  • Gday again all you beautiful people , How has your week been? Good I'm hoping . Now today i melt down a heap of dug up scrap that was found in the South West Of Western Australia not far from my house. Thanks to my good Mate Jason for donating it all. It took a few goes to get all the impurities out but i think the Big Bar turned out awesome.

    HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
    I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

    Hey there all you sensational subs how are you all? I can’t believe how fast these weeks are going, But every week that passes theres a new BigStackD video to watch . Super simple today where I melt down a heap of buried metals that were dug up in the bush around near where I live. There was sooo much slag in this it was unbelievable but at the end of the day I got myself an awesome piece of buried treasure to add to the stack.
    Now do you guys like these longer videos or do you prefer the 11-12 minute videos? I will be putting a poll out this week about this asking your preferred length of video time as I would be super curious . Take care everyone and see you all next week And have a great weekend😁👋🏻

    For making cleanup easier you could build a cyclone seperator to hook up to your vaccuum. It seperates out any solid stuff (even dust) and collects it in a bucket, leaving only the finest dust to go into the vacuum itself. I built one from cheap materials and an extra vacuum hose I got from the garbage for collecting chips and dust from my CNC router, works like a charm.

I do not recall seeing any part of his face *directly* viewed by the camera in any of his many other awesome videos. Sure, might catch a glimpse of his reflection after sanding/polishing the ingots, but he's consistently wearing a mask or respirator, not like here where it's been directly filmed.

    I'd wager that a lot of the slag you're getting with these brass melts is zinc oxide, a lot of flux added to the cruciple before the melt might help create a barrier that floats on top of the metal.

    Aw you should have kept that large ass buckle, it could have been a decent coolector piece, or shit a funktional buckle.
    I just wanted to say as someone from on the opposite side of the world, the melting and shiny shiny metal is just a distraction from the dogs. Ingot and bullion forever

    Definitely trash to treasure!👍So many thingies to melt, so little time 😂
    It's funny to me that you complain about your shop being "messy" I've never seen a guy keep their work space so nice and neat! Sweeping up every bit of dust etc wish my guy was half as tidy lol

    Cant believe you haven't gotten yourself a milling machine yet. Just get a used bridgeport or something, and a facemill, and you can stop sanding, grinding, and collecting dust! Instead just plop it down in a vice, mill it on all sides, collect the chips for easy remelt. Don't need coolant or anything for brass, copper and aluminium, since it machines pretty easily.

    13:08 did those dirty metals ....... extended heating and cooling cycle .......... or the borax put a hurting on your crucibles? Or is that damage just normal consumable expectations

    • @vikingo3550
      @vikingo3550 2 роки тому

      I go with normal lifecycle of a crucible. The constant heating and cooling cycles, as you said, end for cracking it. Of course how you treat them matters, but he really cares about his crucibles.

    Would it be possible to melt let’s say
    Copper
    And
    Brass in two separate furnaces and pour it into the same mold at the same time and see what comes out of it ?

    • @somejoe7777
      @somejoe7777 2 роки тому

      You can, but most brass is 55-65% copper already (the rest is zinc). Adding additional copper just gives you another version of brass that will be more of a yellow color, and more ductile.

    One suggestion : saw on another site that they use a small cast iron skillet to collect the slag (seems easier to clean up and has a handle 😉 ).
