Just seen this, as I watched the magnificent "Ice Cold in Alex" last night! I am seriously considering getting the kit as the subject is so important to the story.
You have made a lovely job of the vehicle, Gary. Well done!
WOOF!WOOF! fantastic Gary looks great..only one thing missing is the loudspeaker
A cracking build, agree with your comments, I build for fun, we all make kits to the best of our abilities, nothing I’ve made will ever be competition quality, I build for enjoyment.
Cheers Robert!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching you build this ambulance model, I confess I'm very impressed by the ease it assembled because my experience of airfix 1/35 vehicles left me vowing to never buy another because of the poor quality of the moulding. I admit to being disabled in my left hand but I persevered for weeks trying to get get the darn thing to square up (it was a land rover set) I made so many minor adjustments using sand paper, files and my trusty craft knife I eventually got so fed up I literally chucked the whole lot in a box where it remains to this day. This was about 4/5 years ago now but having watched how well your model components went together I might just swallow my disgust and treat myself to one of these kits. I've seen the film lots of times and admit it is one of my favourite ww2 movies I may even be inspired to build a diorama and use some of the land rover bits lol great video thank you 👍
Thanks mate - it really does go together very well and is a pretty good representation of the Katy (there are faults, but there always are!) I'd recommend it, just take it easy and it'll be good!
Gary, hopefully you build models to have fun and display. Who needs judges?
I build models for fun and to show people how I did it and any mistakes/pitfalls they can avoid. I do have some of them on display, but not many!
My hart was in my mouth with the roof decal nice one Gary . Regards Gav.
Cheers Gav - thankfully although it is flimsy it isn't fragile so will take a lot of gentle 'persuasion' around the roof!
Nicely built model mate, I used to show my work, but the should of done this and should of done that killed it for me, now I build models for me 😉👍
Thanks Tim! Always build models for you, mate, it's the only way!
Nice one Gary. looked a fun build. Cheers Bob
Cheers Bob, it grew on me!
The only metric that matters with a model, or any hobby, is whether you are happy with the result. If you are, then criticism doesn't matter. Constructive tips yes, destructive criticism, no.
Couldn't agree more.
Great job. Thanks. Now we just need an after-market company to provide a 1/35 Harry Andrews and Sylvia Syms.
I've been looking all over, can't find one yet (or even a 3d file I can get to send to a printer somewhere) but I'm sure someone will do a set or two...
Don't forget Poel's sneaky satchel!
very impressive result, with the weathering lifting her up many levels. The diorama will be perfect to show off this beaut.
Thanks Tony!
I think it looks awesome. The rivet counters be dammed! You build it your way! Weathering looks great! Thanks for sharing Gary. 😎🇨🇦
Thanks Peter, always glad if you like a build!
@@garys_stuff I like all of your builds! 😎🇨🇦
@@petermerz2704 and that's why Peter is the real "Legend" @Gary's Stuff 👍😜☕
I think the clips you stated were for shovels etc are rifle clips, so the inside should be leather covered. Medics did/do carry weapons for self defence and patient defence. I must have a go at that model.
Hi John, yes I think you're right. Having looked at the Gecko kit does come with a couple of Lee Enfields - the shovel is stowed inside the cabin roof. For "Ice Cold" the rifles were missing.
Nice work Gary, your persistence paid off with the decals.
Thanks 👍 Found some more to add - see the next episode!
That's damned good for a first vehicle model! :)
Thanks Julian - pretty happy I must admit!
Super build and wonderful vehicle
Thanks mate!
Gary my name is Gordon I live in Eastern Germany just near the Polish border . My wife is actually Polish and after living in Felixstowe for 3,5 years we decided to move right back over here so Anna could be close to her relatives.
@@garys_stuff I build 1/32 scale ww2 aircraft models right now but in the past have made all different types and scales, also rc-models. My dad always had model railways and so I've also received some of his railway models and hardware all in 00 gauge.
Really good video showing in detail the build which I found very useful. Not really into vehicles but after watching this I’m tempted to give one a go. Many thanks.
Thanks David!
Looks good Gary, nice work.
Very well done,Gary. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and found your calm delivery of the build process nice to follow along with. I don't understand why Airfix didn't mould the roof vents as two separate parts, with flanges. This would allow for one big disc 'decal',and two for colour matched vent decals. The yellow disc is a vehicle weight classification for bridge crossing and shipping, not a divisional mark. Thanks for showing and I look forward to seeing your diorama 👍😎Pete 🤓. p.s. I stayed till the end,I know your secret👍😃well done
Thanks Pete! Just checking the divisional markings in the movie - they are dulled down versions of what Airfix provide so I'll add them. Interesting about the weight classification as it is different for some of the schemes - maybe on Home service they didn't carry as much water and stuff so were a bit lighter?
Weathering rule of thumb.
If the vehicle is on tarmac or hard ground, the tread should be clean with weathering on the sidewalls.
If the vehicle is on soft ground or mud, the terrain sticks to the tread area with less -- or dusting -- on the sidewalls.
Cheers!
Cheers Randy! I will bear it in mind. What about sand as it's dry?
@@garys_stuff Sand can be hard -- like Malcolm Campbell in Bluebird at Daytona Beach -' or it can be sticky and muddy. It also depends on the speed of movement -- centrifugal force will throw off mud at speed. Wet sand will be darker than dry sand but careful about using gloss to look wet -- a little goes a long way.
A viewer will implicitly infer the terrain from how the vehicle is weathered -- it's all about telling a story in the viewer's head.
Well done Gaz, lovely job from start to finish, just stick it on a piece of sand paper and it will look the part. HaHa.....no seriously a very good job.🇬🇧🤗
Cheers Dean. Wish I'd thought of sandpaper, would have saved myself loads of time...!!
Fantastic build as always Gary
Thanks Graham!
Lovely job!
Will be back to see the dio build!
See you then!!! Cheers Darren!
Great build
Really nice build Gary, can't wait to see the diorama, i might just have a long cold one.
You and me both! Cheers Mel!
Nicely done, Gary! You built systematically and it finished up well.
For small etched parts I often put cello tape on the back so the part doesn't go walkabout when it's cut. The bridging disc bracket shows exactly what etched parts add to a build.
Can't wait for the diorama!
Thanks Randy! Good tip with the tape on the back! I hope the Gecko is as forgiving...
Be nice if the after market industry come up with an engine and open covers for this kit
Or get the Gecko one as it comes with an engine and a four-piece bonnet...
Gary that number on the yellow disc is actually a Bridge weight restriction.
That's what i love about doing these videos, you learn something all the time. The HMQ Katy has a '4' on the badge, so guess is lighter due to the lack of medical stuff, water, etc.
fantastic as always Gary !!!
Cheers Shaun!
great build keep up the good work
Cheers Stephen!
Great looking build Gary,! It's a winner in my books. Looks like you did have some fun putting it all together, and that's what is important.
I did, after a shaky start it did grow on me. I may be a convert to 1/35!!!
Looking great Gary
Cheers Mark!
Lovely build Gary. Looking at your Amazon link reminded me to buy some ultra thin cement!
Thanks Nigel! One of the better things to own, ultra-thin!
It looks good to me Gary
Thanks John!
Well done mate. We build for ourselves. If we are happy that's all that matters.
Here, here! Thanks Mark
Brilliant work.
Thanks mate!
Stick a square of styrene over the top over the air vents as on the real vehicle there is a pannal covering them luvers on top you shouldn't see them.
greetings from holland well done super video.
Thanks Mario!
Thanks!
Thank you Peter!
@@garys_stuff see, he's the Legend!!
Gary's Stuff thank you especially for showing the tools and advice on doing the Photo - Etch. Great and straight forward advice. Watched a couple of other modeller video's and it left me with feeling complete dread of doing photo etch and thinking I have to buy some really expensive tools to do PE.
Thanks Barry - you do need a few basics, the best is a spare ceramic tile to cut on because you get a really good edge that way. If you are left with any bits on the edge of the piece, hold it between the jaws of a pair of pliers until the extra bit is only just poking above the jaws and use a small file or sandpaper to get rid of it. But I've not had any problems so far with getting a very close cut. Might be a different story with the Gecko kit and the huge amount of PE it has!!!
@@garys_stuff thank you
Great job on the model
Thanks Shawn!
@@garys_stuff you are welcome looking for One myself it's a toss up between airfix and gecko
Really nice build and video
Thanks Stephen!
Impressive impressionism. Looking forward to seeing the Katy in its diorama.
Thanks mate - you and me both!!
Can I suggest with large and / or geometric decals like the red crosses and circles, painting them on instead? The original decal could be used to get the size, then a compass to draw a circle for a template, mask the white circle off and paint the cross. Probably less painful than the thin decals.
Good plan - probably better for keeping some of the detail too. And the vents would colour match the red of the cross. I'm just not so good at masking off circles!!
@@garys_stuff Nor am I :) Use a compass to draw the circle on a thin sheet of card / paper then cut out the circle and use the cutout as a template. Then mask off the red cross :) Even I couldn't mess up masking a cross.. well probably not :)
looks amazing
Thanks Andy!
Tip I'd give is not to use black over the light paint more a brown or grey blacks to much for the light paint or even a black and brown mix a grey is good for ochar sand tones but we Are all learning on each build and using a gloss or semi gloss is fine for pannal line washes but then you can't blend on it afterwards for more weather so give it a matt coat after your gloss for your washes and definitely pigments for the grip so it doesn't just run off! The blending you can get on a matt coat is superb it took me a while to figure this out for myself so if I can give anyone that tip to help along the way I'm only to happy!
Cool tips, thanks. I think the choice of wash is also determined by the scale sometimes - I know my 18mm figures need black because the contrast is better to see at a distance.
What you keep calling a divisional plate is more likely a bridge plate, stating the vehicle is 5 tones, you can view on certain bridges weight limits for two way traffic or heavier weight one way traffic. Look up street view of the canal bridge in Aldershot, Queen,s Ave. There it shows a yellow plate, 30 two way or 50 one way.
Also you where correct in resting the mud guard against the rectangular storage box, as that is fixed to the vehicle & the cross bar would be hinged to open & slide out the box/container 👍🏻
Thanks Glenn - a few people spotted that gaffe. I think my confusion came from the desert Katy and the Camberley Katy having different badges, but I suspect that loading up a Katy as an operational ambulance with medical supplies, water etc. pushes it into a higher weight band (5 instead of 4).
I have built the whole chassis before I painted,
Long as it works it doesn't matter in what order you do it! It's just a habit of mine...!
Gary, you did a magnificent job with the Katy, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it, Ralph! Thanks!
I like to use a kitchen chop board for my PE worked perfectly for years I just hate the blade slipping or snapping and pinging sometimes it doesn't bend your PE whatever and safer as I've had a couple accidents on a tile!
What is the chopping board made of?
Your delivery and skill and especially your camera work and close ups improve every time. Not going to do mine just yet as keep filling the pint glass up, and struggling with a trumpeter nightmare. How you do it at the moment is just right. Good stuff
Cheers Geoffrey!
Great build Gary. I was going to get the Gecko version, but the Airfix comes up so well, I have had a change of mind. Thinking about it my carpet monster would probably get most of the Gecko PE anyway. Also, good rant on the media know alls . There are plenty of these cretins about. Model on and enjoy. Regards, Mike.
Cheers Mike - the Gecko is a bit intimidating but is fantastically detailed. I'll do it in a week or two....! The Airfix kit is good of itself, without the Gecko so close a price point it wouldn't be a question. Depends on how happy you are making 1/35 vehicles that as you to cut lengths of radiator hose (supplied). Might make a plane in the meantime, after which time there could even be some figures for another diorama!
Nice!
Great job I love how it came out. Thank you for the awesome videos. Can't wait to see diorama for this
Cheers Sydney!
Really enjoying the build as ever. To me your level of detail is spot on. Keep it up. Many thanks!
Thanks Mike!
Another really interesting video, I look forward to seeing the diorama.
You and me both! Cheers John!
Great work as always Gary. Really looking forward to seeing how it looks on the diarama. 👍👏
Cheers Rob!
Great build Gary! I’ve just bought this kit. If it comes out half as good as yours, I’ll be very happy..
It's a lovely build, just take your time with it and it will look amazing, i'm sure!
Nice one Gary👍
Thanks 👍
Sweet Katy ! Nice one Sir !
Cheers Fred!
Nicely done there Gary👍, really looking forward to the diorama.
Yeah, me too....!! Thanks!
Very nicel job.
Thank you very much!
Very nice job Gary. This is going to be my first 1/35 vehicle as well so I really appreciate the advice and guidance.
Cheers Ian. Shouldn't have any major problems with it and it seems to go together very well.
Absolutely stunning build Gary. Might have inspired me to get one myself. 👍. Keep up the great work.
Cheers trevor!
Once again a fabulous video, layed back approach is just a joy to watch.
Oh and the home made super glue applicator..... Great stuff, I made one myself.
Thanks Gary.
Thanks Paul! Glad you liked the tip!
Your build looks great. Your videos are good examples of perseverance. I use them as motivation for my builds so I don't give up. It takes me a while to finish builds as I'm time limited.
That's nice to know mate! Builds can take ages but there's no need to give up on them. Back when I was working it would take me three or four weeks for a 1/72 aeroplane at least! I can only keep up a faster rate because I'm a man of (ahem...) leisure. But even then other things demand time and I have to leave a kit alone for a while, itching to get back but knowing other things have to take priority. Take things at your own pace and enjoy the time you have doing a build! Cheers Michael!
Another stupendous build. Always impresses me how you take what the manufacturer gives and make a tremendous representation of the subject. No frills, just a great build, in a short period of time. Agreed. If you have some helpful suggestions, put forth in a gentlelmanly and respectful manner, get on with it. If you choose to be demeaning and hatefull, maybe consider seeking therapy to address your inferiority complex and anger issues. Rant over. Carry on.
Good rant, my friend! Cheers!
Great build Gary, looking forward to getting one.. Interested in this base too.. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure - I'm going for a simple base as I don't want to over complicate things. Or create too much work for myself of course!!
I think that with a small drill and a bit of steel wire (such as paper clip) one could do working hinges for the rear doors. You could place them open or closed however you wanted. And they would not break off whenever someone breathed on them too hard ;)
Yes, in theory but I think it would have to be smaller than a paper clip - somewhere around 0.1 or 0.2mm wire. And they wouldn't break when someone says "ooh, what's inside?" and tries to open the door....
I've just done the Gecko one in an ATS diorama with the Tamiya Tilly and the Princess like the old photo's had to change the figure up slightly but an absolute dream of a kit! Can't wait for the early now! Airfix has another another aswell sort of a late Katy version version with the sand mats etc in the front it's strange 🤔
thank you. Been trying to get back into modelling and realised my "weathering" and washes are ham fisted...look like cr@p. I see now the reason is I don't dilute anywhere near enough. Am inpsired to try again.
For the desert Katy you might want to try a brown wash rather than black as well. Remember it's easy to go back and add to a wash, not so easy to get rid of it!
Airfix just announced another version it's like a late katy version with the sand mats on the front of katy it has on it that you'll be able to Rob and use on this version as there missing from the front fenders it's certainly a strange one there doing g next but it's definitely a late in the Africa campaign?
The transparency sprue has windows for the enclosed cab version of the Austin truck as well...
There is another version, an early war k2y that has round vents
Interesting - maybe they will do that one which is why the roof is in two pieces....? There are transparencies on the sprue for a closed cab as well.
I wonder if the photo etch on the air vents was designed to go on after the big decal, in order to make the decal fit a bit easier?
That is a very smart idea - sadly i don't think Airfix/Academy thought of that as they don't say anything about painting and applying the decal first, the PE is in among the build instructions. But that would be an answer to a lot of detail problems and would cover any minor tears around the vent. Genius idea!
@@garys_stuff Thanks! Often the kit designers are not the people creating the instructions, which is why you can sometimes find another way, like you did with the steering column.
'... why is that photo etched? It could have been moulded into the plastic.' You said that a split second after I thought it Gary. Probably budget related. Weird decisions usually are.
Or by committee...
@@garys_stuff Or there's alcohol involved *LOL* Possibly all three :)
It looks great Gary! I am going to go for the Alex model too... 😀 I hope it looks as good as yours! Did you say you were going to do the Gecko midel also at some point...?... Look forward to seeing the diorama, are you having some other film stars in it at well as 'Katy'... 😀
Yes I am going to do the Gecko too. No figures for either diorama yet as I haven't found any suitable in 1/35th, but I'll keep looking!!!
looks great would you ive never done a 1/35 before would you say its ok for a first kit
Yes I would - the instructions are easy enough to follow and it goes together pretty well. I would encourage you to dry fit everything, I do anyway but it will help with the Katy as now and a gain you might think "now, where do they mean that goes?" and by dry fitting it will become very clear. And watching my video I hope too! It's my first 1/35 vehicle too, so can't be too hard!!
Great vid Gary watched a few times as building this myself... Not impressed with the way the cab roof fits or main roof at the dry fit fiddle around stage ... Pity the rear doors don't open and close its one or the other. Usually build aircraft but done many Tamiya armour and vehicles can't say this kit is the best I've encountered fit wise. Many of your techniques use myself.. home made sanding sticks etc.
Glad you enjoyed it. Interesting notes about the fit, thanks!
Hope you don't think I meant fit on your model , yours looks fine.
@@jpwphotographicstudio3891 I know what you mean, don't worry!!!

People like that deserve all the bile they get thrown back at them. If you have that attitude, you'll always find a rivet-counter who is better than you. If you just admit that everyone does this hobby for different reasons, you soon learn there is rarely any 'right' or 'wrong'. I think your idea was inspired. Better off not listening to people like that mate.
@@garys_stuff I'm building the airfix Katie at the moment, look forward to your diorama,me,I going to put mine on a sand dune made of extruded foam,
Thanks for sharing. I have thoroughly enjoyed both this and Day 1. Having never made a diorama I rather want to have a go at this one so will wait for that episode with great interest. I note some aftermarket is beginning to arrive on the scene. I purchased a set of pillows, blankets and rucksacks from Red Zebra and they are going to work really well. I’d would like to build a set of the sand mats that are fitted to Katy at the front - any suggestions on how this could be done will be gratefully received.
OK, the sand mats are in part three! But what I did was got a length of 1cm wide paper, glued in some 12mm long styrene rods (I used 0.75mm) at intervals then glued another strip of paper on top. Rolled it all up and I got my sand mats. Not as fine detail as they should be, a bit chunky, but OK for me. Again, this might be something the aftermarket does... Also noticed the Ice Cold divisional markings are on the decal sheet but not referenced anywhere. I also made up a tow rope to dangle round the tow bar at the front and a map to sit next to the driver! I have put a photo on Twitter @Garys_stuff if you do that...
@@garys_stuff Thanks very much for your reply. I have looked on Twitter and the sand mats look good. I will have a play and see what I can do. My first thought is that because I build mostly ships, I have a heap of spare photoetch including the frets. If I cut that up instead of styrene I might get a finer detail. I saw they snuck in badge 21 on the decal sheet which I assume is the divisional badge as it can be seen very faintly in the Ice Cold stills. I have however no idea what division that is. Wikipedia tells me they were an RASC Motor Ambulance Company but my albeit, very quick research has failed to show what Division.
I missed your comment. What brush are you using to apply the decal fixative?
Hi Alan, it's a Derwent waterbrush, flat bristle version.
@@garys_stuff Thanks. Never knew they existed. Ideal for that application.
