This album was originally gonna be titled “Domestika” cuz Björk wanted to make an album about the simplicities of everyday life, and sonically opposite to “Homogenic.” But it ended up becoming a homely album about intimacy and love (given her new relationship at the time). A bonafide MASTERPIECE!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Can’t wait for your reactions to her other works cuz they really are different in every era 🤩👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Vespertine is a love album dedicated to her partner at the time, Matthew Barney. Her 2015 album Vulnicura is about the end of that relationship, which is pretty cool. My fav track here has to be Unison, probably my favorite closer to an album that I’ve ever heard.
it kinda breaks my heart that this album carries a different meaning after you know that their relationship ends, like Björk sounds so euphoric in Vespertine only for her elation to turn into despair in Vulnicura
@@justin__roderick they can, and do exist at the same time which is important. The euphoria existed and was important as was the end. Black Lake??? Incapsulates this perfectly
to me Pagan Poetry is about finding someone that you're falling in love with, but being worried that your deeper complexities might be too much for them. so cool to see you listen to this!
it’s also about the fear of losing individuality in a relationship, subconsciously adapting to your partner, falling short as a single person and just focusing your energy on the relationship etc
Pagan Poetry was the last song she wrote and recorded for Vespertine, and she said the difference in it's energy is because she was done with the film, and was feeling that she could return to more edgier music after the catharsis of the rest of the songs produced for the era.
This album is honestly one of the best of all time, I can’t believe Björk was doin this type of music in 2001, this album still feels timeless in my opinion. Anyways 🛐 Vespertine supremacy 🛐
vespertine is so iconic omg... it gives me icy south pole vibes idk also i totally agree, this is an album that we have to listen to more than once in order to understand what she was doing here hahah
I do think you should listen them in chronological order. Every album is an era and a completely different musical concept. Vespertine for example, is for the time she married and felt in love; opposite to Vulnicura which is her divorce and sadness album of this same marriage. There is in fact a timelime. The songs also go in order cause she actually puts them like this to create a narrative in every album. And remember, she does 99% of music production studio beats chords. This album is based on "microsounds" that altered/repeated on the studio they create music, as the sound of crickets by night.
@@bennshouts well you still can do it :D. At least vespertine goes after homogenic so you are in correct order. 1 debut, 2 post, 3 homogenic, 4 vespertine, 5 medulla, (selma's song album, from dancer in the dark movie between this) 6 volta, 7 biophilia, 8 vulnicura, 9 utopia.
You'll have a great time with the lyrics on her album "Utopia". It's filled with sudden flashes of weird humor. She sings stuff like "When I see someone with same beard as you, I literally think I am 5 minutes away from love", or when she's looking off a beautiful mountaintop, and then being completely pissed off at how beautiful it is.
Unison and Undo are two of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. The build ups with the choir and strings give me chills every time. Absolutely stunning
The vocal arrangements on these are amazing, so lush. And gave rise to the Medulla album concept, which came after this. I can't wait for you to react to that one!
Parts of Medulla is difficult to listen to, some tracks feature heavy traditional arrangements of throat singing, which like Yoko Ono's use of Japanese singing style, might be jarring. But the album has some great gems. Vespertine and Medulla are both better listened to with headphones to really appreciate the textures. I think Biophilia too.
One of my fav from Björk. I've always felt like the first 6 tracks are like "afternoon/night tracks", and after frosti is the morning coming, making a loop... idk. Just love this album ♡
Cocoon is sensational, it's one of those tracks that needs a few listens in the dark. It seeps into your soul a little bit at a time, until eventually every second of it years later will give you those goosebumps of ecstasy up and down your spine as you smile and sway while you listen to it. Such a masterpiece. A+
There should be a video floating around in the UA-cam where she explains the concept of the album and some songs. But basically she was obsessed with what she calls “micro sounds.” Like the percussion in Aurora is people stepping on snow. She also used the sound of playing cards being shuffled. At one point she wanted a recording of a pussy Willow blossom opening but she couldn’t find it on any audio library 😂 she’s an genius. To me this is like my winter album. Sounds and the bells and glockenspiel sounds remind me of snowflakes, ice and and snow ❄️ I recommend listening to Frosti while looking out the window while it’s snowing.
Frosti is actually music box, Björk wrote the entire melody and got it adapted for music boxes, she ordered bespoke plexiglass music boxes from a company called Porter based in the US, she wanted the music box to sound like ice
Unison is my favourite song on it, back then and still is. I return to it often when I'm feeling fragile. Along with Tori Amos' Cooling (the live version on To Venus and Back album)
Ooh I'm so excited, another Björk! She wrote the bones of this album on her laptop inbetween filming "Dancer in the Dark" movie, and wanted an outlet that was beautiful in sound and in emotion, in comparison to the heaviness of the film. And something that would sound good on small speakers. She also composed the music for the film, a soundtrack that's nice to listen to, but it's eccentric character may be puzzling if not seen the movie (which is very sad and dark). Parts of the video for Pagan Poetry was pornographic, between her and her husband, but was censored eventually before release.
The sounds of this album was inspired by her laptop, how electronic music was evolving at that stage, and would sound good being played over the laptop speakers or earphones. The pops, clicks etc. Then she had music boxes made, sort of old and new meeting, with choirs and strings etc
This album is an experience start to finish. It’s a musical art masterpiece that cannot be re-made and I envy anyone who listens to it for the first time.
This album was when she Started to Incorporate MICRO BEATS , into the song production. Those little intricate sounds that you can't exactly put ur finger on and decipher bit somehow perfectly compliment the arrangement. P.S. Aurora (track 6) the sound is Footsteps in the Snow ❄️❄️
@@bennshouts ur welcome. I highly recommend watching her Videos , they actually Compliment the song & Add an extra Layer to them. I don't say that about many Artists but Def Applies to Bjork.
Aaaaah my favorite album! So Vespertine has been described as a very introverted album, where it’s about the universe inside every person. Some of the album themes are intimacy, love and eroticism, which parallels to Björks at the time new relationship with artist Matthew Barney. For example Cocoon obviously a very erotic song, and Pagan Poetry a love song about her commitment to a partner (Also both music videos for those songs, where controversial for showing nudity and blurred sex scenes). Musically the album is described by Björk as a winter album, where she decided to use harp, strings, celesta, clavichord and glitchy electronic microbeats to emulate the cold, white and crispy snow. A reason for it’s maybe darker domestic nocturnal sound and lyrics can be translated to the title og the album. Since Vespertine is an adjective for something active/occuring in the evening. Again probably my fave Björk album. Excited to see your reaction and how you feel about her other albums like the house, jazz and exotica influences of Debut, the big city music vortex that is Post and Vulnicura (second fave album) which you could say is the sequel to the love story told here Vespertine ✨
I’m loving all your videos - really exciting to watch someone experience so many albums I love for the first time. Very jealous for a lot of these. Id love to see you react to the most recent Roisin Murphy album ‘Roisin Machine’. Best album of 2020 and best disco album of the last 10 years according to me :) I think it fits in the taste of the albums you’ve been reacting to lately. Also. Bjork’s best album (for me) is Vulnicura but recommend being strong mentally to listen - it’s a hard listen. Pagan Poetry for me is about coming out of your shell for a new lover after being hurt. If you think of poetry by pagans (think Aneid, Homer, Odyssey), it’s very complicated. ‘On the surface simplicity but the darkest elements of me is pagan poetry’. And at the end she exclaims ‘i love him. This time I’m gonna keep me to myself but he makes me want to hand myself over’ so she’s talking (me for) about how she wanted to be cool and simple and easy to love and be the person she thinks her lover wants her to be; but at the end, she can’t help but be herself with her lover.
Vespertine is my all time favourite album. It's about intimacy. And Pagan Poetry is about losing yourself in a relationship. I think the "Us" in Heirloom is her being pregnant🙈 Cocoon is pretty much about her pregnancy.
for the next album i would love to see you react to Vulnicura or Post, i'm not a Bjork expert but i think Post is her most pop friendly album (maybe?), and vulnicura is straight up sad i love it
also, vulnicura is pretty recent, which i think would be nice since both of the albums you've listened to are older, its cool to see how she changed over the years you know
Narratively you should react to Vulnicura next asVespertine was the begging of a relationship and Vulnicura is the end of it, but a reaction to her debut titled Debut would be great as well!!
In sonic symbolism Bjork talks about ‘vespertine’ as an album of some sort of healing balm . She was touring for years loosing her stability so she started longing for domestic life & love / partner. Also she discovered she can work on a laptop making music so instead of going to the studio , she worked from home giving herself space for the right time to sing .. when she really ‘felt’ it , she recorded .. That’s why the vocals are so special.
This album is definitely up there in my list of favorites! The first time I listened to it in full, I was hiding from embarrassment after making a complete fool of myself while being drunk the night before. I was freshly away from my family for the first time after moving across country, and I felt so alone and like everything was just terrible... But then I chose to listen to this while I hid under my covers that day, and it helped me feel some peace. It's Not Up To You and Undo have such a special place in my heart. 💚
I never see anyone else that loves Frosti ❤️ I absolutely love that song. I've listened to it a million times in a row. It's just so beautiful and simple.
Great job Ben! keep up the good work. There is something about you that is very charming! Love the moustache and the mullet! Bjork is one of the few artists that makes music that initially might not be easy to listen to. However, the more you listen to her the more you love her. Each record is different from the next.
Fav album of all time ! You must watch the videos form this album, they are out of this world. Next stop Medulla (super weird and such a delight, pretty sure you will like it)
This album really hit me at the time, I always was a big Björk fan to begin with but this one truly made my spirit leave me. Such beauty throughout. Will you be going back to Lykke Li: Wounded Rhymes Anniversary Edition and So Sad So Sexy? I noticed you enjoy quirky sounds and musical moments which Lykke brings everytime. Hope you do more of her albums. Really enjoy your reactions.
2 months ago my brother and me were in Iceland. Bjork gaved some concerts during that time in Reykjavik. We were enjoying one of them. It was a dream come true. On the Streets Bjork passed our way. I couldn't think clearly. The day before there were Polarlights over the sky. I was listening to "Aurora". The Trip was kinda surreal. so emotional. We will be in Berlin for a concert this summer. Hopefully... 😊 She is amazing.
Yes! Thank you for that. Very pleasant reaction to watch indeed. Not sure if you’re keen on music reactions but if you enjoy WTF moments (aka “don’t get emotional” challenge) I recommend these: Bjork - All is Full of Love (ua-cam.com/video/u0cS1FaKPWY/v-deo.html), Susanne Sundfor - When the Lord - (ua-cam.com/video/1oWFCkcdmZI/v-deo.html), Sigur Ros - Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa (ua-cam.com/video/akYuy2FMQk4/v-deo.html), iamamiwhoami - Sever & Drops (ua-cam.com/video/e7zyF2QJ1BA/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/Hw0JmSRMXkY/v-deo.html), Massive Attack - The Spoils (ua-cam.com/video/8r31DFrFs5A/v-deo.html) or Live with Me (ua-cam.com/video/AIIovpUQiro/v-deo.html). Though, if you prefer live performances try these: Susanne Sundfor - Silicone Veil (ua-cam.com/video/MCklozgfgq8/v-deo.html), Goldfrapp - Moon in Your Mouth (ua-cam.com/video/g1tAtqgQiVY/v-deo.html), Antony and The Johnsons - Cripple and the Starfish (ua-cam.com/video/cvQxmmbUefY/v-deo.html) or Hope There’s Someone (ua-cam.com/video/avabPY3XgRc/v-deo.html). Album-wise… Bat for Lashes’ “The Haunted Man” (weird mix of Bjork and Purity Ring) and Lykke Li’s “so sad so sexy”.
This album is a masterpiece. Look up how she made it, also there is a live show that is one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever seen in my life. You definitely should watch it.
Vespertine is the best album of all time, it's so genius in a different level... My favorite song is Harm of Will, i've heard it's about she losing her virginity with the person she fell in love. Björk is the best artist of all time too, she's beyond genius, she's crazy(in a good way).
Her new album is out at the end of September. Hope you review it!!! I can't wait to hear what you think about it!!!! I'm excited myself. I love love love Vespertine. I think i would put it in my top 20 albums of all time. Beautiful.
This is always cool to watch a reaction video of bjork for the first time. Just a tip : for listen a bjork album into the best condition : use a headphone ^^ specially with vespertine for all the tiny sound. :) the best track for me : it’s not up to you and unison. And I have my eyes full of tear of pleasure ^^ the choir give a lot of emotion. / Ok , vidéo watch. I am realy you like it ^^ when I see you I say to myself hmmm maybe this man love hard rock music .havre not going to love vespertine. I was wrong ^^ one day listen with headphone ^^ sorry my language I am French ^^ I hope you are going to reaction to all album of bjork.
this album is about s3x, love and intimacy. it's erotic, moody, experimental (she recorded sounds at her house to creat some beats, like the ice cracking in aurora. according to her, she "did 80% of the beats on Vespertine and it took me three years to work on that album, because it was all microbeats")
You're right. You can not compare homogenic with vespertine, they're too different. Actually no one can compare a Bjork's album even with another Bjork's album cause each one is a particular and unique piece of art.
I would recommend you next time listening to Vulnicura and then Utopia. Vespertine is the beginning of her love story with her ex-husband at that time, Vulnicura represents the breakup of that relationship, and then Utopia represents the healing process of this broke up, listening to them in a row is just life changing
The tendency to put out 14 singles and 21 remixes of each song per album stops quite abruptly here, but the bsides are all pleasantly interesting - Amphibian was written for the end credits of Being John Malkovitch and is genuinely lovely (I prefer the LFO Film mix), Domestica was apparently the very early title of Vespertine. There's a gorgeous remix of Sun In My Mouth by Ensemble, which makes it sound like an orchestra of skipping CDs that blur and whirl dizzyingly, and I wish they'd had some input on the latter half of this record generally. "Pagan" originally meant someone who lived in the countryside, and by association became a term meaning "not christian" since the religion took longer for it to spread outside cities. Its meaning hasn't really changed - it doesn't describe a specific belief, just that the person has a rather niche religion. A magazine at the time put a free CD on its cover, which was unmarked and could have been any of the tracks from Vespertine, so in theory you could have an incredibly inconvenient version of the entire album just by buying enough copies of it. The CD I got was Frosti. I was VERY disappointed at the time, but now of course there could not have been a funnier one to get. Plus it's unmixed so uh, I guess I have a special few extra seconds of a music box, woo.

WOOO VESPERTINE, HER BEST!
❤️❤️❤️
Narratively you should react to Vulnicura next asVespertine was the begging of a relationship and Vulnicura is the end of it, but a reaction to her debut titled Debut would be great as well!!
Ohhh thank you!!!
Vespertine is the best Christmas/Holiday album of all time.
☃️⛄️❄️🥶
Oh my goshhh I’m so excited that you reacted to this!😭
Yay!!! 🥰🥰🥰
At last aN AWESOME björk álbum reaction! Loved it
Aww thank you!!! So glad you loved it!!!
i think pagan poetry is about how she has desires that are beautiful but incomprehensible, just like pagan poetry is
😭😭😭
That noise in Aurora is her recording herself walking through the snow....just beautiful.
Vespertine is my favorite bjork's álbum .so intense,so sad,so confidence. Greetings from lima, Perú
Yes I’ve been looking forward to this one. Aurora is by far my favourite such a great song
Aww I’m glad 🥰🥰🥰
I'm so happy you´re doing Bjök
Me tooooo!
Plot twist : Harm Of Will's lyrics are written by Harmony Korine. One of the best albums ever conceived ❤️
The noice on Frosti is the sound of Björk walking in the snow.
Love it!!
Björk: a
Ben: What???
Me: 🤣🤣🤣
Omfg HAHAHAHAHAAHHAAH
Too accurate 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm so glad this album was able to provide you peace in such a time in your life ❤️
@@ijustneedmyself Thank you 💚
👍 This album is my favorite from her. ❄ From beginning to end. I ♡ "Frosti". ⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪
☃️❄️🌨
I never see anyone else that loves Frosti ❤️ I absolutely love that song. I've listened to it a million times in a row. It's just so beautiful and simple.
Great job Ben! keep up the good work. There is something about you that is very charming! Love the moustache and the mullet! Bjork is one of the few artists that makes music that initially might not be easy to listen to. However, the more you listen to her the more you love her. Each record is different from the next.
Aww thank you SO much! ☺️🤗🥺
Means so much to hear that!!!
Youre so right about her!!!
Fav album of all time ! You must watch the videos form this album, they are out of this world.
Next stop Medulla (super weird and such a delight, pretty sure you will like it)
Yesss so keen!
You hear the walking in snow at the beginning of track number 7 "Aurora" ;)
I'd love to hear you react to Medulla for your next Bjork album!
Yess, cant wait to get through all her stuff!
YAY would recommend post or medúlla next, loved ur reaction
Yassss! So keen!
Than you!
This is my favorite album from any artist EVER! Every song is magical! ❤
She is amazing.
Omg this sounds AMAZING!! 😍😍😍😍 So happy for you!!!
Me divertí mucho viéndote anoche y disfrutando de Bjork con mis auriculares antes de dormir 👽
I'm waiting for Volta and Biophillia reactions.
Yeahaaaa
SHE ARRANGED AND PRODUCED MOST OF THE ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE TALENT!!!!
INSANE!!!
This is my favorite album by Bjork!!!! so wintery and so introvert and sensual!
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
the best album ever made. it cannot get better than this one. you can listen to it a thousand times and it never gets boring. celestial!
her vocals and production on this was way beyond
She created the instrument for frosti by herself
MY FAV ALBUM OF ALL TIME OMFG LOVE U
💜💜💜💜💜
A strangers mother made me a forever long scarf because I admired his at the time this album came out. A memory I cannot forget. I want to go back.
Omg thats so cute!!!
The quintessential art pop album
😍😍😍
love love love your reactions! i suggest you to react to some of her iconic music videos,: all is full of love, pagan poetry and bachelorette!
Thank you!!!! I will x
@@bennshouts omggggg
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Vespertine is the best album of all time, it's so genius in a different level... My favorite song is Harm of Will, i've heard it's about she losing her virginity with the person she fell in love. Björk is the best artist of all time too, she's beyond genius, she's crazy(in a good way).
Agreed!
Her new album is out at the end of September. Hope you review it!!! I can't wait to hear what you think about it!!!! I'm excited myself. I love love love Vespertine. I think i would put it in my top 20 albums of all time. Beautiful.
React to Ten Love Songs by Susanne Sundfør please 💝 it’s a masterpiece
yes!!
"He is still inside me" LOL
😱😱😂😂😂
This is always cool to watch a reaction video of bjork for the first time. Just a tip : for listen a bjork album into the best condition : use a headphone ^^ specially with vespertine for all the tiny sound. :) the best track for me : it’s not up to you and unison. And I have my eyes full of tear of pleasure ^^ the choir give a lot of emotion.
/
Ok , vidéo watch. I am realy you like it ^^ when I see you I say to myself hmmm maybe this man love hard rock music .havre not going to love vespertine. I was wrong ^^ one day listen with headphone ^^ sorry my language I am French ^^ I hope you are going to reaction to all album of bjork.
Thanks for the tip 😘
Omg hahahahaha no, I’m not a hard rock dude at all haha, thats so funny!
I will get through all her albums x
i think the next one should be Post...but i'm really excited to see your reaction of Medulla (her craziest album)
girl he ain’t ready for that one !!! he would stop reacting to her after that 😭🤣
Omg hahahahahaha im scared!
You should do her album Post next
Okiee xx
This is my favourite album ever. Handsdown.
💖💖💖
this album is about s3x, love and intimacy. it's erotic, moody, experimental (she recorded sounds at her house to creat some beats, like the ice cracking in aurora. according to her, she "did 80% of the beats on Vespertine and it took me three years to work on that album, because it was all microbeats")
Love this but still waiting on that Bratz rock angelz album reaction 🥺
Omg hahahahaha xx
You're right. You can not compare homogenic with vespertine, they're too different. Actually no one can compare a Bjork's album even with another Bjork's album cause each one is a particular and unique piece of art.
💯💯💯
Pagan poetry is one of my favourite songs of all time 🤍
Love your reactions 🥰❤️
Thank you!! 🥰🥰
pagan poetry is one of my favorite songs ever
ITS THE BEST I THINK
I would recommend you next time listening to Vulnicura and then Utopia. Vespertine is the beginning of her love story with her ex-husband at that time, Vulnicura represents the breakup of that relationship, and then Utopia represents the healing process of this broke up, listening to them in a row is just life changing
Oh wow! What a journey!! 🥰
it's not up to you and hidden place are soooo good
Yesssssssss
you should definitely do vulnicura and utopia next, such good albums
🧡🧡
React to "1940 Carmen" by Mon Laferte

React to Jessie Ware's Whats Your Pleasure? !
Its on the listttt x
React to Sevdaliza «Shabrang» please 🤍
Up
My favourite album ever 🥲

@@bennshouts can’t wait to see your medulla reaction !
Can't believe she used to be out so many remixes of each song haha!
LOVE that you got Frosti knowing how amazing it is hahaha! So good!
love the reaction ❤️ but the real question is where did ian get you this shirt??? best present ever 🎁
Thank you! 💝💝
He got it designed and then printed! 🥵
Best álbum ever!
