Oh to be young again and have the internet! My fingers aren't what they used to be. I learned the Chet Atkins style off of LP records and hours upon hours of practice. Only stopped playing to eat and sleep, and go thru the motions to get a passing grade in school. Keep those fingers loosened up Joe! Love your playing.
I”ve been playing this arrangement for 3-4 weeks now, starting to slip fluidly through the changes now. A bit choppy in parts, but almost performance ready. Look forward to playing this over next few months and really getting it under my fingers. Can’t thank you enough Joe for the patient, detailed way you layer out this song.I’m typically a blues noodler, so this piece has been great to show me I can learn a difficult song with a bit of focused discipline. Thanks, you’re an awesome teacher!
Best tutorial out there. Really appreciate how you shared & explained each section so beautifully. You gifted me my 1st full song played on a guitar. Looking forward to more tutorials from you! Thank you
Joe, I am really impressed with what you’re sharing in this lesson. As so many intermediate guitar players plateau when learning covers, I found myself wanting to get away from that level of basic performance playing to a higher level of instrumentals especially after acquiring a professional level instrument. When I came across this lesson, I placed it on the top of my playlist for this reason. I am so intrigued that this can be played without singing but keep the integrity of the melody especially at the octave jump. Really nice work!
Change the World was a tune written by a guy named “ Baby Face “ who went to my high school decades after me in Indianapolis. The guy who played on the original demo in LA, sent to EC, can be found in a video playing the same guitar I think.. Tim ? Plays guitar over him. I’ll remember Tim’s last name halfway through tomorrow most likely ? ? But it’ll come up under the song title on UA-cam I hope. It’s very cool too.
Thank you Joe. Some of that stretching is beyond me tbh, but great to see someone else who reads books and uses their thumb in the intro. Lots of good take aways even for a newer player 👌🏼
Joe thanks for this clear lesson in layman’s terms bro your unreal player , that maton guitar is class like tommys 😀cheers lad from Ireland loving your videos thanks for your knowledge and sharing it cheers lad take care I’m just starting my fingerpicking after 10 years of strumming 🤙🤙🤙
It is really fantastic lesson , on the highest possible level . I am rapidly falling off , of my critical approach. Simply the best what you could expect from your dreamed of guitar teacher.
This is really a great version. Having been schooled at a jazz school I might define a chord or two differently.. for the sake of improvisation mainly, but all said, great arrangement. ( the second chord in the decending line from F# minor ( … “ beyond that door “.. ) might be called a C#/e#. The third of C# is E#, not F. The sequence is sometimes called a “ line cliché “ as other jazz tunes use: F#min, F#min(major7), F#min7, F#min6th. Note: F#-6 is the same chord as D#-7(b5) and would take either an F# Dorian scale or a D# Locrian mode for improvising .. a good trick to know! Carry on! Thanks
Hey Joe... your amazing brother!!! Thank you so much for this instruction... This is the one I want to learn the most!! I look forward to one day playing it as beautifully as you sir.... Eddie Lee 🙏
Fantastic sir! Thank you, I’m currently doing your beginner and intermediate guitar lessons, any chance you could do a quick lesson on learning the slap method you use in a lot of your Travis guitar covers?
Beautiful arrangement. Im halfway in when it comes to finishing learning this tablature. One thing that is not clear to me is at ~15:59 you include the percussive sound and im having a hard time to understand how you are doing it. If there is, by any chance, some video that you could link?
Just a minor problem yall, when u guys pluck go in the middle cuz when u pluck on the side it doesnt make that clear sound but when u pluck on the middle u get that whole sound
May I ask how the technique you used in the last part of this article does it? I can see that using 3 fingers to flick the treble strings but I don't know if it's correct? Looking forward to hearing from you? My idol
It's great you break down song how you play this. But I'm more interesting, how to get yourself to be able to create this, ideas and so on. So, you achieved that level, and now it's probably all those ideas, arrangements and playing comes to you naturally. Because I'm not on that level, my thinking is first I have to learn a lot fingerstyle songs, then ideas and arrangements will come to me. Is that right? And thank you for sharing your knowledge ☺️
You’re exactly right, the best way to develop Fingerstyle technique and arranging skills is to first learn a lot of tunes. Here is a video I made about the arranging process: ua-cam.com/video/79KCMrLhvT8/v-deo.html
@@Joe_Robinson Thank you for fast reply. You are very kind :) As I remember Tommy saying, "first you have to take in so you can give out". And thank you for your time, I appreciate it. Could you give some tips about how to easy transform any song to different keys? What method use, what tools? Do you use nashville number system, or something else. Whether you play fingerstyle or just play rhythm. Because you learn a song in one key rhythm part for example, and now you play with somebody and you have to right away play in different key. What best way to do that would be? (and not use a capo :)
Hi Rob , in my opinion, you are great instructor, but I have one recommendation. Will it be possible to affix the chords on the frets while teaching the song for some who has not Master chords yet.
Unfortunately that is illegal. You cannot display the TAB on screen for a copyrighted song. But I have the TAB available for purchase, which is the only way I can legally distribute the notation. Thanks and I appreciate it
Hi Joe, Love your stuff and met you in Cambria, CA with Tommy way back. Adelaide slayed me. Dumb question, but is there a link to the full version? Or have I missed something by skipping to the tricky bits?
Hello Joe, love your work quick Q - I don't know what course to buy - I have been playing for a long time but mostly strumming and singing - my only experience with fingerstyle would be Classical Gass that one I can play it very fluidly I am a fan of Eric Clapton and can play this one - not in this arrangement and Layla is my old time favorite, instead of buying the tab was thinking in getting the course would that give me access to this tab with these arrangements? bottom line beginner or intermediate?
Thanks Daniel, the Fingerstyle Intermediate course would be the one for you - I don't have the Tears In Heaven TAB in that course, but if you send me a message in the course I can send it your way

Not yet! But it's on my list, hope to get to it eventually, such a beautiful song
