"It's not photorealistic."
Some of my viewers want every video to be realistic, others want every video to be manga-style. My approach is to the balance the two as best I can. Thanks for watching! ~Mark
Wow! I kinda thought screen tones were just special stencils that magically made a pattern of dots for you after you rubbed pencil on them. I have a new respect for people who actually use those. :)
I know right? I thought it was a stencil but now im just impressed
Fun_With_G-Mod I used to read a 1990 era how-to manga book that teaches you how to replicate these patterns BY HAND with inking... So it used to be even more painstaking I think
mark009vn Oh my god, that must be painful! I can barely stipple a single picture without hurting my hand; I definitely couldn't make screen tones!
Take a look at the art of the manga Akira. It goes on for 2,500 pages and took the artist over 10 years to complete, not just because of tedious screentones, but because of how detailed and meticulous his art is. Stuff like Akira really makes me respect artists as determined as they were.
@@mark009vn so that's why they didn't used tones that much
That has to be the single coolest thing I've ever seen.
DARKGORZ Thank you :)
markcrilley You are most welcome. I am curious: Is it possible to have a manga published in full color?
DARKGORZ Totally.
Nova-Art Is this a response to my original comment, or an answer to my question? lol
Your question
I laughed so much when u said that u were gonna end the video but suddenly went back just to draw the blushies XD
^_^
@@markcrilley ooo
Holy hell I feel so fortunate to live in the day and age where this can be applied fairly easily to digital images using free software.
Must be really hard on the budget to have to invest in physical screen tones.
what software?
And when like me you just wanna do it full traditionally, you just want to die...
@@nemozinioux Why would you wanna do it fully traditionally?
Femto Himself there’s an app you can get on IOS called “Medibang Paint” I use that for drawing Manga!
@@femtohimself71 paint tool sai
i love the way the hair came out
Jessica B Thanks Jessica!
"I'm totally following mark on Instagram!"
--Thanks, Kate! I'm going to try to post at least one pic every day. ^_^ ~Mark
I died when you pulled out the background screen-tone xD
"What are those? Bubbles?"
i actually see a couple of your manga's in my school lybrary here in australia.
the miki falls one.
Sweet! Thanks for letting me know. :)
markcrilley same here in Houston
I always love saying
And ill be back with another one, real soon
With you everytime a vid ends
Oh man. Mark I remember watching your videos as a 13 year old learning the foundations of art, and now I’m watching them again in 2022 for screentone examples! My work has grown so much over the years but I will always remember my roots on this channel. If you’re reading this, thanks so much for what you do.❤
This is why I love Mark's videos. I haven't even heard of screentones until today, I would love to try using them.
That is really interesting, and really cool. I had no idea of this process. I guess i always supposed... you know, computers... or whatever. I love these videos!
Thanks :)
markcrilley How long have you drawn manga? u have unbelievable skills!
I don't know how I missed this video! I was just letting UA-cam go on and on with its auto-play and came across a "My Mangaka LIFE" video. The girl, Lizbeth R. Jimenez, says she does still do traditional manga, along with the screen tones. So, theres one, at least, that still does it this way. Thats cool. I immediately looked to see if you did a video, and you had! It's a really cool technique.. but yes, tedious, and I imagine the hand cramping that would go along with it! haha
Love all of your videos!
Mark you have always been a huge inspiration to me and one of my favorite youtubers. I am so glad you're art brought you success, it gives me hope that one day I will be as lucky.
This was absolutely amazing! I absolutely loved it! ❤ Thank you so much for showing us how to do these old school techniques. I plan on making my own manga soon and you've shown me how much work I have to do. 🙈🙈 .
I met Mark Crilley in middle school! Such a cool + nice guy!
Nicole Rok bruh
I saw your book at Michaels today😊
I actually really like the look of this, feel free to do more of this Mark!
Great work, Mark. You are a continuing source of inspiration for me, and no doubt, countless others
In the beginning I didn't know what to think of those bubbles, but it turned out to be a wonderfull background :D
Amazing work Mark. Wish I could draw half as good as you :'(
who doesn't
comments like this really pisses me off. have you put the same amount of effort/time that he did? its really depressing to see people saying "man i wish i was as good as you but.. i don't wanna put time into it." i might aswell stop reading comments from mark's videos. ffs
DubstepSon oh really? As a matter of fact, I do spend a lot of time drawing. Comments like yours, where people just say stuff without checking the facts and/or background, are the ones that piss ME of.
thats just stupid, stop dragging people down, with stuff "i can,'t" "i would never be able to do this" you know, i dont give a fuck if you think you cant but dont drag me with you because im trying to be as good. and if you're so sure that you're drawning that much you should have some hope/fate on urself and ]not make such whiny comments. sorry for not expressing myself correctly but i think u get it.
I never said I cannot do it. I just said I wished I could draw only half as good as Mark. I don't care if you 'give a fuck' or not, but your commends do nothing but giving unessessary insults. You also just somehow make up a bunch of conclusions that just don't make sens.
What the fudge.... How did manga artists not die from this....? D=
The same way they didn't die from 1-2 meals a day and 3 hours of sleep; perseverance.
An Advocate For Manga @_@;
Aki U Toriyama of Dragon Ball once only got 20 minutes of sleep. Safe to say, screentones weren't their highest priority.
Words cannot describe the rush of nostalgia I had when I saw the drawing you were gonna add screen tone to.
Mark...i hope you know your artwork is very beautiful and inspiring. I found your channel and 3 years later i am now much more confident (and better) at drawing, and you and your channel is very inspiring. I have to thank you for that
What do you use in place of the screen tones nowadays? computer of Grey pens?
Computer software.
If that's old school, then Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun has lied to me.
(I think it's still used today!)
yes, some people prefer to use screen tones whereas others prefer to do it on computers
Awesome! And can't wait for "Mastering Manga Vol.2" to come out!
I always come back to this video! It's so cool to watch the process...
I have neither the patience nor the proper skills with an exactoknife to pull that off.... I do all my shading for my comic with pencil. XD It's still really cool to watch some of the old school art techniques though. :D
Imagine how the pro mangaka feel XD some use a lot of screen tone like the AoT manga and all that haha
Shadow Blaze
Yeah, the ones who don't do the shading digitally would spend a ton of time with just one chapter.
Crystal Cali yeah it would take a lot of time i wouldnt be able to do it
so awesome! o/////o
Being an artist myself I must say that's pretty cool. Never knew how much hard work went into making mangas back then. I have a new appriciation for them now
I don't know if this is the right or wrong way to apply screentones - this is the first time I have ever heard of them, but I definitely LOVE the way it looks! Thanks for sharing! :)
I was curious how people put screen tones after watching Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun... It seems like a very tedious process ._.

Lol Ashley XD
So did I XD
SNAKE?! :D
Great video man. It's crazy how you still spend the time to help us. Thanks for that.
Wow, what a painstaking process! I certainly have an appreciation for how gorgeous it looks.
just goes to show you that drawing and comic and manga design has gone a LONG way! keep it up man! :D
I bough mastering manga along with the 4 books of miki falls -a humble support beside your very useful videos I learned so much ! Thank You !
Salute to all the manga artists who still use this method!
you are very hardworking.
Pain staking as it may be, it's very satisfying.
Amazing. Truly amazing. Im surprised how long it must take. I love how it all came out together.
I just had to watch this again. I just purchased my very first set of tones and used it on a one shot Manga I'm creating....so much fun I love it. Thank you for creating this video...have a good one.
Samantha Thrower Do you have a link to your deviant art or something? I'd love to check it out once it's out! ^^
Hobo Tech yes I do....Samansa76...please critique honestly good or bad :)....still working on my perspective and character development so any help is welcomed
I love your work and I read one of the Mastering Manga books, brilliant ideas on how to make character designs, loved the entire book and the concepts and you ( & Christopher Hart, you may know of him or know him yourself.) But you are not just an artist, you're a genius! Thanks for the inspiration!
Sensei you make the inning process look so easy I bow in your GLORIOUSNESS
Thanks for showing old school tech, Mark. I used to make illustrations with Amberlith/Rubylith, Letraset, Letratone, airbrushes and such. I was lucky enough to learn these to use professionally for about four years before computers made it all easier. It's made me more able to do all sorts of other artforms by hand; so glad I learned the "hard way" first! :)
I attended a seven-month comics-course back in 2010-2011, yet I never learned what this marvellous dot technique (as I called it) was, let alone how it was done.
So there, Mark, you just taught me something new.
that looks really good. well done Crilley.
The drawing is so beautiful!!!
This is the MOST BEAUTIFUL thing i ever saw. it's was REALLY good
I just love your videos!!!your drawings are really awesome!
Great job as always Mark, really cool seeing how it was done in the days of old.
LOL "the blushies"

I love your videos so much!!! They are really helpful!😍🙌💖
Looks amazing on the hair. Absolutely stunning. :)
I've never head of or seen this technique done before. I always thought it was done digitally. That's cool!
Damn this is the coolest thing I have seen in a while.
I really love the way how you draw!
and thanks to you I 'm much better now ^^
Thank you !
You're so humble, yet so talented. Your videos have inspired me to learn how to draw manga. Im gonna go and buy Miki Falls and your other manga now. :D
Mark, this was completely awesome!
Superb! absolutely superb! really wish I got on board with your videos YEARS ago!
Thanks!
That is way more fun than I ever imagined!!
You do such a nice job. I am so envious. Thank you.

This is one of your best videos!
Thank you so much, Mr. Crilley! :D
I've been waiting for this video... Thanks Mark!!
I always enjoy the music Crilley-sensei creates for us XD this one in particular is my favorite c:
I'm going to Japan at the end of the year and I now know just what I shall be acquiring.
Awesomesauce! That is so cool. I remember when I first drew the innocent girl... memories.
Wow, thank you for showing this technique. I never knew it was done this way in the past.. Very interesting.
I enjoyed this one that is cool to see how they do screening and it looks really clean after :-) great vid mark!
I have seen screen notes used in most videos from "masataka sensei" and i think it's still a very cool way to apply effects and colors on to manga drawings or in old manga.
so satisfying, thanks for the video
Mark
Your so good!!!
i really love your videos and the way you make them.
Keep doing this.
God, you are really good
thank you mark. im using this in my comic because it looks amazing
I'm never bored when i watch your videos
I've knew about this process for a while, and have desperately wanted to try it. Although it takes a long time, and as you said, rather frustrating. I hope I can find similar screen-tone paper somewhere online as I'd love to try it myself~ thanks for the video!
This is BEAUTIFUL
i was expecting it to be a transfer type. were friction over the surface would transfer the spots. This looks like a massive chore. but OMG that hair got me excited.
Mastering Manga part 2?! YES!!
I feel like we need a Mark Crilley appreciation day
Thank you so much Mark, for doing this one in HD! :)
i first started drawing after i saw the original innocent girl vid, and i have gotta say im happy you re did her for this she looks 100 times better just as pencil lineart let alone screen toned
I'm a huge fan of yours great work as always
waaaah, it really does give a professional finish :O. Also I find it funny how you say trusty prismacolour like its a superhero xP
this is really cool, I had never heard of screentones before, even though I own and use photoshop I would love to try this affect and hope to in the future, nice video! :D
This looks incredible
This was awesome! I didn't know that that's how you used screen tones. ^_^ Thank you for sharing!
Now you got me looking through my entire manga collection for evidence of screentone.
wow it honestly the best drawing I think ive seen you do😃
this looks amazing!
It looks really cool!
Awesome! It's been a while since I chanced upon Mr.Crilley upload his videos only after a few minutes! :D
