We have mandatory Health insurance for everybody. Even unemployed people are included. The government takes care of it in case you can't afford it. This all ensures we do not have gangs /that many criminals. So no need to use arms to rob banks a.s.o.

I live less than a mile away from our government building. I see politicians in public transportation, in restaurants, on the street. We had presidents that used their bike to go to work. As we are a semi-direct democracy (we vote 4 times a year - every three months - on the most important bills) and we have proportional representation (we elect parties and their ideas, not people) the politicians are not so important. Most of the people do only now some names and wouldn't even recognize them.

Yup. I grew up in a house with some serious hardware: Machine guns, hand grenades, pistols, normal submachine guns. But I also knew why they were there: Both my parents had been in the resistance during the nazi occupation and they did not want to be caught empty-handed again. We never worshipped that kit. Like the Swiss, we knew it was there. Period. Not for personal protection, though - we had two great danes. They were a hell of a lot more efficient than a pistol.
Most Americans cannot even accept that a gun is a weapon...they get offended when you say that. If they respected the fact that a gun is a WEAPON ! then we would be somewhat on the right track
cubix626 it is, the current ones are around sometimes too. The thing is, we donˋt have "a" president, the job is done by a council of 7 people and made up of people from different parties, from left to right on the political spectrum. But I guess explaining that would not make sense in such a piece.
@@thekatanaist The president here in Switzerland is one of 7 equals in the federal council. They all are the head of a specific department, much like a CEO who answers to the owners of the company. In this case, the owner is us - the people. In referendums the 7 members of the federal council have their vote like everyone else, but nothing more. Granted, they make the policies that the people then decide on, giving them a measure of power - but nothing like in the U.S.A. (where the power, as we've been learning lately, is also more spread out than I thought...) Um, back to the presidency. That's mainly an additional job that rotates yearly, every member of the council gets to be president if they manage to stay long enough. Every 4 years all members need to be re-elected, which is mostly a formality. But if an individual councilor screwed up in their 4 years, they may well be replaced. The important part is that the president represents Switzerland as a whole, not their own agenda. There is always a bit of wiggle room there, but not very much as far as I know. So, Trump has happened here too a couple of years ago. The differences were that ours was highly educated and actually knew his stuff and that his views, which were more on the extreme right, were watered down significantly by the rest of the council. Then he got thrown out after his first 4 years. The big political scandal was that parts of his party broke off to form a new, more moderate splinter which still exists today - 12 years later. And nobody talks about that anymore because there is no need. :-)
Actually, he said "we do not are American." I'm assuming it's because they do not use the auxiliary verb "do" in French or German (or any language besides English and the Celtic languages, at that). As a result, Swiss children learning English have to be taught to insert "do" and "don't" before verbs, but perhaps this kid is a beginner and does not know the exceptions with do/don't.

The well-regulated militia came from the state providing their own military. At the time the federal government did not have their own military. The seating of the first Congress on 4 March 1789, legislation to create a military defense force stagnated as they focused on other concerns relevant to setting up the new government. President George Washington went to Congress to remind them of their duty to establish a military twice during this time. Finally, on the last day of the session, 29 September 1789, Congress created the War Department, historic forerunner of the Department of Defense. The War Department handled naval affairs until Congress created the Navy Department in 1798. So the Constitution was ratified June 21, 1788. Aside the fact that Switzerland has a far better social welfare system to protect and help the weak, disabled and poor as well as no history involving slavery which lead to great inequality and injustice, the intention of owning guns was always completly different in these two countries. In America guns were historically always used to protect YOURSELF against criminals, natives, wild animals etc. So everyone has the mindset that anyone around is a potential threat. In Switzerland we own historically guns to protect OURSELVES against foreign powers. One aspect also is the fact that Willy nilly Switzerland has and is confronting many of the mistakes of our past. Child labour, separation of children from "problematic parents" and so on. As said previously the problem in the US is education. Gun=freedom. In all other countries gun means violence. You have to start somewhere to change this culture and in the US you are nowhere near this.
No, freedom = freedom. People = violence. Your statement is ridiculous as it is stupid. Violence is created by people, not inanimate objects. By your logic, booze and vehicles should be titled "violent" as they kill still more people in the US than firearms. The difference being is you are far more likely to favor either and don't want to see either removed. Comparing the US to Switzerland is like comparing Japan to the UK aka totally different nations, culture, geopolitics, etc..... Try again Andre.
In my country guns dont mean violance only in stupid peoples brains. you have mental health problem if you fear guns. Anyone fearing inanimate object is considered insane.
I was born and grew up for a good chunk of my life in Switzerland, in other words I remember enough of how things were. Also I did and still do visit the country. Now I live in US and can say on the topic of guns how different views are. As a child growing up in Switzerland we were taught rules are there for a reason. Guns yes are dangerous but they are also for protection. Yes it's also for fun in certain games but like the former president said, it's about respect. Swiss acknowledge the potential harm that can be caused with this object and respect that. In contrast I find in the US I'm not quite sure if there is one way people are taught to view guns. Is it odd for me to say that I feel generally okay in Switzerland despite seeing the police or guards with their guns than in the US seeing the security where I feel slightly on edge/nervous at times. Maybe it has to do with the fact in Switzerland I see the gun but the guards are aware but relaxed (such as arms crossed but observant) vs in states where their hands are on the gun itself. There's a lot to be worked on with gun control. For some it has to be the acknowledgment that there is a problem. The next step doesn't have to be major but small changes are still a step. A country can't have the extremes of no law or too many laws as both would be either really dangerous or extreme resisting. I don't see guns being banned for the general public nor would I find it fair, after all if one wants a gun to be able to protect the, selves or for recreational use then they should be allowed. I do however belive if someone wants something that can cause harm they should be rules/laws and education on it. I could go on and have a long conversation on this but I'll cut it here as one thought leads to another.
You can see that there is mainly 1 type of gun, the stgw90/ sg550 (standard riffle of the swiss army), behind every of these is a 19week basic army training, where you learn to handle a gun properly. Every swiss man has to serve in the army, they knwo how to handle a gun safely.
Only in Switzerland you can see 13 year old kids with a fully automatic Assault Rifle on bicycles on their way to the shooting stand. Swiss-Greetings.. smile..
As an Italian, as a European, what puzzles me is how videos like this directed to an American audience always speak of things that are so normal for us, as if they were rocket science. “Here it is illegal to have your guns loaded when not in use” isn’t that just common sense
Well mass shootings dont happen from someone having gun loaded on accident and accidently shooting 50 people. Sure it prevents accidentants but thats not what America has problem with. America has problem with gun suicides and gang violence. Neither would be prevented by having gun unloaded. Also Swiss are not alowed to conceal carry but at same time they can drink while handling firearms so I would not look for common sense in switzerland. As we are a semi-direct democracy (we vote 4 times a year - every three months - on the most important bills) and we have proportional representation (we elect parties and their ideas, not people) the politicians are not so important. cubix626 it is, the current ones are around sometimes too.
(where the power, as we've been learning lately, is also more spread out than I thought...)
Um, back to the presidency.
"That's your problem", that really was funny

All this because Switzerland has sensible gun laws. And they can take their service rifles home.
But there are much more things to consider, not only gun laws. Education level in Switzerland is far higher than in the USA, where people in the bible belt teach bronze age superstition in school. Further, people in Switzerland are on average far wealthier than in the USA. All this combined leads to a society where people discuss openly different political issues, rather peacefully, I might say...

one simple comparsion: A school friend has married an US citizen. They have 3 daughters, lived in the US for some years. Finally they came to switzerland. Why?
Their daughters were in the same school for 2 years. In those 2 years they had 3 school-shooting drills and one false school schooting alert. Imagine your three daughters in that school, and a possible school-shooting distress call arrives. A whole army of first-responders in front of the school, SWAT teams cleaning the are, evacuation.
