"Like all the songs he does, he made it his own. He's a great interpreter of songs - that's part of his genius. These are the things that can't be taken away from you."[7] He called it a personal highpoint: "'It doesn't matter what anyone says,' remarked Cave proudly. 'Johnny Cash recorded my song.'"

I'm a proud 'Aussie' & LUV Nick Cave.
But have to concede that Mr Cash has taken ownership of this amazing lyric. Wholly unintentionally but has put his stamp on it nevertheless.
I think any debt that Cash might have owed Cave was squared when Nick was invited to collaborate with Cash for a track on : American IV: The Man Comes Around.
The tune was : I'm so lonesome I could cry .The great ol' Hank Williams classic.
The story about it is fantastic!!
"He did a version of [Cave's song] The Mercy Seat. I got a call from [Cash's producer] Rick Rubin that Johnny Cash wanted to record it and was that all right. That was pretty exciting. The version is so good. He just claims that song as he does with so many.
There's no one who can touch him. I wrote and recorded that when I was fairly young, but he has a wealth of experience which he can bring. He can sing a line and give that line both heaven and hell.
When Johnny first came down those stairs into the studio he looked really frail and sick, but once he started singing he was really brought back to life. It was an incredible thing to see.
Then I was in Los Angeles at the beginning of this year and got another call from Rick Rubin saying Johnny Cash was recording and did I want to come and record with him. I said: "Of course." I had a couple of hours the next day before I had to leave. I chose a Hank Williams song - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. I got to the studio and was a bit early, and was waiting for Johnny Cash to arrive and wondering how I would be able to sing, to hold my own with this incredible voice.
He arrived, and this man with such extraordinary generosity, such an immense spirit made me feel so much at ease.
I suggested this song, and he said: "Hey yeah, Nick, I know that one. Let's do it." And the band started up and we just did it."
To you Mr Mark Wright a HUGE 👍 to you for the awesome clip !!!!!!!
Can easily picture gents both nodding & smiling at your contribution.

Love this. I recently heard Nick Cave talking about this cover and how he loved it. He said in his version, the man going to the chair is obviously guilty but Johnny Cash's version is from the perspective of an innocent man.

Apparently, whenever Cash covered a song, most of the original performers/writers of the piece would concede that the song was no longer theirs - when Johnny Cash does it, it is wholly and totally his. And I think this is true. May you rest in peace Mr. Cash.

Though Cash sure made this his own, his version is by no means "definitive"
Cave feeling honored is justified, but Cave's still is thee version, unlike other songs Cash made famous, which hardly anyone outside the circles of original fans knew about. "Hurt", für example.

It all began when they took me from my home
And put me on Death Row
A crime for which I'm totally innocent, you know
I began to warm and chill
    To objects and their fields
A ragged cup, a twisted mop
The face of Jesus in my soup
    Those sinister dinner deals
    The meal trolley's wicked wheels
A hooked bone rising from my food
And all things either good or ungood
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this weighing of the truth
    An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And, anyway, I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.
I hear stories from the chamber
Christ was born into a manger
    And like some ragged stranger
    He died upon the cross
Might I say it seems so fitting in its way
He was a carpenter by trade
Or at least that's what I'm told
    My killed hands tattooed E.V.I.L.
    across it's brother's fist
    That filthy five!
They did nothing to challenge or resist
In Heaven His throne is made of gold
The ark of His Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
    All history does unfold.
It's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away
Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries
    To enter the bright eye
I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
    And, anyway, I never lied
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this weighing of the truth
    An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And, anyway, I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.
And the mercy seat is burning
And I think my head is glowing
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this twistin' of the truth
    An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And, anyway, there was no proof
And I'm not afraid to die
And the mercy seat is glowing
And I think my head is smokin'
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all these looks of disbelief.
    A life for a life
And a truth for a truth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die
And the mercy seat is smokin'
And I think my head is melting
And in a way that's helping
To be done with all this twistin' of the truth
    An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And, anyway, I told the truth
    But I'm afraid I told a lie.

    It all began when
They took me from my home
And put me on death row
A crime for which I am totally innocent, you know
I began to warm and chill
    To objects and their fields
A ragged cup, a twisted mop
The face of Jesus in my soup
    Those sinister dinner deals
    The meal trolley's wicked wheels
A hooked bone rising from my food
And all things either good or un-good
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this weighing of the truth
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth and I'm not afraid to die
I hear stories from the chamber
Christ was born into a manger
    And like some ragged stranger
    He died upon the cross
    Might I say, it seems
    So fitting in its way
He was a carpenter by trade
Or at least that's what I'm told
    My kill-hand's tattooed 'E.V.I.L.'
    Across it's brother's fist
That filthy five, they did nothing
    To challenge or resist
In Heaven, His throne is made of gold
The ark of His Testament is stowed
A throne from which I'm told
    All history does unfold
It's made of wood and wire
And my body is on fire
And God is never far away
Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries to enter the bright eye
I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
    And anyway I never lied
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this weighing of the truth
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth and anyway
I told the truth and I'm not afraid to die
And the mercy seat is burning
And I think my head is glowing
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all this twisting of the truth
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
And anyway there was no proof and I'm not afraid to die
And the mercy seat is glowing
And I think my head is smoking
And in a way I'm hoping to be done
With all these looks of disbelief
A life for a life and a truth for a truth
And I've got nothing left to lose
And I'm not afraid to die
And the mercy seat is smoking
And I think my head is melting
And in a way that's helping
To be done with all this twisting of the truth
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth but I'm afraid I told a lie

Great cover of an awesome song, love them equally but Nick's voice and style on the original sounds like his character actually belongs in the Mercy Seat.... I'd love to think it's Nick playing the piano in JC's version..... Right now I listen often to this Perfect, beautiful cover by Nick and Johnny.... ua-cam.com/video/j1lbwnccvCc/v-deo.html
