    Hi guys, I have discovered your channel just today and devoured ALL the episodes one after the other! I thank you for your honesty in front of the cameras and, above all, thanks for your sense of humor and your empathy. As captain I understand the responsibility that weighs on Ryan and as a journalist, I appreciate Sophie's ability to communicate. I'm sure that your channel on UA-cam will soon be one of the most watched. A lot of strength and fair winds for the Polar Seal from Bilbao, Basque Country, at the corner of the evil Bay of Biscay :D !!

    Ryan; I am sure somewhere in Iowa a group of your peers have erected a statue of you, you must be a legend, moving from a landlocked state to Sweden and hooking up with a beautiful French gal and hoping on a boat to sail the seven seas. YOU ARE A LEGEND FOR US COMMON JOES.

    Hi Ryan and Sophie, first out of all the sailing channels you guys have mastered a different feel tuff to do these days. Sophie your editing style is spot on. Keep up the good work.
    Some idea's for topics.
    How to's being from the usa we don't do the med moorings anchor and back in, would be cool to see that in action.
    gadgets, gear and what not. We had a boat explode from a propane leak and 1 of the crew ended up dying, so we have learned about LP detectors. Items like that would be cool to see.
    Other channels have done it but a day in the life video...
    Keep up the great work
    Bob

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 років тому +2

      Oh Bob, your story broke my heart. We have both LP detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors onboard.
      At some points, we'll do a "how we do safety" video. I have a little list of video ideas, I'll put it higher on the list. As a former pilot, Ryan is also very interested in the idea of "risk management" onboard a sailboat.
      Thank you for your great feedback, it doesn't fall on deaf ears!

      That is kind of problem to me. It appears you're very fond of the UA-cam vloging thing but Mister doesn't show his involvement in the story telling. See : most of your vids are just you.
      I consider onscreen sailor couple more balanced, more pleasing to watch.
      Just an exemple : Riley from La Vagadonde really participate to the channel bringing his sailing expertise. He's part of the show, for the best.

You two do compliment each other, (like oil and vinegar, ha, ha) (Sophie,you are so outgoing and Ryan is so reserved) but the real question: after Spain are you cruising the Med or sailing to the Acores?

    On my boat I was the captain! and my wife the ADMIRAL said I could be ;-) Will the tender fit on the foredeck for coastal sailing? The tender is your car. Having it available quickly makes it much easier to anchor out. You can save lots of money that way.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 років тому +1

      On our boat, Ryan is the captain and I am the Supreme Allied Commander ;) We are really looking into an option for the dinghy to hang off the back of the boat. We'd love an arch, but they don't come very cheap! /Sophie

    • @sheldonpenn1815
      @sheldonpenn1815 6 років тому +1

      Electrical cycle on the boat is something important to pay attention to. An arch with davits and solar panels and maybe a wind charger would solve a lot of problems. It would make living on the hook more fun. Supreme Allied Commander to Old Salt. Right now you qualify as a pollywog cross the equator you are a shellback in the eye of King Neptune and round 2 major capes in the southern ocean you qualify as an Old Salt. Enjoy Spane, make friends on other cruising boats and don't believe all the stories other cruisers tell. We all lye aaa exaggerate a bit especially after a few beers ;-)

    Great video guys. Is your dinghy a full inflatable . What size outboard ? Davits on the back are best (I have them) but otherwise a hard bottom dinghy is great and you can lift it with your spinnaker halyard and strap it upside down on your foredeck. You quickly will get to hate pumping a full inflatable and and down when traveling.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 років тому +2

      Our dinghy is fully inflatable... we have a small electric outboard called a Torqueedo. Ryan is already hating the pumping process... and yeah, we are looking at davits, or even installing a full arch on the back (that's ryan's dream at the moment)
      /Sophie

    • @mikeferguson2828
      @mikeferguson2828 6 років тому

      Ryan & Sophie Sailing - that will really help. Once you get away from walk on moorings it will be a real pain ! And the problem is in most parts of the world you can’t leave your dinghy on the water or it will be gone in the morning so every night at least you will need to lift it

    You mentioned aviation consulting. As a professional pilot for close to 60 years, my curiosity spiked. May I ask what part of aviation you're involved with? Sophie, you may be aware that France and America have had a close relationship since the inception of our country. Indeed, it's possible that the United States wouldn't even exist without our French cousins, so it's an old bond we share. Well, old by American standards, anyway. :-)

    Regarding your tender consider a second craft being a ocean going kayak which takes very little storage space and is super easy to Launch for even Sophie if she's by herself. When is two people aboard that second craft can be really handy. The biggest thing is getting used to having bags that are watertight to put everything in... It's not hard to get water over top of a kayak but it's damn hard to sink and can carry quite a load. I know of at least one Cruiser who uses a kayak exclusively for a tender

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 років тому +1

      We actually bought foldable kayaks.... but they are still in Stockholm (I know!!!) We'll go pick them this winter, I believe they will come in very handy when we are at anchorage in the Med, for the reasons you mention. /Sophie

    • @tazmun
      @tazmun 6 років тому

      Ryan & Sophie Sailing I wish you the best with those foldable versions... But I strongly advise a complete rigid not an inflatable kayak for any kind of rough water, surf, Etc. The Inflatables and foldable type kayaks tend to have way too much drag and not be able to punch through the wave friction-free

    I should like to ask two questions: Did you ever consider buying a Hallberg Rassy? Since you lived in Sweden, I think that would be a very good option. In my opinion, H.R. is probably the best sailing boat you can get. Secondly, since you have the French and American nationalities, why do you fly the Swedish flag? Have you become Swedish citizens?

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  4 роки тому

      Hi Jan,
      Yes we have though about HR however they are currently way outside our budget for the same size boat. So no HR, for now.
      As of a few years ago we bith became swedish citizens, we met in sweden, bought the boat in sweden and started our journey from sweden, thus the swedish flag. We still fly the american and french flags. Ryan

My first thought was that it reminds me of a beloved Québécois 1970's ballad by Beau Domage "La complainte du phoque en Alaska" (ua-cam.com/video/ZGoAo8Og0Mk/v-deo.html) about a seal whose girlfriend leaves him to join a circus in the US. My second thought was, good thing you didn't use the French translation of the boat name. That would raise a few eyebrows over the VHF. Looking forward to following your journey. Fair winds!

      Hi Christine! I will have to look up that song :)
      Sometimes when we go to french harbors, I use the french translations and wait for the reactions. Some laugh openly, while some try to not laugh, which is hilarious itself :)
      Thanks for your nice comment!

    OK I asked the original question of how you got the name Polarseal and got some of the answer. Not a clothing line or insulation. One of you is the seal and the other polar. So one of you is bi-polar and the other can balance a ball on the end of your nose?

      Not a lot of people would figure out that a Hawkeyes cap hints at connections with Iowa, at least not on the side of the world I come from! :p /Sophie

    Hello, would you mind I share your channel on Oceanis owners forum and maybe FB (which you can do by yourself and may be better I don’t know) ? I suggest you follow Souls over the world channel . You may like it (or not).

      Sorry I had an internet shortage at anchorage... So here are my questions for the next time if any :
      - How do you manage condensation (yeah I know it also depends if you use the aft or forward cabin) ?
      - Do you have an AIS transponder ?
      - Dangerous question : who is the best sailor between you 2 ?
      - Very dangerous one (no need to argue) : who is the true skipper of this boat ?
      - Why not choosing an aromatic plant (aka : are you a REAL french woman or not) ?
      - I'm also concerned with the budget question and noticed you will make a video on this. I'm working on this for my own purpose too...

    Seriously. Put the real flag on the boat. You are an American citizen, are you not?

    • @iainlyall6475

      the boat was probably purchased in sweden under swedish colours. they were both living there too. there is nothing wrong with them flying under swedish colours. why not fly french colours? what is 'the real flag' in this case? oh forget it.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 років тому

      Hi peter! The boat was purchased in the UK but when we brought her to sweden we decided to flag her swedish as we had most of our sailing and relationship connections there. We are also dual citizens. But the boat is the boat and flagged as we wish. We also fly the colors of our birth citizenship (US and France) on the port flag halyard.
