My Mom is Rosalie Trombley and she was the Music Director at CKLW through the mid-60’s to the late 80’s. When Bill was first starting out and trying to get AirPlay, she started to play his songs. CKLW had a lot of influence then and even though it was a Canadian Radio station, other stations across the mid-west would watch what she added every week and her ability to pick hit songs became legendary. She loved Bill’s voice and the airplay Bill got on CKLW lead to other stations adding his records and they all became big hits. My Mom is now 80 years old and in failing health. I know she would be deeply saddened to know that Bill died today. He is a legend and an icon. His voice and his gentlemanly disposition will be missed. Condolences from the Trombley family today to to Bill’s family members. RIP Bill, you will be missed my so many around the world. May your music always live on. 🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻

His songs and his voice held a greater immediacy, something that resonated with you more on an everyday level. He wasn't the vocal supreme of an Al Green, Barry White or Teddy P of the day. But songs like Use Me (my fave of his) evoke that 'ok I'm being used but not like I'm using you' sentiment. Brilliant message. No need to even the score because that's happening and then some.
