As always an excellent video on maratha history, but it's my humble request to you to please in this version of panipat series do include the comeback battles of marathas after panipat war namely the reconquest of Delhi from rohilla pathans and the invasion of rohillkhand by mahadji shinde to regain lost respect after panipat war

Marathas were brave and all mighty In India at that time but they couldn't take on so many enemies with little strength and low support by own hindu brothers.
Btw excellent production historiography 👏 Waiting for Maratha ressurection.

Yup waiting for Mahadji Shinde and his armies to sweep across North India. He broke the tomb of the traitor Najib-ud-Daulah for what happened at Panipat(Mahadji was in the battle of Panipat too!). The crack troops under De Boigne were some of the best India had seen. Although there were several other European trained regiments the Scindhias had. Even the Holkars and Bhonsles had excellent modernized regiments.

    Excellent work as usual.....
No matter what , our Marathas faced the Afghans and the treacherous Najib single handed...And created unforgotten History...
Sorry to say, the sacrifices of Marathas are overlooked and deliberately not included or taught in schools...

Thats very true. The way history is taught most students know about the Maratha defeat at Panipat but are not aware that the Marathas had conquered vast swathes of land right upto Attock. Or that there was a Maratha kingdom even in Thanjavur.

There were hardly any pawns in the North who remained loyal to the Marathas. It's a tragedy that even the Naga Sadhus(they had defeated Afghans at Gokul previously) betrayed their own people. The Naga Sadhus had basically become mercenaries at this point. This sction was loyal to the court of Awadh. And fought bravely in the past particularly Anupgir Gosai(I read about him in Jadunath sarkars book on nagas). However in the later years Naga Sadhus would support marathas and fight against them as well. The Battle of Merta is an example where both sides(rajput and maratha) fielded these fierce warriors.

Brilliant narrative of those dreadful events as always.. I sincerely feel the Marathas in general, by nature had been a little too aggressive which won them a lot of wars in their last 10 yrs before Panipat.
However, they severely lacked the mean, shrude political sight, understanding of local northern politics and seemed to have gone too deep while defending against Rohillas and Afghans..
If you think of it in Shivaji Maharaj or Bajirao's line of strategic warfare, i feel Dattaji should have been told to completely fall back and save all his and army's strength since there wasn't much point in defending Delhi since they too had aligned with Najib and Afghans..All those agreements with Mughals were not much respected by their side anyway so we also had to act accordingly.
This entire horrific episode could have been avoided and this hell of a general(janmacha shipai as Ranoji Shinde used to fondly call him) along his junior leaders could have proved decisive in the actual war with Abdali later..
Maratha knowledge about the terrain, weather, strategic friends, supply chain management was not as strong as they had been in Deccan..
The Peshwa, all 3 of them, seemed to have an over ambitious belief that they can overrun the Afghan/Rohila war machine fairly easily.. multiple plans including had war continued much longer than previously thought, which indeed happened eventually, had not been prepared properly.. i know it's always easy to talk in a hind sight but these mistakes cost Marathas in the most tragic manner when you lose all major generation of diplomats, warriors in one go..:-((
Sometimes even relatively smaller events can later prove to be mistakes of lifetime.. salute to all those who led their life..

They engaged in battle with the Afghans too! Continuous rebellion took place since 1758 where they ousted their Afgan governor. See the battles of Gurjanwala and Sialkot in 1761. The sikhs also retook Lahore later. And faced of the Afghans at Sialkot in 1763. If you look at Sikh history post the era of Banda Bahadur you will see that Afghans were the only people they fough. Later on they fought the British too.

Not sure about the others but Ala Singh actively served and helped the pathans, in return for which he was duly rewarded by Abdali and thus able to found the kingdom of Patiala, the current maharaja of which is Capt Amarinder Singh (ex Chief Minister of panjab).

    • @jitub77
      @jitub77 2 роки тому +3

Also, the marathas and sikhs did fight together against the pathans, for a couple of years prior to the battle of Panipat. Not sure if or why they did not fight at the battle of panipat. However the resulting power vaccum in North western India after the maratha defeat and the heavy losses suffered by the pathans paved the way for the sikhs to rise and form their own kingdoms, the pinnacle of which was probably under maharaja ranjit singh.
