- Yellowfin and blackfin tuna offshore fishing out of Oregon Inlet in North Carolina. Reports had been spotty leading up to this trip, but enough small blackfin were around that we decided to go try to target them with light tackle, especially since outriggers weren't an option for us. We ended up finding some pretty incredible surface activity with way more yellowfins than we anticipated to find!
Glad to see you let Todd Minor catch a few!
Pretty work sir looked to be hella fun!!
Too much fun

If ur gunna put a lot of time into the popping stuff I’d upgrade ur gear. Def rods at least. Centaur makes a great popping rod that doubles as a great Cobia stick. 7 foot 8 and sub $200. Lure wise too id invest in a few madd mantis poppers and stickbaits
I have a popper setup, we caught some 50-60lb yellowfins on it in July and it handled them with ease (check out the video!!). Just didn't take it this time because we were working with limited space and small blackfins were the target. It would have been too much rod for the small hooks on the metal jigs we ended up catching all of our fish on anyway.
I would rather enjoy the numerous small fish and maybe get smoked one time than be throwing big gear at small fish just in case. The reason we're casting is for the enjoyment of it anyway.
