By 1972, Curtis Mayfield had already established himself in music as both a creative force and a voice of the people. The Superfly soundtrack was the pinnacle of his creativity. In fact, when you think of Superfly, you can't help but hear the funk of "Pusherman" or the other songs in your head. Eternal props to the great Curtis Mayfield and the brilliant musicians on this timeless classic!
Yes they participated in the elite's plans of culture manipulation that promoted pimps and drug dealers as black heroes, that has been responsible for derailing black society.
The single guitar chord strums on the verses, specifically... absolutely unreal dynamics in this song, so understated. Like dude trying to strum so quiet, almost muted at times, yet they still ring out thin and sparse as they are. Love this song's arrangement so much.
I have seen a comment that his music and Isaac Hayes provide the sound track ( the soul and heart/substance)to the wire tv serial and it makes complete sense. Drugd, urban decay, destitution, rich drugs dealers. I never thought of that but now it makes sense. I heard Isac Hayes soulville on the house we live in,a drug and prison documentary that David Simon was featured in. Not surprisingly Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield are heavily featured in the wire sounds track

He always sounds so chill, but the bitter sarcasm in all his lyrics lets you know that Mayfield was a very angry man. And angry for good reason. Angry at what has happening to his community. It's an interesting combination, the chill sound vs the angry Lyrics. It's disturbing that so many people in these comments don't understand, and think that this track is about good times selling and doing drugs. The song is obviously about the horrors of addiction
1st of all, don't even mention Pam Grier's name in my presence...Lmao. If Mayfield was angry, lets call it righteous , of course, and not how its often described, to characterize and vilify poplations who are abused and manipulated, everyday people who shine as bright as any star in the galaxy but are made to feel as dull and ordinary as a wet cloth. Keep pushing Curtis... Keep listening people Together you are the energy of the planet. You can never truly die for you are timeless, Flowing like the Nile, Rise like the warmth of the sun!
When I first watched the film 'Superfly', I really thought it was going to be just another Blaxploitation movie. But it was SO much more...and Curtis Mayfield's music really made it incredible!
