I bought the 3.0 Duramax and sold it after 4 months and bought the 6.2 V8 and love it! The acceleration off the start is good for the 3.0 L, but accelerating at high speeds is pretty bad. I live in Colorado and driving with the V8 up the mountains and passing people going up a hill at high speeds feels great. I don't like the extra costs/ maintinance of diesel engines such as DEF, fuel filter changes, 911 additive when its cold , and etc.... I also have a 6.6 Duramax so it's nice to have a gas engine that doesn't have that lag for my non-towing vehicles. Since I've owned both, I wanted to share my thoughts.

What extra maintenance are you talking about? Literally the only difference is the fuel filter. Cheap and easy to do in your drive way. Fuel additives aren't necessary. Def isn't even considered IMO

One thing I love about my new at4 is the camera system views I get while trailering my boat. The systems automatically gives you side views on the screen when using your turn signals. Incredibly great view when towing.

Had a 2017 Silverado with the 6.2. Loved it!! Was looking for the 6.2 in the AT4. Test drove them both and the 6.2 was more punchy. However, the 3.0 LZ0 was so smooth I ended up getting that. I agree with some folks in here that the overall power isn’t there (obviously 305 vs 420). However, I average 15.2 mpg in western PA and am currently averaging just under 22mpg. I don’t tow or anything so it works for me. Fuel prices are about .40 to 60 cents more for diesel than premium here.

I traded my 5.3 at4 into a 3.0 diesel because at the time thats all they had. seems like most of the new shipments are the 3.0's. I drive 40-60k miles per year for work so the diesel probably makes more sense for me. Although I do seem to be going through more def than I thought and diesel prices are terribly high compared to gas right now. but if you run premium in 6.2 its not that big of a difference. Indiana diesel is $4.80-$5 and our gas was actually down around $3.00 whereas diesel seems to not budge. Realistically there should not be that big of a gap between gas and diesel. I am getting 22-25mpg on the low end on highway and when I'm not leadfooting it around town. My best was 32.7 mpg on county roads 45-55mph and could easily get 28mpg if you are conscious about your foot. I would say if you don't commute or care about fuel mileage go with 6.2 it will be more fun, but if you drive a lot or like the sound of a baby diesel go with 3.0, I have not been disappointed so far and have put 5k miles on my 3.0 since xmas.

Ben finally a GMC Sierra video! Good for you! Was it cold and windy enough for you? I hope you are well. Thank you for the review because I know I have constantly mentioned GMC Sierra in your other recent videos. You do a great job with the time on the videos. I like the digital gauges. It is nice to know the GMC gives you more features for the money. I am always looking at the environment when you drive vehicles to see your state. GMC has a prominent place in the GMC GM line up. They are like the Oldsmobile/Buick of trucks. They just to me have a different stature and feel to them compare to Chevrolet Silverado. Now.. I do like and support all the GM brands, but there is something a little different to me.

I just drove an AT4 with the Duramax today back to back with an SLT X31 with the 6.2 and can say that the Duramax felt smoother and didn’t short shift in the lower gears in town as much. Also, while everyone says the diesel is so quiet, it definitely has some diesel noise in the cabin, which was surprisingly nice. I came away a big fan of the Duramax in the AT4-it just seemed like a very balanced package. Diesel prices are annoyingly high but it makes up for it in reduced upfront cost and better mileage.

I wish they'd offer a steering wheel with a flat bottom (ala' Corvette). For larger guys or those wearing a service belt (sidearms, handcuffs, etc) it makes it easier to slide in/out of the driver's seat. I do like paddle shifters on the 2023. I have the 2021 with a 6.2L.

I am a big diesel fan and had my eye on the new LZ0 in the AT4. I was waiting for one to be delivered from the rail yard to the dealer but then started comparing it to the Silverado ZR2 for around the same money. I would have preferred the LZ0 diesel in the ZR2 but with that front bumper, (like the Tahoe Z71 and Yukon AT4,) you can't get the diesel to fit. (Ironically, the AT4x appears to have the same from end and a diesel would otherwise be able to fit.)
I ending up going with the ZR2 for nearly the exact price that I was looking at with an LZ0 Sierra 1500 AT4. I'm readily familiar with the 6.2L V8 coming from a C8 in the garage and other LS/LT powered Corvette's that I have had in the past, so that helped me feel a little better about the decline in fuel economy I would have otherwise had with the LZ0 in the AT4. I'm getting ready to hang an AWE cat-back on my L87 ZR2, though, and that is something I wouldn't be able to do on the diesel; those are sounds you can only get from a healthy V8!
Fuel prices right now are crazy - there is no reason for diesel otherwise being so expensive other than diesel directly threatens those that be who are trying to push EV's onto everybody. Being able to get Top Tier premium at Costo (can't beat those prices) also helped me feel better about the decline in fuel economy with the V8.

I’m planning on getting the 6.2L. The baby duramax is a nogo with limp mode when you’re low on def and you can’t (shouldn’t) store it in your truck. There’s no concern with interrupting a regen on the 6.2L and more remote locations will have gas stations over diesel stations. For long commutes and also for towing the 6.2L is the clear winner. When you factor in def costs on top of diesel costs, the fuel mileage is a moot point.

Only buy a diesel if you are towing frequently. Diesel will eventually give you trouble with the emission system because of DEF fluid. I have a 2015 duramax and at 96,000 miles the DEF SYSTEM started having failures. Spent $1700 on repairs and two weeks without a truck waiting on parts.

6.2L all day, maintenance is cheaper and the 6.2L has been around longer than the 3.0’s. Fuel here is cheaper than most places and diesel is still more expensive than even 93 octane here where I live. Don’t focus on the MPG’s of the diesel engine, it’s nice but your maintenance is gonna be way more over the ownership of that vehicle to where paying a little extra for 93 octane and buying the 6.2L is gonna come out cheaper in the long run.

Definitely I feel it’s a waste of money for the company to require premium fuel on the 6.2L.
I guess I’ll go back and continue looking at the Titan. But damn, the GMC is a head turner…

The diesel gets better fuel economy, is more reliable, tows smoother, and performs better at high altitudes. The only benefit of the 6.2 is “fun factor” but you’re paying a ton of money for that in this case.

I have the 3.0L in a 23 at4. I like it. Better fuel economy. Good power. Compared to my 2007 6.0L silverado, it feels peppier. But the 6.2L for sure would feel peppier than the 3.0L. So towing I don't think matter a ton with either pick. Fuel economy is better with the 3.0, and 6.2L is peppier. So base your decision on what you want to do with it

Dealbreaker for me between the duramax and the 6.2 is the “higher speed acceleration”. The duramax is definitely just as “get up and go” from the line. However if you’re already going 65 and punch it the duramax is kinda blah… where the 6.2 takes off like a bat out of hell. I actually had the opportunity to test both out like this as well as towing a 6k pound trailer. They both pulled it fine. But the duramax absolutely shit the bed with passing speed acceleration when already going highway speeds. And again the 6.2 just got on with it and easily accelerated.

Plus my personal favorite, purposely brake checking and finger waving when you show any sign of asking them to move over.

I test drove both of these vehicles I drove a trail boss that had all the premium interior upgrades and it was the diesel and out the door It was $70,000 I went and looked at a brand new GMC AT4 and out the door it’s like $78,000. So every time he says that the GMC is like the same price as the trail boss ,he’s wrong. it’s not ,I’ve looked at several places it’s absolutely not. The trail boss is the better deal. Not to mention for any of you guys that actually do take trucks down trails and do outdoor stuff that ends up getting you dirty ,that all black with Kalahari interior just gets dirty and shows every little thing. And for the price you’re paying the trail boss, interior looks nicer and doesn’t show every little thing. I have to say that the new GMC as much as I loved it the AT4 when it first came out is not better than the trail boss. the trail boss comes with all the same stuff.
