Making Damascus steel from fishing hooks.

- Making a blade from 1500 pieces of fish hooks. About removing the container: In some cases, I prefer not to remove the container. The container protects the valuable material and if there are cavities left, they will easily weld during the second welding. Before the second welding, I grind the container off the adjoining surfaces. The rest of the container with a thickness of 2 mm, during the first welding, lengthens four times, becomes 0.5 mm, but due to a decrease in the cross-section by 2.5 times, the thickness is 1.25 mm of which some thickness burns out. In the second welding, with an elongation of four times, the thickness is 0.31 mm, with an increase in width of 1.75 times, the thickness of the container is 0.18 mm, and some part burns out. In my experience, there is almost no container until the end of forging.

On my patreon page, I began to explain the processes and secrets of my work. Topics already covered:
1. Why do I add pepper to container Damascus steel.
2. What do I sprinkle? Flux and its composition.
3. How do I remove the container from the workpiece (container Damascus steel).
4. Why am I drilling a hole in a container.
5. Why do I sweep away the dross from the anvil with my hand.
6. Why do I first forge some blanks on a tree.
7. In what and why do I soak the blank before forging.
8. In which granules do I place the workpiece after forging.
9. What kind of white powder do I pour into the container.

Just an FYI, someone's been stealing your videos and showing them as their own on Facebook. A lot of people recognize your work and have been calling them out for it, but I thought you should know.

Рыбаки его убьют)))
@@MrOldclunker one, how do you think the fish hooks were made in the first place? Two, the fact that he worked the fish hooks into ANY shape means that the metal is indeed workable. If you're going to play the pedant, at least be factually accurate.
You beat me to the punch. I was just about to do this.

One thing other thing I enjoy about these videos is not just the crafting part, but the kind of tea this guy makes.

I'm convinced that you could turn a cheeseburger into a Damascus blade lol your work seriously top-tier man. Always gorgeous pieces. The blades you create deserve to be displayed like a priceless work of art. Hope you're still doing well buddy, everyone of your countrymen are in my family's thoughts and prayers.
It’s technically possible you would just need a lot of cheeseburgers

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
Shurap seriously makes some of the most incredible damascus, he's so far ahead of the pack it's nuts.

Damn. That ending where it says "Sumy, Ukraine" is fucking heart breaking. I hope this man is ok.
He isn’t
@Apollyon yeah I know it was before the invasion. That's the point and that's the message. It was just a regular place with regular people doing regular stuff. All I knew of Sumy was from war footage. This video shows how horrible that situation really is. It unwittingly provided perspective.

I never thought about fish hooks. That came out looking very unique. The dagger design is pretty kool too.
Wow wow Wow. Making something and using the press to compact it all down in the canister is absolutely genius. I would have never done that until now!!!! Thank you
That would be how canister Damascus works, though technically what he's making is pattern-welded steel. True Damascus is hard to come by, and even harder to make

I love that you protected your camera and our eyes from the arc flash. I appreciate that as a welder
Am i the only one wondering how in blazes can a camera matrix record the full-brim electic arc without burning right off? And how regular LCD displays we're watching it from can actually damage your eyes like that?
The thought that you can actually damage your eyes by looking at a recording of that arc becomes epidemic =\
@@vizanarkonin4475 nope you aint the only one, I was wondering the same thing. This guy probably wears a bullet proof vest when watching gun battles on TV.
its good to protect his camera gear
@@davet80000 Nope. You won't see anything otherwise - that's pretty much why everyone use that glass with a camera. Not to protect the matrix, and most certainly not to protect viewer's eyes.
If you have a camera with specialty quartz lens (which won't filter out rough UV radiation from the arc) and it doesn't have automatic sensitivity corrector (how ancient must camera be to not have it, tho), then yeah - you have a good chance to kill that poor matrix.
Any decent modern camera - hell, even the ones built in the phones - won't have any issues with the arc, except for everything's being flashed out on the recording, but that's a whole different story, lol
@@vizanarkonin4475 How bright do you think an LCD screen can go? Do you think a call of duty flash bang can actually daze you for a while? hahahahahhaa
Восхитительная работа 👍👌🤝

That is just simply a beautiful blade.
Hermoso trabajo 👌
I love that if you take a few seconds to look closer at the damascus pattern you def can tell it's fish hooks.
Another outstanding job! Congrats.
That’s a beautiful blade!
Are the fish hooks stainless steel? If they are stainless does it make a big difference when it comes to heat treating the knife? All of the stainless heat treat recipes I've seen seem very hard to do with a forge vs having a specific heat treating over like what you use for the tempering process. Either way the blade looks great and I really enjoyed seeing you do a dagger like build with this blade. I love your normal style of blades buts it nice to see a different style from time to time. Thanks for sharing this beauty with us.

These sealed box forge always remind me of that one Forged in Fire episode where the show provided the bladesmiths with a ready made sealed box to create a Damascus knife and all of them spent AN HOUR disassembling the box to take the contents out 🤦♂️
The natural pattern is amazing!
Now, I'm pretty sure a lot of you have watched the show Forged in Fire. Sometimes I think that show does the blade makers an injustice. I know it's a contest to try and put the contestants out of their element and under pressure. But this is what happens when you let the artist do what he is comfortable doing and work at his pace. Sheer artistry.
That is a beautiful blade. Excellent work.

@@williamdougie6213 so ya said. Repeatedly. It's quite nice when doing it yourself, imo. When I got started it only cost me, roughly, 400$... and that was paying -2$/lb for the anvil as well. I built my own forge and burners.
Now days, as my nephew has begun "apprenticing" with me, it ran about 1800$ to get everything to start him off, including his own - new - anvil. We built him his own forge, of course. _(my anvil is from 1897, and I have resurfaced it numerous times as opposed to buying a new anvil... not a fan of the alloy anvils, personally.)_ Granted... I only grabbed him a basic set of fullers and horn tools - as well as two hammers. His first job was making three sets of tongs for himself, so... that had only cost scrap. 100% of the tools you need for forging you can, well, forge. The grinders and such are nice, but not _needed._ It's extremely good practice to make your own tools... they also tend to be fitted for you, and the jobs you do. Which is a plus.
