I've really enjoyed the a6400, though I complain often that the only truly wide autofocus lens is the $900 10-18mm. I just wish a company would make an affordable AF 12mm for the APSC lineup for vlogging.

This is a great camera but it could've been a lot better if they used the new menu system as well as 4k 120fps. Although that would translate to probably adding 1-2k to the price. 😬 Would still love to have this and be satisfied though.

Waiting for prices to drop below $1k on the Sony a6600, which is when I’ll be adding one of those to my camera roster. Excited to pick that one up. Any thoughts on when the price may actually drop down to that level???

Sony is targeting people like me who bought an a6000, want to stay with a rangefinder style camera, and haven't felt the need to upgrade. This should've been called the a7000. People who wanted an a7III already have one.

This, 2 years later with my a6k I'm fully aware of it's limitations and am ready to step into a newer model and was looking at the a6600 before this and thought wow the perfect upgrade to my setup and now the a7C comes out and I'm like DUDE. A flippy outty screen and a full frame sensor, sure it's like 400 more then a a6600 but It's everything I could need and more. I have looked into a used a7 iii body but as a screen shooter the full rotation of the a7c calls out to me, sure the ibis isn't as good but I'm sure in it'll be patched in the next FW but coming from the a6k which has no ibis of any kind I'll take poor functioning over none at all. I love the aps-c sensor and the ability to exploit it with zoom lens like a 55-300 or a 100-400 and with sony's smart zoom of 1.4x and if you're crazy add a 1.4x optical you have an insane Zoom setup for wildlife/astro photography.

100% agree with that, I'm an a6000 user and have been kinda dreading upgrading to a full frame because it won't fit in my preferred EDC bag. This smaller body style full frame camera meets all my upgrading expectations but still fits in my bag. It's a great camera to bridge the user gap between the APS-C and full frame users.

Jason, amazing video, I own the A7siii and recently got the a7c. I sold my a7iii 5 months ago. My a7c can do everything and more. Sometimes I have to shoot weddings for 5 hours in a gimbal. And the pain in my arms was horrible. Now I have a setup that offers me everything I wanted. I love the old school menus because I used it for many years and my editing workflow is so smooth. A7c is for me.

Its the little things like the one card slot, old menu, lack of the full touch screen, 1/4000 shutter speed and the 1/160 flash sync speed that really bother me Jason its not good enough for a camera priced at this level. This is priced above the a7iii here in Australia

    • @stevennichols9103

The price may be a little high, but it's still cheaper than the a73 and its tough to balance some of the compromises you mention against the new features that the camera offers over the a73. I really don't think the price is the key issue. For me, it comes down to whether you think you could get some use out of a full frame camera with a smaller form factor and small lenses in circumstances where you otherwise wouldn't take your a73 or a7r3 set up. I think it may be worth a try to some people who want full frame quality but just don't typically grab their full frame camera and lens in circumstances where they may grab a small full frame camera like this with a small lens on it. I think I may be one of those who tries it out.

    • @DavidOastler

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 4 роки тому +5

@@stevennichols9103 It's not cheaper than the a7iii once you factor in exchange rates and rrp in different countries. They're the exact same price in Singapore (which effectively means it's more expensive since I'm paying more for a cheaper camera).
Price is the absolute key issue, there was little R&D that went into this since they're just re-using parts/clearing inventory for the coming a7iv.
If they kept the dual SD slots, front and back dial, just 2 custom buttons alone. I would be more than happy to pay $1800 for it. The flippy screens and better AF is very attractive.
But they nerfed it to the ground and put a ff sensor into a body where it's impossible to shoot manually.

For photography, honestly it doesn't matter much anymore. Any modern camera can take good pictures unless you're a sports/wildlife photographer or someone who needs special features. It's the ergonomics that's really underwhelming. No dials, no custom buttons. No dual SD slot.
And also, it doesn't make sense to compare it to film. That's like saying if I complain the trains are always late I should try walking across the country to see what it was like in 1800.

    • @royrodriguez4779

@@royrodriguez4779 Still, I don't quite agrree. I understand and agree that limitations are important to learn the basics and it also helps with creativity, but at the same time technology has improved and we should try to take advantage of it. Also, in some situations, limitations could be counter-productive, e.g. wedding photography with film. Realistically, we are spoilt for choice. But I would still want something that makes this hobby and profession enjoyable. And I don't think there's anything wrong with demanding the features that will make life more enjoyable.

I’m a Sony shooter and I was really encouraged as the initial rumours were for a budget full frame to compete with the Canon RP. What we got was an a7iii with upgraded autofocus & flippy screen, in a body with less dials & less custom buttons at a AU$300 higher price, or more like $700 more if you shop around. It needed to be priced much lower or specked much higher, they did neither.
Personally I think it’s an excuse to recycle some unused components from old stock and then justify a price hike for the a7iv when that gets released.

I don’t think its the hate of the compact. I think its the pricing and the similarities with the A7iii. 1 SD card and the bad EVF. I also dont like the EVF placement on all A6000 line up. Mostly the small esthetic that people like me preferred over.

For me the main issue with this body is it costs more than the A7III but doesn't have the same features like a 1/4000th shutter. If they priced it cheaper like maybe $2300 AUD and not $3300 AUD it would be a more compelling option. At its current price I'd rather a second A7III.

If you want proper EVF, more dials and buttons then go for A7III. If you prefer the 10 bit video with 4k 120p then A7sIII.
But if you want the mix features of A7III and A7sIII with flippy screen, no record limit, real eye AF in video, good in low light with gyroscope metadata stabilization in a compact body with a cheaper price, then A7c it is.

It's true that say a 55mm f1.8 is an APS-C 35mm f1.2 which is rare to find even from Fuji (their's is f1.4) and Sony lenses are fairly light bodied. So the camera can grow and shrink as needed. The biggest let-down is no 10 BIT video, which the likes of Fuji have had for like 3 years, for now $1000. For grading and rescuing exposure 10 bit is so important that they really missed an opportunity here. Even 4K 60 could be forgiven as it's not used on every shot. A lot of people were convinced that the A7Siii's codecs would have made a limited appearance in this body. :(

The A7iii, at least in China, Japan, and maybe Korea, was kind of a success as a status symbol too. Obviously I can't say this for sure, I'm just basing this on what I heard from a few friends, both passionate and just interested in photography. The thing is, those friends are women. But none of them continued using the A7iii because of the WEIGHT! One those friend came to Italy last summer, but choose not to bring the a7iii, again because of the weight! She loves to take pictures, but couldn't see herself bringing around all day the a7iii with the kit lens.

Chris and Jordan give a balanced review with some humour added, even camera conspiracies who’s who channel is about finding the perfect camera for his needs as a clogger finds positive stuff to say! Not every one is interested in video , folk don’t give a toss about 10 bit. People have different hand sizes, if you’ve got big hands go buy a 1DX, if you have small hands, and want some thing to go in an every day bag then this size of camera is perfect, and as you say lots of small light lenses. The tamron wide angles would be great for street photography on this body get better resolution than the rx series although they are awesome for their size. Keep up the good work and stay healthy 😍

The people who gripe are the specs nerds or the a7III owners looking for an upgrade. The a7C is not for them. It is for those looking for FF quality in a compact kit, and those thinking of a6600 as well.
There was a reason for me to get the a6600. I want a more compact kit than my a7RIII. It's that simple. I would consider the a7C for this, although FF lens tends to be larger than apsc. But can consider the Samyang 18, 45, 75, Sony 35F1.8, Zeiss 55 etc.

Don't lose your time on them, you create awesome content, you spend countless hours and effort on bringing good content, whoever criticize you, you may ask them "ok and what's your contribution to the community? Why don’t you do a side by side comparison of the a6600 with a kit lens or 16-70 lens and the 7c with the kit lens or a 24-105 lens. Compare price, features, size, weight, picture quality and any other quality you see fit. That would be very interesting.

In your bit about lenses the 35mm 2.8 (sony or Samyang) is the ideal lens for this camera. if the camera had been right it's the lens that would stay on the camera for me. Also the 18mm Samyang is tiny and using each of these in crop mode gives a nice simple and very small setup.

A7c looks like to me, Sony's take of Canon's EOS Rp. But at a much worse pacakge. At that range, Nikon's Z5 is a much better deal/camera pacakge. All the specs of a A7III/Z6, shaving off some features especially in video capabilities, and sell at real low prices. A perfect tool for the serious photographer who may want to bring a cheaper lower spec'ed body every single day with them in the bag just to practice, experiement, mess around, enjoy shooting, but without the fear of causing huge damage to their workhorse gear through daily usage. And great as an entry body. Exactly as they said, expand your digital playground. Where as EOS R6 costs a huge amount(due to all the new sensor and video feature craps), EOS Rp has one card slot and no IBIS(somewhat OK for daily use though), but is really cheap for a daily camera. A7c here is more expansive than both rp and z5(maybe due to it's new and price will decrease over time, but sill,) with worse specs. Most people shooting with Sony shouldn't really be bothered with this body, they're perfectly fine with their A7III, or their APS-c would render this not much an upgrade. The problem is with Sony who invest time and cost on these, potentially making a loss on the project, instead of using that resource on refreshing and work more on their best lens lines. 85GM has been beaten by RF85, both image quality and with its ancient slow focus speed. And 70-200 GM till this date is still not as good as either 70-200E nor EF 70-200 II/III, nor say the RF70-200. Both os these are close to their 5 year mark, and should be due for a refresh given how the new RF and Z mount counterparts are both better.

The price is the big issue with this camera, if it was £400 cheaper or so then it could be in a better position but right now it's more expensive than the A7iii where I am which is just not viable.
Nikon just made the same mistake releasing the Z5 at a price point which is too close to the Z6. The Z6 often goes on sale to a price below the price of the Z5 so any smart buyers know they shouldn't even bother with the Z5.

This is actually close to a model which would tempt me to move to full frame. I'd actually be happy if they had a similar camera at a lower price with only basic video capability and a tilt screen similar to the one on the a6300. I don't need "pro" features like a dual card slot or advanced video features etc. and am unwilling to pay for features I don't need. I shoot almost exclusively stills (street and travel) and a compact weather sealed full frame rangefinder style camera with IBIS would fit me like a glove.

IMHO this combo (a7C with the retractable kit lens) makes perfect sense.
It's all about compromises, but in terms of image quality, consider that for an APS-C camera like a6600 (same weight as a7C), you would need something like *18-40 f/2.8-3.5* to get the equivalent background blur and ISO performance. That's similar to what Fuji did with 18-55 f/2.8-4, although Fuji's lens is a bit larger and has a bit of extra reach at the telephoto end.
For a f/2.8 zoom on a Sony APS-C, you would need the $1400 Sony 16-55mm F2.8G, a 3x heavier and 2.5x longer lens than the new 28-60 kit.
And the a7C still allows you to use bright f/1.4 and f/1.8 FF primes, or those tiny Samyang AF f/2.8 primes (which again give you the image of a f/1.8 prime on an APS-C).

I agree with you that there is too much rage on the net and on social media in particular. But the negative towards other brands is really old, it dates back to the analog age where Nikon and Canon users had a jab against each other on a regular basis, it’ as annoying now as it where back then. Personally I just think that that negative has become much more noticeable because of social media.
You where absolutely right that the brand doesn’t really matter as much today as it did back in the old days, in all fairness the difference is relatively small due to the fact that allot of the different products uses parts from the same manufacturers for examples Sony, so just pick the one you like the most and that suit your needs is the right approach.
Regarding the Sony A7C I still don’t get it, The regular A7 where already reasonably compact, you could easily toss a compact prime on it and it would be as compact as a FF could be without compromising too much on ergonomics. The A7C just isn’t that much more compact, I also think that has been the biggest criticism of the product that for the very slight reduction is size you loose allot of ergonomics. However I do agree with you that your not meant to use the very expensive and huge Pro lenses on it, however your where not meant to do that either with the regular A7, those lenses where primarily meant for A9 and A7R. The A7 where meant to be used with the Sony, Tamron, Samyang branded lenses.

I think the camera was delayed due to COVID-19 and the R5, R6. Sony has to respond asap with the A7SIII, and this got pushed further back. The biggest problem is the A7C has the BIONZ X and not the XR.
We have seen the promised land in the A7SIII with it's greater processing power resulting in faster, better focusing, lower rolling shutter, touch screen menus and going back to the old style seems like a big backwards move in 2020.
If this had come out in early 2020, the reception would have been much more positive instead of meh. We now know what the A7IV will have and it seems smarter to wait for that.

Nice video, with a very pertinent editorial topic. I just purchased the A7C and I love it: for my needs. I read a lot of reviews about how the XT-4 is a better camera. Maybe for some Fuji is a better system, but I don’t need all the ergonomics, and I was craving to move to full frame. I have held on to my trusty a6000 for the past 7-8 years, and NEX-6 before that, and Nex-5n before that. Moving to full frame feels very good, having been patiently waiting with my APS-C systems.

With this smaller FF camera coming out, my thoughts are once again brought to the old 18-105 f/4 lens, which was only APS-C. I’m still kind of frustrated by the fact that there isn’t any equivalent lens for FF, especially since it used to take care of most of what I did before upgrading. And while I know that the FF bodies can use the crop lenses, I’d really like to make use of the full sensor, ya know? Such a lens, if full frame, would be the perfect companion to this camera, IMO.

I've always wanted an RX-1ish compact full frame - the new menus would have been nice, but I can live with the old system. 4K60p would have been nice too, but I'm still one of the hold outs. For my needs HD is enough cause I like the smaller file sizes and reduced rolling shutter. Will enjoy getting max versatility out of my small sony primes - I use the 20mm F1.8, 28m F1.8 and the 55mm F1.8 in both full frame, super 35 mode and also using the clear image zoom. Hope that in v2 of this cam they include new menu, 4K60 and 10-bit color.

A great example is the Canon R5/R6. I am sick of videos with the word "overheating" in the title. Click bait. People perpetuates negativity even if the issue will never affect them. I've said this before, solve the overheating by putting in a fan, but the camera ends up being heavier. People will then complain about the weight and size. So what do people want?
