Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
As soon as I saw "The Truth About..." in the title, I knew Shane was about to tell us a string of hilarious lies. I wasn't disappointed.

Shane’s excellence is a testament of his parents’ care, love, guidance, and nurturing.
His father is a keeper,this I know my son never was loved to that extent never did his dad change him or even felt the calling to work to provide housing,clothes shoes stuff boys need but they need love the most.and Shane and Hannah were and are treasured and loved.
Loved hearing more about Shane’s family. His Dad writing that poem is really inspirational. He wrote down the intentions for Shane’s life and then they proceeded from that mindset to bring up an amazing human being. Perhaps more of us should do/or have done that sort of thing with each of our children with or without any diagnosis. That was just awesome. Clearly both your parents have done a superb job with both of you. 🤗💖

Aww, you guys made me fall in love with Shane's parents now. I saw them in the original documentary about Shane too and they really are so inspiring and it's just incredible how their attitudes so obviously made it so that Shane could "laugh at his nightmare" and be the person he is. It's just such strong pure unconditional love and strength. And it really moves me. All children and especially disabled children deserve parents like that and I think that sadly a lot of parents aren't able to deal with their children's disabilities well and there are children out there abused or unsupported as well as dealing with the physical disability. Hopefully everything you are doing with LAMN will help more families to manage and the awareness you're raising will help parents to newly diagnosed children deal better as well. This is a fun video! I enjoyed hearing about Shane’s lovely parents. Talking with Shane’s Mom about tea, fresh meals, and nature sounds delightful. I think it is wonderful you are conscientious about your loved ones privacy and don’t use all of your visiting time asking to film them. Personal relationships are so important.
It always cracks me up that people are so concerned over Shane’s parents not being on camera. Not sure why people seem to think that if it’s not on UA-cam than it must not exist. You guys don’t show yourselves using the bathroom but we can all assume you do that! 😂

Yeah, not every UA-camr films their family and/ loved ones. Most of the youtubers I watch only ever feature themselves in their videos. They chose to be content creators not their family members.
I remember his parents back when Shane did that first video, telling the world about his condition. His dad was super caring, positive, and really humorous. I think that video was how Hannah found out about Shane.
Of course, there are some people here who *probably* think that his entire family is paid actors, and Hannah's family is the same! 😄😄😄

And Hannah gets to reap the benefits as well! So 4 fabulous parents raised 2 fabulous UA-camrs who are making an amazing difference in the world! ❤❤❤

I always thought that Shane's parents may just not want to be on camera, which is totally understandable! Among your other reasons. Its kinda normal to not like being on camera, or at least I know plenty of people who dont like being on camera etc, same with me.

Yes, honestly, people should think first if they would be comfortable with a camera shoved in their face. Especially if you're at your own home just having a good time and then someone decides to film every moment of it and put it up on the Internet. Hannah and Shane, like many youtubers, have chosen this lifestyle but that doesn't mean that their families and friends also choose this lifestyle. I personally would not be comfortable with someone vlogging me around my house.

@@margretrand8769 I think people just wanted a video of them maybe talking about raising Shane and how was their life changed with his diagnosis. Maybe it will help future parents or caregivers that now deal with someone with some kind of disability. So maybe not vlogging them but just one video of their experience. It would be cool.
Oh yes! I kind of have a crush on Shane's dad. He just seems so friendly. I've liked him ever since I saw him on the first video when Shane was a kid.
Shane it is such a blessing to come from a close and loving family. This is what people need in both happy and sad times. You parents are loving and caring but the way you both talked about your parents showed that this is mutual.

Seeing this a year late but for you two and your families I am angry at the mean people that say negative things so you cannot show extended family in joy and happiness as you share your beautiful harmonious lives on your various platforms enjoying and enlightening so many hundreds of thousands if not over a million people.

Shane's parents sound amazing! I respect your parents for not wanting to be on camera. It's hard to be on camera all the time. I have to go on zoom meetings for my job and sometimes I don't want to be on camera.
I think it's awesome that you love family enough to respect that not everyone wants to be in your vlogs and that you clearly define the private part of your lives from the public. Sometimes it can be a very fine line between the two but you have done fantastic about keeping what you don't want to share private for yourselves. I bet your family appreciates it as well. As you said. Not everyone is comfortable being in videos that everyone and their uncle can see.

I used to work for the ARC - Advocate for the Rights of Citizens with Disabilities. I drove the dial a ride. I drove my clients to the mall and took them all shopping, but when we came back to the van in the red stripe area for the lift to go down on was blocked with a mini sports car. Everyone, but one was able to still get in the van, but we had someone who was in a wheelchair and could not get in. So what I did is lowered the lift to right above the sports car. It was hovering about one inch from the roof the of the car. Then we searched for the security guy at the mall. Then we waited until the man showed up. He was given a ticket by the police officer and a chewing out. Then I had him go an apologies to my friend in the wheel chair. I still had that heavy heavy lift hoovering on top of his hood of his car. His eyes were so wide and he was so nervous. He was begging me to get the lift out of the way. I hope he learned his lesson.

There's actually a deck of cards out there that you can request for free, that shows why parking incorrectly in or near a handicapped spot isn't ok. You choose the example from the deck of cards for each specific time, and leave it on their windshield. It simply educates people without the confrontation.

I can only imagine how heartbroken Shane's family must be after seeing the documentary that he is so far away but on a second note they must be happy with shane and hanna's quality of life and their work. They both are in good hands and are great adults finding their way through life with a lot of adventures. One thing is for sure, both sets of parents are very proud of them and they are very loved.

@@joro241 Well, they have Hannah's mom on a lot and sometimes dad. So I guess it's on a case by case basis but yeah, generally they keep other family out probably mostly for the trolls.

I recall early on, videos of Shane's parents when he was still living at home... They moved me to tears... Dad lifting Shane from bed, carrying him.... and his candid words about his son's genetic disease.
I recall feeling that Both of Shane's parents are incredible people... and his brother is phenomenal!
It would be lovely to hear about Mom's food and Dad's quick wit, even without seeing them if they are camera shy.... it's only a suggestion.....
Liz is such an integral part of the channel and seeing Hannah's parents from time to time feels comforting.... and that's the way it feels to me when Shane's parents are included....

I have to say I pride myself on not delving into others private lives. But, what the heck, you're public! LOL😂And that brings me to my point. It is absolutely none of my business what kind of relationship you two have with Shane's parents. That said, I was surprised at my relief when I read the title of this video and realized that their absence in videos and just being mentioned at all had been worrying me.🤔It was not anything I remember consciously questioning but somewhere in the recesses of my mind apparently it bugged me. During this video I realized why. You two are such wonderful people and I have grown to love you like family. I realized it was very important to me that everything in your world is as happy as it possibly can be. The niggling doubt that maybe the relationship with Shane's parents wasn't as it should be made me sad. So, let me just say that I'm so relieved and happy that they are great people and that you guys are good together. Thank you for that. I especially enjoyed seeing the photo of them at your wedding. Their facial expressions and body language tell the story of both the personalities you described. Now I feel I know them a little better and it makes the picture of your lives complete. Great video!
That was very nice to share more about your parents. They seem like incredibly lovely and positive people....like the kind of people you WANT and NEED in your life. As a parent of a son with severe developmental disabilities my self, our families have difficulties like all families, maybe not the same difficulties, but we also have lots of good times and appreciations that typical families rarely get to experience. In that way we are lucky.

I used to work with children who were in wheelchairs, and one time I had to take a student to a store. I parked in a wheelchair accessible parking space. When I came back out, someone had parked too close to the van. I had to park my student in a safe spot, and back my van out so that I could use the ramps so he could get in. That's not a comfortable feeling when you are responsible for another person.

I can just know that his parents sleep really good at night knowing that Shane is doing great in life and that he is really loved.

Hi guys, I have looked in to Story Worth and I love the concept the one thing that I don't understand is Who gets the final bound book? Is is the author or the gift giver?

Honestly it never crossed my mind, as I remember Shane said he came from Pennsylvania and you both live in Minneapolis area, next door to GB WI. Having traveled alot by bus i know the distances involved.
To me Shane is(you are) a living example of his parents, just like I am of mine. My mom was pretty much anti-tech, and my dad was the opposite, but I know both would not have wanted to be on tribe video for their own reasons. So eye roll to those who ask too much.

I watch UA-cam videos, and for the most part enjoy them. I sometimes wonder, don’t they ever get tired of filming? Especially the ones with children and constant pranks. I’ve never thought that about Squirmy & Grubs or why family members or friends are not included, because I would not want a camera constantly shoved in my face as I’m not comfortable being photographed or filmed. I don’t recall any prank videos from Shane & Hannah.
So many things to love about this video. The least of which was the plant 🪴 perfectly framing Shane’s head as he tells us his parents are cannibals.
