    Lyrics:
If you want me to stay
    I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
    I'm about to go
    And then you'll know
For me to stay here I've got to be me
    You'll never be in doubt
    That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
    Count the days I'm gone
    Forget reaching me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while
    When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person that you really are now
You got to get it straight
How could I ever be late
When you're my woman takin' up my time
    How could you ever allow
    I guess I wonder how
How could you get out of pocket for fun
When you know that you never number two
Number one gonna be number one
    I'll be good
    I wish I could
Get this message over to you now
    When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person you really are now
    I'll be so good
    I wish I could
Get the message over to you now

This is an all-time masterpiece, the way the start is like all these hazy, loose elements gathering themselves into a rythm, and then you get these three incredibly memorable melodies (Sly & the twin horn and keyboard lines) not interfering with each other, perfectly adding to what one another is doing? The mixing is perfect as well, the bass punchy at the front carrying the song and the horns restrained and giving just enough without rising above the other sounds. The vocal DELIVERY as well... genius, genius, genius.

Since I come from that time (60's), just to let you know, James Brown (Godfather of Soul) and George Clinton (Godfather of Clone Funk, P-Funk) were already on the scene. Sly brought in a whole new funky sound, however, adding rock to r&b, becoming the Master of this genre of Funk, straight from California. With a Diverse band, Diverse sound and Diverse LOOK. They were mod, wore funky clothes, were colorful to look at as well as listen to. We were never the same afterwards. He brought everyone together, black, white, red, polka-dot, WHATEVER!! Was so much fun, would I love to go back there again? Better believe it..

    • @3YZ-TS191
      @3YZ-TS191 4 роки тому +9

Just as an fyi, James is dubbed “The godfather of soul.” And yes, he indeed was. But he was also the godfather of funk, in spite of that title never being attributed to him (so much for classical labeling!). James delivered funk as early as the 60s; groups like Sly and P-Funk borrowed the style, which became popular in the early 70s when these groups were flying high. Recognize, now….

    Lyrics
If you want me to stay
    I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
    I'm about to go
    And then you'll know
For me to stay here I've got to be me
    You'll never be in doubt
    That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
    Count the days I'm gone
    Forget reaching me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while
    When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person that you really are now
You got to get it straight
How could I ever be late
When you're my woman takin' up my time
    How could you ever allow
    I guess I wonder how
How could you get out of pocket for fun
When you know that you never number two
Number one gonna be number one
    I'll be good
    I wish I could
Get this message over to you now
    When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person you really are now
    I'll be so good
    I wish I could
Get the message over to you now

Used to be at his duplex in Hollywood a lot, I do not know if he owned it, or if he rented it was a two unit bldg. right on the corner of two very busy streets. Cochran and Sunset. The bldg. had a unit downstairs. with one bed room and bathroom a living room, dining room and a kitchen, The unit up stairs was similar. but, it had two bedrooms and a back door that led to a laundry room and a stairway to the parking. There was no room for guest parking. I believe he slept downstairs, because there was clothes all over and it smelled like someone LIVED there...both units had hard wood floors, plenty of windows , high ceilings, a lot of charm, and a grand piano in the living room. Upstairs is where people convened. There zero furniture, but he ha nice rugs all on the hard wood floors...nothing in the kitchen, no cups, or food...plates. Nothing. It smelled like fresh paint. It was 1978 and, I guess it is okay to say, that there was cocaine everywhere in Los Angeles. Free base had just become fashionable...while having tried it once, I never liked it. My honey was his connect...so, he welcomed us when we got there and chased everyone away. I cooked his stuff in the kitchen with chemicals and, we always played backgammon. My boyfriend would back me. Sly would be smoking that stuff and playing backgammon with me...I was drinking sprite. He was big shot better, and could stay up all night playing. He'd lose his money and then his cocaine and then...we, I still have the rugs....He had a heavy and cool accent...that sounds just like he sounds in this song. I am 5'3" and he wasn't much bigger. I am 103 lbs, and wasn't much fatter...he played this song on the piano for us....after that, I would ask him to play every time we were there. I loved this song and he always said I'm cool...or "I'm good, " at the end...it was like he was talking to the band...he had a drum machine that my boyfriend operating when he played this.
If I may, two little things...: Otherwise, it's not an easy song to get perfect and you did...
You got to get damned straight
How could I ever be late
      When you're the woman taking
      Up all my time...?
      How come you're never around?
      I guess I wonder how
I was getting myself back into fun
      How, how how?
      **However, he does say sometimes,
I was getting out of pocket
      For fun?
      How how how?
*** (He WAS out of pocket if cocaine was his fun), he didn't always have all the money and that is how these epic games began...long tedious games. I was so tired, he was so high...some times I wonder if that is why he always segues in I wanna take you higher, after this song...
**** In the end, I told my boyfriend that I was going back to college...he could come up to Berkeley or stay...I picked up and left, part of the condition of his coming with me was he had to clean up his hand...Not long after I left, my boyfriend showed up at my apt. with all my furniture and his loving face....he had cleaned up his had...and we lived happily after for the next 30 years..

"If You Want Me To Stay"
If you want me to stay
    I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
But I am about to go
    And then you'll know
For me to stay here I got to be me
    You'll never be in doubt
    That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
    Count the days I'm gone
    Forget reachin' me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while
    When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person....that you really are now
    Got t' get in straight
How could I ever be late
When you're m' woman takin' up my time
Whoa, how could ya ever allow
    I guess I wonder how
I could get outta' pocket for fun- huh howw
When you know that you're never number two
Number one's gonna be number one
    ohh oww oohh
    I'll be good,
    I wish I could
I get this message over to you now.
    Ahhh!
    (instrumental)
    yeah
    When ya' see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person you really are now
    I'll be so good, oh
    I wish I could
Get the message over to you now
    ahhh- yes oh.....
