How to power an LGB (G scale) train? Analog or Digital?

  • In this video I am comparing two types of power, analog and digital. The analog system will allow you to run one or two trains on the same track in the same direction. The digital system (MTS - Multi Train System) will allow you to run more than one train and also control other things such as points, signals and couplers. I hope this helps a few people.

      I am looking to run two trains at the same time, but I only have the basic 1 amp transformer, so I would need the 5 amp transformer and an MTS controller along with the remote control?, thanks.

    One other thing to note about digital systems (regardless of whether they're DCC standard or a proprietary system) is that while they make it easier to control multiple trains on the same track, they actually make it harder to control them automatically. The easiest method of layout automation is to use an automated block control system using magnets on the locomotives, reed switches on the track and electric signals with built in power switches to electrically activate or deactivate blocks as trains run along the layout. You can only do this with analog control, with a digital system you'd have to give that locomotive a new command to start running once its block is activated again. For automated digital control, you would need a computer to track the locations of each locomotive around the layout (Marklin has a unique DCC system that implements this into the main control unit itself, so if you run 3-rail HO you don't need a separate computer) and then send control codes to stop and start them at each signal.

      Yep, magnets are probably a great way. I do like the LGB setup, its quite basic, although this is a few years old now. I have seen their new stuff coming out, but it seems a lot more expensive. I suppose its a sign of the times!

    We're looking to potentially changing our analog setup to a digital one. I'm curious; how does it both control analog and digital? And since it can do that, can it still power signals and lights? Otherwise, great video. Sorry, if I missed the explanation for my question. Also, the sound the analog train makes, is that as loud as it sounds in this video?

    • @dylan400d
      @dylan400d  4 роки тому +1

      hey sorry for the late response. It can power a number of DCC (Digital devices) and will send a pulse down the track to control anything that is analogue. If you have two analogue trains on the same section of track then they will both move when the command is given. With regards to points, signals, there is an add-on kit you need, however from the controller, you can control everything individually. Massoth even do a program which can be run from a laptop and fully automated.

    A very informative video . But I assume that locomotives fitted with DCC decoders will not be able to respond to the commands from the MTS and only LGB digital locos can be controlled . Please correct me if am wrong here and thanks

    • @dylan400d

      Hello, any loco with a DCC should work. There's not too many brands out there, but yes, if you do not have a DCC you cannot control the functions.

    Starters should probably use the lgb analogs tho the lgb digitals are quite pricey and not reqlly keeping up with todays technology there are other brands that focus on digital g scale controlling and they make much better stuff which will allow you to do all this and control track branches and all that stuff what im trying to say is look for other brands compatible with lgb trains because it will be of much higher quality

    • @dylan400d
      @dylan400d  4 роки тому

      The starter sets are mostly 'DCC ready' which is great for later on. If you only have a small track setup or one or two trains, then you won't necessarily need a DCC setup. It's great to see what the future holds, being able to just control everything from a smartphone is the aim.

      No you can just use one. If you want to use both you can, at the same time. If you want to use analouge power you just use 00 on the control pad and off you go. Its intelligent enough to be able to use the digital and analouge power at the same time.

    great video but i got a transformer from lgb that has a connection that looks like a light bulb and a track sign, what do those do? i tried connecting it from the wiring on my track but my train just buzzes and stalls. but when i connect the wiring to the train symbol on the transformer, it runs but no lights turn on my train, any help? thanks!!!

    • @dylan400d
      @dylan400d  4 роки тому

      This might be a light to show the direction of a set of points. Typically, with MTS systems you need a separate controller which connects to the track and then connects to up to four sets of points. You would need one of these before operating other devices.

    How do you know what the channel is for each train?

    • @dylan400d
      @dylan400d  6 років тому +1

      Usually, when you purchase a decoder they are set to channel 3 (i think - it could be 4). You can then use a programmer to set it to a new channel. With the LGB set you can easily do this.

      Hello, it's sometimes difficult to price locos as it does depend on age, condition, use etc. Keep an eye on eBay to see what similar lots/ auctions go for. You might be lucky with things like Facebook marketplace or Gumtree, but it really does depend on the uptake for your local area. Lastly, are there any local model shops near ? Some might offer a commission sale on your behalf.

      There's a few different types of software out there for PC, you can use TrainController which is around £110 although thats for the bronze starting software, they do more expensive versions, LGB did do the MTS 6 software and with that you'll need something like this: www.lgb.com/products/details/article/55045/. Its not cheap.

      It depends on when they were bought and the sticker placed on the loco. This site has it pretty much covered. www.allaboutlgb.com/lgb%20decoder%20installation.html . Lots of my trains were from the early 90s and therefore didn't have any form of decoder in. A few later models indeed do have the option to have a decoder plug directly in.
