Before you all get excited this video is from over two years ago. Somehow it was sitting in my UA-cam cue but never got published!? Oh well.... better late than never I say 😊
Matt's Off Road Recovery is a wonderful "new" channel. Matt gives a "tour" of his highly-modified, 20-year-old, Jeep tow-vehicle. He shows all the mods he has made to the suspension. The bottom of that Jeep looks, to my Rust-Belt eyes, like it is less than a year old. Pristine. That Jeep has spent its life in the desert of southwestern Utah. Amazing how iron does NOT rust in dry, unsalted, conditions.
Gotta say thanks Eric! I've seen many of your videos. But your video on parasitic drain saved my 78 year old mother 4500 dollars from a mechanic who brought out the parts cannon. Turns out her unused Onstar was killing her battery on a nightly basis. Thanks again for your knowledge
I am still rocking the Chief Air Hammer from Harbor freight. I stuck the pointed bit through my Knee a while back. Cracked my Knee Cap from behind with it. I had to hobble around for a few weeks, but had to keep working to pay the $2000 ER visit. That was one expensive Ball Joint Rivet. Trying to save a few dollars over buying a control arm. I named her Chief Nasty.
I’m so glad that you mention to pump up the pedal. When I was working as a Mazda UK mechanic, I replaced the pads on an MX6 & reversed off the four-poster - had to give it the beans, to get it over the ramp detents & almost drove it into the wall outside.
wow! while i was working at a Stealership, a guy finished a brake job...the helper put the truck in reverse without first pumping the brakes....he backed into a car that was on a lift... grateful the car didn't fall off. he failed the drug test and was fired.
Never ever get tired of watching brake and bearing jobs. You always make it look so easy! Please keep them coming. You are now a part of my morning and evening routine.
Thanks for all these videos. They are helping me slowly build confidence to eventually attempt to replace my brake pads and rotors. To some this may be a simple task but to me it is a massive undertaking.
Hi Eric I just want you to know that you inspired me and made me feel confident in replacing my brake pads and rotors on my vehicle for the very first time in my life and i knew it was easy but i was scared that i would mess something up but thanks to you I did it and they work fantastic
Same here! Just replaced pads, front and rear on my Toyota Avalon. After watching your videos on the process I was expecting the worst but fortunately I didn't encounter any frozen bolts, etc. Didnt need Big Nasty. Luckily for me, even though salt is a factor here in CT it is not as bad as it is in NY.
I do most of my own car work and admit it was Eric the Car Guy who gave me the confidence to get stuck in. Having said that, Eric O is by far the best mechanic and car channel on UA-cam 😎.
That's great Brett but remember the brakes are your lifeline to safety and they must be done 100% correct to be safe. you really should get help from an experienced friend.

This camera has great focus and contrast, looking back at your older videos. Alot more detail in the vid, good buy👍👍👍👍👍
I really do like this guy. He does go farther than other mechanics. As an armchair quarterback I would of added dielectric compound to the speed sensor. I would of added locktite red to the wheel bearing bolts and added anti seize compound between the wheel bearing and the race to make sure there is no corrosion the next time the bearing need to be changed. The bearing he did came out fairly easy but there are times when those things are stuck and the knuckle has to come out so you have to press them out. The little anti seize would go along way for the next time.
Man oh man. What a salt buggy. Dropping salt bergs on you. And only mid october. Brings back not so fond memories of working on the family cars in the 60's back in good ole Deeetroit. Now it's Florida baby....
A long time ago a old mechanic I worked with schooled me on how to properly use a file and that was to not drag back it backwards and never use a wire brush to clean a file. You did it right according to him. Good video!
Not related, but living in Arizona I was a bit smug watching you work on rusted cars, short story long bought a cheap neon that spent time in the salt belt. I’m very humbled right now.
DId the daughters G6 a few months back. I found a good way to "release" the wheel bearing. Pull the axle out of the hub and beat the bejesus out of the bearing with a suitable sledge hammer. It came out in 3 blows and that is in the rust belt of ole' Wis.
If you weren't on the other side of the country you would be my go to mechanic. I hired a mobile mechanic to put new brakes on my 2007 Dodge Charger and he didn't put on new hardware because he said it didn't come with the breaks and he forgot to tighten up the bolts so one of my brake callipers fell off going down the road and not using him again. It seems it's really difficult to find a good mechanic. I always enjoy your videos.
You got me good I honestly thought you had your first thick christening of salt on the roads until I saw the excessive snow falling out of the undercarriage
I feel you man. As a mechanic out of work due to Covid-19 I miss working so much... I remember those steps and socket combinations. I miss using my new big ol' air hammer. 😭
I'm sorry, but I can't help myself. Whenever I hear one of your videos, at the beginning of the video I'd swear that you are welcoming us to the "Self-Made Auto Repair."
Woo, woo!!! A front end "Wrench" video. I love these. Publish more!!! At 1:37 Eric apologizes for this being "pretty standard. You guys have seen me change lots of wheel bearings." Yes I have. But not nearly enough. Double the number, triple it, and I will still want more.
Not gonna lie, I've been kinda lax when it comes to watching your vids (you know, with hunting season here in Nova Scotia and all) But I'll catch up. I'm always willing to learn especially from a good teacher like you. Thanks again for the great tips.
I just replaced the brakes on my Santa Fe, I used a wire wheel and not a file to clean up the mount but I don't have the rust that you get in the rust belt so the wire wheel did take it down to bare metal. I guess that's one of the advantages of not living in the rust belt. I have to say thanks Erik for the trick on getting the wheel bearings out, I did buy the Astro version of the hub tamer but I haven't had to use it yet. I bought the CP7150 air hammer and while it isn't "Big Nasty" for a .401 shank it hits hard (puts my Craftsman to shame). It also made removing my stuck on rotors a breeze, I tried my Craftsman and a 32oz ball peen and one of the rotors wouldn't give until I got out the CP7150 which made short work of removing the rotor. It's nice getting lazy in my advancing years and letting the tool do the work.
Seeing you using that wire wheel cleaning the caliper bracket made me think of the time my brother was using the wire wheel and he got a bit too close it it grabbed his sweat jacket sleeve and within less than a second it ripped the cuff off his jacket. He didn't even have time to react. Luckily he wasn't even hurt.
Seeing the salt accumulation on the G6 reaffirms my belief in getting multiple car washes with undercarriage wash a week during the winter season. My 13' Elantra GT in MN with no rust seems to confirm that.
2 years ago, my G6 GT also had rocker panels- like this one does! Well they're gone now... I did the wheel bearings on both sides 2 years ago, along with the coated rotors. The rotors are still nice after 2 Buffalo winters. I used good Moog bearings. Too bad this video wasn't up then. I followed your usual methods from your other SMA brake videos- and I always thoroughly clean the rust off brackets and calipers, then apply fluid film. Thank you for showing all that!!
You make quite a few pointers that I never knew before and I am older than you are like the filing of the contact points on the brake pad holder I just wish I knew more about the directional rotors
