I wish more people would watch this kind of Oranda goldfish videos. Orandas are extremely difficult to keep and have them stay alive. Because of their genetic modifications of breeding they are easily prone to disease. I’ve kept Orandas now for 7 years and learned the hard way that you need to keep on top of water changes and not feeding them too much. Orandas are really cute fish and have funky personalities. But it is so hard to take care of then because of their unique body shapes. I love my huge Orandas and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. But do your research first into what kind of goldfish you want because fancy goldfish are a lot more work than feeder goldfish.

I agree with all of that! I always thought any goldfish was a super easy beginner fish until I started keeping them.

The same can be said for most fish bred for looks while health is at the low end of the list. I tried keeping flowerhorns from people talking about how easy they too keep, but sadly, they are prone to MANY health issues such as hole in the head and Hexmita. Spent way too much trying to keep one, and 100% was not worth it. Fancy goldfish tend to have lots of genetic problems and usually are prone to bloat, ick, etc.

I absolutely loved my goldfish and had kept them for 15 years. Like you had mentioned I always had to baby them because they just need so much care. I found I was doing more "care" then enjoying them and I did rehome my goldfish. I also found at about the 4 year mark their health seemed to take a turn and were always getting sick with something. The only thing I can think of is that because they are so "modified" for 100's of years now their genetics ended up weaked in some way, or just so much inbreeding going on.
I traded my goldfish for parrot cichlid fish, yes I know another "modified" fish but I just can't get over their care diffence. Parrot fish for me are by far way more easier than goldfish, almost like they take care of themselves if you know what I mean.
I still love goldfish and always will but I will never keep them again.

Thanks for the comment! My experience is similar to yours when comparing Parrots to Goldfish. I'm hoping going forward keeping goldfish goes smoother but we'll see.

I have kept orandas, and I have experienced everything you say. When I look at the fish that are widely offered today, I think the problem has only become worse. Breeders breed too many fish for commercial purposes and dont look at health, and there is already a lot of inbreeding in these fish, and the shape of the orandas themselves are already a risk, which means that things are not getting any better. My best, healthiest orandas were one colorl and had a long slender bodys with long tails, not too large head growth, a more balanced fish/Japanese type of oranda, unfortunately what I see on the market today is almost only Orandas that are as tall as they are long with short tails and overly large heads.
I plan to breed fish myself in the future and will cross comet goldfish with orandas so that I hopefully get a long slender single-tailed fish with minimal head growth.

Great video! I've kept fancies for 30+ yrs..... and you're absolutely right about the popular misconception that goldies are easy to keep. I currently have a handicapped blue Oranda.....thankfully her much larger tank mates are great w her .Great advice , thank you.

Good lesson, do not stock up a lot of orandas or any goldfish especially common GFs (they are huge as kois).. They tend to grow very large and messy. They need atleast 10 gallons each and up or they'll get sick and die eventually. You need 1 gallon per 2 inches of your goldfish.

Manufacturer give contaminated food on occasion. We should test the food on wild chip fish. Before giving it to this adorable fish.

In my experience, Fancy Goldfish are like the pug/French bulldog of the fish world. They look cute and are just an amazing personal fish but they come with TONS of health issues. I found if you want a pretty Fancy goldfish without most of the health issues a Shubunkin is the best. The only main issue with em is that they do get pretty large just like comets but the colors are so beautiful just like most Fancy goldfish.

Thank you! Breeding stars will usually be on the gills/face. If you see it spread to other parts of the body then probably ich

How many did you keep in how big of a tank? Because I was thinking of getting two in a 36-gallon.

Yes they are pretty active. Initially after getting them they sometimes will behave different until comfortable. My large one just floated for the first few days when we got them.

    • @TheAquaticCoder

The large one was a lucky find in a local fish store. We randomly saw them when we had an empty tank so we got lucky. The others I have currently are from GoldfishIsland.com

I wish to have like this oranda big head

  • @a-kanaal5865
    @a-kanaal5865 11 місяців тому

I would like to see more long Orandas with less head growth, and more healthy breeding, as far as possible with this variant. the Orandas on the market today are, in my opinion, grotesque enlargements and not graceful at all.
Longer slimmer fish with good tails and less headgrowth then do be better swimmers, and have less oppressed organs.
I plan to cross a comet goldfish with an Oranda for a slender strong fish with minimal head growth, but I am not a breeder and do not have infinite time and financial resources at my disposal, but I will do it in the future. I wish more people would work on this cross there is a video on youtube, I can't post a link but search comet tail x oranda for an example of such a fish.

Same with flowerhorns. Never had luck raising one and spent way too much on meds trying to keep one alive. The sad thing is that I tried 3 times, and each time they either got hole in the head or Hexmita.
