It is so Ironic, I just watched your like 4 year old video about how you learned how to sail, and I commented on it, wondering if you cant make a video about the positives and negatives about flagging Swedish.
Now, if you are buying another boat, I am sure you know, but the used marked in Sweden is sooooo much cheaper than in the states. Also, there are many, many Swedish made boats that is really good priced compared to in the states, there is no boat tax, use tax, or property taxes on boats in Sweden. And the insurance, well, for many, it is the largest annual expense on a boat, well, not with Swedish boats.
    Wish you good luck.

Big changes - very exciting and sometimes scary as sh!t - but usually worth it! We're sort of going through the same; selling two boats and buying a new boat together. And moving aboard together, after "floating apart together" for years, haha!
Wishing you all the best and looking forward to seeing things develop her on the Tube. And who knows, maybe one day we'll see you out there, all on our new boats 🥳 For now, happy holidays! 🎄

Big moves in life always feel a bit scary don't they :) Ryan was really scared that us getting an apartment would mean we'd never leave it and we'd never go sail again. I was never afraid of that :p Now Ryan sees that this is a great way for us to work more efficiently on even bigger projects. I'm excited! And I wish that your new boat brings you just as much excitement and joy :)

@@stephetbeaenmer i appreciate it's a much more practical vessel, one day I might buy one myself. It's just that cats doesn't make as interesting DIY content for whatever reason, can't explain why. It's the boat or the people changing.

Whats ironic is that i have the same weird look on my face on the Bay in November and December, NO ONE sails and it just boggles my mind. We are always forced to haul by November 20th because all the dock workers shut down around Thanksgiving weekend. Many Marinas have closed recently and are bare in the northern bay area.
To take advantage of the inflated boat prices (while that lasts) and for personal health reasons, I sold my Beneteau 393 Blue Bonnet last month. I want to stop in your shop in Annapolis. Will be fun to see your place.

Point of difference is required these days to stand out on You Tube. If it’s merely a boat muscle flex then everyone on you tube with a couple of bucks is on a Cat and everyone who is broke and hoping they can become stars, thus avoiding work, is hobbling themselves together on an old mono held together with cellotape

Nice to see Polar Seal on my AIS screen in the Bay this Fall. Ryan here is a link to the Wikipedia entry for the Naval Communications Station (aka NSS).
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSS_Annapolis
The history is different than offered by Polar Seal's erstwhile captain that foggy, cold December day. As Sophie has pointed out in past videos "often wrong, never in doubt".😜

I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the Bene has performed for you over the years, crossing oceans. Does the "bendy boat" stereotype stand up? Have any difficulties with the liner/hull combination? Keel & keel bolts work out ok with groundings? Internal fixtures remained attached to the liner?

Hello there. I’ve hearing what’s been going on. You’ve been missed. We all know that you are not independently wealthy so the breaks for, let’s just say life, is understandable. Sorry the weather has not been to your liking, you caught the east coast on a good year- it could be much worse! Hopefully you and Polar Seal fared well the past two weeks with these storms. Looking forward to the next video, whenever it comes up. In the meantime, Joyeux
    Noel et bonne année!!

We are working on a similar plan as we approach retirement. Looking like Annapolis would be the logical place for a base for home and boat while being able to cruise seasonally to winter and summer destinations (and perhaps farther) while also having a place to reside during hurricane season and occasional boat layup. Love the town, have spent much time there, especially during our year long refit of our current boat, but it is an expensive place to live.

I'm sure there is lots of stuff we don't know but why not just sail to Florida and live on anchor or rent a slip for the season. Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, etc... are all airports with lots of flights an uber from the ocean. If you didn't have time to SAIL to Florida you could have got a delivery captain...
Unrelated. I suspect a "more capable boat" will not be ICW height. So I'm sure that is a trade off.

    • @RyanSophieSailing

For a while we had planned to sail to Puerto Rico this winter and just stay there, but the logistics of boat life combined with Ryan's increased workload made our ability to get our work done while living onboard incredibly challenging. On a really basic level, because Ryan's professional demands mean that he spends 90% of his time between 7AM and 10PM on the phone (I am not exaggerating), it had just become really hard for both of us to get work done in 100 square foot and without the ability to close a door. But already this summer when his project started, it had become really hard to combine work with passage making, managing weather, boat maintenance, the permanent state of decision making that boat life comes with, and all the extra time that goes into just "living" onboard. With that, our ability (both in terms of time and mental resources) to deal with "the unexpected" of boat life (and god knows that you can expect the unexpected when you live onboard ;)) decreased to an unsustainable level. The good news is that this situation is only temporary, and both Ryan and I should come out on the other side with means to make our sailing a whole lot better. So fingers crossed it goes well! :)

Sophie and Ryan- yours were the first YT videos my wife and I started watching a year ago when we first started looking into sailing. Now we belong to a club and daysail 3-4d/mo but still really enjoy your videos- they bring a very grounded and pragmatic view of sailing. Hope you can find a way to have the careers you need while still gettting some sailing in. But don't kick yourselves if you can't go back to sailing full time! Remember that Andy and Mia argue that all good sailors should have a shore base to call home.

I think you should get a catamaran, so much more space, ok so you don’t heel over so much and the ride is different but the pros far outweigh the cons.

    Happy Holidays!
With your busy schedules it doesn’t sound like you will have the time to build that little “Kit Runabout” that you mentioned. If you want a small 18’ Classic Runabout you might want to consider a legendary Lyman Lapstrake. Founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1875 and later relocated to Sandusky, Ohio, the Lyman Boat Works is known for building wooden, lapstrake “Clinker-Built” boats with legendary craftsmanship, unsurpassable utility, and steadfast seaworthiness in rough water. Our family owned a 18’ with a 30 HP Johnson Outboard in the late 1950’s and it was beautiful and very seaworthy!
    Best wishes for 2024!

Life is challenging. Hang in there, sounds like you have a well defined path. One foot in front of the other :-)
Ryan - an idea for you when you come up for air. While Lifepo4 are becoming mainstream for house loads, there are a lot of us cat sailors who would like to save weight in our dual starting batteries. There is a lot of hand wringing about how to charge them from the standard yanmar alternator (or not), reliability, etc. It would be great to have a tech episode on using Lifepo4 starting batteries. Thanks.

Funny you're mentioning that, we were just talking about the scripts we need to write for the Tech Corner of the channel, and one of them is just that: the evolution of lithium batteries technology and how to design a 100% lithium electric system. It should be a goodie!
