Road to Rank 1 - Catan Ranked

- The second installment of the Road to Rank 1 series is back! Last time, we ended up as Rank 44, and in this game we take on some tough, tough competition to try and move even closer to our goal of Rank 1.
Friendly reminder that Development cards are once per turn, so Dylan could not have won a turn sooner with YOP as he played Knight already.
Great to see you're making more videos again. Keep it up and I'll keep watching ;)
Love to see this, you’re very good at evaluating a position and explaining it to people who don’t have as much knowledge as you. Keep it up.
The "I spent my wheat" trick is what we call plausible deniability. A manipulation but not a lie technically.
i think the problem is that when your not in person, from the other players perspective they are the same thing
@@olivermahon5618 yeah it's a trick, like mono trick, well within the rules and not morally wrong IMO. It's a grey area which will always be exploited in any highly competitive setup.
Not really, the phrasing implies having spent all the wheat as opposed to just some of it. If you pull this kind of thing in a real life negotiation it's going to be consistently perceived as dealing in bad faith.
@@thetable7660 He didn't say he spent all his wheat.
I heard to it referred as misrepresenting the truth
23:04 - I don't think the opponents were misevaluating the position. Green's second dev is fresh so it isn't necessarily a vp. In the likely case it isn't a vp, getting their 10th point will be pretty difficult. You on the other hand have 3 devs. From their pov you could 2 vps and a knight and win on your turn. Your for sure getting army on your turn for 8 points, and you have a close settlement spot with 2 devs still. Sometimes your internal bias causes you to think your opponents are making mistakes when they're actually just rightfully stealing from you.
Love your videos dylan!! They make my day! So glad you are posting again and I love how the videos are casual :)
Thank you for these videos. I always wanted to play Catan but was afraid to join an established group and get destroyed while learning. Looking forward to beginning playing. This is a great starting point for me so I can gain some familiarity with more advanced mechanics with explanation.
I need to point out that I had zero knowledge of how to play the game 12 hours ago but was watching your vids at work and I understand everything you are explaining.
Nice win Dylan. You read and played the position very well.
Lovin the consistent uploads!!
Couldn't you have won a turn sooner if you took 2 wood with the yop, to take road? Great vid! Started playing thanks to you!
No, he already played a knight in this turn
@@interia2812 oh yeah ur right thanks
I think your title is clickbait. You say Road to Rank 1 but you rarely ever Road.
More correct would be Army to Rank 1.
you are very good at this game. one thing you could improve on Imo is you consistently piss off your opponents for very little gain it's obviously worth it sometimes but like in the instance of lying about having no wheat there was little upside as they just talked about how you were ahead so it was highly probable they were going to rob you anyway
I agree, he has quite an arrogant tone which is the a great attitude to become great, but is easily annoying sometimes
Im new to this Game and i really love your commentary, speaking out your mind. No one else does that for this game, atleast as far as i could find. Great work! At the end i tried to understand your thought process for the Victory but the music played in to early so i couldnt really understand to well. Looking forward to more content. Youre amazing!
Do you ever post games that you lose? Also a great learning opportunity for yourself/viewers
Stay tuned :)) I won't spoil but we definitely will for the same reasons you are citing
I think there are a few videos he posted of that sort, I think the one with falcao winning from a horrid position is one
Loving all the uploads!
I love your videos cause I always learn just a little more about the game
make sure you upload losses too to keep the suspense for viewers :)
I agree, don’t be that guy that only posts wins. It’s tacky. But you’re a great player and should definitely try out coaching videos!
Yessss more videos thanks Dylan!
would love to see you post some games with coach that you come in 2nd or something. See what you’re doing wrong with coach that could help improve the 2nd place spot that seems to happen all the time.
tell your mom, tell your friends, let's get dylan to 100k!!
Loving the content btw!
Please never stop this video streak🫡
more please! (although the rank 1 guy giving advice vids are my favorite as of rn)
Rly glad u explain so much. Keep it up
Lovin the recent uploads and consistency!
Red made a massive blunder when they used their mono’d brick to build roads instead of buying devs
im glad you are uploading again
I feel like not trading the wheat for the settle at around 5ish minutes early cost you too much. The 6 rolled like 3 times in that cycle alone.
"It's not actually a lie since I said I spent my wheat... he caught me lying"
Good win - I think a large part of you winning was capitalizing off of red's mistakes. In his position at 16:40, there was an argument that he spend the brick buying dev cards (and anyway, he should've bought a dev card before building his city), but messing around with roads to go to a redundant 3:1 port (and at a low value 3 wheat hex at that), was not the way to win.
I think if he had instead focused more on his win condition of dev cards, he would've been able to put more pressure on Dylan or perhaps even beat him to army and green would've swept.
Keep it up, youll get there!
wohoooo moreeeee!!!
really like your setup here
I shed a tear when you lost out on that 8 wheat 🥲
Dylan at 10 min: "I can just ignore red"
Dylan at 15 min: "I think red is crushing us!"
Oh, how the turntables...
Another banger dylighted. Hope to get the chance to play you sometime. Used to play more with Hawkeye but he's no longer that active.
at 17:40 you choose to not play the Road Building, which would set you up perfectly to settle there next turn, considering red having only 1 card and 2 rolls to get the settlement with his lack of non ore production I doubt he'd get the cards for a settlement, I also don't think he'd get traded the settlement due to the mono.
I think there was still a risk red would trade for the settle. Also dylan could likely roll the wood he needs naturally opposed to using a rb and a yop to get it.
@@pyschologydude thing is the way he did it he gets a small reward risking the lack of ability to plow, the risk is minimal playing the RB
He didn't even say gg before the other players left!
Is there a world where your second settlement is 6 12 build to 9 12three for one? No wood but heaps of ore production and u have access to the ore port as well. Also triple shared 6 ore.
At 23:50 couldn't you have won by getting 2 wood with the Dev card then building two roads to take longest road?
No, he already played a knight in this turn
@@interia2812 you're right, my bad. Atleast he had a win in hand.
Good game very well played!
Couldn't you have won a turn earlier by YOPing into 2 wood and building longest road?
Knight was used that turn, so couldn’t yop
@@PresAhmadinejad oh true, i always forget about the 1 dev card per turn
At 23:50 didn't you have the win that turn with getting longest road? With year of plenty 🌲 into 2 roads around the 8 brick
Cool series idea
Hey Dylan, love your videos. What time do you stream? I'd love to be there for some of these amazing games!
Good to see you're back :) Unfortunatley all my friends dislike Catan :D
are you changing from posting on your “dylighted plays” to your normal (this) channel?
Yes, that is the plan for now. Sorry about the confusion!
Post one of thoose 46% games also please:)
Good video as usual and good luck
// TomasBrolin current no1
I think you nearly made a costly mistake. Could've won a turn earlier by just using year of plenty for 2 wood, and building 2 roads for longest road
Why cant i find him on the colonist rankings?
Could you show the stats after the game, that would be awesome
23:59 YOP - 2 wood -> build 2 roads near 8 or 10. Why to wait ? :D
He just played a knight that turn so can't play YOP
@@Ashwath-p8c ohhhh that makes sense
fat win
Why didn't you roadbuild to the 6 ore? much better for yuo than more brick ey + you might be able to get road.
when you won, you could have taken longest road with the Year of Plenty
24:00 you could have used year of plenty for two wood and won with road
Sometimes I think you would benefit from more diplomacy instead of analysis and conversation with viewers as much as I enjoy hearing your thoughts in videos. Was crucial to highlight how green could have two down VPs and was on the verge of longest road
Never going to accept Dylighted table talk at face value
Are you allowed to change your screen name and keep your account rank? I could’ve sworn your name was Record last video…
At 24 minutes you could have used ur dev card and got 2 wood and taken road for the win
Where do you play online Catan? :)
Check out my video here: ua-cam.com/video/NhCWX2nTmmg/v-deo.html and I talk about it towards the beginning! :)
what rank are you know?
I think you should buy two devs
Why didn't you take road before green? You had YOP and could have two roads?
Not the dirty monopoly! Sometimes the road to victory just ain't worth it if you're a worse person at the end... XD
Also you had win turn before winning turn right? You could’ve year of plenty the 2 wood and took longest road since green didn’t have it yet
Atleast correct the guy who called you liar in the chat.
In 23:55, you could've gotten 2 woods with year of plenty and build 2 roads to win the game with longest road.
sadly no
23:09 "They are going to do a mistake and rob from me anyway." -- Coming from the world of Chess, I am baffled with Catan players who are getting upset when their opponent is making a mistake. In Chess you are always happy to see your opponent making mistakes!
The thing is that mistakes make other opponents stronger. And while in chess there is only one opponent (which would be you), in Catan you either have two or three. So a mistake can easily make one opponent's position stronger - which was the case here.
@@elskuco in general when an opponent makes a mistake, this means that they are a weak player, so they have less chances of winning, and so I have more chances of winning. Which is great! Now when a particular mistake of an opponent makes another opponent stronger, this means that I failed to manipulate the weak opponent in a way that their mistakes are beneficial for myself. In other words it's my fault, and I should only blame and be upset with myself. The weak opponent did nothing wrong. They did their mistakes as they were expected, because they are a weak player, and I was nowhere near to redirect their mistakes to my advantage.
@@JohnSmithEx i dont think u got their point
@@yuhhh2851 please explain. Why should I wish that my opponents never make any mistake?
Sometimes it's good when your opponents make a mistake and rob you. For example, it could bring you under 8 cards, or they simply take a card from you that isn't very beneficial for them. Sometimes it's terrible though. Often times the player will incorrectly surmise that you are in a superior position, and they'll rob from you hurting your hand a lot when a different player is on the verge of winning. In this case it's in the player's best interest to steal from the person closest to winning in order to extend the game. It's the nature of a 4 player game. If it was a 2 player game then yes, your opponent making a mistake would result in an instant advantage for you.
Dude stop the lying. Look at how that same "logic" goes on in politics and corrupt business, how something is said that is technically true but only if some added stuff in hidden parentheses is understood to have been said as well but actually wasn't. That kind of lying is disastrous on bigger levels so why spread the use of it. You spent (some of) your wheat.
