    Lyrics:
'My friends feel it's their appointed duty
They keep trying to tell me
All you want to do is use me
But my answer, yeah to all that use me stuff
I want to spread the news
That if it feels this good getting used
You just keep on using me
    Until you use me up
    Until you use me up
My brother sit me right down and he talked to me
He told me that I ought not to let you just walk on me
And I'm sure he meant well
Yeah, but when our talk was through
I said, brother, if you only knew
You'd wish that you were in my shoes
You just keep on using me
    Until you use me up
    Until you use me up
    Sometimes, it's true
    You really do abuse me
You get me in a crowd of high-class people
And then you act real rude to me
But, oh baby, baby, baby, baby
When you love me, I can't get enough
I want to spread the news
That if it feels this good getting used
Girl, you just keep on using me
    Until you use me up
    Until you use me up
    Talkin' 'bout you usin' people
It all depends on what you do
It ain't too bad the way you're usin' me
Cause I sure am usin' you to do the things you do'
To do the things you do

i remember a girl in 6th grade who was fairly popular who lived about a3 blocks away from me newer student and she would call me to come over and i was not popular but wanted to be her friend and would always say when another more popular girl would show up too that i just called her and it was a lie she called me and i never said anything was not tough or confrontive but it hurt and really bothered me people are so funny but im sure we've all done that at one point but i actually would feel guilty they didn't!

My Mom is Rosalie Trombley and she was the Music Director at CKLW through the mid-60’s to the late 80’s. When Bill was first starting out and trying to get AirPlay, she started to play his songs. CKLW had a lot of influence then and even though it was a Canadian Radio station, other stations across the mid-west would watch what she added every week and her ability to pick hit songs became legendary. She loved Bill’s voice and the airplay Bill got on CKLW lead to other stations adding his records and they all became big hits. My Mom is now 80 years old and in failing health. I know she would be deeply saddened to know that Bill died today. He is a legend and an icon. His voice and his gentlemanly disposition will be missed. Condolences from the Trombley family today to to Bill’s family members. RIP Bill, you will be missed my so many around the world. May your music always live on. 🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻

Withers always sang from a place of real. You were more likely to pull off his vocal stylings in the shower or when trying to impress your significant. His songs and his voice held a greater immediacy, something that resonated with you more on an everyday level. He wasn't the vocal supreme of an Al Green, Barry White or Teddy P of the day. But songs like Use Me (my fave of his) evoke that 'ok I'm being used but not like I'm using you' sentiment. Brilliant message. No need to even the score because that's happening and then some. Let's tip a hat or say a toast to an everyday cat with a streak of extraordinaire, like you or me.

In the 90's I heard a band perform their own version of this, and I immediately remember it. One of my favorites when it came out, but my musical tastes went to hard rock, and forgot about it. I had to buy it so I could have it for forever, because there's just something about this groove, and the lyrics that just speak the truth. RIP Mr Withers, I sincerely wish you and your family & friends peace.

This song never gets mentioned but it was my favorite of his. RIP Bill.
I saw him in 1986 or 87 at the Arena Theater in Houston (in the round) with an ensemble filled out by some of the best session players in the biz, including Kenny G, Lee Ritenour, Herbie Mann, Harvey Mason and Victor Bailey. The "Electric Nights Jazz Tour" sponsored, or course, by Kool. I forget who was the keyboardist.
It was an incredible show from 10' off the front of the stage. I wanna go back.

It sounds like Bill Withers is sitting and playing right next to you, along with the guitars, it's a very 3D recording. Back when musicians all sat in same room...you can hear the open room around them.
That was lost when recordings went electronic. It is not that there is not good music since then, but the listener lost that feeling of intimacy that came from musicians and singers standing or sitting right besides each other.
