your worldview) all the so called communist country’s (USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea) are (were) not communistic but socialistic.
Lasse Hoehler It’s very obvious you’ve never read of Karl Marx, founder of communism, or ever heard of Mao Zedong. The classical definition of communism is when the means of production is owned by the state and the state (known as the commune) determines whats best for the individual. It’s a centrally planned economy, meaning individuals are not free to choose. It’s impossible to have anarchy (complete individual freedom) while having a commune determine what’s best for the individual (communism). Communism is in fact no freedom for the individual. I suggest you read “Das Kapital” to get further education on the topic of communism.
Anarchy means total economic and social freedom, individuals choosing to promote their own interest and by doing so they end up promoting the public welfare.
Anarchy in fact is an extreme form of the free-market economic system where no regulation exists and only individual freedom matters. While communism is at the extreme end where individual and property rights does not exist. The commune (just another word for the state) controls everything.
That’s all the social science lesson you’ll get from me. The rest you’ll have to do on your own. End of discussion!
@@All_you_need_is_love2018 >"the state, known as the Commune" lmao not even close. Not one thing you said is true, just take the time to read a single wikipedia article before telling people to read Capital (which is a critic of the capitalistic method of production, not an essay detailling communism, that'd be the Manifesto).
Also "anarchy is about the individual and the free-market" is so bafoonish it's beyond historical revisionism and fall in the category of pure ignorance. Anarchy is libertarian communism and nothing else, all other "anarcho-" are oxymoronic.
Before any other theory, maybe start with the wikipedia page of Marx, the Capital, the Manifesto, Kropotkin, Mahkno, the 1st Internationale, the labour movement (syndicalism, l'Internationale ouvrière, the IWW, etc.), Bookchin, the CNT-FAI, Rojava, libertarian municipalism and communalism. Will take 20 minutes and will stop making you sound as educated about socialism as a PragerU contributor.

Finally! Someone covers the Kurds, if ever there was an example of the failure of decolonization, it'd be not giving the kurds a state, they'd easily be one of the most western, liberal states in the region.
Sévres almost made it possible. Until, well...... Turkish WoI.
That's kind of bullshit... my dad is from dohuk and we Kurds are pretty not liberal. We have plenty of culture and traditions that we hold we would be pretty open to the cultures around us tho.
It wouldn't be "western", it would be middle eastern, please try not to spread the west=democracy view, it also wouldn't actually be a state but an autonomous region or similar, since they are anarchists.(Democratic Confederalists to be exact)
Don't you see in today's era that Democracy is not an answer anymore?? It's already failing the value of liberalism.
The Kurds are mostly communists. The PKK, Kurdistan Workers' Party, is a actually a communist party. Which is good, I don’t think that liberalism can gather enough power to fight against these four badass countries: Turkey, Iran, Syria, Iraq. Although both USA and EU claim to be allies of democracies, but they are not always on the side of democracy. If democracy is in their interest, they may be on the democratic side, as in Kosovo. If democracy is not in their interest, they may be on the non-democratic side, as in Catalonia.

Thats a bit simplistic. The Kurds took as much advantage of Americas invasion and supply of arms to develop their own army and push for a kurdistan. The loyalty you so speak of was for personal gain. This mini-documentary leaves out perhaps the most important part of the story, and one that greatly explains the attitudes of both the US and Turkish governments, among others. The Rojavan revolution is heavily influenced by anarchism, or at least by libertarian socialism more broadly. The means of production (etc.) are to a great degree in the hands of workers' councils, neither capitalist nor statist. Along with the secularism and feminism, this is a really extraordinary development in the world, akin to Revolutionary Spain/Catalonia in that country's civil war, The Ukraine Free Territory during the Russian Civil War, the Paris Commune, Chiapas today, and so many more.

They conveniently fail to mention Rojava is more than just Democratic, its ideological basis is in the work of Anarchist/Libertarian Socialist thinker Murray Bookchin. It's something to akin to Anarchist Catalonia or the Free Territory in Ukraine, rather than a small attempt at Western liberal democracy.
Leonard Cline well to be honest I want to see how an anarchist society would work. If they succeed it might show something to the rest of the world.
*If they succeed it might show something to the rest of the world.*
That's why they don't want it to. That's why the authoritarian socialists were the only ones who got to play out their experiments, because they could resist being crushed more easily. Its remarkable what they've done amid a war.
Better than a dictatorship.
Leonard Cline They are filthy communist.
SpinazFou Actually Murray Rothbard even admitted "Anarcho-Capitalism" is anything but Anarchism. Because it requires an authoritarian organ to have private property.
Without a state there's no way to say "this is my property" unless of course your saying that while holding a weapon.

The Kurds have been through a lot and they have done more against the War on Terror than any group and country! Why shouldn’t they have their own country and independence and to be able to decide their own destiny?
Coz The regions that kurds are in majority are LAND LOCK. A country whithout acsees to the sea always remain powerless and need support of its neighbors. So if kurds have their own country with some lands from iran ıraq turkey and syria.. How they will sell thier oil ?
And why Usa backing Kurds ? coz they stay over the petrol. If Kurds will be independent how Usa will involved to the region ? Usa never wants kurds to be free. Only the way kurds will have a free state is to agree with Turkey İran Iraq and syria.
