It's funny, they were talking on the news about drugs being taken over the border in body cavities! Bugsy has had mostly clean MOTs and they're putting a few thousand miles on a year so I think they're treating it well. I'd be tempted to buy it back if I had the chance...
Hi, that unit is a GROM AND2 unit, designed to provide USB support for Android devices (through a pretty awful app) or just 3.5mm input. I'm sure there are better alternatives now like the Alpine head unit I eventually fitted, there's a video of that on my channel. Thanks for watching.
Thinking of picking up a cheap 3k 4.0 v8, and getting it in to be checked out as a daily driver. Future overlanding in scotland. Should I or should i not that is the question
At this age I think that's the right way to go, the V8 is going to be more reliable than the Td5. As long as the chassis isn't too rotten you shouldn't have too many issues. If you want one with air suspension and active damping it's worth replacing the air bags immediately and swapping the ACE block for the one from Design & Development Engineering. it gets rid of the plastic seals that don't last. Hope you can find a nice one.
Hi David, it depends what you're doing. If you're green laning or driving around muddy tracks the CDL will help if it's slippery but you probably wouldn't notice the difference. If you're going to play sites or anywhere you could get into axle twists you will have to rev it to get the TC to kick in, a CDL really helps here. Never taken this off road but I saw someone at a play site recently in a D2 with road tyres and the TC was working really hard, it ended up with him almost rolling because he had to go so fast and maybe having a CDL would've prevented it. Tyres were the biggest issue though.
Hi, it was a 90 litre tank (roughly 20 UK gallons, 24 US gallons) and at the time from empty it would've cost about £100 to fill up ($140). The most I ever got was 21mpg (about US 17.5mpg) and that was on a long run. I think it was worth it, though.
If you just want a toy you could get one for a couple of grand or less, something with a manual and without the air suspension and hydraulics to go wrong. It would have a reasonably high mileage though and will probably need a rear chassis at some point. Better ones with low miles and the fancy features are up to £7K now but somewhere in between should get you a decent one. If I bought this now, as it is it'd probably be around £4-5k. I'm honestly not sure if V8s are cheaper than Td5s any more.
Matt Tester thanks for the info, very helpful. I had a td4 freelander as my first car and just about everything went wrong with it! I have time to work on it myself but when the transmission went that was it for me. I suspect the transmission and 4wd system in the disco is a little more reliable?
@@ptr6092 Yes the Disco 1 and 2 are both much more robust, they essentially use the same gearboxes/axles/differentials as the Defender. No Haldex units, viscous couplings or intermediate drives like the Freelander. Shame they had so much trouble because I've grown to like those things. Keep an eye out for a Disco 2 with the centre diff-lock added (early models) or fitted from the factory (later models) if you want to go off road, the electronic traction control was amazing in 1998 but it still needs help sometimes. Not that I've ever been off road in Bugsy, I have the bobtail for that!
Hopefully you don't remember it for bad driving! Lots of people think it's a private plate but it's original, it was up in the Manchester area until I brought it down to the Midlands in 2015.
Never been told that before, hope it's a good thing! You get a lot for your money with these, especially the V8s. This just sailed through the MOT for another year, still only 76k on the clock. Check out the videos of my bobtail Disco, that beast is my off road toy now.
Aww Bugsy!! Fond memories of our epic border crossing adventure! Hope the new owner is looking after it!

I've got a disco 2 2003 actually here in the US and it's got 137k on it and it's running great the 4.6 is a great V8
Nice Rover. I see those now and again in the U.S. But definitely left hand drive.
+yourbeekeeper Thanks, I'm enjoying the V8 so far. These seemed to sell quite well in the US, you guys got the 4.6 too where we only got the 4 litre.
+Matt Tester my dad has the 4.0 l but it gets the job done
Can I ask what the interface you had in the glove box is please?

@@MattTester cheers for the reply matt
Was chauffered in the car. Would Über 10/10 again. Too bad i can only find tdi5s here in germany :(
Germans were clearly too sensible to buy these things. :D
The Germans are sadly why we have the td5 pesky bmw lol

@@MattTester thanks matt, much appreciated. Not only are the v8s more reliable but they sound amazing. Certainly makes the low mpg worth it.
Do you think the 2003 model not having CDL but having TC makes a big difference? Good video btw, thanks

@@MattTester thanks so much matt. Agree on the tyres making a difference.
Hi there, awesome vid!! Can I ask how much it was to fill an empty tank, and how your mpg was?

How much would you pay for a v8 and a td5 nowadays?

three years since I last commented im getting a 1999 4.9 GS (whatever that means).. today. mine has the T shapes shifter
Worth getting one to enjoy while it's still vaguely affordable, I hope you have fun with it. I do miss this one.
@@MattTester thanks I love it!
