He's terrifying pure evil. A high functioning pyschopath who was a monster from the very beginning. He's not human, more so some kind of demon in human skin
Thank you so much for getting to Euron Greyjoy. This guy legitimately is the reason why a Feast for Crows has such an underrated place amongst all of the books and the expansion on the Dorne and Greyjoy POV's truly added a level of scale to this conflict we hadnt truly seen yet. Also, something i find amazing is how in the years following Euron's first appearance everyone kinda considered him a fraud with a big mouth until the release of the Forsaken Chapter revealed a level of dark magic connected to Euron's character thats been hinted since the beginning of the series. Euron as maybe the only other guy with Greenseer potential besides Bran and this dude would make Joffery and Ramsay look like the children they are in the grand scheme of things.
Euron Greyjoy is perhaps the type of evil I'm most intrigued by, the type of evil that sees something awful and is drawn to it instead of repulsed. Like, Euron is implied to have seen the apocalypse coming and instead of being horrified by it, like Bran, he instead was intrigued and has done everything in his power to actively speed it along. I just find that so fascinating, a person's mind going zip when it normally would zag. Something so simple as a difference in perspective spiralling out to cause so much pain and destruction.
This comment defined Euron perfectly. He is an agent of the apocalypse, he is not trying to acquire or display any power specifically for himself. He just wants to see the world burn and he knows about the impending white walker calamity.
The version of Euron we got in Game of Thrones is possibly the biggest disservice to a character from book to show I've ever seen. Amazing video, as always
We know that Euron uses "strange" artifacts to achieve his goals. Maybe Oldtown has libraries with "suspicious" books. Is it possible that Euron is wanting some mysterious/forbidden book to perform some ritual? Could this be the Faceless man's mission in Oldtown? Will Oldtown be a huge pyre of human sacrifice to summon something/someone (like the voice that young Varys heard)?
"I could hear you praying from outside the door. I always wondered: Were you praying that I would choose you or that I would pass you by?" -Euron Greyjoy
Having read the books, I talked up Euron to all of my co-workers who hadn't read the books when the show introduced him, promising them that he was potentially the worst character and some kind of apocalyptic black magic Cthulhu pirate who would help usher in the end of the world. Then we got "finger in the bum".
All we need now is a video on Christopher Lee’s iconic portrayal of Dracula and all the villains you featured in your channel introduction all those years ago will have finally been covered.
Perfect description. What a bastardization of the most fear-inducing character. Victarion is arguably the more talented warrior but he doesn't hold a candle to Euron, and that's saying a lot. Both are incredibly well-written.
I thought the portrayal of Roose was pretty apt, he was silently sinister with a very smooth voice. But that's praise for the actor and maybe the writing could have done more for him. He was glorious at the Red Wedding at least.
@@Sam-wv4fzThe show really didn’t do Roose justice, it’s not as egregious as Euron for example, but I’d say it’s around how they change Jon in Season 1-5. They’re great in the show but definitely not their book versions and I think that’s still a failure Roose Bolton in the show was never portrayed to be more evil than Ramsay, unlike the books. Ramsay seems to be the big dog Roose can’t control in the show and eventually he just easily kills him. Roose in the books is a beast, and he might even be more evil than Ramsay. However, they didn’t absolutely murder his character, so that’s why people don’t mention it much but also remember Why did they swap Roose for Tywin in the harrenhal scenes with Arya? Clearly, they didn’t care much for the character!
@@teriba453 I'd say they were equally evil but Roose had his head screwed on. But yeah they could have done a lot more with him in the show as a villain, he's such a creep

ADWD and AFFC was supposed to be one book originally. It took George 5 years to write Feast and 6 more to write Dance. So it already took him 11 years to write one of the books technically
If I’m not mistaken George is also very upset with the shows adaptation of his work, another reason he won’t finish the books. This is a valid reason, your fans being enthusiastic and itching for more content and that annoying you isn’t.
Book Euron: Sadistic warlord who seeks godlike power through dark rituals and Eldritch sorcery. TV Euron: Horny pirate dude (but at least he killed those insufferable Sand Snakes).
GRRM: *Creates one of the most intimidating, mysterious and terrifying villains of all time* D&D: We need a villain that has a "r0ckStaR swagger" for some reason
Yeah, what they did to his character is like doing a “LOTR” adaptation, reducing Sauron to a mere comic relief and telling that he created the One Ring to gain a possibility to have sex with Galadriel
Yeah the Ironborn are bastards, for sure, but I don’t think Euron can be said to be their culmination (though they did have an impact on him). Remember after he took the Shields, and he called up Victarion after the victory feast and says “I forget how noisy these Ironborn are.” He views them all as totally beneath him. Just my take
Euron Greyjoy truly is the most devious, malicious, terrifyingly evil character in A Song of Ice and Fire, and it is truly a tragedy to see what the show did to him. I think that Euron is going to use the Horn of Joramun he steals from Sam when he burns down Old Town in the Winds of Winter, and he is going to bring down the Wall, allowing the Others (White Walkers) to enter and wreak havoc on Westeros. Euron wants to initiate the apocalypse, and there is no other apocalypse in the entire world of Ice and Fire that is as notorious and deadly as the Long Night.
Awesome job. The only thing imho which is missing here is the hole king's blood sacrifice thing. Alt shift x has a great UA-cam essay on Euron where he discusses Euron causing a massive blood sacrifice of his own fleet, plus possibly his brother, a bunch of priests and! his unborn child, all to cause some massive kraken appocalypse! Yes, with Magic in the series, and no completion the to the story, Euron's plans could go anywhere, but still the fact of who he's willing to sacrifice here really is insane! Indeed the way he entrances, seduces, uses, manipulates and ultimately abuses Falia flowers, especially if it's all part of some crazy sacrifice plot, is a microcosm of just how insane he is!
Yes I love that one. I didn't think of it like that, then I was like, "OOOHHH YEEAAHH king's blood has power and Euron is the eldest after his brother 'died." He didn't fall off the bridge lol nobody believes that
Book Euron is the most evil character IMO. Tywin does terrible things in order to keep his house at the top of the totem pole, Ramsay does terrible things because he gets pleasure from it, but Euron just wants to destroy society because he's curious not because he gains anything. In the words of Alfred Pennyworth, "Some men just want to watch the world burn."
Vile perfection as always sir, now we are in desperate need of a look into the warped, delusional, haughty, and beautiful visage of one Cersei Lannister. Another character the show did a monstrous disservice too.
Definitely agree but that scene with Robert was great and lena headey is just phenomenal. That’s what is crazy to me is that these actors could’ve pulled off the book versions but DND just wanted to simplify it
Uh tbh unitl season 7 she was better than in the book. In the book she really is as Tywin puts it "not as smart as she thinks she is." She comes off as more intelligent in the show, especially in the first few seasons, though still nothing compared to Tywin, Varys, Littlefinger or even Tyrion at playing "The Game."
Thank you as always. So glad you’re covering book Euron Greyjoy, one of the most terrifying villains. He truly is cunning, a heathen, and someone to show all the evil of the ironborn, and his psychological and spirituality. Fascinating to discuss. And glad you covered him, the product of dark spirituality.
It's been more than a decade since A Dance of Dragons have released and Winds of Winter haven't out yet. Worse case scenario, George R.R Martin is going to be senile or on dementia or even die before finishing his last 2 books.
I feel like Victarion represented the Iron Islander ideals in their purest "rules as written" form while Euron used the very same religion as a vehicle to serve himself. This is laid out well in the books when the election takes place and he displays the plundered dragon horn. Euron even scares the priests including his uncle. Sometimes madness doesn't cripple like Aerys Targaryen but instead makes an insanely driven and capable leader like Euron. If anyone is worthy of his God and heritage, it's this absolute madman.
You see this picture of the sea at 2:37 Years ago there was an oil artist who could paint pictures like this. His paintings were no less than £1m a piece. I saw it on TV and he had only produced a few. Celebrities were trying to buy his work. To be able to get that effect of translucency in the water with oil paints is nothing less than astonishing. I wished I had taken more notice and knew his name to look him up now.

@@exiledzana1169 right? Cursed spirits are boring to analyze for evil. They’re literally malevolent spirits. The higher level ones with actual personalities are fairly reasonable. Hanami, Dagon, and Jogo aren’t even evil. They have sympathetic views. Sukuna is the most evil person in the show, and it’s hard to analyze him since it’s mostly implied evil from long ago. You only see him being annoyed and silly in the current age.
Victarrion is my favorite villain in the books because he views his actions as virtuous. He honors an opponent by throwing him into the ocean. He doesnt want to kill his spouse but kills her anyway because he is honor bound to do so. He feels he is helping the maester who was assaulted by offering a knife to defend himself with and is simply confused when the maester doesnt take it.
Would be really funny if he got the details of the whole "dragon binder" horn wrong. Perhaps Valyrians didn't actually use it to bind dragons, just summon/call them. But since Euron didn't exactly pickup an instruction manual for it, he just gets chomped by Viserion after he shows up.

Euron in the book is Thanos level chaos. In the show he seemed cartoonish and way nerfed down. Actually more like "Kefka Palazzo" from FF VI. He's just sadistic and doesn't care for others especially those close to him. Man tore out his wife's tongue and tortured his siblings for fun. Practices in un-holy magic and knows of the other worlds and that of the "Three Eyed Raven"
I always thought Richard Armitage would make a fantastic Euron. He looks the part, and he could definitely portray the character's mix of madness, cruelty, and ambition to a tee.

Euron is one of the few villians that are wholly unredeemable like id say hes the realm of evil like the judge from blood meridian in fact i think the two would be a unholy friendship
As much as I like psychology, and breaking down why people do evil things, there are many cases of people being loved and treated very well as children, only to become just as terrible as the ones who were abused. I forget the name of the famous killer that people usually mention, but the kid that claimed Affluenza is another case IMO. His mother (and father) spoiled him, gave him everything he wanted, and he grew up not caring about life. Although his father worked all the time to provide the family with everything, that is seen as a negative so I will blame the father as well.
The strongest evidence that Euron has actually visited Old Valyria is in the Forsaken chapter, when he wears a set of fullplate armour that Aeron believes is entirely Valyrian Steel, something rare even at the height of Valyrian power. While this is most likely, I also like an alternative idea: the secrets of creating new Valyrian Steel were lost to the Doom, but the free city of Qohor retains the skills to reforge existing Valyrian Steel, and one maester alleged that the spells involved are blood magic, common in Valyrian magic, and even child sacrifice. If reforging existing Valyrian Steel requires such sacrifice, forging new steel must require similar magic. Therefore in lieu of visiting Valyria, Euron possibly discovered the techniques to forge new steel, and had a captive smith forge the fullplate armour for him, fully willing to sacrifice whatever and whoever was necessary.
Neat theory but I much prefer the idea that he has actually been to Valyria. If we ever get another book, it may be possible we learn something of what Valyria is like from Euron since he would have gone there. May peel back a little bit of the mystery. I don’t know how many other fans feel the same, but for me I’ve always wanted to hear what the ruins of Valyria are like. In the show, Jorah and Tyrion sail through it like it’s nothing, which really annoyed me because the books make it seem as if Valyria is literally some horrific Hell on Earth.
Euron in the books is potentially an apocalyptic level threat. He could very well overshadow even The Others in terms of how dangerous he is, he makes Cersei and Ramsay look like kittens in comparison.
I really think you should do a video on Ralph Cifaretto or Richie Aprile from “The Sopranos”. I know it’s a bit of an old show, but it’s so good that it still deserves being analyzed, in my opinion.
When I watched the Alt shift x video about Euron I immediately got the books and began consuming them because I realized how different the book was from the show
I like how he described that this essay is essentially an analyzing evil essay on the iron born race as a whole. More than once over the decades, various lords suggested to the Targaryens that the islands be completely incinerated, such was Westeros’s hatred and fear of them.

But overall thanks for covering Euron Greyjoy for he was one of my earliest suggestions for you to look at VE and you didn't disappoint and Dumb and Dumber have really have taken out a lot of good stuff in the adaptation and it is a shame.
Since you did villains from shows like Game of Thrones and The Wire, I have another few TV show villains to suggest: Vernon Schillinger, Chris Keller or Ryan O’Reily from the HBO prison show Oz. The show is pretty brutal, and there’s plenty of heavy subjects, but it’s good.
You just nailed some of the great theories concerning Euron Crow’s Eye. I understand why Martin has had a hard time finishing his stories as this character alone could fill an entire book of 1000+ pages. Imagine Daenerys flying back to Meereen to find that the Greyjoys have wrecked havoc and used the magical horn to cause Viscerion to slaughter Rhaegal only to be captured by them and taken to Old Valyria to be sacrificed. It would set Euron and Victarion up as more logical villains to Daenerys’ further arc and eventual dark descent. I do have a feeling that in true SOIAF fashion, Daenerys will not return to Westeros mentally intact with all three dragons by her side.
Another great video about ASOIAF villains Vile Eye, the next three characters from ASOIAF you should do a video on is Petyr Baelish and Roose Bolton (I know you went over a lot of Roose's personality in your Ramsay Bolton video but I feel like Roose deserves his own video which might be because I’m biased because Roose is my favorite character in the books lol) and Cersei Lannister
Euron is terrifying. He's more than one thing; he's not only a pirate or a king or anything you can name him as. He's all the things. I think he's only about 40ish in A Dance With Dragons and he's already been all around the world, seen and done almost everything. He's not even missing that eye. He's some kind of sorcerer, drinks shade of the evening and keeps a foreign woman in his cabin just to use. Definitely evil, but he would laugh at you for calling him evil. He's much more complex than plain old good or evil. Probably my favorite character.

I love how none of the videos dissecting Euron dare use show Euron for the thumbnail unlike other dissections like Tywin or Ramsay.
I mean, for obvious reasons.
Lmao a very good point. I probably wouldn't have clicked on it if they had
Is it because of how dissimilar the TV show Euron is? Or am I missing something
@@DragonZombie2000It is. Book Euron outshines his joke of a TV counterpart in every conceivable way.

Something so simple as a difference in perspective spiralling out to cause so much pain and destruction.
very well said
Yea to me Euron is basically this, "The abyss stared at me and I stared back"
He killed and graped his siblings let’s not romanticise him
This comment defined Euron perfectly. He is an agent of the apocalypse, he is not trying to acquire or display any power specifically for himself. He just wants to see the world burn and he knows about the impending white walker calamity.
In the books the Greyjoys have to be the craziest family in Westeros 😭 the fact that Balon is more tame than his brothers is nuts to me
Honestly I don’t think we have enough information about Euron’s overall plan to properly analyze his evil.
Agreed, but it's still a good video
The version of Euron we got in Game of Thrones is possibly the biggest disservice to a character from book to show I've ever seen. Amazing video, as always
Watch the Percy Jackson movie after reading the book
@@TheBombasticFatRat believe me, mate, I'm fully aware of the abominations that are the Percy Jackson movies
We know that Euron uses "strange" artifacts to achieve his goals. Maybe Oldtown has libraries with "suspicious" books. Is it possible that Euron is wanting some mysterious/forbidden book to perform some ritual? Could this be the Faceless man's mission in Oldtown? Will Oldtown be a huge pyre of human sacrifice to summon something/someone (like the voice that young Varys heard)?
scary shit.
Oldtown is the most populous city in Westeros. it'd be a hell of a blood sacrifice for whatever Euron has planned
"I could hear you praying from outside the door. I always wondered: Were you praying that I would choose you or that I would pass you by?"

"Finger in the bum"
-Euron Greyjoy
So dark. I hate it every time I hear it.
The Forsaken is one dark motherfucker of a chapter.
He's disgusting. He's probably not even gay or anything, he was just 🍇ing his brothers to traumatize them, to see them suffer.
Shows just how vile Euron really is. Evil bastard.
Having read the books, I talked up Euron to all of my co-workers who hadn't read the books when the show introduced him, promising them that he was potentially the worst character and some kind of apocalyptic black magic Cthulhu pirate who would help usher in the end of the world. Then we got "finger in the bum".
Dude... That's gotta suck. 😆
All we need now is a video on Christopher Lee’s iconic portrayal of Dracula and all the villains you featured in your channel introduction all those years ago will have finally been covered.
Also Cushing's Frankenstein if we are doing Hammer Horror.
I've waited for this. Book Euron Greyjoy has such good build up.
Show Greyjoy feels more like a henchman than a main villain.
Perfect description. What a bastardization of the most fear-inducing character. Victarion is arguably the more talented warrior but he doesn't hold a candle to Euron, and that's saying a lot. Both are incredibly well-written.
Euron and Roose Bolton in the books are some of the scariest people in Westeros.
It's saddening what the show did to them...
They’re great in the show but definitely not their book versions and I think that’s still a failure
Roose Bolton in the show was never portrayed to be more evil than Ramsay, unlike the books. Ramsay seems to be the big dog Roose can’t control in the show and eventually he just easily kills him. Roose in the books is a beast, and he might even be more evil than Ramsay. However, they didn’t absolutely murder his character, so that’s why people don’t mention it much but also remember
Why did they swap Roose for Tywin in the harrenhal scenes with Arya? Clearly, they didn’t care much for the character!
@@teriba453 I'd say they were equally evil but Roose had his head screwed on. But yeah they could have done a lot more with him in the show as a villain, he's such a creep

Book Euron: Sadistic warlord who seeks godlike power through dark rituals and Eldritch sorcery.
TV Euron: Horny pirate dude (but at least he killed those insufferable Sand Snakes).
GRRM: *Creates one of the most intimidating, mysterious and terrifying villains of all time*
D&D: We need a villain that has a "r0ckStaR swagger" for some reason
Yeah, what they did to his character is like doing a “LOTR” adaptation, reducing Sauron to a mere comic relief and telling that he created the One Ring to gain a possibility to have sex with Galadriel
The mystery is absorbing. I also really like his clever references to Lovecraft without quite ripping him off. The squishers, drowned God, etc.
Maybe in hopes of being offered a sense of immortality or something from the night lord in turn maybe?
“The door creaking”. It’s creepy how three words paint a whole picture for you.
That’s what is crazy to me is that these actors could’ve pulled off the book versions but DND just wanted to simplify it
The scene with Robert is a waste of space that accomplishes nothing, that makes the Maggy prophecy invalid. The show always sucked.@@mero7731
I actually think Cersei in S1-S6 was better than the books. It was S7 &S8 where they ruined her.

One of the most fascinating characters in the entire series. Honestly horrifying what they did with him in the show
I always figured that Euron saying that Roderick had a soft head meant that he had bludgeoned him to death. Or dropped a rock on his head perhaps
You see this picture of the sea at 2:37
Years ago there was an oil artist who could paint pictures like this.
Some suggestions:
- Analyzing Evil: Park Yeon-jin from The Glory
- Analyzing Evil: Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen
- Analyzing Evil: Thor "The Swede" Gundersen from Hell on Wheels
Cmon Mahito isn’t evil, he’s just a silly little guy, you couldn’t hate a silly little guy. Could you?
There is nothing to analyse with Mahito. He's silly, boring, lacks depth. There is no idealogy in his character. At least suggest Geto if you want JJK
Thor Gunderson is a good choice...
I would love to see The Swede get coverage.
For an account that isn’t primarily about ASOIAF- actually, even for one that is- this is a great video.
Of all the topics you’ve made videos on, I’m by far the most knowledgeable and obsessed with ASOIAF and that just makes me love this video even more! Book Euron is one of my all time favorite villains and you go into all the appropriate detail to understand this Eldridge Horror of a man!
Oh yes. This is gonna be a good one.
The more I think about him, the more terrifying he becomes. His story isn't over yet, and he's already my favorite villain in the story.
Thank you. This video is the only decent explanation I have heard as to why the Iron Ilsands existed before the Andles brought Iron to Westeros.
Heck yeah! Euron is one of my favorite characters in A Song of Ice and Fire, hopefully an upcoming episode can be on either Roose Bolton or Peter “Littlefinger” Bealish!

I really liked how you dove into the lore and theories surrounding this character.
Both theories high on the “yikes” list….
