This album gets a lot of hate, but that's because it's not understood, this sounds wounded, tragic, beautiful, it's pretty much like the self titled, the production reflects a lot of the emotion, it's a different type of pain, I love combo tracks like Acid Hologram-Doomed User-Geometric Headdress

Your observations are pretty spot on. Deftones, specifically Chino and Stef (guitarist), are band that have been together for 30 years and they’re like a family and sometimes when there is a member in that family that is kind of checked out and not fully committed, it shows in the work. Stef has admitted during the press for Ohms that he just wasn’t in the right place mentally and was having his own issues in his personal life and in the band. He probably felt he wasn’t being heard or his vision wasn’t being fully realized. This also happened during SNW with Chino pretty much checking himself out of the band and doing his own side project and drugs. So many people didn’t “get” SNW at the time of its release and really went hard on it. But here we’re are almost 20 years since SNW’s release and people have come around to it and it’s found new fans, putting it almost up at the top of their best albums, more so than S/T.
Back to what you’ve said about experimentation- this album comes after 2 highly-regarded albums they recorded in their new era with Sergio (bassist) and they probably felt like doing something new. Gore has this almost-80s sound to it which is totally different from the typical “deftones sound”. I feel like you should give a track from Ohms a listen now that you’ve heard tracks from all the other albums to see if your analysis is correct :) I’d recommend a listen to the song Ohms or Genesis

I love this song but for years I couldn't listen to it because it describes my brother who wasted his life with drug abuse. The pain is real

They got Jerry Cantrell to come in and lay down a solo for the song. Great song and the next song Rubicon is just as good. IMO. When Ohms came out they they were back at the top. Genesis is a great opener song, Urantia is Stephen Carpenter putting back those heavy, catchy riffs, This link is Dead just a great song and Closer song Ohms is just a good song , guitar work is solid and just In all a great comeback album.

It’s pretty well known that the guitarist, Stephen Carpenter, wasn’t all-in on this album. Additionally, the mix for this one wasn’t up to Deftones standards in the eyes of many. It has some amazing tracks, but feels like it could have been mixed better in many places.
