Day 1 Student Pilot Helicopter flight lesson - How to Hover - Robinson R44

  • Back in the instructor seat at Sevier County Choppers. This was day 1 of training, and were learning some of the basics under some pretty windy conditions. Although not ideal on day 1, if you can learn in windy conditions you can fly in anything.
    This is part 1 in a video series covering a student going from zero helicopter time to a private license. Each lesson will be filmed if able. This video series will follow one student's progress, on good days and bad, to let people get an insight into the natural progression of training.
    There are multiple ways to get to the final goal of learning how to fly. Different instructors, different students, different techniques. Full-time / Part-time.

    Michael,
    Do you think I would have a advantage learning how to hover & do forward flight, from my 16 years of flying RC helicopters? I can hover on spot & fly plus auto-rotate to the ground without damage.

    I learned in a TH55. Hovering was very hard for me. One day my instructor asked if I was trying to kill him when the rear of one skid dug into the ground and we started to roll. Later my instructor told me and my stick buddy that this was the first time he may fail at teaching students to fly, all because we could not hover after several attempts. This is about the worse thing you can hear from an instructor who has been teaching for many years. A little more practice and we both got it.

      Well, this was 7 years ago so it's a little late now but in case anyone else is reading this...for me clearing my head was key. I've driven all types of heavy machinery, pretty much everything except cranes and I got really good at driving them all. But when I was 19 I was very nervous on heavy equipment, I didn't want to cause thousands or even millions of dollars worth of damage so my mind was focused on failing which caused me to think too much when in the seat. Until one day I jumped in a forklift and was already mad as all hell at someone else, I didn't care about my driving at all but I got the job done quicker than anyone else could do it. It turns out I was much better at driving different machinery than I thought I was but since I was always focused on failing I never realized it. So then I started to practice not caring so much about hitting things, I don't mean to brag but with a clear mind I was better than anyone else I have met at driving forklifts (from 4k all the way to 50k shipping container forklfits), pavers, backhoes, skidsteers, track hoes and many more, and I even successfully applied that care free attitude to hovering a helicopter and within a few minutes of my first attempt I was able to achieve a steady hover. Every time a gust of wind hit us it would throw me off and I would have a difficult time getting it stable again but I knew how rare it is to do this so I was ecstatic, I fully expected to take 3 days to achieve what I did in 3 minutes. So yeah, sorry for the long post but for any new heli pilots out there, clear your mind! Watch your CFI's hands before he hands the control over to see what kind of movements he is making and how little of pressure he applies to the cyclic and pedals, keep that info in the back of your mind and focus on nothing but a target in the distance like this CFI was saying. Let your subconscious learn to hover!

  • @TheLcstyle

    some people do better with all 3 controls, rather than just 1, HAH. Just be glad your instructor has thousands of hours.

    It's a lot harder than it looks. there's a lot of subtlety involved to go from zero time to actually hovering.

    Being a former airline pilot and aerobatic instructor......a memory: Many years ago one of the Bell Helicopter notables dropped in at a local airport in North Texas.....Then, he asked me, "You want to go for a ride?" Well, you know my response! A beautiful Jet Ranger with someone incredible! So, off we go! He gave me the controls (minus the collective) and allowed me to to fly around, a couple of airspeed challenges, and then, the horrible directive: "Let's go hover." SO we went down between two hangars, of all things! "Ok, you got it." I think, puke and throw up." So I manage to not bend any metal, after a couple of minutes......

    Well done!
    I got my first hour with out you Michael, I did a intro flight lesson in a Schweizer 300CBi last week. 20 degrees F 10 Mph side wind, flying was fun & easy, hovering was a real bear. I will be doing another session soon to hone my hovering skills, I was only able to keep it in a 20 foot area I was hoping to hold it stationary.
    The cyclic is so touchy!

    I've seen a lot worse for day 1. I always think toe pressure on the pedals, lol. Best people I have seen on day 1 is overhead crane operators. I see it just like a overhead crane with a steel coil on the end of it. Not sure why this came up on my recommended after 10 years, lol.

    so the R22 has a governor so you don't have to worry about the throttle?

  • @michaelmiller85
    @michaelmiller85  11 років тому

    Might I recommend the Contour! The GoPro, although a great little camera is a bear to mount properly. I have to use 6 AA batteries on the other side of my headset for counterweight. I simply used one of the mounts which came with the camera in conjuction with another GoPro mount which I ordered and stuck in on. The audio I got in with an audio splicing cable which hooks up in the headset plugin.

  • @michaelmiller85
    @michaelmiller85  11 років тому

    I'm using the GoPro Hero 2 camera. It is a great camera but would probably recommend the Contour HD camera, although having never used it. From what I have heard they are less bulky and easier to mount places like on a headset etc.

    It's interesting that his flying is almost identical to my terrible flying in VR.
    It shows me that the flight modelling in the simulators is accurate.
    It's very hard to do at first, but after a while you get the idea of what's happening.
    You have the cyclic, the collective, the throttle and the rudder pedals; and you have to operate them all together at different times.
    But when you get it, it's brilliant 😂👏👏👏👍👍🚁
    Well done to the guy, it's really hard.
