- The recent fatal shooting of a deaf driver by a police officer in North Carolina has raised questions about safety for hearing impaired motorists. Jennifer Labriola, the principal of the New York School for the Deaf who drives to work each day, told Inside Edition through a sign language interpreter that if a hearing impaired driver is pulled over, "you tell the police officer you're deaf and 'I need to write this down.' What in the world gives cops the right to shoot an unarmed person in the first place? He probably didn't even know the cops were there. These cops should be put in prison for murder. Just because a person doesn't respond when yelled at doesn't give the cops the right to open fire. This really hits home for me, because my little sister is deaf.

Well, in a sense this is a good idea. But, Deaf people can also do everything a hearing person can do except hear. It's like putting a blue sign on your car so you can park closer to a store and police know you're disabled. But, Deaf doesn't mean disabled. I think some Deaf people would enjoy having a sticker and others would be offended. It depends on the Deaf person.

Honestly, this worries me. As a teen who has worked so hard to be able to communicate with members of the deaf community, I can't believe this could happen to my friends. I really want to believe that when my best friend tells me he is about to get in a car, I can believe he is safe, but I can't. Awful.
I’d get a sticker for my back windshield that announces my deafness / Hearing impairment just like the “baby on board” stickers as an extra precaution.

We’re scared everyday for our deaf brother driving because of these kind of stories... in the driver’s side window of his car it says “DEAF DRIVER”.
The last time he was pulled over, it was a good thing that i was also in the passenger seat. My brother was trying to sign something and the officer thought that he was being aggressive that he reach for his gun, and if i was not there, we would have been dead that day.
This is murder.

This is disgusting that they should even have to do this, that we all must live in fear of cops and learn how not to offend them if we want to survive. In other countries they dont do this. I actually lived in North Carolina at the time of this shooting and worked in the state legislature where they proposed a bill that all deaf people would have decals on the backs of their cars but ultimately it was shot down because some lawmakers thought it would make the deaf people easy targets for theives and criminals
Fun fact: "Hearing Impaired" is a very offensive term... use "Hard of Hearing" instead.
"Impaired" just puts a label on the person saying they're less able than everyone else. I would know because I'm in Honors classes and the Honor Society for American Sign Language at my school and my mom is Hard of Hearing.

As a hard of hearing gentlemen myself, this hurts. I’ll need one of those cards when I start driving, I am verbal but also can do ASL. Be a good idea to have that card to let cops know if I ever was pulled over and I had no barriers and couldn’t hear at least they understand, “hey, he is deaf and needs a interpreter”.
